Macrozoobenthos Pohořského a Dobechovského potoka v Novohradských horách / Macrozoobenthos of the Pohořský and Dobechovský brooks in the Novohradské hory Mts.

KLOUDOVÁ, Jana January 2008 (has links)
The presented thesis deals with the structure and composition of macrozoobenthos of Pohořský and Dobechovský brooks in the Novohradské Mountains. The evaluation was based on the collections from 10 localities carried out in July 2001, March 2002 and July 2002/2003. In addition to determination and classification of the species found, the collections have also been qualitatively evaluated with the use of the diversity index (saprobic index, Belgian Biotic index) and the similarity index. It has been found that the zoobenthos population of Pohořský and Dobechovský brooks encompasses the species of both trout and grayling zones. In most taxa it concerns characteristic representatives of clear, flowing and adequately aerated water. Mutual species similarity of macrozoobenthos population of Pohořský and Dobechovský brooks is approximately 40%. The comparison of macrozoobenthos population diversity indices of Pohořský and Dobechovský brooks has shown that the Pohořský brook bentic fauna is, according to the obtained data, richer and better balanced. From the saprobity point of view, the Pohořský brook can mainly be placed into oligosaprobic stream class. The water of Dobechovský brook oscillates between oligosaprobic and {$\beta$}-mesosaprobic level.

Les Afriques de Peter Brook / The Africas of Peter Brook

Ruffini, Rosaria 12 November 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to analyze the dynamics of the relationship between Peter Brook and the African continent. The thesis traces the origins of this attraction, his evolution and the striking stages: the journeys, the plays and the long collaboration with many Africans actors. The study investigates the creation of the Centre International de Recherche Théâtrale [CIRT] in Paris; the arrival at the CIRT of the first African actor Malick Bowens; the adventure of the journey in Africa in 1972; the meeting with the Malian ethnologist and writer Amadou Hampâté Bâ; the arrival at the Bouffes du Nord of the actor-storyteller Sotigui Kouyaté that will become the main actor of many plays; the relationships with the South Africans playwrights Athol Fugard and Barney Simon. The dissertation dedicates a chapter to every "African" play: Les Iks [1975], L’Os [1979] Woza Albert ! [1989], Le Costume [1999], Tierno Bokar [2004], Sizwe Banzi est mort [2006], et Eleven and Twelve [2009], portrait of Africa of the beginning of the century. The “African way” helps to elucidate and to interpret the whole work of the director : it concretize on stage the premonitory theories written in The Empty Space.

Environmental factors related to the abundance and distribution of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) and brown trout (Salmo trutta) and seasonal movements of brown trout in selected Virginia streams

Josephson, Daniel C. January 1983 (has links)
The relationships between brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), brown trout (Salmo trutta), non-game fish populations and selected physical and chemical parameters were investigated in four streams draining the Blue Ridge Mountains in north-central Virginia during low flow conditions in August, 1981 and 1982. Multiple regression and discriminant function analysis identified average stream width and maximum stream temperature as the main environmental factors related to brook and brown trout abundance and distribution. Furthermore, consistent fish species assemblages relative to brown trout distribution were observed in the study streams. The movements of tagged brown trout in two streams were assessed for the period from June 1981 to July 1982. Most brown trout remained within 200 m of original tagging sections, 98.7% in the Conway River (78 out of 79) and 71.4% in the North Fork Thornton River (7 out of 9). The 1979, 1978 and 1977 year class fish (ages 2+, 3+ and 4+) exhibited extremely restricted movements and were invariably recaptured at original capture locations while the 1980 year class (age 1+) displayed small net upstream movements (<80 m) throughout the period. Two 1980 year class individuals displayed extensive movements (17.0 km downstream and 1.2 km upstream). These movements were characteristic of other stream resident brown trout populations. Results of this study suggest that brown trout may expand their range upstream into currently allopatric brook trout zones. It would likely be a slow but steady process which could be accelerated by infrequent long-range movements. The potential for establishment of reproducing brown trout populations and impacts of brown trout on native brook trout populations can be assessed utilizing fish species assemblages, average stream width and maximum stream temperature prior to further brown trout introductions in this region of Virginia. / Master of Science

Improving model structure and reducing parameter uncertainty in conceptual water balance models with the use of auxiliary data

Son, Kyongho January 2006 (has links)
[Truncated abstract] The use of uncertainty analysis is gaining considerable attention in catchment hydrological modeling. In particular, the choice of an appropriate model structure, the identifiability of parameter values, and the reduction of model predictive uncertainty are deemed as essential elements of hydrological modelling. The chosen model structure must be parsimonious, and the parameters used must either be derivable from field measured data or inferred unambiguously from analysis of catchment response data. In this thesis, a long-term water balance model for the Susannah Brook catchment in Western Australia has been pursued using the ?downward approach?, which is a systematic approach to determine the model with the minimum level of complexity, with parameter values that in theory are derivable from existing physiographic data relating to the catchment. Through the analysis of the rainfall-runoff response at different timescales, and the exploration of the climate, soil and vegetation controls on the water balance response, an initial model structure was formulated, and a priori model parameter values estimated. Further investigation with the use of auxiliary data such as deuterium concentration in the stream and groundwater level data exposed inadequacies in the model structure. Two more model structures were then proposed and investigated through formulating alternative hypotheses regarding the underlying causes of observed variability, including those associated with the absence of a contribution of deep groundwater flow to the streamflow, which was indicated by deuterium concentration and internal dynamics characterized by the observed groundwater levels. ... These differences are due to differences in the time delay between rainfall and recharge between upland and riparian regions. The ages of water recharging the groundwater and discharging from the catchment were estimated by assuming a piston flow mechanism. In the deeper, upland soils, the age of recharging water was considerably larger than the unsaturated zone delay would suggest; a recharge response 16 days after an infiltration event may involve water as much as 160 days old. On the other hand, the delay and the age of recharging water were much lower in the shallow riparian zone. Where the upland zone contributes significantly to discharge, the predicted difference between the rainfall-discharge response time and the average age of discharging water can be significant.

Home Literacy Factors Affecting Emergent Literacy Skills

Cassel, Robyn Valerie 01 January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to identify factors in the home literacy environment using the Stony Brook Family Reading Survey (SBFRS) in order to understand the extent to which these factors predict phonemic awareness and other basic reading skills, as assessed by selected subtests from the Woodcock-Johnson III (WJ III). The present study used archival data to examine the home literacy habits of a sample of parents and preschool children ages 3-5 years (range in months= 36-67) from a private and a public preschool with a combination of high- and low-income backgrounds and various ethnicities. Using exploratory factor analyses with 165 participants, three dimensions of family reading behavior were identified from the SBFRS including Home Reading Emphasis, Adult Responsibility, and Parental Academic Expectations. Each of the SBFRS rotated factors considered together in a stepwise multiple regression analysis contributed significantly over and above age to the prediction of phonological awareness as measured by the Phonemic Awareness 3 (PA3) Cluster from the WJ III. The best order of predictors for PA3 of the WJ III, with stepwise entry, included Factor 1: Home Reading Emphasis, Factor 3: Parental Academic Expectations, and Factor 2: Adult Responsibility. One of the SBFRS rotated factors, Factor 1: Home Reading Emphasis, considered in a stepwise multiple regression analysis using age as a covariate contributed significantly to the prediction of basic reading as measured by the Basic Reading Skills (BRS) Cluster of the WJ III [WJ III BRS=.38+.26(Factor1)]. Results demonstrate the importance of the aforementioned factors in relation to the prediction of emergent literacy. Future studies are needed to investigate parental expectations, adult responsibility for child outcomes, the impact of fathers, and the importance of dominant home language on the emergence of literacy. Revision of the SBFRS, in addition to studies that include a wider range of SES, racial/ethnic, and linguistic groups, would help to standardize the measure for future use.

Dynamika revitalizovaného koryta Sviňovického potoka / Channel dynamics of the restored Sviňovický Brook

Hujslová, Jana January 2010 (has links)
The aim of this thesis was to monitor and to evaluate development and morphological dynamics of the Sviňovický Brook channel after the restoration in 2005. Field surveying and aerial images by low-flying model planes were used to detect recent channel dynamics after the restoration in 2005. Channel changes were compared to water level measurements. The additional method was grain size analysis of bed sediments. Orthoimage and cadastral maps were utilized to document changes in channel position over the past 160 years. Field surveying detected intensive bed and bank erosion in restored channel caused by high stream velocity from the fortified upper flow. The restored channel has markedly widened and deepened. The largest changes occurred during floods in July 2006. The intensive eroding- depositing processes remodeled the channel. The changes in channel bed level were up 30 cm and bank erosion locally exceeded 1 meter. The longitudinal profile of the channel was leveled. The road bridge began to be obstacle to the longitudinal profile development. It causes deposition upstream and erosion downstream. The largest bank disruptions in the sector up the road bridge were fortified by quarried stones at the end of 2007. The channel has not shown any significant changes since 2007. With the growing density...
