Broad Bandwidth, All-fiber, Thulium-doped Photonic Crystal Fiber Amplifier for Potential Use in Scaling Ultrashort Pulse Peak Powers

Fiber based ultrashort pulse laser sources are desirable for many applications; however generating high peak powers in fiber lasers is primarily limited by the onset of nonlinear effects such as self-phase modulation, stimulated Raman scattering, and self-focusing. Increasing the fiber core diameter mitigates the onset of these nonlinear effects, but also allows unwanted higher-order transverse spatial modes to propagate. Both large core diameters and single-mode propagation can be simultaneously attained using photonic crystal fibers. Thulium-doped fiber lasers are attractive for high peak power ultrashort pulse systems. They offer a broad gain bandwidth, capable of amplifying sub-100 femtosecond pulses. The longer center wavelength at 2 ?m theoretically enables higher peak powers relative to 1 [micro]m systems since nonlinear effects inversely scale with wavelength. Also, the 2 [micro]m emission is desirable to support applications reaching further into the mid-IR. This work evaluates the performance of a novel all-fiber pump combiner that incorporates a thulium-doped photonic crystal fiber. This fully integrated amplifier is characterized and possesses a large gain bandwidth, essentially single-mode propagation, and high degree of polarization. This innovative all-fiber, thulium-doped photonic crystal fiber amplifier has great potential for enabling high peak powers in 2 [micro]m fiber systems; however the current optical-to-optical efficiency is low relative to similar free-space amplifiers. Further development and device optimization will lead to higher efficiencies and improved performance.

The newly elected government in South Africa had to deal with the injustices of the past under the apartheid government and had to introduce programmes to help the Historically Disadvantaged South Africans and building the economy. For many years, the mining sector contributed to the South African economy; however, mining operations in South Africa have not given the Historically Disadvantaged South Africans opportunities to participate in the mining industries or partake in the mining sector. The introduction of the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment in South Africa aims to promote and provide better opportunities to the previously disadvantaged communities in South Africa. However, it has been reflected that there is a slow transformation in the mining industry and economic participation of the Historically Disadvantaged South Africans in South Africa. The study finds that broad-based black economic empowerment (B-BBEE) policies have had little developmental impact and were not properly implemented in the mining sector. Analysis of South African pension fund conversions: 1980-2006; developing a model for dealing with environmental change

Between 1980-2006, thousands of South African pension funds converted members from defined benefit to defined contribution structures. This research set out to answer the questions of why this phenomenon occurred and whether peculiar environmental circumstances influenced the outcome. The research framework identified various stakeholders in the retirement fund industry - government; regulator; pension fund adjudicator; ombudsman for long term insurance; trade unions; members; trustees; business; employers and service providers - and isolated the elements to be considered in the research. Industry experts were interviewed to obtain a macro view of the phenomenon and specific manifestations of the phenomenon were also considered in case studies. The purpose of the research was to develop a model for managers to assist them in dealing with environmental change. Qualitative research methodology was utilised and feedback from semi-structured interviews was categorised into several emergent themes. Within-case and cross-case analyses were conducted. Research results indicate that the conversion phenomenon occurred in two waves - one initiated in the 1980s and driven by the trade unions and a second in the 1990s, driven by employers, often at the advice of their consultants. Evidence of the start of a third wave also emerged. Results indicate that an environmental shock exerted a substantial influence on the course of events. Under these:  Various factors combined to drive organisational evolution (i.e. adaptation to the environment).  Adaptation speed was inappropriate and exceeded that which was required for sufficient thought.  Uncertainty and vacuum circumstances arose leading to consequences that require redress.  The power of the relative stakeholders changed and influenced the strategic outcome.  An imbalance in stakeholder interests arose and ethical factors became consequential.  Business acted to restore certainty for itself. Existing literature explained organisational behaviour in environments of competitive shock and high turbulence, but not in circumstances of environmental shock. A model emerged to assist managers to deal with environmental change, which was applied to an analysis of pension fund reform. It was also applied to the pension fund perspective on Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment. EFFECT OF PHOTOPERIOD ON THE ADAPTATION OF CHICKPEA (CICER ARIETINUM L.) TO THE CANADIAN PRAIRIES

Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) was recently introduced to the Canadian prairies, a region which has a short growing season in which crop maturation often occurs under cool and wet conditions. To improve the yield of chickpea, crop duration must closely match the available growing season. The objectives of this study were to: i) examine the days to flowering of diverse chickpea accessions grown in either long or short-days; ii) examine the days to flowering of selected chickpea accessions grown in a range of thermal regimes combined with either long or short days and to examine the interaction between photoperiod and day and night temperatures on crop duration; iii) determine the timing and duration of the photoperiod-sensitive phase in selected chickpea accessions, and vi) determine the genetic basis of the association between flowering time and reaction to ascochyta blight in chickpea. A wide variation was observed in chickpea accessions for their response to flowering under long (16/8 hours day /night) and short days (10/14 hours day/night). Earlier flowering was observed under long photoperiod regimes compared with the short photoperiod regimes. Variability was detected among chickpea accessions for their flowering responses when different temperatures were combined with different photoperiods. Earlier flowering was observed under long days (16/8 hours day/night) coupled with high to moderate temperature regimes (24/16 ºC and 20/12 ºC, day and night respectively) compared to short-days (10/14 hours day and night) and moderate to low temperature regimes (20/12 ºC and 16/8 ºC day and night, respectively). Those chickpea accessions such as ICC 6821 and ICCV 96029 which originated from the lower latitudes of Ethiopia and India, respectively, flowered earlier compared to accessions such as CDC Corinne and CDC Frontier which originated from the higher latitudes and cooler temperate environments of western Canada. Photoperiod sensitivity phases were detected in chickpea accessions adapted to the cold environments of western Canada, whereas no photoperiod sensitivity phase was identified in the extra-early flowering cultivar ICCV 96029. The duration of the photoperiod sensitive phase in the chickpea accessions was longer under short days compared to long days. Field and growth chamber evaluation of a chickpea RIL population (CP-RIL-1) revealed the presence of variability among the lines and the two parents for their days to flowering and level of resistance to ascochyta blight. Broad sense heritability across different site-years for days to flower 0.45 to 0.78, plant height 0.48 to 0.78, ascochyta blight resistance 0.14 to 0.68, days to maturity 0.26, photoperiod sensitivity 0.83 and nodes number of first flowering 0.37 to 0.75 were estimated. Days to flower and photoperiod sensitivity were significantly r = -0.21 to -0.58 (P ≤ 0.05 to 0.001) and -0.28 to -0.41 (P ≤ 0.01 to 0.001), respectively and negatively correlated with ascochyta blight resistance in the CP-RIL-1 population. A genetic linkage map consisting of eight linkage groups was developed using 349 SNP markers. Seven QTLs were identified for days to flowering under growth chamber and field conditions on chromosomes 3, 5, 6 and 8 each and 3 QTLs on chromosome 4. The total phenotypic variation explained by QTLs for days to flowering ranged from 7 to 44%. Two QTLs for days to maturity were identified on chromosomes 3 and 8. Three QTLs, one each on chromosomes 3, 4 and 5 were identified for photoperiod sensitivity. The total phenotypic variation explained by each QTL for photoperiod sensitivity ranged from 7 to 41%. A total of three QTL for node of first flowering, one on chromosomes 3 and 8 each, and two on chromosome 4 were identified. The two QTL on chromosome 4 explained total phenotypic variations of 11 and 32%, respectively. Ten QTLs distributed across all chromosomes, except chromosomes 2 and 5, were identified for ascochyta blight resistance. The phenotypic variability explained by each QTL for ascochyta blight resistance ranged from 7 to 17%. The molecular markers associated with these QTLs have potential for use in chickpea breeding.

"Summary: The larvae of predatory hoverfly Episyrphus balteatus DeGeer (Diptera: Syrphidae), have limited dispersal ability to forage. The selection of the oviposition site by gravid females is crucial for the survival larvae. Therefore hoverfly females should optimise their foraging behaviour by choosing suitable oviposition sites. The aim of this PhD thesis was to understand how hoverfly females assess aphid patch quality during their egg-laying behaviour. The impact of several factors on the oviposition response of E. balteatus females including host plant, aphid species, aphid colony size, semiochemicals emitted from aphids or their association with host plants, presence of intra- or interspecific competitors and females age, was clearly demonstrated during this research. In the first part, we have shown that E. balteatus females select their oviposition site according to aphid-host plant and aphid species, which is also shown to be related to offspring performance (fitness). Aphid species Myzus persicae (Sulzer) infested-Solanum tuberosum L. was the most preferred aphid-plant combination as an oviposition site by syrphid females. The E. balteatus survival was enhanced in this system and females laid numerous eggs when larvae were reared with M. persicae as prey, especially when the host plant was potato. Broad bean plants Vicia faba infested with Megoura viciae (Buckton) or Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) were equally attractive for E. balteatus females. Aphis fabae (Scopoli) was the least preferred aphid. Higher hoverfly fitness was also observed when larvae were reared on M. viciae or A. pisum compared to those reared on A. fabae. Moreover, it was also demonstrated that foraging hoverfly females is guided by different infochemical cues emitted by aphid host plant, such as (E)-β-farnesene, enabling them to locate aphid infested plant and to select an adequate oviposition site. In the second part, the leaf disc system was found to be a practical and efficient method to assess the hoverfly reproductive behaviour under different laboratory conditions. Results also showed that there was a significant quadratic relationship between the released (E)-β-farnesene amounts and aphid colony size, which means that this molecule play important role in oviposition decision made by hoverfly females in response to aphid colony size. In the third part, we have highlighted that the E. balteatus females avoid aphid colonies in which conspecific larvae or their tracks were already present. Similar response was also shown by females to the presence of Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) larval tracks. This oviposition deterring stimulus was also shown to be mediated by odourant cues emitted from larval tracks extracts. It was also demonstrated that the foraging behaviour of hoverfly females was modified by the presence of parasitoids Aphidius ervi (Haliday) in aphid colonies. Females did not exhibit any preference for plants infested with unparasitised or parasitised aphids for 7 days, but they are reluctant to lay eggs in response to the presence of mummies or their exuvia on broad bean plants. Oviposition preference of predatory hoverfly females according to the developmental state of the parasitoid larvae in aphid prey was also found to be related with larval performance. Finally, the age of hoverfly females was found to be an important factor affecting their reproduction ability, suggesting that younger E. balteatus females (2 to 5 weeks old) could be have potential to play a role in biological control of aphids because of their higher reproductive efficiency. All experiments were performed in a laboratory environment and most results obtained are discussed in relation to the context of biological control efforts/Résumé : Les larves du syrphe aphidiphage Episyrphus balteatus (Diptère, Syrphidae) ont une capacité de déplacement limitée. Le choix du site doviposition des femelles est donc crucial pour la survie larvaire. Pour cela, les femelles de ce diptère devraient optimiser leurs choix de sites doviposition pour maximiser les chances de survie de leurs progénitures. Le but de cette thèse de doctorat était de comprendre comment les femelles dE. balteatus évaluent la qualité de patches de pucerons au cours de leur comportement de ponte. La réponse de ponte des femelles dE. balteatus observées à travers plusieurs facteurs a été réalisée, parmi lesquels: la plante hôte, lespèce de pucerons, la taille de la colonie de pucerons, les substances sémiochimiques émises par les pucerons et leurs associations avec leurs plantes hôtes, la présence de compétiteurs intra- ou interspécifiques et l'âge de la femelle. Dans la première partie de ce travail, les résultats obtenus ont permis de mettre en évidence que les femelles dE. balteatus sélectionnent le site de ponte en fonction de la plante hôte et lespèce de puceron, et ce comportement a été aussi montré comme étant lié avec la performance du prédateur (fitness). La combinaison puceron/plante M. persicae/Solanum tuberosum a été la plus préférée par les femelles dE. balteatus, et le fitness de ce prédateur était plus élevé en particulier lorsque les larves sont nourries avec M. persicae élevées sur une plante de pomme de terre. De même, les femelles dE. balteatus ont montré une même préférence pour les deux combinaisons M. viciae/V. faba et A. pisum /V. faba, et un fitness supérieur du prédateur adulte a été aussi observé lorsque les larves sont nourries avec les deux espèces de pucerons. De plus, nous avons aussi montré que les femelles dE. balteatus en recherche de site de ponte sont guidées par des substances volatiles, en particulier le E-(β)-farnésène, émises par les pucerons infestant leur plante hôte. Dans la deuxième partie, le système feuille-disque est démontré comme étant une méthode pratique et efficace pour évaluer le comportement de ponte dE. balteatus au laboratoire sous différentes conditions. Les résultats ont aussi démontré quil y a une relation quadratique entre lémission du E-(β)-farnésène et la taille de colonie de pucerons, ce qui permet de seffectuer que cette molécule a un rôle important dans le comportement de ponte des femelles dE. balteatus en réponse à la taille de la colonie de pucerons. Les résultats obtenus dans la troisième partie, nous ont permis de montrer que les femelles dE. balteatus réduisent leurs pontes dans une colonie de pucerons contenant préalablement des larves de leur propre espèce ou leurs traces. Une réponse similaire a été aussi montrée en présence des substrats préalablement visitées par les larves de coccinelle Harmonia axyridis. Ainsi, la réduction de la ponte des femelles dE. balteatus est provoquée par des substances volatiles émises par les substrats des larves de syrphe. Nous avons aussi démontré que la présence du parasitoïde Aphidius ervi dans une colonie de pucerons a un effet significatif sur le comportement de ponte des femelles dE. balteatus. Les femelles dE. balteatus ne distinguent pas les plants infestées par les pucerons parasités ou non parasités, cependant les femelles réduisent leur pontes en réponse à la présence des pucerons momifiés ou des exuvies de momies. De plus, un fitness supérieur du prédateur a été aussi observé lorsque les larves sont nourries avec lespèce de pucerons A. pisum parasités ou non parasités. Enfin dans la dernière partie, lâge de la femelle dE. balteatus influence significativement leur reproduction, ce qui permet de proposer que les jeunes femelles (2 à 5 semaines) peuvent être plus efficaces dans la lutte biologique contre les pucerons car elles ont une grande efficacité de reproduction. Toutes les expériences ont été effectuées au laboratoire et la plupart des résultats obtenus sont discutés en relation avec le contexte de la lutte biologique".

Banking sector, stock market development and economic growth in Zimbabwe : a multivariate causality framework

The thesis examined the comprehensive causal relationship between the banking sector, stock market development and economic growth in a multi-variate framework using Zimbabwean time series data from 1988 to 2015. Three banking sector development proxies (total financial sector credit, banking credit to private sector and broad money M3) and three stock market development proxies (stock market capitalization, value traded and turnover ratio) were employed to estimate both long and short run relationships between banking sector, stock market and economic growth in Zimbabwe. The study employs the vector error correction model (VECM) as the main estimation technique and the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach as a robustness testing technique. Results showed that in Zimbabwe a significant causal relationship from banking sector and stock market development to economic growth exists in the long run without any feedback effects. In the short run, however, a negative yet statistically significant causal relationship runs from economic growth to banking sector and stock market development in Zimbabwe. The study further concludes that there is a unidirectional causal relationship running from stock market development to banking sector development in Zimbabwe in both short and long run periods. Nonetheless this relationship between banking sector and stock markets has been found to be more significant in the short run than in the long run. The thesis adopts the complementary view and recommends for the spontaneity implementation of monetary policies as the economy grows. Monetary authorities should thus formulate policies to promote both banks and stock markets with corresponding growth in Zimbabwe’s economy. / Business Management / M. Com. (Business Management)

Relationship between Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) scores, revenue growth and profitability in JSE-listed companies

Government introduced the Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment Act, No. 53 of 2003 and the Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment Codes of Good Practice (‘the Codes’) in 2007 to address the economic inequalities in South Africa by incentivising companies to include black people in economic activities. These incentives relate to implementation of preferential procurement, which is meant to favour companies that are BEE-compliant. Based on the literature and government’s intention with BEE policies, an assumption developed that companies with greater BEE compliance, which is measured through a BEE scorecard as per the Codes, would perform better in terms of market share through their revenue and in terms of profits. The main objective of this study was to carry out an in-depth analysis of the relationship between BEE scores and revenue growth and profitability of JSE-listed companies. This was done to determine whether the efforts by government of incentivising companies to be more BEE compliant are effective. This study was conducted as a two-part model consisting of regression analysis and ttest to determine whether there is a relationship between BEE scores and revenue and profitability. The regression analysis focused on the top 100 most black-empowered companies. The t-test was a comparison of two data sets, which consisted of companies in the top 100 most black-empowered companies and those that do no fall among the top 100 most black-empowered companies. The results showed that, at the time of this research, there were no significant relationships between BEE scores and revenue and profitability. The analysis of the research findings collectively demonstrated that for both the tests (regression and ttest), the relationship between revenue and profitability could not be established. Hence, the results postulate that BEE compliance does not produce the desired results for the companies, which can be translated into better profitability and market share. / Financial Accounting / M. It is suitable to add practical illustrations of hydraulic tasks during teaching hydraulics and hydrology. These practical illustrations can be realized by mobile hydraulic circuit which is situated in the auditorium. This thesis is focused on constructional and project solution of the circuit which consists of a compensatory tank with sufficient capacity, pump aggregate and hydraulic measure flume. The construction of hydraulic flume must enable quick, simple and safety installation of a scaled down models of a hydro technical structures. The main requirements of a mobile teaching circuit are clearness of practical hydraulic illustrations, compact dimensions, comparatively low weight, mobility and simple control and manipulation. This diploma thesis also includes design of a scaled down models of a hydro technical structures, especially set of plate weirs, bed-crested weir, ogee-crested weir, culvert, Venturi flume, sluice and radial gate, pier and roughened bed. The hydraulic circuit drawing part also includes instrument carrier with level gauge. This diploma thesis includes theoretical text part, technical report of designed objects, hydraulic calculations and drawing part.
