Luca, Walter Alberto de 17 March 2011 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-08-03T12:31:21Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Walter Alberto de Luca Texto-PDF.pdf: 1294802 bytes, checksum: 4d5b2f03e1c9670ad7275ffd85b944f3 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-03-17 / This thesis reflects about the decline of the audience of the big broadcast television networks and how producers deal with this global trend. It brings an overview about the matter in the world and focuses particularly the case of Brazil, where the three main television channels have had historically some of the highest rates of audience compared to the major networks of other countries. After analyzing the fragmentation of televiewing audiences in the last two decades and the numbers that show the increasing dispersion of the public attention among the multiples choices of media available nowadays, the study discuss the strategies of programming and content construction based on writers and producers opinions and on the exam of important TV programs. The purpose is to expose the efforts required to attract, sustain and retain televiewers attention. These efforts start with audience measurements and researches about consumers attitudes and interests toward TV, which defines the agenda of themes and the techniques to write, direct and edit programs. The research discusses also how exposure of televiewers occurs in an environment where consumers have multiple choices of screens to choose television programs and other media activities. It considers that exposure is an essential condition to support the study of other approaches of the communication process, such as the influence of the media over culture and society. In a context where media occupies so much time of our personal life, the impact of the mass media might be proportionally direct to the number of people they reach, to the habits of consuming information and entertainment and to the time dedicated to accessing them.

Santana, Fabio Prado dos Santos 30 August 2014 (has links)
Sergipe is a rapidly developing state that is among the fastest growing in the Northeast region. Since 1971, when Sergipe TV network was founded, followed by Atalaia, Aperipê and Canção Nova, in that order, other three TV networks that are still operational to this day, the broadcast television very quickly became one of the most popular means of communication among the regions´s population, being seen by the great majority of the local citizens on a daily basis. The fore mentioned TV networks play an important role in a society formed by individuals whose main means of access to information is the television. These companies have developed, were consolidated in the local economy, bringing data from job positions offer, income increase, business opportunities, professional qualification, technology improvement, among other things. Culture, knowledge and creativity are inherent ingredients of broadcast television, and so this segment, as well as the service sector in general, gained ascendancy in the second half of the last century, from new concepts that have emerged along with the knowledge society. But more than that, this market brings unique data that represents how well local TV networks are managed. As study object, this study sought to do an analysis on the management of public television companies located in Sergipe, through data obtained through interviews with professionals who work in these four firms, as well as former employees and knowledgeable and experts from local broadcast television market. Thus, it was possible to develop a representative picture of the companies belonging to this sector in Sergipe, made based on the confrontation between the variables studied in the research field as well as in reviewing materials. The research demonstrated a scenery of a fairly concentrated market, primarily with political and religious ramifications connected stations, still pointing average values of pay lower than the applied nationwide workforce, but with a high percentage of employed persons who have level training upper and expertise, among other elements investigated.

Think tanks and the construction of authority in the UK : Ideological representations of private sector knowledge producers in broadcast television news

Graham, Minenor-Matheson January 2020 (has links)
Private sector knowledge producers, more commonly known as think tanks or research institutes, are used as authoritative sources in Western media either as interview guests or their research quoted by journalists.  Most studies have focused on their ability to influence government policy, but very little has focused on their role in the public sphere, particularly their visibility in media.  This study will explore how often think representatives appear as authoritative sources or experts in broadcast media during the 2015, 2017 and 2019 UK General Elections.  This will be done through a quantitative content analysis and thematic analysis investigating whether such representatives are accorded preferential access and ascribed primary authority to define narratives.  Additionally, a theoretical model has been designed to detect whether a marketplace of ideas can be detected or whether television news is a site of Habermassian rational-critical public sphere.  Inspired by the work of Anstead and Chadwick, and taking this vital work further, this study investigates whether authority signalling, and primary definition is still a relevant theory by analysing broadcast news coverage across three general elections.

A General Framework for Interactive Television News

Sellers, Benjamin Bart 13 July 2012 (has links) (PDF)
We design a complete interactive television news system. We develop a news production system that allows for the creation of flexible, content-rich interactive news. This system embraces a general creation process to interactive news that is built on top of a newscast model that evolves from and conforms with the current production newscast model. It allows for content sharing and content reuse. We also create an interactive news viewing system that adapts well to a living room environment. It contains several interactive features designed to give the viewer control and allow them to watch the news when, where, and how they want to. We perform a formative evaluation through a user study and interviews. Our results show that the production system allows fast, quality construction of interactive news. Viewers enjoy the interactivity and control the viewing system provides, but more work needs to be done to improve ease of use. Our system increases extra content visibility and usage over previous studies through additional features, more content, and direct invites to viewers. We also produce and deliver the news over an entire two-week period to a large number of viewers, making it the largest study done according to our knowledge.

The first addresses the relationship between the mode of production and therefore of socialization of individuals in this moment of contemporary capitalism with the concepts of Ideology, Ideological State Apparatuses (IEA), and the impacts that cause in individuals and their relationships. The second part focuses on how the media (one of IEA), particularly the means of communication, affects the social reality and the interaction of these individuals with this social environment, specifically in what concern our representative democracy. Finally, the third stage, more empirical, will be studied the media reality of Brazil, the concentration of power that occurs in a means of social communication, broadcasting service, specifically the issue of broadcast TV concessions, and the way that gives the exploitation of this public good by oligopolies.

A Survey on Student Uses of and Attitudes Toward Broadcast Television News and "Tabloid" Television

McDonnell, Rafael C. (Rafael Charles) 08 1900 (has links)
A survey testing student uses of and attitudes towards traditional broadcast television news and eleven "tabloid" programs was conducted using 300 students enrolled at the University of North Texas. The 10:00 p.m. newscast was most watched by the students. The most watched weekly news magazine was "60 Minutes." The Oprah Winfrey Show" was the daily "tabloid" leader. "America's Most Wanted" led the weekly "tabloid" shows. Students perceived daily newscasts as important sources of information. "USA Today," the weekly news magazines "60 Minutes" and "20/20,1" and "America's Most Wanted" were also cited by students as being "important" information programming. However, the survey showed "tabloid television" was not a major source of informational programming for college students.

Televizní zpravodajství o koronavirové epidemii 2020 jako možný svět / Broadcast coverage of the coronavirus epidemic 2020 as a possible world

Bergerová, Michaela January 2021 (has links)
This diploma thesis explores the theory of possible worlds and its relation to broadcast during the coronavirus pandemic. It perceives news, especially broadcast, as a possible world. Using narrative analysis, this thesis describes the characteristics of two possible worlds that arose during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic on Czech Television and television Prima. The main goal of this research is to examine what kind of possible worlds have these two TV stations constructed in their main news programs and to point out how these two possible worlds differed. My diploma thesis should primarily contribute to a clear comparison of how the depiction of the coronavirus pandemic differed by individual television channels in the first half of 2020.

Digitalizace televizního vysílání ve Spojených státech / Digital television transition in the United states

Boch, Vítězslav January 2017 (has links)
This thesis describes digital television transition in the United States. Its goal is to introduce the way how digital television broadcasting in the United States was formed and analog broadcasting was switched off, and how these changes affected American television market and usage of broadcasting spectrum. In the first part I explain a context in which American television market has been formed and has developed until the beginning of 1990s, when the debate about digital television broadcasting commenced. Reason for a development of the new television norm was a desire to broadcast in high definition. Establishment of ATSC norm is explained in 4th chapter. Following chapter describes how digital television coverage grew and what the expenses were for viewers. The thesis then describes spectrum auctions and changes in the television market which digital television transition brought. When the transition ended need for a new debate about television emerged because current norm is becoming obsolete and did not allow broadcasting in ultra high definition. This lead to the development of ATSC 3.0 norm which allows broadcasting more programs in terrestrial television broadcasting and allows expanding terrestrial broadcasting to other mobile devices.
