Autotelic Architecture : A collection of architectural stories / Autotelisk Arkitektur : En samling arkitektoniska berättelser

Grundström, Oskar, Storesund, Theo January 2014 (has links)
• Autotelic Architecture is a collection of buildings with architectural stories. • The buildings included are described with black line drawings on white paper and a supplementary text. The drawings have been stripped down to only show walls, pillars, stairs, ramps and significant objects. Together the drawing and the text describes what story is told in the building through its architectural elements. • The reason to include a building in the collection is our recognition of a story within it. • All of the buildings in the collection have been built. • Each of the buildings in the collection hold a story thought of as relevant, communicated with spaces and objects. The relevance is based on an incomplete set of attributes, indicating a strong architectural story. • The buildings are categorized in different themes. For example, the theme of labyrinths describe buildings that are of a maze like nature, schizophrenic describe buildings with multiple logics and nothingness describe buildings appearing to be almost nothing. One building can be part of several themes, and the number of themes is not fixed. • The intention is to visualize the nature of the architectural story and to provide a conceptual inventory for further development of architectural stories. We believe that from telling stories with only the configuration of a buildings physical conditions there arises a direct intellectual stimulation which adds poetic depth to the building. • This book argues that the poetical aspects of architecture has a purpose in itself and should take precedence over the technical aspects. • This book is not a manual and can therefore not be seen as dogmatic or as a recipe for architecture. It is a body of strong architectural stories that deserve to be noted and shared. • This book does not take a stand against other forms of architecture, it simply proposes a language of designing that is both serious and happy, both literal and tentative, both enigmatic and real.

Kohlmeier, Markus 16 December 2020 (has links)
An introduction to the theoretical discussion about the impact of disorder on the urban social structure is followed by different multivariate regressions (N = 2003). The perception of different images of physical and social disorder is measured in terms of the sentimental value of disorder and the perceived frequency of disorder. An additive index using product terms of the sentimental value and the perceived frequency for each image is constructed. The results of the regressions indicate that social structure of urban neighborhoods, collective efficacy, and such predictors which aim at the significance of social proximity (victimization, housing situation, personal crime settings) for processes of cognitive dissonance coping explain when an actor defines a situation as not-secure and subsequently interprets disorder as a symbol of danger. Esser’s (1991) theory of frame-selection functions as the social mechanism of the explanans. The hypotheses are tested on survey data provided by the city of Leipzig (2011).:1 Einleitung 2 Theorie 2.1 Hunter (1978) 2.2 Wilson und Kelling (1982) 2.3 Exkurs 2.4 Lewis und Salem (1986) 2.5 Skogan (1990) 2.6 Das Konzept der collective efficacy 3 Hypothesen 3.1 Der Grundzusammenhang des theoretischen Modells 3.2 Die Brückenhypothesen des Modells 3.2.1 Direkte und indirekte Viktimisierung 3.2.2 Kriminalitätsfurcht 3.2.3 Medienrezeption 3.2.4 Kontrollvariablen 4 Daten, Operationalisierungen, Methoden 4.1 Daten 4.2 Operationalisierungen 4.2.1 Abhängige Variable(n) 4.2.2 Unabhängige Variablen 4.3 Methoden 5 Auswertung 5.1 Bivariate Ergebnisse 5.2 Multivariate Ergebnisse 6 Fazit und abschließende Bemerkungen 7 Anhang 8 Literaturverzeichnis

An Ocean Stereo Telemetry System Based on PC104 Industrial Control Computer and Iridium Communication

Jiehua, Liu, Dongkai, Yang, Qishan, Zhang 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2005 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-First Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 24-27, 2005 / Riviera Hotel & Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / To monitor ocean resources and environment, we develop an ocean stereo telemetry system built on a PC104 industrial control computer, which is carried by a buoy on the ocean. All monitoring instruments communicate with the computer by six serial ports in virtue of time division multiple access and are synchronized by GPS time to collect data. All monitoring data is archived and compressed in format of RINEX (Receiver Independent Exchange). The uploading data and downloading control command to and from monitoring center is transferred by Iridium communication in automatic retransmission request and broken-point continuing mechanism.

Electronic structure of open-shell transition metal complexes

Krämer, Tobias January 2011 (has links)
This thesis presents electronic structure calculations on problems related to the bonding in inorganic coordination compounds and clusters. A wide range of molecules with the ability to exist in different structural forms or electronic states has been selected and density functional theory is systematically applied in order to gain detailed insight into their characteristics and reactivity at the electronic level. First, we address the question of redox non-innocent behaviour of bipyridine in a series of 1st row transition metal complexes. Complexes of the type [M(2,2'-bipyridine)(mes)₂]0 (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni; mes = 2,4,6-Me₃C6H₂) and their one-electron reduced forms have been explored. The results clearly show that the anions are best described as complexes of the monoanionic bipyridine radical (Sbpy = 1/2), giving a rationale for the observed structural changes within the ligand. Likewise, we have identified dianionic bipyridine in both the complexes [Zn2(4,4'-bpy)(mes)₄]²− and [Fe(2,2'-bpy)₂]²−. In no case have we found evidence for significant metal-to-ligand backbonding. The subject of redox-noninnocence is further revisited in a comparative study of the two complexes [M(o-Clpap)₃] (M = Cr, Mo; o-Clpap = 2-[(2-chloro-phenyl)azo]-pyridine), and their associated electron transfer series. The results indicate that all electron transfer processes are primarily ligand-based, although in the case of the Mo analogue these are coupled to substantial electron density changes at the metal. The ability of pap to form radical anions finds a contrasting case in the di- nuclear Rh complex [Rh₂(μ-p-Clpap)₂ (cod)Cl₂], where the two ligand bridges act as acceptors of strong dπ∗ backbonding from a formally Rh–I centre. We then direct our attention to the endohedral Zintl clusters [Fe@Ge10]³− and [Mn@Pb12]³−, which reveal peculiar topologies. We have probed the electronic factors that influence their geometric preferences, and propose a model based on the shift of electron density from the endo- hedral metal to the cage to account for the observed geometries. Subsequently, we reassess the electronic structure of the xenophilic clusters Mn₂(thf)₄(Fe(CO)₄)₂ and [Mn(Mn(thf)₂)₃(Mn(CO)₄)₃]–. We conclude that these are best viewed as exchange coupled MnII centres bridged by closed- shell carbonylate fragments. In the closing chapter the reduction of NO₂– to NO by the complex [Cu(tct)(NO₂)]+ (tct = cis,cis-1,3,5-tris(cinnamylideneamino)cyclohexane) is studied, a process that mimics the enzyme-catalysed reaction. Two viable pathways for the reaction have been traced and key inter-mediates identified. Both direct release of NO or via decomposition of a Cu-NO complex are kinetically and thermodynamically feasible.

Echocardiographic measurements at Takotsubo cardiomyopathy : transient left ventricular dysfunction

Waldenborg, Micael January 2014 (has links)
Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) is a disease characterized by transient left ventricular (LV) dysfunction and typical wall motion abnormalities in apical parts, without obvious signs of coronary influence. Due to its elusive natural cause and the lack of clarified pathology, further studies are needed. Thirteen patients presented with an episode of TTC, and referred to Örebro University Hospital (USÖ), were prospectively included and investigated by comparisons made at onset (acute phase) against at follow-up three months later (recovery phase). Including echocardiographic measurements, focused on biventricular systolic long-axis function and conventional diastolic function (DF) variables. Systolic improvement was shown, while most DF data were unchanged, suggesting that TTC is mainly a systolic disease affecting both ventricles. Diagnosis should include multidisciplinary engagement, as TTC associates both with emotional stress and pathological markers of physiological stress. In this thesis, such approach was offered to the aforementioned patients; to see if a common denominator could be found, thus, contributing to better handling. Emotional state was assessed, along with an array of cardiac investigations in addition to echocardiography. Acutely, imbalance in the autonomic cardiac control was shown, as well as a trend toward posttraumatic stress, but specific findings allowing conclusions on differential diagnosis could not be demonstrated. By adding another 15 TTC patients (i.e. 28 in total), through collaboration with observers from USA, a retrospective echocardiographic analysis could be done to further study DF; concluding that TTC associates with impairment of conventional DF variables which tends to parallel the systolic recovery, in contrary to the initial result but in line with other causesof LV dysfunction. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is another method of choice at TTC. The USÖ patients had cardiac MRI, thus, a retrospective analysis was done to investigate the effect on LV geometry, both echocardiographic and by MRI; suggesting that TTC is consistently associated with increased LV mass, due to a local impact that seems to follow the change in LVconcentric wall motion.

Characteristics of High School Girls which May Lead to Early Marriage

Weaver, Hazel Stewart, 1960- 01 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study was to isolate some of the characteristics of tenth-grade girls which may lead to early marriage. The characteristics studied were: sibling rank, influence of a broken home, parents* education and occupations, mental ability, aptitude, scholastic achievement, study habits and attitudes, and personal problems identified by the subjects. A further problem of the study was the effectiveness of each of the characteristics in predicting the marriage of high school girls.

The Influence of Membership in a Broken Home on Test Performance of First Grade Children

Engemoen, Bonny L. 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between certain upset family conditions and the performance of young children from these families as measured by selected instruments. This research was also concerned with the lack of provision in commonly used evaluative techniques for discrimination between those children who actually possess low ability and those whose ability to perform is diminished because of emotional problems.

Metody odhadů složitosti důkazů ve výrokové logice / Methods of proving lower bounds in propositional logic

Peterová, Alena January 2013 (has links)
In the present work, we study the propositional proof complexity. First, we prove an exponential lower bound on the complexity of resolution applying directly Razborov's approximation method, which was previously used only for bounds on the size of monotone circuits. Next, we use the approximation method for a new proof of an exponential lower bound on the complexity of random resolution refutations. That should have further applications in separating some theories in bounded arithmetic. In both cases, we use a problem from the graph theory called Broken Mosquito Screens. Finally, we state a conjecture that the approximation method is applicable even for stronger propositional proof systems, for example Cutting Plane Proofs. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
