Rocha, Renato Oliveira. January 2015 (has links)
Abstract: This Master's thesis aims to analyze the relationship of the novel City of God (1997) with the reality it represents, to grasp how it gives a construction of the representation of reality, especially with respect to violence, through the narrative. The novel by Paulo Lins, one of the most important in Brazilian prose of the late twentieth century, can be taken as a fictional aspect that ushers realism in contemporary narrative. City of God brings out the Brazilian reality combining techniques of anthropological story in a fast pace, which deals with the development of drug trafficking and criminality in public housing that gives the book its title, signing the realistic contract with the reader. To give a formal treatment to the violent scenes, Paulo Lins makes use of poetry, beginning with the title-poem of Paul Leminski that the author uses in the opening of the book, providing a literary depiction of violence, however brutal it may be. This formal mediation that the writer uses to shape the depicted object provides a reading of the excluded Brazil and its realization in the novel, we can say, it appears as a separate chapter in the Brazilian literature and studies that would arise about the relationship between literature and poverty in Brazil. The insistence on violent scenes gives unity to the narrative, causes an effect of reality and leads the reader to think comprehensively in its significance, boosting the representation of violence as a constituent element of Brazilian society. Questioning the very notion of representation, what is sought is to discuss the novel in light of a diachronic perspective that considers how the realism - thought in the wake of proposing Tânia Pellegrini, such as posture and method - takes place in the novel in issue, distinguishing it - or not - than we might think as a realistic trend in Brazilian literature / Mestre

His poetry is part of his most studied, so this research we chose to analyze two works in prose: Maria Dagmar (novel, 1924) and Candunga: cenas da migração nordestina na zona bragantina (novel, 1954). With theoretical foundation based on the works of Mikhail Bakhtin and his Circle, we examined the corpus in order to characterize this literature, the social values it conveys, the style, the discursive project of the author and architectural composition of the works. The research that now presents itself, emerged from some images, attributed by critics to the writer Bruno de Menezes, as the writer of the marginalized, the voice that comes out of the drums (Benedito Nunes), the operator of the verse (José Arthur Bogéa), the soul of the people (Abguar Bastos), the heart of the suburb, the yard and the town (Dalcídio Jurandir), the bohemian poet of Belém (Ramayana Chevalier), the proletarian poet/poet of simple people (Santana Marques), the voice of our people (Machado Coelho), Voodoo Priest of the poetry of the earth (Puget Gentil), authentic interpreter of people of color (Pedro Tupinambá), etc. All these names can be found sparsely in the magazine Asas da Palavra (1996), and in the essays in the book Bruno de Menezes ou a sutileza da transição (1994). As a result of the analysis, in Maria Dagmar, confirmed some of the epithets attributed by critics and present dialogical relations with other texts, one set by the author Bruno de Menezes, the novel as A Ruiva, the Fialho d'Almeida. In Candunga, we realize that the main concern of the work is between culture and identity, especially the Amazonian Caboclo and the Northeast, speaking in customs, tradition confirming in this way the image assigned to the author-creator as ―the voice of our people‖, ―disseminator of culture‖, and ―writer of... Its basis are two feminine magazines, Correio das Modas (1839- 1840) and Novo Correio de Modas (1852-1854), edited by Eduardo and Henrique Laemmert. We reconstituted the conditions of existence of these two journals, placing them within Laemmerts' publishing action, taking into consideration their production and circulation networks, and evaluating how they were related to other publications of that time. We analyzed sections dedicated to fictional prose, in which the intention of guiding the readers' behavior was proved especially evident, and where we observed the values they helped to spread. We identified the narratives these magazines disseminated, presented their origin, distinguished the national narratives from the foreign ones, and compared the translations to the original texts, highlighting changes, cuts, and additions. At last, we observed on these two journals a dialogue between foreign literature and national literature due to sharing a common theme in narratives, which were centered on moral issues / Mestrado / Historia e Historiografia Literaria / Mestra em Teoria e História Literária
