The impacts on broiler performance and yield by removing antibiotic growth promoters and an evaluation of potential alternatives

Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the impacts of removing antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) on broiler performance and yield and to evaluate alternative products as potential replacements. In experiment one, approximately 552,000 broilers were reared in four solid-wall, tunnel ventilated houses that were divided into two paired-house facilities, each assigned one of two dietary treatments. The treated group received basal diets containing salinomycin (SAL), roxarsone (ROX) and AGP, while the control group received the same diets without ROX and AGP. Removal of ROX and AGP had no affect on average body weight and feed efficiency, while livability was significantly affected negatively by the removal of ROX and AGP. Tender, wing, drum and percentage of total white meat showed significant improvements in yield during the study, while all other parts were not affected by removal of ROX and AGP. In experiment two, an investigation was conducted to evaluate the effects on performance from feeding Bacillus subtilis spores (Gallipro®, Chr Hansen A/S, Denmark), as a direct-fed microbial additive, to commercial broiler chickens. Birds were divided among two paired-house facilities. The treatment group received basal diets supplemented with B. subtilis spores, while the control group was fed the same basal diets containing an AGP. Feed conversion ratio was significantly lower for the treatment group, while average body weight, coccidiosis lesion scores, and footpad scores were not affected by the treatments. In experiment three, 6,000 broiler chickens were equally divided among four treatment groups and reared to 49 d to determine the effectiveness mannan oligosaccharides (MOS, Bio-Mos®, Alltech, Nicholasville, Kentucky, USA) as an alternative for an AGP program and MOS plus Natustat™ (NAT, Alltech, Nicholasville, Kentucky, USA) as an alternative to an enteric health program (AGP+anticoccidial drug). Average body weight for the control (CON) and antibiotic (ANT) groups was significantly different from the MOS+NAT group, but not the MOS group. Carcass front half, carcass hind half, frame and skin yields were improved for all treatments when compared to the MOS+NAT group. Conversely, percent total white meat yield was improved with the inclusion of MOS when compared to the ANT group. The findings of this research suggest that the removal of AGP from the diets of commercial broiler chickens does not affect the performance and yield of the birds over a one year production period. Furthermore, B. subtilis spores and mannan oligosaccharides provide acceptable alternatives to an AGP program.

Over recent years in many countries the research on how to use various additives to foodstuff in feeds of birds has intensified (ferment preparations, organic acids, prebiotics), due to which biological value as well as birds’ productivity and immunity to a contraction of diseases would increase. The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of enzymes Rovabio™ Excel AP, organic acids Euro Guard SVB and prebiotics Agrimoss® on productivity and digestive processes of broiler chickens. To reach this, the dynamics of mass growth of chicken broilers, feed input, and birds’ preservation. The influence of preparations Rovabio™ Excel AP, Euro Guard SVB and Agrimoss® on biochemical and microbiological processes in the contents of separate intestinal segments of chicken broilers, as well as the influence of said preparations on blood parameters of broilers in blood serum was determined. The work was completed on April-September of 2006 in „AB Vilniaus paukštynas“, in the laboratory of birds’ feed and aviculture products at LVA (Lithuanian Veterinary Ascademy) and in the company „Adisseo“. The feeding trial was conducted on 800 Roos 308 broiler chickens allocated to four groups of 200 chickens each. Group I were control, groups II, III, IV were experimental. Labai svarbu ir savalaikiškai ištirti vartotojų poreikį broilerienai, aktualu nustatyti vartotojų požiūrį į Lietuvoje užauginamą produkciją bei importuotą. ir kokia yra priklausomybė vyrų bei moterų tarpe, ir nuo gaunamo atlyginimo. Vartotojų tyrimai rodo, kad auga paklausa lengvai virškinamiems, greitai paruošiamiems, aukštos maistinės kokybės gyvulininkystės produktams. Darbo tikslas - Išsiaiškinti broilerienos paklausą ir pasiūlą Lietuvoje, įvertinti broilerienos suvartojimo tendencijas, analizuoti broilerienos rinką, pagrindinius gamintojus. Įvertinti importą ir eksportą, taip pat sužinoti pagrindinius veiksnius, lemiančius broilerienos produktų pasirinkimo apsisprendimą Tyrimui atlikti buvo iškelti uždaviniai. Tyrimo uždaviniai: 1. Įvertinti broilerienos pasiūlą ir paklausą Lietuvoje; 2. Ištirti broilerienos pasirinkimą priklausomai nuo vartotojo atlyginimo; 3. [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The objectives of this work is the analysis of effect of probiotics Bactocell® and prebiotics Agrimos® on process digestive and on productivity of broiler chickens. 800 items of Cobb500 broiler chickens from 1 to 35 days of age were taken, for this research to be made. The birds were divided into 4 treatment groups. They were kept on deep litter, watered from stationary drinking - bowls. They were fed and allocated according to the recommendations of suppliers of broiler cross. Grown and slaughtered broilers were analyzed by evaluation of activity of fermentation, amount of dry substances, pH- level within the alimentary canal. Also, index of growth intensity, feed expenditures were registered. In addition, characteristics of meat of chicken legs and breast were examined on the background of sensual perception. After the research was undertaken, it was determined that after using probiotics Bactocell® and prebiotics Agrimos® the feed expenditure decreased by 1-2 %, whereas, the daily weight increased by 2 – 4 %. level. The influence on the pH- level within the alimentary canal wasn't significant; the level of ammonia and dry substances tended to decrease. Whereas, activity of fermentation was registered as increased. It was determined, the probiotics Bactocell® and prebiotics Agrimoss® treated seed meal hasn't any significant effect for the sensual perception of the meat.

Food choices for hungry broiler breeders : do they prefer quantitative or qualitative dietary restriction?

This programme of research uses choice test methodologies to quantify hungry broiler breeder chickens’ preferences for qualitative or quantitative dietary restriction. It begins with an outline of quantitative dietary restriction, its severity and welfare implications before discussing methods of qualitative feed restriction and the difficulties ascertaining whether it represents a welfare improvement. Chapter two reviews the factors affecting diet preferences and discusses implications for feed restricted broiler breeder diet preferences. Chapter three outlines the use of a closed economy T-maze task to quantity the diet preferences of feed restricted broiler breeders. It concludes that broiler breeders can learn a food versus no food task but find it very difficult to learn a task in which both of the options are rewarded with food and this impeded diet preference quantification. Chapter four demonstrates that severity of feed restriction underlies these difficulties in learning. In Chapter five, a conditioned place preference task to identify the effects of diets on affective state (hunger versus satiety) is reported. A method validation group demonstrated that broilers show a state dependent preference for an environment associated with ad libitum access to food. However, birds failed to show a preference between an environment associated with quantitative dietary restriction and one associated with qualitative dietary restriction. Chapter six applies state- dependent learning (SDL) to quantifying the satiating effects of quantitative and qualitative dietary restriction. However, a validation group suggested that SDL preferences were probably an artefact of the test rather than a genuine state-led preference. Finally, the overall conclusion that no evidence was found that broiler breeders want, or that their welfare is improved by, qualitative feed restriction was drawn. However, the conditions under which a preference was reliably observed and the presence of hunger – state dependent effects on learning and expression of learnt preferences complicates the interpretation of any findings. Recommendations for further research are highlighted.

The South African poultry industry is a large part of the agricultural industry and a very important contributor to the Agriculture’s Gross Domestic Product. Furthermore, this industry is expanding and very good growth is predicted for the next decade. This growth will take place in the formal as well as the informal segments of the industry. The informal segment holds a lot of potential for suppliers to supply in their growing needs. Due to the fact that broiler feed is seen as a large contributor to the total cost of broiler production, it is considered very important factor. If feed suppliers want to focus on the informal market, they need to understand the differences between commercial farmers and small–scale farmers and specifically the different needs of small–scale farmers. To develop a strategy to utilize the opportunities in the informal market, it is necessary to understand all the factors that influence the purchase behaviour of these farmers. A model of stimulus response is used to define the factors that may influence purchase behaviour. The factors that seemed important from the literature study are market and other stimuli. The market stimuli consist of product, price, promotion and place. The product aspect could further be divided into quality aspects, brand equity, and additional services that accompany the product. Other stimuli that could influence purchase behaviour are economic conditions, special event, climatic condition and the influence of culture. Data was collected by means of a questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and factor analysis were used on the data to determine which factors influence the small–scale farmers’ purchase behaviour. While the Kaiser Meyer Olkin measure, Bartlett’s test of shericity and Cronbach Apha were used to determine if the data is suitable to do a factor analysis on. Factor analysis was done to determine which factors are the most important. The seven significant factors that influence the purchase behaviour of small–scale farmers are: * Value for money and opportunity. * Perceived brand value. * Customer support and service. * Consensus on available quality. * Brand loyalty. * Feed price at the reseller. * Bag size. Tail-end dehulling of canola meal: chemical composition and nutritive value of dehulled meal for broiler chickens and weaned pigs

Experiments were conducted to determine the optimal conditions for tail-end dehulling of canola meal (CM) and the production of high-protein, high-energy and low-fiber CM. The use of sieves from 250-600µm resulted in the production of dehulled fractions 1 and 2 from three different types of CM. On average, and in comparison with their parent meals, the dehulled fractions 1 and 2 contained less dietary fiber (19.4 and 22.9 vs. 27.5%) and more protein (44.5 and 43.1 vs. 40.1%), respectively. Growth performance experiments were conducted with broiler chickens and weaned piglets fed diets containing dehulled CM fractions. In the broiler chicken trial, no significant differences for feed intake, BWG and feed efficiency were observed, indicating that CM and its low-fiber fractions could replace SBM in the broiler pre-starter diets at a lower cost. In the swine experiment, a beneficial effect of dehulling on final body weight and feed efficiency was observed.

Darbo uždaviniai: 1) ištirti lesalų papildytų nesmulkintais kvietrugiais įtaką viščiukų broilerių produktyvumui, lesalų sąnaudoms 1 kg priesvorio gauti ir išsaugojimui; 2) ištirti lesalų papildytų nesmulkintais kvietrugiais įtaką viščiukų broilerių virškinimo trakto išsivystymui; 3) ištirti lesalų papildytų nesmulkintais kvietrugiais įtaką viščiukų broilerių virškinimo procesams (žarnų turinio pH, SM, amoniakiniam azotui ir kt.). Tyrimu rezultatai ir išvados: Tiriamųjų grupių kombinuotasis lesalas 1–7 amžiaus dienomis buvo papildytas skirtingais nesmulkintų kvietrugių kiekiais: I-osios tiriamosios grupės lesaluose neskaldyti kvietrugiai sudarė 4 %, II-osios – 6 %. Nuo 8 iki 35 amžiaus dienos viščiukai broileriai buvo lesinami tarpiniu lesalu.
