Grade one teachers methods of teaching pre-reading skills to second language learners in an inner-city school

Morgan, Leanne January 2017 (has links)
Education is a fundamental precondition for progress and growth in South Africa (Spaull, 2011, p. 1). Literacy opens the doors to better livelihoods, improved health and expanded opportunity (UNESCO, 2011). Illiteracy is a serious constraint to improving education standards in South Africa. Prominent research studies stress the low levels of reading ability across the country. At the onset of Grade One, pre-reading skills are taught. Pre-reading skills are foundational skills and essential for later reading success. Teachers in English Second Language environments face the daunting challenge of teaching learners to read in a foreign language. This qualitative research study, which was conducted at a low-fee private school in Pretoria Central Business district, aimed to explore the methods that educators were using to teach second language English Learners (ESL) pre-reading skills. Data collected from semi-structured interviews, lesson observations and document analysis revealed that educators had a limited theoretical knowledge of pre-reading skills due to a lack of tertiary education and curriculum training. Numerous methods of teaching pre-reading skills were identified during pre-reading lesson observations. The synthetic phonics approach, multisensory teaching, using dramatization and subtractive bilingualism were methods of instruction used to develop phonemic awareness and English oral language competency. The study highlighted the numerous challenges faced by ESL teaching working in a low-socioeconomic environment and the ways in which the teachers overcame these challenges. Based on this study’s results, recommendations are provided to enhance the teaching of pre-reading skills to ESL learners. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2017. / Educational Psychology / MEd / Unrestricted

Ap4A-RNA v IgE aktivovaných žírných buňkách / Ap4A-RNA in IgE activated mast cells

Potužník, Jiří František January 2021 (has links)
Mast cells are tissue resident members of the immune system. They have a wide range of functions and receptors including the FcεRI receptor, which gets activated by binding to IgE bound to an antigen. When the cells are activated in this manner, a process termed the LysRS- Ap4A-MITF signalling pathway occurs, resulting in the translocation of the Lys tRNA synthetase into the nucleus and an activation of its moonlighting activity - the production of diadenosine tetraphosphate (Ap4A). Ap4A is a dinucleoside polyphosphate, a type of ubiquitous molecule present in all domains of life. They are made up of two nucleosides joined together by a 5' to 5' phosphodiester bridge of variable lengths. Recently, these molecules have been shown to serve as non-canonical initiating nucleotides during bacterial transcription, where they function as 5' RNA caps, similar to the well-known 7- methylguanosine eukaryotic mRNA cap. In this thesis, I present proof of existence of Ap 4A capped RNA in mast cells, a previously unknown 5' RNA structure in eukaryotic cells, and I attempt to pinpoint its role in the activation of these cells and in the wider context of mast cell mediated immune response. Keywords: mast cells, RNA caps, Dinucleoside polyphosphates, Ap 4A, RNA modification, IgE, FcεRI receptor, Lysine tRNA synthetase

Helping in the Workplace: A Social Cognitive Perspective

Kalanick, Julie Lynn 13 May 2008 (has links)
This study employed an experimental design intended to be an analog to the workplace to examine a person by situation interactive effect on OCBs, which were evaluated as prosocial behaviors. This study also sought to provide initial empirical support for the two-stage social cognitive model of OCBs proposed by Hauenstein and Kalanick (2008). Participants were 194 undergraduates. The study was a 2 (Helpfulness) by 2 (Fairness) design. After completing distracter tasks 1 and 2, participants received either a helpfulness prime or a control prime (task 3). Participants then either experienced either a fair manipulation or an unfair manipulation. Results indicated a distinction between the decision to help and helping effort, which has not been thoroughly examined in literature on OCBs. Results revealed main effects for the helpfulness prime and fairness manipulation on the decision to engage in helping. The nature of these effects was that participants helped more when they were primed with helpfulness and when they experienced fairness. However, once helping commenced, there was an interactive effect between helpfulness and fairness such that the helpfulness prime had a stronger effect on participants treated unfairly. Implications for future research on OCBs are discussed. / Ph. D.

The township schools foundation phase teachers' experiences in the implementation of CAPS

Magagula, Sihle Wendy. January 2016 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Management, University of the Witwatersrand, in 25% fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Management (in the field of Public and Development Management) 2015. / The purpose of the study was to explore the township schools foundation phase teachers' experiences in the implementation of CAPS with regard to curriculum implementation and how their knowledge and experiences influence the implementation of the curriculum. The literature review provides insights into the current practices regarding CAPS in the foundation phase in South African primary schools comparatively throughout the world. A qualitative case study research was adopted for this study and semistructured interviews. The findings highlight that although teachers experienced challenges in implementing CAPS, they acknowledge the benefits of previous workshops. The article recommends that curriculum designers and the Department of Education need to urgently review CAPS. It has been emphasised that teachers need to be actively involved during the review process. Amongst all the requirements for curriculum implementation, teachers need to be constantly monitored and supported to ensure the quality of teaching and learning. / AC2016

Análise de blocos de concreto armado sobre duas estacas com cálice totalmente embutido mediante presença de viga de travamento / Analysis of two pile caps reinforced concrete with embedded socket by presence of locking beam

Barros, Rodrigo 22 May 2009 (has links)
The present research studies the behavior of two pile caps reinforced concrete with embedded socked used in connections of pre-cast concrete structures. It was particularly evaluated the effect provoked by the locking beam on the pile-caps when supported by the socket lateral walls. Three-dimensional numerical analyses using software based on finite element method (FEM) were developed considering the nonlinear physical behavior of the material. To evaluate the adopted software, a comparative analysis was made using numerical and experimental results obtained from other software. In the pile caps studied, it was noticed a variation in the wall thickness, socket interface, strut angle inclination and action on beam. The results show that the presence of beam does not change significantly the pile caps behavior and that the socket wall is able to transfer effectively the force from the beam to the pile caps. By the tensions on the bars of longitudinal reinforcement, it was possible to obtain the force on the tie and the strut angle inclination before the collapse of models. It was found that the angles present more inclinations than those used in the design, which was made based on strut and tie model.

Análise do comportamento de blocos sobre quatro estacas com cálice embutido / Analysis of the behavior of four-pile caps with embedded socket

Marek Filho, Carlos Antônio 19 August 2010 (has links)
The rationalization and the industrialization of the civil constructions have stimulated the construction process based on precast elements. One of the main designer\'s worries is about the behavior of the joints between precast elements, and the joints between superstructure and the foundations which are determinant in the construction stability and behavior of elements. In reason of the mechanism of transference of the forces from column to pile-cap by socket connections, the behavior of pile-caps with joints for precast columns has some specificity. The behavior of four-pile caps with embedded socket for precast columns joints is studied in this research. The study is based in nonlinear numerical analysis of three dimensional models considering the cracking in concrete, the reinforcement and the joint interface. The behavior of pile caps under centered and eccentric vertical force is described by ultimate force, cracking patterns, principal stresses flow and reinforcements strains. The results suggests that occurs the transfer of forces from column to the pile cap in the socket walls with smooth interface, however the intensity is not enough to form the struts, and the risk of development of punching shear in pile caps which columns are connected by smooth interface socket walls.

Botelho, Isabela Borges January 2017 (has links)
Demands on mental health, including drug use, require constant updates from the Centers for Psychosocial Care Alcohol and Other Drugs (CAPS AD). This way, the objective of this study was to know the strategies used in the assistance provided to users of alcohol and other drugs of a CAPS AD III in the Federal District and the possibilities of applying the evidence-based approach to health. It was carried out in two stages: the first stage was a qualitative research of the Case Study type, in which a situational diagnosis was made. The data were collected through three sources of information: semi-structured interviews with professionals with open-ended questions about individual care, nursing and therapeutic groups; participant observation and documentary analysis. Twenty one technical staff were interviewed. The average experience time in the area in question was 4.4 years. CAPS is located in a region of significant drug use. They have 22 groups / workshop. From the activities developed, six have a significant audience, but are conducted only by one professional. Therefore, during vacation periods and server licenses, activities are stopped. Note that some activities do not follow a structure or manual, being carried out according to the professional training of the server. It was also reported that the lack of material resources to carry out the groups and workshops, telephone, internet, electronic medical records makes it difficult and / or makes difficult the progress of the consultations and networking. In addition to the extensive CAPS network, the number of shelters (social network) is still scarce summing up the economic difficulty of the patients prevent them from having greater access to the service. Another problem reported is server demotivation and lack of proper supervision. In the second stage, an evidence-based bibliographic research was carried out, identifying the most effective intervention techniques for the treatment of patients using SPA, which are not yet available in CAPS and are likely to be implemented in the service. Those ones which are already used have been compared with evidence-based studies in order to verify what could be improved. The techniques were described as public (adults, adolescents, family). It is concluded that in the structure of a CAPS AD, it can be glimpsed changes in the care practices performed and also new practices to be inserted through the advances obtained in the treatment techniques using evidence based health as a guideline.

Lauermann, Graciela Seibt Licks January 2017 (has links)
This research´s objective was to know the profile of the people who use psychoactive substances at CAPS in Três Passos, RS and analize if the activities offered to the patients were in accordance to the necessities raised. It was a cross-sectional study with a quantitative nature, in which the data were collected through individual interviews during 2 months, whose instruments of data collection were socio-demographic record, ASSIST, ASI6 Light and DSM-V Diagnostic Interview. It was verified that of the 97 patients attended at CAPS, 24 were users of psychoactive substances. The majority were men (79.2%), caucasian (95.8%), born in Três Passos (62.5%), unmarried, (37.5% single and 25% separated /divorced) and concentrated in the age group of 41 to 50 years old (33%, median = 44, mean = 41,75 minimum = 22, maximum = 62). A few people were working (16.7%) and half received Sickness Aid. The main substance of abuse was alcohol (66.66%), followed by cocaine (29.2%). There were reports of injecting drugs use (n = 2), but not in the last 3 months. Based on the scores generated by ASI6 Light, the most serious areas were of psychiatric problems (0.11, SD = 0.48), medical problems (0.04, SD = 0.48) and problems related to alcohol ( -0.66, DP = 0.48). The areas that scored the least were those with drug problems (-1.81, SD = 1.68), socio-family problems (-2.34, SD = 1.31) and legal problems (-2.55, SD = 1.91). In the area of employment / support a little more than half of the users (n = 13, 54.17%) consider that they don´t have enough income to pay for the basic necessities. In relation to the activities offered at CAPS, the Psychology area concentrates the highest number of appointments in the period (40 visits), which meets the needs of users who presented high scores in the area of psychiatric problems. However, the high scores of medical problems showed the need of expanding the performance of medical professionals (25 appointments) and nursing (6 appointments). Likewise, the high number of Benefit / Sickness Aid and the opinion of the interviwed people that their income is not enough, indicate more attention needed to the social aspect in the planning of the therapeutic plan. In short, the standardization of an instrument that evaluates multiple spheres of the patient's life, such as ASI6 Light, enables a more complex evaluation of the patients and a more detailed survey of their needs, being able to contribute to better treatment plans according to the current situation of the patients.

Siniak, Débora Schlotefeldt January 2018 (has links)
It is a quantitative study, descriptive case study. The objective was to analyze the organization of the network for the care of drug users from a Psychosocial Care Center - alcohol and drugs. The survey was in a municipality in the western border of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Data collection took two stages following the guidelines of blanchet and James (2011) and occurred in the period from August to December 2017. The data analysis was organized from the use of a program called ucinet that performs the measurement of the data obtained and allows a visual analysis through the graphical representation of the network. The study was guided by the methodological framework of social network analysis (SNA). The results indicated the existence of 37 actors involved directly or indirectly in the care of drug users within the municipality. It was found that great part of the metrics presented higher values with respect to the forwarding and receipt of users within the system, characterizing the majority of bonds made between the actors. On the other hand, the metrics that relate to the coordination of cases, joint programs and consultancies, which represent the degree of interaction between devices, had much lower metrics. These results demonstrate the difficulty on the part of the network to act in an integrated manner and build opportunities for joint care. The Psychosocial Care Center - Drug and Alcohol and the Family Health Strategy are some of the main services that route and also receive demands related to drug users. Face it, defends the idea that within the network there should be no hierarchy or degree of importance among the services, because each of them has its role and has different characteristics, which are fundamental to the establishment and maintenance of networking. Therefore, we need to discern the network with the idea of decentralization and connectivity between the actors. In this scope, it is necessary to think in forms of joint action that is conducive to the construction of a truly integrated system and cooperation.

Análise numérica e experimental de blocos de concreto armado sobre duas estacas com cálice externo, parcialmente embutido e embutido utilizado na ligação pilar-fundação / Numerical and experimental analysis of two pile caps reinforced concrete with external, partially embedded and embedded socket used in column-foundation connection

Barros, Rodrigo 08 November 2013 (has links)
The present research studies the behavior of two pile caps reinforced concrete used in column-foundation connection of precast concrete structures, submitted to centered load. This situation allows that pile-foundation connection can occur by socket, which can be embedded, partially embedded or external, with socket walls over the pile caps. The research presents an experimental and numerical study of two pile caps reinforced concrete with external, partially embedded and embedded socket, submitted to centered load, using 1:2 scaled models. These models present the socket walls with rough and smooth interface. The results are compared with two reference models, which present a monolithic connection between pile caps and column. Three-dimensional numerical analyses using software based on finite element method (FEM) were developed considering the nonlinear physical behavior of the material. It was observed that pile caps with rough interface present stiffness and ultimate load greater than pile caps with smooth interface. Additional reinforcement using on models with smooth interface add a 15% resistance on models, but this effect did was not observed on the model with rough interface. Particularly, models with smooth interface and embedded socket present a flexible pile caps behavior.
