The measurement of the head circunference (HC) is of great importance from birth to young adult, especially during the first year of life when the head grows faster. Our objective was to investigate whether there was difference in HC of newborns (RNs) of mothers attended in public and private maternity hospitals. This is a cross-sectional study conducted at the Maternidade Escola Januario Cicco (MEJC), at the UFRN and two private hospitals (HP) from December 2008 to December 2009. Data analysis was performed using the statistical programs SPSS 17.0 and R 2.11.1, ANOVA and post-hoc analysis using the Tukey test, the curves for HC by GI, stratified by type of delivery, gender and were constructed using the LMS method. The study sample consisted of 2,847 newborns, from 34 to 42 weeks of gestational age (GI), of which 2,150 were born in the MEJC and 692 were born in PH. In the two groups of RNs the differences between the average PCs, by GI, according to gender, health system and type of delivery were analyzed. The newly created curves of the HC were validated in separate samples, for all ages combined, for both genders, and public and private systems, mean and CIs were calculated for each GI. In the analysis of the general sample, for the gender, the mean HC in the female gender was 34.24 and the male HD was 34.91 cm (p <0.001). Regarding health systems, in the public system the mean HD was 34.49 cm, while in the private system it reached 34.90 cm (p <0.001). Regarding the type of delivery, the mean HC of the vaginal birth RNs was 34.12 cm, the cesarean section was 34.81 cm (p <0.001). The results showed that the mean HD of the RNs of the HPs presented a HC greater than the RNs evaluated in the MEJC in all the parameters we surveyed. Statistically validated curves and charts can be used in regions with socioeconomic conditions similar to ours. This study presented a multidisciplinary profile with contribution of professionals from several areas of scientific knowledge, neonatologist, neuro child, nurse, statistician, following the precepts of the Graduate Program in Health Sciences of UFRN.

Gauthier-Daigneault, Catherine 12 1900 (has links)
Even though workplaces have undergone several transformations in recent decades, employers are constantly looking for flexibility, which has particularly impacted employment status and working time. These changes had the effect of raising the issue of work/life balance (WLB) at the heart of discussions. Although there has been progress in the labor market regarding WLB in recent years, some issues remain. The main one being the incompatibility between the professional and family spheres which can have negative repercussions. This research will examine the effects of union presence on access to WLB measures and their perceived effectiveness by human resources professionals. This quantitative study is based on data collected by Émilie Genin and Mélanie Laroche, professors at the School of Industrial Relations of the University of Montreal between 2017 and 2018. The data was collected in partnership with the Ordre des conseillers en ressources humaines et relations industrielles agréés du Québec (CRHA). Our data is constituted by a sampling of 249 respondents. The research hypotheses were tested using data collected from human resources or industrial relations professionals, members of the Ordre des CRHA du Québec. In this research, we sought to understand whether unionization has an effect on the number of WLB measures offered in the workplace and whether unionization has a moderating effect on the relationship between WLB measures and their perceived effectiveness. Our model allows us to make various findings. Research results show that unionization has no effect on the number of WLB measures offered in organizations. A positive relationship was also observed between the number of WLB measures and their perceived effectiveness by human resources professionals. Finally, our results show that unionization does not have a moderating relationship on the presence of WLB measures and their perceived effectiveness. We aimed to contribute to the literature by focusing on the effect of union presence on access to WLB measures and their perceived effectiveness. While little research specifically examines these elements, our study allows for reflection on the impact of union presence on the WLB. This study also serves as a reference for all employers, unions and governments who wish to shed some light on the issue of WLB.

An Analysis Of The Performance Of Investment Companies: Evidence From The Istanbul Stock Exchange

Sultanov, Rustam 01 May 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this master&rsquo / s thesis is to evaluate the performance of investment companies, namely Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) and Closed-End Funds (CEFs) in Turkey. In this study, three different models are used to evaluate the risk adjusted performances of Turkish investment companies. These models are: 1) the single-factor CAPM / 2) the Fama-French three-factor model / and 3) the Carhart&rsquo / s four factor model. The results of this study indicate that for the sample period from January 1997 to December 2009, Turkish REITs and Turkish CEFs neither overperform nor underperform the overall market. Intercepts in almost all models are statistically significantly not different from zero, implying that both REITs and CEFs are earning their expected returns. The results are robust to different models used in this study. Among employed models, the Fama-French three-factor model is the best in explaining the returns on both REITs and CEFs. In general, coefficients of the size and the book-to-market equity risk factors are significant and positive. The explanatory power of the regressions does not improve with the Carhart&rsquo / s four-factor model, since momentum factors have statistically insignificant coefficients in all regressions. Findings of this study have an important implication for the efficiency of the Istanbul Stock Exchange. The inability of professional money managers to beat the overall market could be taken as an evidence in favor of the ISE being either semi-strong or strong form efficient. On the other hand, lack of skills on the part of Turkish fund managers might be another explanation for their inability to surpass the performance of the overall market.

Flu on the Front: the Effects of the Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919 on the 15th Reserve and 46th Infantry Battalions, Canadian Expeditionary Force

Davis, Renee 19 May 2020 (has links)
This study is an examination of the effects of the first two waves of the Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919 on the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Europe during the final months of the First World War. Using a case-study approach, the study analyzes the experiences of the 15th Canadian Reserve Battalion (Saskatchewan) in England and the 46th Canadian Infantry Battalion (South Saskatchewan) in France from April to 11 November 1918. While the comparison of these two battalions’ experiences is useful to see the how the Canadian Army Medical Corps reacted and responded to the outbreak of pandemic influenza in both locations, it also highlights the impact that the pandemic had on the reinforcement stream in 1918, and demonstrates the greater cost of conscription during the final months of the war. This thesis argues that that the Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919 affected the Canadian Expeditionary Force’s Hundred Days Campaign in a way that, until now, has not been recognized. Additionally, it argues that the 15th Reserve Battalion was not to blame for bringing pandemic influenza to Bramshott Camp in the fall of 1918, and that the Canadian Army Medical Corps reacted to the outbreak as effectively as possible. Finally, it highlights the experiences of men from Saskatchewan and recounts the stories of soldiers who died of pandemic influenza.

Role of activator protein-1 (AP-1) family in RSV-transformed chicken embryonic fibroblasts (CEF)

Wang, Lizhen 05 1900 (has links)
<p> Proper gene expression programs cellular activities, while aberrant manipulation of transcription factors often leads to devastating consequences, such as cancer or cell death. The transcription factor family activator protein-1 (AP-1) plays an important role in many cellular activities including cell transformation, proliferation and survival (Shaulian and Karin 2002). However, little has been done to obtain a global view of the role of individual AP-1 members and how they cooperate in many cellular activities. We have discovered that blocking the AP-1 pathway by a c-Jun dominant negative mutant, TAM67, induced cell death in RSV-transformed primary chicken embryo fibroblasts (CEF), suggesting that AP-1 activity is vital for cell survival upon v-Src transformation. In addition, accumulation of cytoplasmic vesicles was observed in the cytoplasm of a proportion of RSV-transformed CEF expressing TAM67. Oil-red staining of these vesicles indicated the presence of lipid droplets in these cells, suggesting that the inhibition of AP-1 promotes the adipogenic conversion of v-Src transformed CEF. To understand the role of individual members of the AP-1 family, a retroviral-based shRNA expressing system was designed to stably downregulate individual AP-1 members. This retroviral-based RNAi system provided sustained gene downregulation of AP-1 family members. Reduction of the c-Jun protein level by shRNA induced senescence in normal CEF, while it modestly downregulated AP-1 activity in RSV -transformed CEF indicating that c-Jun is not the main component of the AP-1 complex in RSV-transformed CEF. Inhibition of JunD expression induced apoptosis and was deleterious to both normal and RSV-transformed CEF, suggesting that JunD is crucial for the survival of CEF. Transient express10n reporter-assays also showed that loss-of-function of JunD by shRNA dramatically repressed AP-1 activity. Hence JunD is the main component of the AP-1 complex that regulates the survival of CEF. Furthermore, we determined that loss of JunD expression resulted in an elevated level of tumour suppressor p53. Co-inhibition of p53 and JunD restored the transforming ability of v-Src transformed CEF, as indicated by foci formation in soft agar assays. Hence, repression of p53 induction was able to bypass the death signal released as a result of AP-1 inhibition in v-Src transformed CEF. Downregulation of Fra-2 (Fos-related antigen 2) level by shRNA did not affect the proliferation of normal CEF. However, RSV -transformed CEFs expressing fra -2 shRNA were transformation-defective with the presence of multiple vesicles in cytoplasm. Oil-red staining of these vesicles indicated the presence of lipid droplets, which resembles the effect of T AM67 in RSV -transformed CEF indicating that Fra-2 blocks differentiation. These findings help us to understand the role of individual members of the AP-1 transcription factor family in normal and RSV -transformed CEF. Importantly, global gene profiling of v-Src transformed CEF expressing shRNA for individual AP-1 members will improve our knowledge of the transformation process. Functional characterization of the cascade will rely on the use of retroviral-based shRNA expressing system as described above. </p> / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Granskning och optimering av data- och IP-telefoninätverk

Eriksson, Jhonny, Karlsson, Joel January 2010 (has links)
<p>The company Västra Mälardalens Kommunalförbund, VMKF, wishes to revise and optimize their present data and IP-telephony network as of today consists of the three municipalities Köping, Arboga and Kungsör. As a municipal corporation, they seek consultation regarding internal as well as external review and investigation of the main structure of the network, its functionality and safety. By today’s increasing demands of Internet accessibility, availability of services and security far more extends the requirement of a complete network design. The foundation of networking rests on the balance between each of these necessities. Therefore, it is of grave importance to optimize a network design, use of hardware and to minimize the administrative overhead. In particular, when the municipality is short of resources and time means money. By letting an impartial investigation of the network act as a starting point it was established that several improvement could be applied. Among these a reconstructed and improved network topology that includes subjects as routing, switching, safety and security, quality of service and technical administrative overhead and the implementation of a real time monitoring of network bandwidth consumption.</p> / <p>Företaget Västra Mälardalens Kommunalförbund, VMKF, har önskemål om att granska och optimera deras befintliga data- och IP-telefoninätverk som i dagsläget spänner över de tre kommunerna Köping, Arboga och Kungsör.

Investment Companies’ Discount Fluctuation on the Swedish Market : A statistical analysis regarding different micro-   and macroeconomic factors influence on Swedish closed-end funds’ discount

Cau Nicklasson, Ronnie, Hansson, Simon January 2013 (has links)
Closed-end funds’ (CEF) discount and discount fluctuations have been puzzling researchers for decades. Up to date, there are no multidimensional or cross-sectional variables that have been proved to influence CEFs simultaneously. Fact is that, earlier research and theories on the subject are contradictious and several suggestions on the origin of the CEF’s discount and its fluctuations have been proposed. To mention a few, investor sentiments, taxation issues, dividend policies, agency costs and agency problems are considered to influence these discounts. The purpose of this report is to examine the relationship between micro- and macroeconomic variables fluctuations, and how these can explain the discount fluctuation of the Swedish CEFs. This report focuses upon the CEFs traded at NASDAQ OMX Stockholm, which have been selected through a comprehensive multistage selection process. 10 CEFs were selected. Monthly data for calculating micro- and macroeconomic variables was collected for the period March 2003 – February 2013, which resulted in approximately 1 200 observations. OLS regression analysis, Fixed- and Random Effect Models and Hausman tests were conducted. The findings conclude that some of this report’s chosen micro- and macro variables influence on the Swedish CEFs’ discount fluctuation, although these findings are conditioned. The CEFs’ individual characteristics or traits result in a significant impact on the fluctuation of CEFs’ discount. Hence, only by controlling these characteristics, multidimensional or cross-sectional micro- and macroeconomic variables can be proved to affect the CEFs’ discount fluctuation.
