In this work we present the basic theoretical concepts of the description of the nucleon spin structure. The theoretical background of two processes of interest - Semi-inclusive DIS and Drell-Yan - in the terms of Transverse Momentum De- pendent Parton distribution Functions is presented. The COMPASS experiment and particularly its unique polarised target are described in detail. Several target related measurements are presented. The express analysis and detector efficien- cies analysis are presented as examples of important hardware related analysis. Finally two measurements of Transverse Spin Asymmetries are presented. The first measurement is the measurement of the Transverse Spin Asymmetries in J/ψ production in the Semi-inclusive DIS on polarised protons. The second mea- surement is the measurement of Transverse Spin Asymmetries in J/ψ in the π− p polarised Drell-Yan data. 1

Loneliness During COVID-19 and its Association with Eating Habits and 24-Hour Movement Behaviours in a Sample of Canadian Adolescents

Background: Loneliness, a feeling of distress, has aggravated due to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns and reduced social interactions. The objective of this study was to explore whether increased loneliness due to the COVID-19 pandemic was associated with various eating and activity behaviours in adolescence, a critical period for the development of lasting lifestyle habits. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we used self-reported data from 43,588 and 40,521 Canadian adolescents aged 12-19 years (collected between November 2020 and June 2021) for eating habits and the 24-hour movement behaviours, respectively. Binary and multinomial logistic regression were used to predict the odds of various lifestyle behaviours among adolescents with increased loneliness due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: We found higher odds of skipping breakfast [boys: OR 1.41 (95% CI: 1.33, 1.50), girls: OR 1.64 (95% CI: 1.56, 1.74)], fast food consumption [1-2 days in the past week: girls - OR: 1.14 (95% CI: 1.08, 1.21); ≥3 days in the past week: boys - 1.12 (95% CI: 1.02, 1.24), girls - OR: 1.42 (95% CI: 1.29, 1.57)], not meeting screen time [boys: OR 1.43 (95% CI: 1.24, 1.66), girls: OR 1.72 (95% CI: 1.54, 1.92)], and sleep duration guidelines [boys: OR 1.38 (95% CI: 1.28, 1.48), girls: OR 1.36 (95% CI: 1.27, 1.45)] among adolescents that reported increased loneliness due to the pandemic (versus those in the decreased/stayed the same loneliness group). Conclusion: Future longitudinal studies in adolescents are needed to confirm the directionality of these associations. It is important to raise awareness of these findings among public health practitioners, policymakers, physicians, schools and parents to promote healthier eating habits and increase adherence to the 24-hour movement behaviours. Recovery efforts post-pandemic are needed to reduce loneliness levels to support adolescent social health and establish healthy behavioural habits across the lifespan.

The Radio Access Network (RAN) plays a vital role in enabling mobile network connectivity using radio waves. Gaining a comprehensive understanding of RAN applications is crucial, and trace analysis provides valuable insights into their operations. Modern RAN applications can be deployed on different platforms and this can lead to the generation of different trace formats, which complicates the analysis process. Trace analysis and visualization tools, such as Trace Compass, can be used to ease the process, but for each new trace format the user often needs to create new code and visualizations. This is needed also when different trace formats generated by the same application contain similar information. To overcome this limitation, this thesis introduces an innovative approach to generalize the interpretation of traces, enabling to reuse existing analysis and visualization independently of the trace format. Moreover, a Domain Specific Language (DSL) is introduced to simplify the trace analysis procedure. The proposed thesis contributes to a generic approach for analyzing different trace formats, thereby facilitating the analysis of RAN applications deployed across diverse platforms. / Radio Access Network (RAN) spelar en viktig roll när det gäller att möjliggöra anslutning till mobilnät med hjälp av radiovågor. Att få en omfattande förståelse för RAN-applikationer är avgörande, och trace-analys ger värdefulla insikter i deras verksamhet. Moderna RAN-applikationer kan driftsättas på olika plattformar, vilket kan leda till att olika trace-format genereras, vilket komplicerar analysprocessen. Verktyg för trace-analys och visualisering, som Trace Compass, kan användas för att underlätta processen, men för varje nytt trace-format måste användaren ofta skapa ny kod och nya visualiseringar. Detta behövs även när olika traceformat som genereras av samma applikation innehåller liknande information. För att övervinna denna begränsning introducerar denna avhandling en innovativ metod för att generalisera tolkningen av trace-data, vilket gör det möjligt att återanvända befintlig analys och visualisering oberoende av traceformatet. Dessutom introduceras ett domänspecifikt språk (DSL) för att förenkla trace-analysförfarandet. Den föreslagna avhandlingen bidrar till en generisk metod för analys av olika trace-format, vilket underlättar analysen av RANapplikationer somanvänds på olika plattformar.

A Screening Life Cycle Analysis Of One-Way And Reusable Crate Designs – Estimating Environmental Impacts Via LCA Software

A comparison analysis conducted via COMPASS life cycle analysis software has indicated that a one-way crate design, rather than a reusable crate design, is in fact the more environmentally friendly packaging system. These results can be interpreted differently, however, as the manufacturer of said crate designs must confirm what impact indicators they would like to reference as environmental goalposts. The conducted analysis provides insight into what the environmental impacts of each packaging system look like as packaging at all three system levels has been identified as a means of reducing environmental impacts globally. As such, the manufacturer of said crate designs would like to establish a baseline understanding of what the environmental impact of their products look like. Version 3.5 of COMPASS LCA software was utilized, which references ecoinvent 3.9.1 LCA databases as well as U.S. Life Cycle Inventory (USLCI) LCA methodologies. These findings are significant as they affirm that all packaging system inputs and product life-cycle phases must be carefully considered as they impact every impact indicator score differently.

Applications of quantum coherence in condensed matter nanostructures

This thesis is concerned with studying the fascinating quantum properties of real-world nanostructures embedded in a noisy condensed matter environment. The interaction with light is used for controlling and manipulating the quantum state of the systems considered here. In some instances, laser pulses also provide a way of actively probing and controlling environmental interactions. The first two research chapters assess two different ways of performing all-optical spin qubit gates in self-assembled quantum dots. The principal conclusion is that an `adiabatic' control technique holds the promise of achieving a high fidelity when all primary sources of decoherence are taken into account. In the next chapter, it is shown that an optically driven quantum dot exciton interacting with the phonons of the surrounding lattice acts as a heat pump. Further, a model is developed which predicts the temperature-dependent damping of Rabi oscillations caused by bulk phonons, finding an excellent agreement with experimental data. A different system is studied in the following chapter: two electron spin qubits with no direct interaction, yet both exchange-coupled to an optically active mediator spin. The results of this study show that these general assumptions are sufficient for generating controlled electron spin entanglement over a wide range of parameters, even in the presence of noise. Finally, the Radical Pair model of the avian compass is investigated in the light of recent experimental results, leading to the surprising prediction that the electron spin coherence time in this molecular system seems to approach the millisecond timescale.

The Palestinian Archipelago and the Construction of Palestinian Identity After Sixty-five Years of Diaspora: the Rebirth of the Nation

This dissertation conceptualizes a Palestinian archipelago based on Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of the chronotope, and uses the archipelago model to illustrate the situation and development of Palestinian consciousness in diaspora. To gain insight into the personal lives of Palestinians in diaspora, This project highlights several islands of Palestinian identities as represented in the novels: Dancing Arabs, A Compass for the Sunflower, and The Inheritance. The identities of the characters in these works are organized according to the archipelago model, which illustrates how the characters rediscover, repress, or change their identities in order to accommodate life in diaspora. Analysis reveals that a major goal of Palestinian existence in diaspora is the maintenance of an authentic Palestinian identity. Therefore, my description of the characters’ identities and locations in the archipelago model are informed by various scholars and theories of nationalism. Moreover, this dissertation illustrates how different Palestinian identities coalesce into a single national consciousness that has been created and sustained by a collective experience of suffering and thirst for sense of belonging and community among Palestinians. Foremost in the memories of all Palestinians is the memory of the land of Palestine and the dream of national restoration; these are the main uniting factors between Palestinians revealed in my analysis. Furthermore, this project presents an argument that developing a Palestinian exceptionalism as both a response and a solution to the problems Palestine faced in the 20th century has already occurred among diasporic Palestinians as well as those settled in the West Bank. In addition, a significant finding of this dissertation is the generation clash in regarding to the methods of modernization of the West Bank society between the settled Palestinian and those returning from diaspora. Nevertheless, a Palestinian homecoming will require a renegotiation of Palestinian identities in which generation gaps and other disagreements will be resolved and transcended in favor of nation-state building.

The Effectiveness of Reading Interventions for Middle School Students with Learning Disabilities

Students with learning disabilities are often unable to master reading comprehension and often fail to acquire reading comprehension skills at basic levels as measured on reading achievement assessments. Reading intervention programs Compass Learning and SRA Corrective Reading teach students how to apply strategies to their reading to improve their understanding of written text. The purpose of this quantitative ex-post facto research design was to determine the extent to which the reading intervention programs implemented at the research school improved reading achievement scores for seventh grade students with learning disabilities in reading, and to determine how much scores changed from the pretests to the posttests for two intervention groups. The theoretical framework for this study was the cognitive load theory. Data included Scholastic Reading Inventory scores from a convenience sample of 46 seventh grade students with learning disabilities in reading. The data were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA pretest-posttest design. Data analyses indicated statistically significant differences in the reading achievement scores of the student participants, indicating they had higher reading achievement scores after participating in targeted reading interventions. This research contributes to positive social change by motivating students to be actively engaged in their reading and apply the skills they have learned as a result of participating in targeted reading interventions. This research also prepares students for the competitive job market through identifying viable interventions to help improve their reading comprehension skills.

A Correlation of Community College Math Readiness and Student Success

Although traditional college students are more prepared for college-level math based on college admissions tests, little data have been collected on nontraditional adult learners. The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships between math placement tests and community college students' success in math courses and persistence to degree or certificate completion. Guided by Tinto's theory of departure and student retention, the research questions addressed relationships and predictability of math Computer-adaptive Placement Assessment and Support System (COMPASS) test scores and students' performance in math courses, persistence in college, and degree completion. After conducting correlation and regression analyses, no significant relationships were identified between COMPASS Math test scores and students' performance (n = 234) in math courses, persistence in college, or degree completion. However, independent t test and chi-squared analyses of the achievements of college students who tested into Basic Math (n = 138) vs. Introduction to Algebra (n = 96) yielded statistically significant differences in persistence (p = .039), degree completion (p < .001), performance (p = .008), and progress (p = .001), indicating students who tested into Introduction to Algebra were more successful and persisted more often to degree completion. In order to improve instructional methods for Basic Math courses, a 3-day professional development workshop was developed for math faculty focusing on current, best practices in remedial math instruction. Implications for social change include providing math faculty with the knowledge and skills to develop new instructional methods for remedial math courses. A change in instructional methods may improve community college students' math competencies and degree achievement.
