Radiographie de l'interactivité radiophonique / Radiography of interactive radio

Schmidt, Blandine 15 July 2016 (has links)
The purpose of our doctoral thesis is to analyze radio’s roles in society, observing connections between radio stations and their audience within the context of phone-in programs which are omnipresent on air. Service broadcasts, meanwhile intending to offer help and advice in listener’s day-to-day problems, reveal new ways of using this media. Considering this, are radio stations passive or active devices? Is the audience used by these broadcasters or do they seize it autonomously? By studying the actual evolution of radio, throughout its new forms of technologies as in its most traditional uses, we seek to highlight the causual, comparison and concomitance links among broadcasts, as well as listerner’s reactions to it. In order to do that, our work has focused on Menie Grégoire’s broadcast on RTL from 1967 to 1981, on “Ça peut vous arriver” on RTL, and on “Lahaie, l’amour et vous” on RMC, still emitted nowadays.

Strömstedt, Anna-Karin, Petersson, Anton January 2022 (has links)
Background The commercial development of sport in recent decades have led to new opportunities in sport and media relations. This relation is divided into several interrelated components where a sport organization seek to attract sponsorship revenues, sponsors seek to increase brand exposure and the broadcaster generate revenue through advertising and new subscribers. This study includes parties from the Swedish Ski Federation, limited to cross-country skiing, their sponsors and Viaplay which have taken over the TV rights for the cross-country ski worldcup. Purpose The purpose of the thesis is to explore a new tripartite relationship and to analyze how the parties are affected by each other. Methodology A qualitative survey was conducted in which nine respondents were interviewed from organizations and companies within the tripartite relationship. Based on previous research and collected empirical data from semi-structured interviews, an analysis of the material has been made. Results The results show that the parties in the tripartite relationship influence each other to a great extent. Although commercial development brings new opportunities for several parties, not everyone agrees on its positive impact on sport. All parties in the tripartite relationship benefit from an increased interest in cross-country skiing, which they all can be involved in and influence. We have also identified an underlying conflict regarding viewers that creates a problem for both the Swedish Ski Federation and their sponsors. Conclusion The study's conclusion contributes to an increased understanding of how the tripartiterelationship is structured, how the parties affect each other and what can be done to strengthen the tripartite relationship. A theoretical and practical contribution based on the results can provide new knowledge and information to everyone in the tripartite relationship.

Multidiffusion et diffusion dans les systèmes OFDM sans fil / Multicast and Broadcast in wireless OFDM systems

Saavedra Navarrete, José Antonio 19 October 2012 (has links)
The OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) system uses multiple sub-carriers for data transmission. Compared to the single-carrier scheme, the OFDM technique allows optimal settings for high data rate transmission over a frequency selective channel (from the Shannon’s capacity point of view). We can, by this way, ensure reliable communication and efficient energy use. When we use OFDM, the sub-carriers use different channels with different attenuations as well. The equal power allocation on each sub-carrier does not ensure an optimal capacity in a peer to peer link. Dynamic power allocation (i.e., assign different amount of power to subcarriers according to the channel) gives better results, assuming that the channel state information is available at the transmitter. Nevertheless, the transmitter does not know the channels to all users when broadcast transmission are used, and the best strategy is to transmit with the same power on all subcarriers. This thesis aims to explore the intermediate situations, and propose appropriate power allocation tools. This intermediate situation is called "multicast": the transmitter, which knows the channel parameters, sends signals to a finite number of users, and it can adapt the transmission using this knowledge. It is an intermediate position between the "peer to peer" and the "broadcast. The goal of this work is to evaluate the gain brought by the knowledge of the channel state information in multicast situation beside the broadcast situation. Obviously, when the number of receivers is very large, the gain will not be appreciable because the signal found on its path a very large number of channels, and a uniform power allocation is near optimal. When the number of users is very low, we will be close to the peer to peer transmission and gains should be more appreciable. We propose some tools to quantify these improvements in the case where the systems have one antenna at the transmitter and the receiver, this case named SISO (Single Input Single Output). We also propose those tools on systems with multiple antennas, called MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output). The steps required to do this work are: 1) Assuming that the channel state information of the users are known at the base station, we implement tools, using information theory, to perform power allocation and evaluate the capacities of the systems under study. 2) For multi-user SISO-OFDM scheme, we propose a power allocation algorithm on each subcarrier on multicast situation. 3) For multi-user MIMO-OFDM, we propose an algorithm that exploits the characteristics of the "zero forcing" precoding. The objective is to share the available power among all subcarriers and all antennas. 4) Finally, in a last step we focus on an efficient design of the broadcast situation. We use tools from stochastic geometry to determine which area can be covered, with the aim that a percentage of users can receive a predetermined amount of information. This determines the coverage area without implementing long period simulations. The combination of these tools allows an effective choice between the situations that fall under the "broadcast", "multicast" and "peer to peer" transmissions.

SLA-Aware Adaptive Data Broadcasting in Wireless Environments

Popescu, Adrian Daniel 16 February 2010 (has links)
In mobile and wireless networks, data broadcasting for popular data items enables the efficient utilization of the limited wireless bandwidth. However, efficient data scheduling schemes are needed to fully exploit the benefits of data broadcasting. Towards this goal, several broadcast scheduling policies have been proposed. These existing schemes have mostly focused on either minimizing response time, or drop rate, when requests are associated with hard deadlines. The inherent inaccuracy of hard deadlines in a dynamic mobile environment motivated us to use Service Level Agreements (SLAs) where a user specifies the utility of data as a function of its arrival time. Moreover, SLAs provide the mobile user with an already familiar quality of service specification from wired environments. Hence, in this dissertation, we propose SAAB, an SLA-aware adaptive data broadcast scheduling policy for maximizing the system utility under SLA-based performance measures. To achieve this goal, SAAB considers both the characteristics of disseminated data objects as well as the SLAs associated with them. Additionally, SAAB automatically adjusts to the system workload conditions which enables it to constantly outperform existing broadcast scheduling policies.

Constellation Constrained Capacity For Two-User Broadcast Channels

Deshpande, Naveen 01 1900 (has links) (PDF)
A Broadcast Channel is a communication path between a single source and two or more receivers or users. The source intends to communicate independent information to the users. A particular case of interest is the Gaussian Broadcast Channel (GBC) where the noise at each user is additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). The capacity region of GBC is well known and the input to the channel is distributed as Gaussian. The capacity region of another special case of GBC namely Fading Broadcast Channel (FBC)was given in [Li and Goldsmith, 2001]and was shown that superposition of Gaussian codes is optimal for the FBC (treated as a vector degraded Broadcast Channel). The capacity region obtained when the input to the channel is distributed uniformly over a finite alphabet(Constellation)is termed as Constellation Constrained(CC) capacity region [Biglieri 2005]. In this thesis the CC capacity region for two-user GBC and the FBC are obtained. In case of GBC the idea of superposition coding with input from finite alphabet and CC capacity was explored in [Hupert and Bossert, 2007]but with some limitations. When the participating individual signal sets are nearly equal i.e., given total average power constraint P the rate reward α (also the power sharing parameter) is approximately equal to 0.5, we show via simulation that with rotation of one of the signal sets by an appropriate angle the CC capacity region is maximally enlarged. We analytically derive the expression for optimal angle of rotation. In case of FBC a heuristic power allocation procedure called finite-constellation power allocation procedure is provided through which it is shown (via simulation)that the ergodic CC capacity region thus obtained completely subsumes the ergodic CC capacity region obtained by allocating power using the procedure given in[Li and Goldsmith, 2001].It is shown through simulations that rotating one of the signal sets by an optimal angle (obtained by trial and error method)for a given α maximally enlarges the ergodic CC capacity region when finite-constellation power allocation is used. An expression for determining the optimal angle of rotation for the given fading state, is obtained. And the effect of rotation is maximum around the region corresponding to α =0.5. For both GBC and FBC superposition coding is done at the transmitter and successive decoding is carried out at the receivers.

Energy Efficient Scheme Using Handshaking For Broadcast In A Wireless Ad Hoc Network

Sathya Prakash, K R 05 1900 (has links) (PDF)
The applications of ad hoc wireless networks envisaged in this thesis are those related to issues of disaster management, rehabilitation, security and defense. The circumstances in such situations warrants the deployment of a quick ad hoc network that is simple and uses minimum resoures to get started. The communication within the network has to be reliable and it has to be simple so that it can be deployed in extremely compex topography and other climatic conditions. Since large batteries cannot be assumed to be at our disposal for the sake of communication at all the times, energy conservation by way of energy efficient schemes is a paramount issue. Ad hoc wireless networks are broadcast networks by nature. For all the communications, transmissions by the nodes are broadcast into the air. A networkwide broadcast is distinguished from this. When a node wants its data to reach all the other nodes in the network then it initiates a networkwide broadcast. There may be nodes in the network that are not directly reachable by the node that wants to do a networkwide broadcast. Networkwide broadcast is used by ad hoc wireless networks for routing protocols, updating of network status information, network organization and multicasting. Most importantly, the applications envisaged out of this thesis need all their data communication as networkwide broadcast alone. In an ad hoc wireless network, a networkwide broadcast is usually effected by the flooding mechanism, which is inherently inefficient, since all the nodes in the network have to transmit the same information. It is possible to exploit the topology of the network in such a way, that only a few of the nodes need to transmit the information to complete a networkwide broadcast. The thesis deals with a new scheme for a networkwide broadcast implemented in the media access control (MAC) layer of an ad hoc wireless network. The new scheme is developed by extending the concept of handshaking signals used in unicast, to the networkwide broadcast scenario. In the case of unicast, where there is an intended recipient, handshaking is done for reliability and happens through the RTS and CTS packets. This idea is extended to suit the networkwide broadcast scenario and the consequences are discussed in detail in the thesis. Intuitively, adding more packets for handshaking increases the number of bytes transmitted. But the results obtained are interesting, since the network transmits fewer bytes per networkwide broadcast, on an average, with the newly proposed scheme. A comparison is done with the implementation of simple flooding following the IEEE 802.11 standard. These results have been demonstrated by simulations. The average improvement is nearly 2.5 times reduction in the number of bytes transmitted per networkwide broadcast. The performance of a networkwide broadcast in an ad hoc wireless network is usually affected badly by losses due to transmssion error in the medium. In a medium with errors, persistence improves reliability. This reliability helps in bringing robustness. The advantage of the proposed scheme is that it uses the idea of persistence to ensure the networkwide broadcast reachabilityto be almost independent of transmission error rate. The MAC layer ensures that the broadcast packet reaches each and every node that is connected to the node that initiates the etworkwide broadcast. The effects of collision are also overcome. Our simulations establish that the scheme works correctly, and gives good performance.

Mobile Satellite Broadcast and Multichannel Communications : analysis and design

Martin, Cristoff January 2005 (has links)
<p>In this thesis, analytical analysis and design techniques for wireless communications with diversity are studied. The impact of impairments such as correlated fading is analyzed using statistical models. Countermeasures designed to overcome, or even exploit, such effects are proposed and examined. In particular two applications are considered, satellite broadcast to vehicular terminals and communication using transmitters and receivers equipped with multiple antennas.</p><p>Mobile satellite broadcast systems offer the possibility of high data rate services with reliability and ubiquitous coverage. The design of system architectures providing such services requires complex trade-offs involving technical, economical, and regulatory aspects. A satisfactory availability can be ensured using space, terrestrial, and time diversity techniques. The amount of applied diversity affects the spectral efficiency and system performance. Also, dedicated satellite and terrestrial networks represent significant investments and regulatory limitations may further complicate system design.</p><p>The work presented in this thesis provides insights to the technical</p><p>aspects of the trade-offs above. This is done by deriving an efficient method for estimating what resources in terms of spectrum and delay are required for a broadcast service to reach a satisfactory number of end users using a well designed system. The results are based on statistical models of the mobile satellite channel for which efficient analytical design and error rate estimation methods are derived. We also provide insight to the achievable spectral efficiency using different transmitter and receiver configurations.</p><p>Multiple-element antenna communication is a promising technology for future high speed wireless infrastructures. By adding a spatial dimension, radio resources in terms of transmission power and spectrum can be used more efficiently. Much of the design and analysis work has focused on cases where the transmitter either has access to perfect channel state information or it is blind and the spatial channels are uncorrelated.</p><p>Herein, systems where the fading of the spatial channels is correlated and/or the transmitter has access to partial channel state information are considered. While maintaining perfect channel knowledge at the transmitter may prove difficult, updating parameters that change on a slower time scale could be realistic. Here we formulate analysis and design techniques based on statistical models of the multichannel propagation. Fundamental properties of the multi-element antenna channel and limitations given by information theory are investigated under an asymptotic assumption on the number of antennas on either side of the system. For example, limiting normal distributions are derived for the squared singular values of the channel matrix and the mutual information. We also propose and examine a practical scheme capable of exploiting partial channel state information.</p><p>In both applications outlined above, by using statistical models of the channel characteristics in the system design, performance can be improved. The main contribution of this thesis is the development of efficient techniques for estimating the system performance in different scenarios. Such techniques are vital to obtain insights to the impact of different impairments and how countermeasures against these should be designed.</p>
