Žemių užtvankų žemutinio bjefo atraminės sienos (toliau – AS) yra veikiamos nepalankių klimatinių poveikių, vandens, grunto slėgio ir kt. apkrovų. Veikiant agresyvioms aplinkoms ir apkrovoms atsiranda pažaidos, kurios ardo atraminę sieną bei mažina konstrukcijos laikomąją galią. Darbo tikslas – įvertinti nepalankių aplinkos poveikių įtaką atraminių sienų skerspjūvio sumažėjimui. 2007–2010 metais mokslinių ekspedicijų metu įvertinta 21 hidromazgo atraminių sienų būklė. Apžiūrėtos Kauno, Panevėžio, Utenos ir Marijampolės apskričių hidromazgų atraminės sienos, fiksuotos svarbiausios pažaidos. Detaliau ištirta Antanavo hidromazgo atraminė siena, įvertintas sienos skerspjūvio sumažėjimas dėl nepalankių aplinkos poveikių. Pagal tyrimų duomenis pasiūlyti pažaidų, mažinančių atraminių sienų skerspjūvį, remonto būdai. / Retaining walls of lower head–water of ground dams are influenced by negative climatic impacts, water, ground pressure and other loads. Upon the effect of aggressive environment and loads, deteriorations occur destroying the retaining wall as well as reducing the bearing capacity of the constructions. The aim of the work is to evaluate reduction of cross–section of retaining walls as a result of negative environmental impacts. Through the period 2007–2010 on scientific expeditions the condition of retaining walls of 21 hydroshemes was assessed. Retaining walls of hydroschemes in the counties of Kaunas, Panevezys, Utena and Marijampole have been examined, the most significant deteriorations were fixed. Retaining wall in Antanavas hydropower station was examined in detail; reduction of cross–section of retaining wall due to the influence of negative environmental impacts was assessed.

THE ROLE OF COBALT-60 SOURCE IN INTENSITY MODULATED RADIATION THERAPY: FROM MODELING FINITE SOURCES TO TREATMENT PLANNING AND CONFORMAL DOSE DELIVERYDhanesar, SANDEEP 23 August 2013 (has links)
Cobalt-60 (Co-60) units played an integral role in radiation therapy from the mid-1950s to the 1970s. Although they continue to be used to treat cancer in some parts of the world, their role has been significantly reduced due to the invention of medical linear accelerators. A number of groups have indicated a strong potential for Co-60 units in modern radiation therapy. The Medical Physics group at the Cancer Center of the Southeastern Ontario and Queen’s University has shown the feasibility of Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) via simple conformal treatment planning and dose delivery using a Co-60 unit.
In this thesis, initial Co-60 tomotherapy planning investigations on simple uniform phantoms are extended to actual clinical cases based on patient CT data. The planning is based on radiation dose data from a clinical Co-60 unit fitted with a multileaf collimator (MLC) and modeled in the EGSnrc Monte Carlo system. An in house treatment planning program is used to calculate IMRT dose distributions. Conformal delivery in a single slice on a uniform phantom based on sequentially delivered pencil beams is verified by Gafchromic film. Volumetric dose distributions for Co-60 serial tomotherapy are then generated for typical clinical sites that had been treated at our clinic by conventional 6MV IMRT using Varian Eclipse treatment plans. The Co-60 treatment plans are compared with the clinical IMRT plans using conventional matrices such as dose volume histograms (DVH). Dose delivery based on simultaneously opened MLC leaves is also explored and a novel MLC segmentation method is proposed. In order to increase efficiency of dose calculations, a novel convolution based fluence model for treatment planning is also proposed.
The ion chamber measurements showed that the Monte Carlo modeling of the beam data under the MIMiC MLC is accurate. The film measurements from the uniform phantom irradiations confirm that IMRT plans from our in-house treatment planning system are deliverable. Comparing the Co-60 dose distributions and DVHs to the IMRT plans from the clinic indicates that Co-60 is able to provide similar dose conformality to targets and dose sparing to critical organs. The results of the novel MLC segmentation algorithm and the photon fluence model proposed in this work compared well with the Monte Carlo calculations.
In summary, the investigations presented in this thesis confirm that Co-60 tomotherapy is indeed capable of providing state-of-the-art conformal dose delivery. Improved lumped parameter thermal modelling of synchronous generatorsMejuto, Carlos January 2010 (has links)
Within the existing available mix of numerical and analytical thermal analysis options, lumped parameter thermal modelling is selected as the operational backbone to develop an improved novel synchronous generator thermal modelling package. The objective is for the creation of a user friendly quick feedback tool, which can serve as a means to make quick machine design thermal calculations and answer customer queries quickly and reliably. Furthermore, thermally improved generator designs will allow for inevitable operational losses to be channelled away from the machine more efficiently. As a result, machine component temperatures will be reduced, allowing lower generator thermal ratings. The end result will be smaller, longer lasting, more efficient generators, with the ability to be adapted with greater ease to particular applications. With the contribution of selected numerical analysis techniques, mainly finite element analysis for the distribution of iron losses, the MySolver thermal modelling package is developed and presented in this thesis. It is this combination of numerical and analytical tools that improves synchronous generator thermal modelling accuracy, but ultimately it is the lumped parameter nature of the thermal models developed that makes MySolver succeed as a reliable quick feedback electrical machine thermal design tool, validated using experimental results for a wide range of operating conditions. The initial part of the thesis analyses the electrical machine thermal modelling techniques available today, indicating advantages and disadvantages associated with each one, and providing a rationale for the selection of lumped parameter modelling to be used by MySolver. The development of the synchronous generator lumped parameter thermal models is detailed, with examples on its construction presented. Subsequently, finite element analysis is utilised to predict the distribution of machine iron losses across the rotor and stator laminations, with the findings applied to MySolver. Furthermore, a study is performed into the lumped parameter discretisation level needed to effectively represent machine windings. MySolver is experimentally verified using experimental data from a fully instrumented synchronous generator and this data is also used to obtain further insight into the temperature distribution within the generator. In the final part results are evaluated and the use of MySolver for modelling and optimising electrical machines is discussed. Finally, appropriate conclusions on the work presented are drawn.

Détermination ab initio de potentiels électroniques pour le calcul de données spectroscopiques / Ab Initio Determination of Electronic Potentials for Spectroscopic Datas ComputationBrites, Vincent 17 September 2010 (has links)
La structure et la spectroscopie de molécules d'intérêt astrophysique ont été étudiées par des méthodes de calcul électronique ab initio hautement corrélées. Notre démarche a tout d'abord été d'étudier des systèmes allant de deux à quatre atomes, afin de voir l'influence du niveau de calcul électronique utilisé lors de la détermination de données comparables aux résultats expérimentaux. Ainsi, l'étude de la spectroscopie des états électroniques de la molécule AlCl a été entreprise. Les résultats obtenus pour ce système reproduisent parfaitement les mesures expérimentales existantes tout en introduisant la compréhension des phénomènes observés. Nous avons ensuite prédit un ensemble de données pour les ions AlCl+ et AlCl2+, en utilisant la même méthodologie. Nous avons également entrepris des calculs de durée de vie de prédissociation pour les molécules SH et SH+. Nos courbes d'énergie potentielle hautement corrélée nous ont permis de reproduire avec une grande précision les durées de vie de prédissociation des niveaux rovibrationnels de SH. Par la suite, nous avons étudié une molécule d'intérêt astrophysique, détectée dans l'atmosphère de Titan, N2H+. Nous avons généré des surfaces d'énergie potentielle multidimensionnelles pour les états fondamentaux des molécules N2H+, N2H2+ et N2HAr+. Ces surfaces ont été utilisées pour le calcul des niveaux rovibrationnels de ces ions et de leurs espèces deutérées. Un excellent accord avec les donné es expérimentales disponibles a été obtenu, et un ensemble de constantes spectroscopiques a été prédit. Enfin, nous nous sommes intéressés à une molécule plus grande, Si(C2H3)4. Cette étude nous a permis d'établir une méthodologie pour le calcul de la structure et des états électroniques excités de molécules de taille moyenne. Nous avons également effectué des calculs sur l'ion Si(C2H3)4+, afin d'interpréter sa fragmentation mesurée lors de l'expérience d'impact d'électron réalisée à l'Université de Bratislava durant cette thèse / Highly correlated ab initio methodologies were used to investigate the structure and the spectroscopy of small and medium sized molecules at different levels of theory. Our results are compared to the available experimental data. For the AlCl molecule, our computed spectroscopic constants were in good agreement with the experimental ones, allowing us to predict a set of predictive data for the less known AlCl+ and AlCl2+ ions. After that, we treated the predissociation lifetimes of the A state of SH and SH+. Our highly correlated calculations allowed us to reproduce the lifetimes measured experimentally. Thereafter, multidimensional potential energy surfaces of the ground state of N2H+, N2H2+ and N2HAr+ were generated. These surfaces were used for the calculations of rovibrational levels of these ions and their respective deuterated species. An overall excellent agreement was obtained comparing to the available experimental measurements. Finall y, we investigated the Si(C2H3)4 molecule in order to establish a methodology for the treatment of the structure and electronic excited states of medium sized molecules. We also studied the reactivity of the Si(C2H3)4+ ion for a tentative assignment of the mass spectra obtained in the University of Bratislava by an electron impact experiment

Topological band theory and Majorana fermions : With focus on self-consistent lattice modelsBjörnson, Kristofer January 2016 (has links)
One of the most central concepts in condensed matter physics is the electronic band structure. Although band theory was established more than 80 years ago, recent developments have led to new insights that are formulated in the framework of topological band theory. In this thesis a subset of topological band theory is presented, with particular focus on topological supercon- ductors and accompanying Majorana fermions. While simple models are used to introduce basic concepts, a physically more realistic model is also studied intensely in the papers. Through self- consistent tight-binding calculations it is confirmed that Majorana fermions appear in vortex cores and at wire end points when the superconductor is in the topologically non-trivial phase. Many other properties such as the topological invariant, experimental signatures in the local density of states and spectral function, unconventional and odd-frequency pairing, the precense of spin-polarized currents and spin-polarization of the Majorana fermions, and a local π-phase shift in the order parameter at magnetic impurities are also investigated.

Unpacking Swedish Sustainability : The promotion and circulation of sustainable urbanismHult, Anna January 2017 (has links)
Sweden has been praised for its achievements, and promoted as a role model, in sustainable urban development. This thesis, comprising five separate articles and a cover essay, is a critical study of the Swedish urban sustainable imaginary. The first article examines how this imaginary is produced. Using an actor-network theory approach, I view the Swedish pavilion at the World Expo in Shanghai in 2010 as a node in a wider network, arguing that the notion of decoupling GDP growth from CO2 emissions constitutes a central storyline. The second and third papers study the circulation of this imaginary in practice, specifically examining two cases of exporting Swedish sustainable urban planning to Chinese eco-city projects. Few of these plans, I note, were materialised in built form; rather, they contributed to the circulation of a repetitive model of sustainable urbanism, reinforcing a paradoxical idea of urban sustainability as “green islands of privilege”. The storyline of decoupling – and the circulating business of sustainable urbanism into which it feeds – is based on a deficient territorial view of space. In this research, I advocate a political ecology perspective and relational view of space, wherein there are no such things as sustainable or unsustainable cities. Rather, planning should aim for more just socio-environmental relations within and across urban borders. The fourth and fifth papers address the wider question of how planning can foster more socio-environmentally just forms of urban sustainability. Here, I emphasise a consumption perspective on greenhouse gas emissions as an important counter-narrative and analyse two Swedish municipalities’ efforts to lessen citizens’ consumption through policy and planning practice. This research highlights the need to continuously develop and contest imaginaries and planning practices of sustainability, of who is perceived as “sustainable” and what a socio-environmentally just perspective might mean in practice for policy makers and planners alike. / <p>QC 20170120</p>
