Cubillos Montecino, Mar?a Susana January 2009 (has links)

Though, they cannot also be considered as fixed categories and given by culture. It is precisely within the discursive and cultural character of the gender technologies that such technologies are never considered ready, but always in construction within culture. Gender technologies have direct relation to the sexual representation of sexualities and to what Foucault (2012a) calls mechanism of sexuality, as its ramifications (the regulation of the bodies and the interpellation, for example), and make the subversion of the identity possible. For the keeping of such technologies, the reiteration within culture and discourse is constantly necessary, and for that the theory of gender performativity, as postulated by Butler (2015a) accounts for the complex process of ?maintaining the gender? of a certain individual. Such process consists of a series of cultural and discursive acts performed, up to a certain point, intentionally, by the subject as a product of gender technologies. These acts are regulated by what Althusser (1980) names ?ideological State apparatuses? and they seem to be in consensus with the current norm. To Rich (2010) this norm is called heteronormativity and is always compulsory, its work is to regulate bodies, identities and genders, however this regulation collects its price by the obliteration of certain existences. This paper proposes a queer reading of The first bad man, a novel by the north-american writer Miranda July, to discuss the way the character Cheryl Glickman?s gender is constructed and deconstructed along the narrative and if the novel contemplates only the binary expressions of gender (male and female), or if July sees other gender identities, although marginal, possible.

These participants were both women in situations of violence, sheltered in the institution, and its multidisciplinar team of professionals, called "caregivers". The writing is based on being able to make possible the reflection and the approach of questions related to gender in our reality, historically, socially and culturally ruled by the production and reproduction of inequities of power, as well as by mechanisms of women?s oppression. Objective: To discuss perceptions about violence and gender relations from the perspectives of women victims of violence and their caregivers, as well as to address data that characterize the shelter functioning, as part of the serious social problem constituted by the different forms of violence against women in our country. Method: Three studies were carried out to compose this thesis, all conceived in a transverse descriptive observational design, and within a qualitative-descriptive lineation scope. The first one was elaborated from individual interviews with women who were victims of violence, based on the precepts of the Narrative Interview, and analyzed according to the assumptions of the Discourse Analysis. The second study was based on interviews with caregivers, both individually and in a thinking-based group. In order to do so, the assumptions of the Semi- Structured Interview were adopted in order to guide the collection process more specificially, and the data were again treated from the Discourse Analysis method. Finally, the third study is characterized by a data survey based on the attendances provided by the shelter-house between 2006 and 2013, discussing how they were characterized after the implementation of 11.340/06 Law, better known as "Maria da Penha Law". Results: It was possible, through the studies carried out, to discuss how perceptions about violence and gender relations, both on women in situations of violence and on their caregivers, can represent the gender signification modes that historically command our society, as well as to consider the work of shelterhouses as essential elements for a social support network aimed at disrupting and preventing gender-based violence.

The aim was to understand the identity of Jewish women over three generations, using life history narratives of the participants to observe factors, within their lives cycle, which made these women captive of norms and roles; in three families inserted in the Brazilian culture and three other inserted in the Australian culture. This thesis is composed by four studies. The first one was an essay that aimed to present arguments against and in favor of Jewish women fighting for the same rights as Jewish men. The second study was a systematic review of the literature about Jewish women, gender and feminism, and presented studies found in a research made in the Sydney University?s library database. The third one was qualitative empiric study which worked with the interpretations of the women?s social reality, highlighting the meaning or the phenomenon experienced by them and the importance of social and historic contexts; individual interviews where women told narratives of their life?s sorties were made with nine Jewish women in the south of Brazil, aiming to investigate and understand the construction of their speeches in light of the theory of the conscious space, as well as gender, feminist and systemic theories; the discourse analysis was used searching for the meaning of the speeches. The fourth study was made while I was made during my exchange semester, in Australia. It is a reproduction of the third study, but with nine women from a different culture, Australian, in a country with a similar territorial size and Jewish population (in numbers) as Brazil. Results: It was identified, through the analysis of interviews, that the third generation women benefit from more rights than their grandmas, who encountered more barriers in terms or work and personal life, while second generation women represent a transition of changes acquired in terms of public and private space, having more freedom to make choices, even if that is to maintain old traditions, in both Brazil and Australia. The importance of this research was to give space to Jewish women, who are kept in disadvantage not only because of anti-Semitism, but also within their own religion and culture, due to the influence for the patriarchy in Judaism, where, in orthodox community, Jewish men still hold more power and subjugate the women; while more liberal Jewish females exercise citizenship with more equality and have the freedom to follow their wished with less restrictions and barriers.

As a bridge between these areas of knowledge, critical criminology was used, which, unlike traditional criminology, will value in the stories of these women deprived of their freedom, their struggle efforts, confrontations, the quest to survive, recognizing what experiences brought them to prison and the reason for more rigorous punishments, because they were women, selected by their social class, and also subjected to physical and psychological "punishments", with the approval of the Judiciary, within the penitentiary. This is a qualitative study, carried out at the Madre Peletier Women's Penitentiary in Porto Alegre, using as research techniques semi-structured interviews with women in situation of restriction of freedom, interviews with the female agents responsible for maintaining them in prision, participative observation of prison dynamics, and document analysis, which had as sources the national and international legislation, as well as the official speeches contained in documents, decrees and resolutions of the punitive system. The research reveals the perverse reality experienced by women who have been re-confined, which imposes the need to deconstruct these two systems - criminal and penitentiary - that carry the traditional marks of criminal selection and arbitrariness, as well as affronting international treaties against torture and also those of human rights guarantees. In this perspective, the women participating in the study are seen in their specificities and peculiarities, considering economic, structural, social and cultural aspects of their life experiences that put them in a cycle of prisons, before, during and after going through concrete situations of incarceration , They are prisoners, because they are poverty, suffering all the violence of this situation. The study concludes that re-confined women are born imprisoned by their own social vulnerability and its consequences, due to their conflicting family relationships, the confrontation of domestic violence, the experience of exclusion within the region where they reside, making them return, even when they are released by the prison system, to this other type of prison, which is the precarious conditions of their social lives, fraught with gender oppression.

PUCRS, had the goal to evaluate the grades of prejudice against sexual and gender diversity within 28 public schools of 12 cities located in 4 Brazilian states. In this paper, it were considered the manners which prejudice is expressed by teachers, staff and students, and the form that the prejudice is shown in relation to the social demographics variables researched in those three categories of subjects. The sample was based on 413 teachers, 97 employees and 1.829 high school students that answered a selfexplanatory questionnaire with social demographic data, duly reviewed by the Prejudice against Sexual and Gender Diversity scales. The questionnaire was composed by 16 items that inquired about prejudice against sexual and gender diversity, and the Bogardus scale of social distance adapted to investigated the relation among gays, lesbian, travesties and transexuals. Individuals that declared to be religious or followers of the evangelic religion in the three groups of study presented a higher rate of prejudice than the other variables. The participation in any training, class or course related to gender, sexuality or sexual diversity decreases the prejudice variable in the three groups of study. Individuals that affirmed to have homosexual (gays and lesbians) friends, relatives or acquaintances in the groups of teachers and students presented a lower level of prejudice compared to the ones that declared to not have relationship with people with such characteristics. To assist individuals that are part of Brazilian education institutions to think about multiple sexual and gender orientations is the first step to propose institutional, pedagogical and methodological changes in schools. Campaigns and political actions that foster the problem of the prejudice, their risks and damages for current and future generations is also fundamental for the search of a more equal society in relation to the individual rights and obligations.

For this to happen, two studies were carried out, a theoretical article and an empirical article. In the first article entitled "Feminization of involuntary migration in Brazil: intersections of gender, race / ethnicity and class", a critical review of the studies published on the issue of female migration in Brazil was carried out. The work was analyzed through the intersectional perspective, which includes different forms of agency and discrimination, from the interaction between different modes of subordination, such as issues of gender, race / ethnicity, class. From this study was verified, in spite of increasing the number of research on the subject, few take into consideration of markers according to the intersectional way. In the second article entitled "Trajectory of migration of Haitian women in Porto Alegre: a qualitative study", a panorama is outlined about the feminization of migration, especially Haitian immigration. In order to make a discussion with the current theory on migrations, the analyzes of interviews with Haitian women are carried out. Based on these analyzes, it is sought to understand how the migration trajectory of these women is, what has been found of similarities and differences with what has been published about migration of Haitian women. Some issues, such as language, family and work, have been highlighted and deepened. In their speeches it was observed how being Haitian is linked to the experience of migration. It has also been seen that their trajectories are marked by protagonism when deciding to migrate alone to other countries. Even in the cases of accompanied migration there are passages in which the protagonism 10 of the immigrants is also perceived. As one of the pioneering studies in our context, the results discussed here provide indications that can be explored in future studies, which can further investigate the concepts explored here with other migratory groups in other contexts. Thus, the findings of this research offer a still limited and limited panorama of the reality of Haitian women in Porto Alegre, but which can serve as a support for thinking about public policies and interventions aimed at raising the awareness of the Brazilian population about this emerging issue, possibilities for the reception and promotion of human rights for the immigrant and refugee population. / A presente disserta??o visa abordar a recente imigra??o haitiana no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, explorando o significado do fen?meno migrat?rio para mulheres haitianas.

In this study, we used the Affective and Emotional Composite Temperament Scale (AFECTS) to assess such relationship. Data from 16.571 (mean age = 29.1 ? 6.3 yrs, 69.4% females) subjects was collected through the Internet, in Brazil, using the AFECTS. Sexual orientation groups were named: heterosexuals, heterosexual with homosexual experience, bisexuals with preference for the opposite sex, bisexuals with no preference, bisexual with preference for the same sex and homosexuals. Regarding affective temperaments, male cyclothymics and dysphorics had the lowest percentage of people with heterosexual orientation and the highest percentages of people with bisexual and homosexual orientation, the opposite profile was observed in hyperthymic and euthymic types. Among females, the volatile, cyclothymic, apathetic, disinhibited and euphoric types were less often observed in people with ?pure? heterosexual orientation and more often in people with bisexual orientation. In men only, homosexuality was more common among the depressive, cyclothymic and dysphorics temperaments. Emotional trait analysis showed that heterosexual subjects differed statistically from all other groups by having higher scores of coping and stability and lower scores of sensitivity and desire. Overall, the largest differences compared to ?pure? heterosexuals were observed in people with bisexual orientation with no gender preference in females and people with bisexual orientation with opposite gender preference in males. Subjects with heterosexual orientation who have had homosexual experience and those with homosexual orientation presented intermediate scores.
