Cette étude traite des changements dans la façon de percevoir la statue, de la statuette au colosse, et des bouleversements dans les fonctions que les anciens leur attribuaient aux IVe et Ve siècles ap. J.-C., une période de mutation religieuse, sociale et politique. La réflexion s'appuie sur les sources archéologiques, littéraires, périodiques et épigraphiques afin de proposer une lecture croisée, mêlant des domaines que les traditions académiques divisent entre histoire et histoire de l'art. Leur analyse permet d'étudier l'approche nouvelle des statues, puis les fonctions de telles images dans la société de la fin de l'Antiquité, et enfin le traitement plastique singulier des images en ronde-bosse à cette époque. Ces images qui ont hanté l'univers des Anciens ont été modelées au contact de la société pour en devenir l'expression. Cette étude des statues permet donc une approche plus large qui touche à la fois les mentalités mais aussi les cadres politiques et religieux d'une société romaine tardive en mutation. / The current study concerned the ancients' changing perception of the statue and its associated qualities during the enormous religious, political, and social upheavals of the 4th and 5th century A.D., focusing on the most clearly documented Western part of the Empire, particularly Africa, Italy and Gaul. The study draws on archeological, literary, legal and epigraphic sources more traditionally treated separately as belonging to either history or history of art. This multi disciplinary analysis casts new light on our understanding of statues, and the function of such images at the end of Antiquity as well as the unique plastic use of such images in sculpture in the round of the period. The images, which haunted the universe of the Ancients, were a product of its civilization in order to become the expression of it. This study thus takes an approach which includes social attitudes within the political and religious framework of a late Roman civilization in transition

La mise en évidence, dans les traditions classique et chrétienne, d’un principe dominant de dysfonctionnement et d’infériorité du corps féminin, aboutit au constat d’une stabilité notable dans les thèmes, les images et les procédés littéraires utilisés dans les poèmes figurant ce dernier, depuis la période classique jusqu’à la latinité tardive. Qu’il s’agisse de la puella, de la sponsa ou de la uirgo, le corps de la femme est le support d’un discours le plus souvent édifiant, où dominent les canons traditionnels de la beauté, associés aux vertus de fides, pietas et pudor. Pour autant, on observe un infléchissement remarquable dans la tonalité d’ensemble du discours poétique tardif sur le corps féminin : du fait, notamment, de la prédominance progressive des textes chrétiens, celui-ci bénéficie peu à peu des implications du mystère de l’Incarnation, jusqu’à devenir, nonobstant le discours de certains Pères, le paradigme de la glorification de la chair, permise par le sacrifice du Christ et chantée, grâce à toutes les ressources d’un art de la profusion, par les poètes. / A striking constancy in the use of themes, images and literary techniques in poems spanning from the Classical to the late Latin periods emerges once a prevailing principle in the Classical and Christian traditions is brought to the fore. According to this principle as revealed by these poems the female body is both dysfunctional and inferior. Whether it be the puella, the sponsa or the uirgo, the female body serves as the medium for an oft edifying discourse dominated by the traditional canons of beauty together with the virtues fides, pietas and pudor. It is nevertheless possible to underscore a notable shift in the tone of the late poetic discourse taken as a whole with respect to the female body : little by little the latter reaps the benefits from the growing influence of Christian texts and, in particular, from the implications of the mystery of Incarnation, to become the paradigm of the glorification of the flesh allowed by the sacrifice of Christ – this, notwithstanding the discourse of certain Fathers – and sung by the poets thanks to the resources afforded by a generous art form.

La réappropriation de l’eschatologie judéo-chrétienne par les doctrinaires politiques du XIXe siècle est un topos de l’histoire des idées ; le soubassement religieux de l’idéologie démocratique du XXe siècle, quoique moins éclatant, est tout aussi réel. Quant à l’art, ouvrant dans un monde ultra-territorialisé le champ de l’extraterritorialité par excellence, il constitue peut-être la dernière altérité du discours rationnel positiviste. La théorie spéculative de l’Art a montré en quoi la littérature se rapproche plus d’un logos que d’une tekhnè, et l’écrivain de la figure du messager plutôt que de celle de l’artisan. En outre, dans sa tentation des origines, l’inspiration artistique appelle la surenchère : de mot en mot, on en vient au Verbe, et d’idée en idée au Saint-Esprit. Qu’il le transpose ou le critique, l’illustre ou le rejette, le livre a toujours entretenu des rapports étroits au Livre — et il y a là plus qu’une simple homothétie médiologique, où tout incipit vaudrait genèse. Parmi les pratiques actuelles de transplantation de l’héritage chrétien dans le roman, rares sont les ambitions architectoniques, les prolongements majestueux ; plus fréquents sont les greffons ou les scories. Fragments d’ensembles qui n’existent plus. Il s’agira donc ici de mettre en lumière ces nouvelles insertions du sacré dans l’univers profane de la littérature et d’en étudier la nature singulière en lien avec l’actuelle société française. Et de démontrer qu’entre modèle descriptif, recours spéculatif et détour narratif, le christianisme, plus qu’un simple référent parmi d’autres, demeure, en dépit d'une sécularisation de la société, l’un des horizons privilégiés de la création romanesque française d’aujourd’hui. / The taking back of the Judeo-Christian eschatology by political theorists of the nineteenth century is a topos of the history of ideas. Though it is less obvious, the religious foundation of the democratic ideology of the twentieth century is just as real. As for art, since it is perhaps the last otherness of positivist rational discourse, it leads, in an overterritorialized world, to the extraterritorial field par excellence. The speculative theory of Art showed how literature is much more a logos than a tekhnè, and how the writer is closer to the figure of the messenger than to that of the craftsman. Moreover, in its temptation of origins, artistic inspiration calls for upmanship: word by word, we come to the Word, and from idea to idea to the Holy Spirit. Shall it transpose or criticize it, illustrate or reject it, the book has always had close relations to the Bible – and those relations are much deeper than an simple mediological homothety, where every beginning would count as a genesis. Among the current practices of transplantation of the Christian heritage in the novel, few are architectural ambitions or big extensions; most common are grafts or slags. Fragments of bigger schemes that no longer exist. Our aim is to highlight the new insertions of the sacred in the profane world of literature and to study its unique nature in connection with the current French society. And to demonstrate that between descriptive models, speculative crutches and narrative detours, Christianity, more than a mere referent among others, remains, in spite of society’s secularization, one of the privileged backgrounds of French fictional creation today.

Cette recherche s'intéresse à la pratique du théâtre en milieu ecclésial. Mon expérience personnelle dans le domaine a fait émerger plusieurs interrogations. Ainsi, lorsque j'ai investigué sur ce sujet, j'ai découvert que la fusion des arts et de la foi soulevait d'épineuses problématiques, en particulier, du point de vue du théologien qui développe une réflexion sur l'art. En pratique, j'ai pu constater que l'art dramatique est très peu développé en Église alors qu'il pourrait ouvrir un espace de dialogue avec la société. Il pourrait contribuer au partage de la foi chrétienne. Souvent, la maîtrise artistique et la profondeur spirituelle font défaut aux spectacles produits. Ces observations ont fait naître des questionnements qui me conduisent à m'interroger sur les facteurs qui pourraient expliquer le sous-développement de cette pratique du théâtre en Église. Quelques communautés évangéliques situées dans le Grand Montréal constitueront notre terrain d'investigation. On interrogera des pasteurs et des artistes chrétiens pour comprendre comment cette pratique du théâtre est envisagée et mise en œuvre dans leur milieu. On cherchera également à recenser les obstacles à cette pratique corrélée à la vocation spirituelle d'un artiste qui désire partager sa foi. Je préciserais simplement que le type de théâtre que je chercherai à questionner se situera dans cette liberté du chrétien-artiste, qui laissera l'espace de son art ouvert à la transcendance qui l'habite ; tout en laissant libre, le public qui reçoit l'œuvre. Le théâtre n'est pas réduit à un instrument au sens purement utilitaire. Il n'est pas un support d'idées que l'on cherche à imposer à l'esprit d'individus. Il serait davantage un instrument artistique qui emprunte d'autres voies pour exprimer ce qui anime l'artiste. Le théâtre devient alors lieu de partage, de discussion et de rencontre. La méthodologie employée pour cette étude sera celle de la théologie pratique. / This research focuses on the practice of theater in church settings. My personal experience in this area has raised several questions. When I investigated this subject, I discovered that the fusion of arts and faith raised thorny issues, especially from the point of view of the theologian who develops a reflection on art. In practice, I have found that the dramatic arts are very underdeveloped in the Church, even though they could provide a space for dialogue with society. It could contribute to sharing the Christian faith. Often the artistic mastery and spiritual depth are lacking in the shows produced. These observations have given rise to questions that lead me to wonder about the factors that could explain the underdevelopment of this practice of theater in the Church. A few evangelical communities located in the Greater Montreal area will constitute our field of investigation. We will interview pastors and Christian artists in order to understand how this practice of theater is envisaged and implemented in their environment. We will also try to identify the obstacles to this practice that are correlated to the spiritual vocation of an artist who wishes to share his faith. I would simply specify that the type of theater that I will seek to question will be situated in this freedom of the Christian-artist, who will leave his art open to the transcendence that inhabits him; while leaving free, the public who receives the work. The theater is not reduced to an instrument in a purely utilitarian sense. It is not a support of ideas that one seeks to impose on the spirit of individuals. It would be more an artistic instrument that takes other ways to express what animates the artist. The theater then becomes a place of sharing, discussion and encounter. The methodology used for this study will be that of practical theology.
