The present master thesis analyses the idiolects of presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump against the background of the speeches of other candidates for the post of President of the United States in 2016. Using the 'corpus-assisted discourse analysis' (Partington et al., 2013), the thesis strives to uncover words, phrases and patterns that distinguish the speech of the two candidates in a political discourse from other presidential candidates. First, the thesis examines the keywords, collocations, negative keywords and clusters of the respective target corpora. While the main focal points of the study are lexical and grammatical indicators of style, proper nouns and lexical indicators of content ('aboutness keywords') are subjects to analysis as well. In the next step the results of the respective analyses are compared, i.e. the differences between the speeches of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are discussed.

This thesis aims to investigate the differences between what collocations are used for ‘husband’ and ‘wife’ in films and contemporary culture. The comparison spans through different decades and the decades will also be compared and analysed. The thesis will investigate if the collocates reflect the societal change and if so, can the results relate to existing power structures/gender roles? The background for the thesis consists of information about marriage history, films and their influence on culture, what a collocation is and previous research on collocation. The method used for this thesis was Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies which includes both corpus studies and discourse analysis. Consequently, a more in-depth understanding of the results and tables were given. To classify the collocates collected from the Movie Corpus (which represents movies) and the Corpus of Historical American English (representing culture) the results are presented Caldas-Coulthard and Moon’s categorisation schema. After this, in the discussion, the proportional distribution is presented because the corpora are different sizes and this way they can be compared correctly. The conclusion is that movies reflect culture somewhat, but it lacks in some areas. However, some patterns can be found. ‘Wife’ and ‘husband’ are discussed differently, and the difference in collocates shows that. Moreover, the results seem to reflect typical stereotypes that do exist and has existed.

Modality in Spiritual Literature : A Corpus Aided Discourse Study on Sadhguru and Eckhart Tolle

This study investigates and discusses how two spiritual teachers from different parts of the world interact with their devotees, what the probable impacts of their interaction are, and whether they speak similarly or differently based on the use of modal auxiliary verbs and pronouns. Linguistically speaking, the mystics mostly have to address their audience/readers in a particular manner with expressions which represent certainty, possibility, obligation and so on; thus, a study of such is necessary and modal auxiliary verbs represent such expressions. The two primary texts were chosen based on contemporary work and popularity. One of the texts was authored by Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, a spiritual teacher, an international spokesperson and a popular author. The other text was by Eckhart Tolle, a spiritual teacher and best-selling author. A corpus-assisted discourse approach was taken while looking into modal auxiliary verbs and their pronoun bigrams using Ant-Conc and Log-likelihood Calculator. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were taken for the analysis.  Findings suggest three things. First, both authors use similar types of modal verbs (epistemic) in most cases. Second, after comparing the type of modal verbs (epistemic/deontic) significant differences are observed. When the authors use epistemic modals, the choice of bigrams addresses different audience types and the way they approach a concept is different. Sadhguru (2020) addresses the general audience/readers whereas Tolle (2004) addresses the readers who need spiritual guidance. Finally, the choice of modal verbs represents mostly certainty that keeps the mood of the book calm and content for the readers. To sum up, spiritual teachers mostly speak from their experience and represent the expression of certainty and possibility though they address their readers differently.

The thesis deals with discourse surrounding the topic of the Greek debt crisis (GDC) in the online version of the British daily newspaper the Guardian (www.theguardian.com). The study builds on a bilateral division of the EU public discourse on the economic crisis, distinguishing between two opposing perspectives: "the Northern diagnosis" (DeGrauwe 2011: 5) prevailing in Germany and other creditor states, and 'the Southern opinion' on the situation held mainly by the debtor countries. The thesis examines the position of the Guardian in relation to this bilateral discourse framework. The Guardian represents a liberal, socially aware and traditionally EU-supportive newspaper that is published in a country which counts among the Europe's leading economic and political powers, a country that is also characterized by strong Eurosceptic tendencies. These aspects form a complex background with regard to the EEC/GDC discourse framework. There are factors supporting both "the Northern diagnosis" of the GDC and those suggesting inclination to 'the Southern opinion'. The analysis, dealing with a self-collected corpus (altogether 349 texts, 277 973 words) consisting of the Guardian online news on the GDC is situated - both theoretically and methodologically - in the field of Corpus- assisted discourse studies...

[pt] Sistemas de múltiplas antenas de larga escala são técnicas fundamentais para sistemas de comunicação sem fio do futuro, que deverão servir dezenas de usuários por estação rádio-base. Neste contexto, um problema chave é o aumento do consumo de energia à medida que o número de antenas cresce. Recentemente, CADs de baixa resolução têm atraído grande interesse de pesquisa. Em particular, CADs de 1 bit são adequados para sistemas de larga escala devido ao seu baixo custo e consumo de energia. Nesta tese, CADs de 1 bit são usados em três diferentes abordagens de projeto, que operam a taxa de Nyquist e a taxas superiores a taxa de Nyquist com estratégias de amostragem uniforme e dinâmica. Nos sistemas operando a taxa de Nyquist, algoritmos de estimação de canal que exploram o conhecimento da baixa resolução e um novo esquema de detecção e decodificação iterativas são propostos, em que códigos low-density paritycheck de bloco curto são considerados para evitar alta latência. Nos sistemas operando a taxas superiores a taxa de Nyquist com sobreamostragem uniforme, algoritmos eficientes de estimação de canal e de detecção com janela deslizante com exploração da baixa resolução são propostos. Além disso, são deduzidas expressões analíticas associadas aos limitantes de Cramér-Rao para os sistemas com sobreamostragem. Resultados numéricos ilustram o desempenho dos algoritmos de estimação de canal propostos e existentes e os limitantes teóricos deduzidos. Nos sistemas operando com sobreamostragem dinâmica, duas abordagens de projeto são desenvolvidas: uma técnica baseada na maximização da soma das taxas e uma técnica baseada na minimização do erro médio quadrático. Em seguida, três algoritmos de redução de dimensão são apresentados e investigados. Resultados de simulações mostram que os sistemas com sobreamostragem dinâmica têm melhor desempenho do que os sistemas com sobreamostragem uniforme em termos de soma das taxas alcançáveis e de taxa de erro de símbolos, enquanto o custo computacional das técnicas examinadas é comparável. / [en] Large-scale multiple-antenna systems are a key technique for future wireless communications, which will serve tens of users per base station (BS). In this scenario, one problem faced is the large energy consumption as the number of receive antennas scales up. Recently, low-resolution analogto-digital converters (ADCs) have attracted much attention. Specifically, 1-bit ADCs in the front-end are suitable for such systems due to their low cost and low energy consumption. In this thesis, 1-bit ADCs are applied in three different system designs, which operate at the Nyquist rate and faster than Nyquist rates along with uniform and dynamic strategies. In the Nyquist-sampling system, low-resolution-aware channel estimation algorithms and a novel iterative detection and decoding scheme are proposed, where short block length low-density parity-check codes are considered for avoiding high latency. In the faster than Nyquist rates with uniform oversampling system, lowresolution-aware channel estimation and sliding window based detection algorithms are proposed due to their low computational cost and high detection accuracy. Particularly, analytical expressions associated with the Bayesian Cramér-Rao bounds for the oversampled systems are presented. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the performance of the proposed channel estimation algorithms and the derived theoretical bounds. In the dynamic-oversampling system, two different system designs are devised, namely, sum rate and mean square error based. Three different dimension reduction algorithms are presented and thoroughly investigated. Simulation results show that the systems with the proposed dynamic oversampling outperform the uniformly oversampled system in terms of the computational cost, achievable sum rate and symbol error rate performance.
