An investigation of the use of software development environments in the industry

An, Ping January 2004 (has links)
Software engineering tools are being used in the industry in order to improve the productivity and the quality of the software development process. The properties of those tools are being perceived to be unsatisfactory. For example, researchers have found that some problems are due to deficient integration among the tools. Furthermore, a continuing problem is that there is a gap between the IT education and real demand of tool-skills form IT industry. Consequently, knowledge is needed of the properties of software development tools as well an understanding of demanded tool-skill from the industry. The purpose of this study is to survey commercial software development environment (SDEs) that are used today in professional software engineering and discuss their advantages adn disadvantages. A secondary goal of the study is to identify the actual requirements from the industry on the IT-education. A questionnaire was sent out to 90 software developers and IT managers of 30 IT companies in Sweden. The results of the survey show that IT companies, for most part, use SDEs from commercial software vendors. Respondents report that common problems of the SDEs are the following: bad integration among the tools, problems to trace software artifacts in the different phases of the programming cycle, and deficient support for version control and system configuration. Furthermore, some tools are difficult to use which results in a time-consuming development process. We conclude that future software development environments need to provide better support for integration, automation, and configuration management. Regarding the required tool-skills, we believe that the IT education would gain from including commercial tools that cover the whole software product lifecycle in the curriculum.

Ambiente integrado de modelagem distribuída para sistemas de informação na internet / Integrated environment for distributed modeling of web information systems

Pompermaier, Leandro Bento January 1999 (has links)
The main goal of this work is to explore some issues related to collaborative development of information systems on the Internet. A Diagrammatic Editor on the Internet (EDI) that supports collaborative specification of applications is described. This editor uses hyperdocument technology and funcionalities, offering features such as information sharing, collaboration between several authors, multiple views of the stored conceptual data, among others. EDI was implemented using the Java language, and designed with the purpose of being generic to enable the easy creation of specific editors for different diagrammatic notations. The use of annotations for the joint development of information systems on the Internet is proposed. With these annotations the development process becomes more collaborative and the quality of the final product may increase. Annotations are based on two types of users: the owner, who is an author responsible for the creation of a document, and the collaborator, who makes annotations on those documents. Annotations (identified by one specific colour) can be of inclusion, change and removal of concepts (views), or recording of comments.

Free Software is more and more earning space in software market. Nowadays, there are several projects of this kind in progress around the world. This new software development model brings along a new philosophy, affecting many of the software industry principles. Despite of its importance and growth, in most cases, free software development is not being done according to the best practices of Software Engineering. In this scenario, many times software processes are not formally defined. This paper discusses an effort for defining a standard process for free software projects at LabES/UFES. The initial goal of defining these processes is to apply it in ODE´s Project, a project that aims to develop a software engineering environment as a free software The goal of this work is to define an infrastructure to support free software projects at LabES/UFES, which includes standard software processes for open source software projects, as well as the definition of requirements for the development of an environment that is able to support the processes defined. This infrastructure is to be applied to ODE Project, a project that aims to develop the software engineering environment ODE (Ontology-based software Development Environment) as a free software, giving rise to the Free ODE Project. ODE Project aims to develop a Process Centered Software Development Environment and it is the main project in progress in the Software Engineering Laboratory of the Federal University of Espírito Santo (LabES/UFES).

<p>Paralelan i nezavisan rad vi&scaron;e projektanata na različitim modulima (podsistemima) nekog informacionog sistema, identifikovanim saglasno početnoj funkcionalnoj dekompoziciji realnog sistema, nužno dovodi do međusobno nekonzistentnih re&scaron;enja &scaron;ema modula baze podataka. The thesis considers the problems concerning automatic detection of collisions, that can appear during the simultaneous design of different db module schemas, and integration of db module schemas into the unique information system db schema.</p><p>All possible types of db module schema collisions have been identified. Necessary and sufficient condition of strong and intensional db module schema compatibility has been formu-lated and proved. It has enabled to formalize the process of&nbsp;db module schema strong and intensional compatibility checking and to construct the appropriate algorithms. The integration process of the unique (strong covering) db schema, on the basis of compatible db module schemas, is formalized, as well. The methodology of applying the algorithms for compatibility checking and unique db schema integration is also presented.</p>
