Prototypes of Meredithian characters

Herseth, Esther N. 01 January 1938 (has links) (PDF)
"If a man's work is to be of value the best of him must be in it," wrote George Meredith to Mrs. J. B. Gilman of Concord, Massachusetts. To this credo he subscribed during this long career as a writer. The rare gifts of a richly endowed nature he brought to his work, for he was a philosopher, a poet, a humorist, and a subtle psychologist. The characters he created in his novels add much to his merit as a writer and it is with the delineation of certain of these characters and their prototypes in actual life, that I propose to deal.

Har källkritik inom journalistik försvunnit? : En kvalitativ tematisk analys på fyra olika publikationer om musikduon Hooja

Lemberg, Emelie, Olsson Reise, Lina January 2023 (has links)
The popular music duo known as Hooja and DJ Mårdhund was during 2023 known by most of the Swedish population. They won prizes, did interviews and even had their own documentary by the Swedish public service SVT. This was all achieved while the duo was anonymous, only showing themselves with masks and layers of clothes as well as thick northern accents. However, on the 6th of July 2023, their true identities were revealed as well as where they live and how much money they make, in an article written by the Swedishnewspaper Aftonbladet. Before the reveal they had such a huge medial platform where they could express themselves however they wanted but with the article by Aftonbladet it was also revealed that everything they said in the interviews wan´t true. This raised the question, har source criticism in journalism disappeared? Journalism has such a power in society that it is highly important that the information shared is truthful. Without source criticism there is no telling of what is true and what's made up and the power is instead moved from trusted journalistic newsrooms to everyday people who want a place in the paper. The purpose of this study is to in depth analyze how journalistic medias used framing and have portrayed the duo before their identities were revealed. This has been done using a qualitative thematic analysis on four different publications (two of each) by the Swedish public service Sveriges radio and Aftonbladet. The themes found during the analysis were“Characters”, “Source criticism”, “Truthfulness” and “Behind the masks”. The result showed that at least two of the articles gravely lacked source criticism and that the music duo pretty much had free rain to portray themselves however they wanted. Only one of the articles contained a high level of criticism. In the discussion the theories of uses and gratification and framing theory was used to show how media has used the fame of Hooja and how Hooja has used media platforms as a way to market themselves.

Att uttrycka goda och onda spelkaraktärer genom ljuddesign

Rönnqvist, David, Anderlind, Oscar January 2023 (has links)
Graphic and musical theories regarding good and evil have been interpreted and translated to theories suited for sound design. This was done in order to examine if a character's good and evil traits can be expressed solely through sound design as its only narrative device. Through research and interviews held with professional sound designers, an audio-visual prototype was created to test these theories in practice. This article finds that, while these theories can be translated to sound design, this narrative tool is not the most effective in conveying good and evil, and it is still more effectful to convey this through graphic and musical theories. This is a relatively unexplored area of sound design and this article serves to establish some of the first steps by exploring the two extremes of good and evil traits.

Agency and Tradition : Women in 1920s China through the Lens of Film

Rojrung, Natacha January 2023 (has links)
The aim of this study is an attempt to provide examples of how women’s roles have been portrayed in Chinese film made in modern time about women in the 1920s through examination and analysis of the film Raise the Red Lantern《大红灯笼高高挂》by Zhang Yimo by using agency theory. The study delves into the portrayal of female characters' actions within traditional marriage and family dynamics as depicted in the film. Through the method of inductive thematic analysis, the research identifies categories, including rivalry, pregnancy, illicit affairs, and oppressive behaviour through punishment and violence. The study also addresses the expression of agency by female characters, identifying elements of agency within the constraints of the patriarchal system. The projective element, involving envisioning potential future events, and the practical-evaluative element, making judgments in response to changing situations, are recognized. However, the study concludes that the agency expressed by female characters primarily focuses on improving individual positions within the system rather than challenging the system itself.
