Digital Test of Composite Material Using X-Ray Tomography and Finite Element Simulation

Characterization of composite materials, such as Asphalt Concrete (AC) and other engineering materials is required to provide data for design and construction. This is usually carried out through various performance tests, which are always time consuming for specimen preparation, equipment calibration and test setting up. For materials with time- and temperature-dependent properties, this procedure requires fabrication of a large number of specimens in order to get reasonably comprehensive results. Furthermore, for materials that consist of phases with significant differences in properties, macroscopic homogeneous assumption or microscopic statistic approximation will lead to complex correction schemes. This will add complexity in material characterization. On the other hand, the homogeneity based interpretation of test results makes it difficult to understand the interaction between different components. The objective of this research is to develop a numerical testing method for material characterization based on x-ray tomography and finite element method. The introduction of tomography technology, such as x-ray tomography into engineering field makes it possible to obtain material microstructure without disturbing the phase configuration. Along with the development of image analysis technology, image data can be manipulated to obtain digitalized sample reconstruction and to build finite element geometric model. Based on well developed material models that sufficiently capture the essential behavior of individual material component, we developed a framework of numerical tests for characterization of composite material. The geometric model imports the microstructural data of the sample, the configuration of aggregates, voids and flakes, through x-ray tomography and image processing. The voids distribution as well as density variation was quantified to verify the model microscopic characteristics. FORTRAN programs were developed to automatically achieve data transfer and model generation, e.g. boundary identification and ABAQUS simulation model generation. Material model was studied and selected for different material components. Viscoplastic material models were evaluated and calibrated in ABAQUS. Monotonic loading and repeated loading were considered in the study to validate the model for most characterization needs. The digital model was validated through small sample tests and was implemented and used in various material characterizations. For the wood panel characterization, the anisotropic elastic properties were studied while the viscous and plastic responses were studied for asphalt concrete. Factors affecting the accuracy and the limitations of the application were determined. It is worth noting that further advance and data collection will make the calibration of material model more accurate. Nevertheless, the work can be extended to other regimes, such as high speed impact especially where the actual testing is complicated to setup. / Ph. D.

Binder Film Thickness Effect on Aggregate Contact Behavior

This study presents a study on the binder film thickness effect on aggregate contact behavior. As a three-phase material composed of aggregates, asphalt binder and air voids, asphalt mixture could be considered as a visco-elastic material in the low stress level. Since the behavior of the mixture depends largely on the relationship of different components, a well developed contact model for micro-structural modeling is very important for understanding the deformation mechanism of the mixture. In this study, the contact modeling of asphalt mixture was reviewed and the numerical tools used to investigate the micromechanical behavior of asphalt mixture will also be introduced. By using the cabinet x-ray tomography system, the displacement and resistant force of a system of particles bonded by a thin layer binder are measured and recorded. Then, the results are compared with the theoretical solutions of a normal compliance model for a system comprised of two elastic particles bonded by a thin layer of visco-elastic binder. A closed-form time-dependent relationship between the contact forces and the relative particle/binder movements was developed. A reasonable agreement between experiments results and model predicted results is obtained combined with parametric analysis. / Master of Science

[pt] Para desenvolver materiais sustentáveis e estruturais, as técnicas de construção tradicionais são avaliadas em termos de normas técnicas de engenharia e os métodos de construção equivalentes são melhorados para aperfeiçoar o desempenho estrutural. No entanto, o uso de materiais naturais é limitado pelas tradições culturais com pouca ou nenhuma padronização, um exemplo é a diversidade de palmeiras nos trópicos latino-americanos, material para construções indígenas e outros usos. Portanto, este trabalho apresenta resultados da micro-estrutura, meso- estrutura e macro-estrutura para duas idades de troncos de palma Bactris gasipaes Kunth comumente conhecida como Pupunha. A microscopia óptica digital foi usada para a análise micro-estrutural, e para caracterizar a macroestrutura foi utilizado o processamento digital de imagens encontrando-se a variação da fracção de volume de fibras e o elemento de volume representativo (RVE). Além disso, foi realizada uma analise experimental para determinar as propriedades físicas básicas (umidade e gravidade especifica) e as propriedades mecânicas à tensão, flexão e torção, gerando como resultado a força máxima de tração (TS), o módulo de elasticidade de tração (TMO), o módulo de elasticidade de flexão (BMOE) e o módulo de rigidez (MOR). / [en] To develop sustainable and structural materials, traditional construction techniques are evaluated in terms of engineering standards and methods of equivalent design are improved to optimize structural performance. However, the use of natural materials is limited by cultural traditions with little or no standardization, one example is the diversity of palms in the Latin American tropics, material of indigenous constructions and others uses. Therefore, this work presents results of micro-structure, meso-structure and macro-structure for two ages of palm stem Bactris gasipaes Kunth groups commonly known as Peach Palm or Pupunha. Optical microscopy was performed for the micro structural analysis. Digital Image Processing was used to characterize the macrostructure, the variation of fiber volume fraction and the representative volume element (RVE). Furthermore, experimental research was carried out to determine basic physical properties (moisture and specific gravity) and mechanical properties to tension, flexion and torsion, generating as results the maximum tensile Strength (TS), the tensile modulus of elasticity (TMOE), bending modulus of elasticity (BMOE) and Modulus of Rigidity (MOR).

Thermo-Oxidative Degradation of High Temperature Polyimide Composites : Characterization and Modeling of Composites Affected by an Extreme Environment

Carbon fiber (CF) 8-harness satin weave, T650/Neximid system of [(+45/-45)/(0/90)]2S and [(0/90)]4S layup was manufactured using resin transfer molding (RTM). The material was cut into 3-point bending specimens and treated for 24 hours in a burn oven at T=(320,350,375,400,450 & 500)°C. The material was tested according to ASTM E1640-13 using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). Un-treated material showed Tg levels of 384°C and 392°C for the respective layups. It was found that pre-Tg treatment between 320-375°C affected this material parameter up to similar levels as previous studies of post Tg exposure for 2h to ~420°C [4]. Subjecting the material for post-Tg exposure at 400°C showed a rapid change up to ~480°C for [(0/90)]4S laminate. Indications that this resin system could reach levels above 500°C was found for [(+45/-45)/(0/90)]2S layup. However, one of these specimens were unfit for testing. DMTA tested material for 400°C showed indications of degradation, found by a broadening of the tan delta peak. This can be put in relation to epoxy where a similar behavior appear after 24h exposure at 150°C. Furthermore, it was showed that poor quality laminate, elevated mass loss at this temperature. When the material was subjected to as high temperatures as 450°C only remaining fibers were found. At 500°C these were almost fully oxidized. 400°C data was predicted by the use of activation energy along with TG extrapolation. It was possible to show that ~1/8 out of this 8-layered structure, (½ of each surface layer), was degraded after 400°C exposure for 24h, resulting in diffusion limited oxidation (DLO). Last but not least, DLO assumptions was used to predict the storage modulus change for thermo-oxidative degradation of 400°C samples with Classic Laminate Theory (CLT). A ~4% stiffness decrease was predicted by this method. The drop is regarded as a loss in tensile stiffness of the outer damaged layer. This was compared by 3-point bending DMTA data showing a ~7% decrease. This model could thus be regarded as a contributing factor for the stiffness decrease of this complex degradation process. / Kolfiber, 8-harness satin väv, T650/NEXIMID system med [(+45/-45)/(0/90)]2S och [(0/90)]4S orientering, tillverkades via RTM. Från materialet tillverkades 3-punkts böjprover. Dessa behandlades i 24 timmar vid T=(320, 350, 375, 400, 450 & 500)°C, i en brännugn. Materialet testades i enighet med ASTM E1640-13 via DMTA. Obehandlat material visade Tg nivåer av 384°C och 392°C för de respektive uppläggningarna. Pre-Tg exponering, vid 320-375°C, påverkade Tg upp till liknande nivåer som tidigare studier, (post-Tg 2h), ~420°C [4]. När materialet utsätts för post Tg exponering under 24 timmar vid 400°C kunde man se en snabb förändring av Tg, upp till ~480°C för [(0/90)]4S laminatet. Från [(+45/-45)/(0/90)]2S laminatet kunde man dessutom se indikationer på att nivån kunde nå över 500°C. Däremot var en av dessa prov inte kvalificerad för test efter behandlingen. DMTA testat material för 400°C visade indikationer av nedbrytning, via en breddning av piken för tan-delta kurvan. Det var dessutom möjligt att se att laminat av sämre kvalitet påverkade viktminskningen signifikant högre vid denna exponering. När material utsattes för så höga temperaturer som 450°C var endas fiber kvar efter test, vilket vid 500°C nästan var fullt nedbrutna. 400°C data förutspåddes via extrapolering av TG och Arrhenius beräkning. Beräkningen ledde till en övre gräns för nedbrytningen. Vidare var det möjligt att visa att ~1/8 av dessa 8-lager bröts ner efter 24 timmars exponering vid 400°C. Nedbrytningen motsvarar ½ av vartdera ytlager via diffusions begränsad oxidation (DLO). Sist men inte minst, kunskapen om DLO användes för att förutspå styvhetsförändringen vid termo-oxiderande nedbrytning med hjälp av klassisk laminat teori (CLT). DLO antogs resultera i en volymfraktionsförändring i det yttersta lagret. Detta implementerades i CLT där man kunde beräkna en ~4% styvhetsminskning via denna modell där det yttre skadade lagret har en reducerad dragstyvhet. Från testade böjprover i DMTA kunde man se en verklig ~7% styvhetsminskning för samma exponeringsvillkor. Modellen kan därmed ses som en bidragande del av denna komplexa nedbrytningsprocess.

Conception et réalisation d'antennes en matériaux composites : intégration dans des plates-formes / Conception and fabrication of composite antennas : integration in land and naval platforms

Les besoins techniques et opérationnels des porteurs navals, terrestres et aériens conduisent à la conception et à l'implantation d'un nombre de plus en plus élevé d'antennes dédiées aux communications. Parallèlement, les matériaux composites sont utilisés depuis de nombreuses décennies dans les panneaux structuraux de ces porteurs en raison de leurs qualités naturelles (légèreté, performances mécaniques élevées, insensibilité à la corrosion…). L'objet de ce manuscrit concerne l'étude et le développement de matériaux composites pour des applications antennaires en hyperfréquences. Après un recensement exhaustif des caractéristiques diélectriques des différents éléments constitutifs de ces matériaux composites, la caractérisation diélectrique des matériaux composites fabriqués au Laboratoire a été réalisée via deux méthodes distinctes dans deux bandes de fréquence différentes. Parallèlement, la caractérisation électrique des tissus à base de fibres de carbone a permis d'évaluer leur possible utilisation dans la fabrication des éléments rayonnants. Dans un premier temps, deux topologies antennaires « tout composite » de géométrie carrée à base de tissus de fibres de carbone, de fibres de verre et de résine (polyester ou époxy) ont été conçues, fabriquées et caractérisées. Leurs performances similaires à celles d'antennes métalliques de référence démontrent tout l'intérêt de l'utilisation des matériaux composites en hyperfréquences. Puis, trois topologies antennaires ultra large bande en matériaux « tout composite » ont été développées spécifiquement dans le cadre du projet FUI SAMCOM (/Systèmes Antennaires en Matériaux COMposites/). La première de type Rugby-Ball couvre une octave et demi avec un gain positif et un encombrement limité à λ/4 x λ/4 x λ/10 (longueur x largeur x hauteur). La seconde configuration volumique de type dipôle et d'encombrement λ/3 x λ/3 x λ/10 couvre deux octaves et demi avec un gain toujours positif. Enfin, la troisième de structure planaire a été développée spécifiquement pour la réception de la Télévision Numérique Terrestre (TNT) et sera, à terme, intégrée dans un panneau structural d'un véhicule. / The technical and operational requirements of naval, terrestrial and aerial vehicles lead to the design and installation of a great number of antennas for communications. At the same time, composite materials have been used for many decades in structural panels of vehicles for their intrinsic qualities (lightness, high mechanical performance, insensitivity to corrosion ...). The purpose of this manuscript is the study and engineering of composite materials for antenna applications at microwaves. After an exhaustive survey of the dielectric characteristics of the various elements of composite materials, dielectric characterization of composite materials manufactured in the Laboratory was carried out using two different methods in two different frequency bands. Meanwhile, an analysis of their conductive characteristics allows carbon-fiber tissues to be used in the design of radiating elements. First, two "full-composite" square shaped antennas based on carbon-fiber tissues, glass-fiber tissues and polyester or epoxy resin have been developed, fabricated and measured. Their performance, similar to that of reference metal antennas demonstrates their relevance for microwave applications. Then, three different topologies of ultra wideband "full-composite" antennas have been specifically developed for the SAMCOM (/Antenna Systems in COMposite Materials)/ FUI project. The first, a Rugby-Ball shaped antenna, has one octave and a half of bandwidth with a positive gain and λ/4 x λ/4 x λ/10 dimensions (length x width x height). The second, a 3D dipole antenna with λ/3 x λ/3 x λ/10 dimensions, has two octaves and a half of bandwidth also with a positive gain. At last, the third antenna with a planar structure has been specifically developed for the reception of digital terrestrial television (DTT) and will be, at the end, integrated into a structural panel of a terrestrial vehicle.

Caracterização mecânica de material compósito cimentício avançado à base de pós reativos / Mechanical Characterization of Advanced Reactive Powder Cementitious Composite Material

O compósito de pós reativos é um material formado basicamente por uma argamassa de matriz cimentícia ricamente refinada em termos de granulometria e com a inclusão de fibras, como forma de reforço. Entretanto, duas características principais o definem em termos de composição: a quase ausência de armaduras em estruturas construídas com o material e o fato de dispensar o uso de agregados com diâmetro máximo superior a 1 mm, sendo constituído basicamente por pós. O CPR possui características únicas que lhe conferem resistências à compressão de seis a oito vezes superiores ao concreto convencional, e tração e flexão cerca de dez vezes maior, podendo competir diretamente com estruturas em aço. As dificuldades para sua obtenção e utilização residem no fato de ser um material que demanda grande precisão em sua dosagem e também nos custos diretos para sua produção, bem como o desconhecimento em relação ao seu desempenho. O presente estudo comparou três diferentes traços de CPR a um traço de concreto convencional de uso comum na indústria de préfabricados, de forma a caracterizá-lo mecanicamente e buscando viabilizar sua produção e aplicação na indústria de pré-fabricados nacional, utilizando cinza volante como alternativa de aglomerante e a hibridização de fibras. Efetuou-se também um estudo comparativo dos custos de sua obtenção em relação ao concreto convencional, levando-se em conta o desempenho mecânico. Os resultados indicam que para todos os traços estudados, em relação ao concreto convencional estabelecido como parâmetro, as principais propriedades mecânicas contemplam uma resistência à compressão até quatro vezes superior; módulo de elasticidade longitudinal 50% superior; resistência à tração na flexão até sete vezes superior e resistência à tração direta cerca de três vezes superior. Com relação aos custos, ao se considerar o seu comportamento mecânico, o CPR se mostrou mais competitivo frente ao concreto convencional, demonstrando que a sua implantação, dentro da indústria de pré-fabricados nacional, pode e deve ser explorada. / Reactive powder composite is a material formed by a richly refined cementitious mortar matrix in terms of grain size and the inclusion of fibers, such as reinforcement. However, two main features define it in terms of composition: the almost absence of reinforcement steel and the use of aggregates with a maximum diameter greater than 1 mm, consisting basically by powder materials. RPC has unique characteristics which confer compressive strength six to eight times higher than conventional concrete and tensile and flexural strength about ten times higher, and may compete directly with steel structures. Difficulties in obtaining and use the material lie in the fact that it requires a great precision in the dosage and also the direct costs for its production, as well as the lack of knowledge about its performance. This study compared three different CPR mixes to a conventional concrete mix, commonly used in the precast industry, in order to characterize it mechanically and intending to disseminate its production and use in the national precast industry by using fly ash as a binder and alternative fiber hybridization. It also made a comparative study between the costs of obtaining CPR compared to conventional concrete, taking into account the mechanical performance. The results indicate that for all mixes studied in relation to conventional concrete set as a parameter, the primary mechanical properties include a compressive strength up to four times higher; longitudinal elastic modulus exceeding 50%; bending tensile strength up to seven times and resistance to direct tension about three times higher. Considering the costs compared to the mechanical behavior, CPR was found more competitive against the conventional concrete, demonstrating that its implementation within the national precast industry can and should be explored.

Etude expérimentale et numérique de la propagation de coupure dans des stratifiés composites soumis à des chargements complexes / Numerical and Experimental investigations on two bays cracks propagation into carbon/epoxy composites under complex loadings

La sensibilité des structures composites à la présence d'endommagements importants en zones singulières (trou, pointe d'entaille.. impose d'évaluer leur tolérance aux dommages. Dans un premier temps, un dialogue essai-calcul pour des sollicitations uniaxiales de traction simple sur composite stratifiés lisses, troués (plusieurs diamètres) et entaillés est mis en place. En utilisant différentes méthodes de suivi expérimental insitu (corrélation d'images, thermographie infrarouge) et post-mortem (micro-tomographie aux rayons-X), les scénarios de ruptures sont identifiés et comparés à ceux déterminés par simulation numérique « Discrete Ply Model ». Le modèle numérique est démontré valide pour simuler les cas étudiés (traction uniaxiale). Les influences de plusieurs paramètres du modèle sont étudiées dont la taille de maille et la présence de fissures discrètes. Dans un second temps, une étude expérimentale des stratifiés entaillés soumis à des sollicitations combinées à l'échelle supérieure (détail structural) est menée à l'aide du montage VERTEX conçu spécifiquement pour ces travaux. La modélisation de ce type d'essai est amorcée sur une plaque en aluminium pour valider la méthodologie de transfert de conditions limites obtenues par corrélation d'images. Cette stratégie est ensuite appliquée à un des drapages composite étudiés pour modéliser plusieurs types de sollicitations pour valider le « Discrete Ply Model » sur des cas de charge supplémentaires. / Composite structures sensitivity to substantial damage around notches leads us to assess their damage tolerance. First, both experiments and numerical simulations are being performed on small coupons under uniaxial tension for different configurations (plain, open-hole With different diameters and U-notch specimens). Using different methods of in situ experimental monitoring (image correlation, infrared thermography) and post-mortem micro-tomography (X-ray), failure scenarios are identified and compared to those determined by numerical simulations. The "Discrete Ply Model" is then proven valid to simulate the cases studied (uniaxial tension). The influences of several parameters such as mesh size and the presence of discrete cracks are investigated. Second, an experimental study of notched laminates subjected to complex loadings (structural detail scale) is conducted With the VERTEX rig, designed specifically for this work. Then, simulating this ype of tests is initiated on an aluminum plate to validate the methodology of boundary conditions (obtained by image correlation) transfer. This strategy is then applied to a notched laminated composite to validate the "Discrete Ply Model" on additional loading cases.

Estudo das propriedades físicas e mecânicas e da durabilidade de compósitos cimentícios reforçados com fibra amazônica / Study of physical and mechanical properties and durability of the cementation composites reinforced with amazon fiber

O presente estudo tem como objetivo principal desenvolver um compósito cimentício reforçado com fibras de arumã. O intuito é agregar valor a uma planta típica da região Amazônica, denominada arumã, pertencente à espécie do gênero Ischnosiphon arouma (aubl) Korn e originária da família Maranthaceae, de tal modo que possa ser obtido um Novo Material. Na primeira etapa do estudo foi realizada a caracterização da fibra vegetal de arumã e de todos os componentes da matriz cimentícia, a qual compreendeu ensaios químicos, físicos e mecânicos para a investigação e avaliação de suas propriedades. Na etapa seguinte, adotou-se o procedimento de trabalhar as características físicas e mecânicas das fibras junto à matriz cimentícia, compreendendo um estudo da modificação superficial da fibra por meio de tratamentos químicos à base de soluções de hidróxido de sódio ou utilizando processos com água quente e hornificação. Na terceira etapa, foram produzidas placas reforçadas com fibras sem e com tratamento, as quais, parte delas foram submetidas à cura por 28 dias e as restantes ao ensaio de envelhecimento acelerado. Os resultados obtidos na caracterização das fibras de arumã indicam o seu potencial uso como elemento de reforço para compósitos cimentícios. Por outro lado, os compósitos produzidos com telas de fibra de arumã sem e com tratamento (hornificação e alcalino), apresentaram comportamento pouco dúctil e com baixa resistência, como consequência da degradação das fibras na matriz cimentícia. Isso foi confirmado por meio de ensaios de envelhecimento acelerado com ciclos de molhagem e secagem. / This present study aims to develop a cementation composite reinforced with arumã fiber. The aim is to aggregate value to a typical plant of the Amazon region, called arumã, belonging to species of the genus Ischnosiphon arouma (Aubl) Korn and originally from Maranthaceae family, so that, it can be obtained a New Material. In the first stage of the study was performed the characterization the vegetable fiber arumã and all components of the cementicious matrix, which comprised chemical, physical and mechanical tests for research and evaluation of their properties. In the next stage, it was adopted the procedure of working the physical and mechanical characteristics of the fibers with the cementitious matrix comprising a study of the surface of the fiber modification by chemical treatments using sodium hydroxide solution or employing procedures with hot water and hornification. In the third step, the reinforced plates were produced without and with treatment, which, part of were subjected to cure for 28 days and the remaining subjected to the accelerated aging test. The results obtained in the characterization of arumã fibers indicate its potential use as a reinforcement element for cementicious composites. On the other hand, the composites produced with arumã fiber fabrics without and with a treatment (hornification and alkaline) showed slightly ductile behavior and low strength as a result of degradation of fibers in the cementitious matrix. This was confirmed through accelerated aging tests with wetting and drying cycles.

Ces travaux de thèse portent sur l'étude expérimentale approfondie d'un composite à base polyamide 66/6 renforcé par des fibres de verres tissés suivant un motif sergé 2/2. L’objectif est de proposer des solutions de Contrôle Non Destructif (CND) basées sur les ultrasons afin de détecter différents niveaux d’endommagement induis. Pour cela, une étude approfondis des mécanismes d’endommagement apparaissant lors de sollicitations en traction suivant l’axe des fibres et hors axes est réalisé. Le cas d’impact induis par poids tombant est également étudiés. En effet, ces différents cas de sollicitions entraînent l’apparition de différent mécanismes d’endommagement. Ces derniers, ainsi que leur ordre d’apparition, sont caractérisés par Microscopie Electronique à Balayage (MEB) et tomographie à rayons X principalement. L’évaluation de la réduction du module élastique pré et post chargement ainsi que la fraction volumique de vide montrent une évolution de l’endommagement plus importante lors de chargement en traction hors axes des fibres que lors de chargement suivant l’axe. Lors des essais d’impact par poids tombant différents niveaux d’énergie sont considérés en restant proche du domaine des BVID en vue d’éprouver la sensibilité des méthodes de CND. Deux méthodes de CND par ultrasons étudiées durant ce projet peuvent être mises en avant. Premièrement, par mesure de la vitesse de propagation des ondes dans plusieurs directions du composites, le tenseur de rigidité est estimé dans tous ces cas de sollicitation mécanique pour différents niveaux d’endommagement. Des indicateurs d’endommagement basés sur ces mesures montrent une évolution de l’état d’endommagement similaire à celle discutée précédemment. Deuxièmement, une étude de la détection de l’endommagement par ondes guidées est menée. Aucun changement des modes transmit n’est visible lors de l’augmentation de l’état d’endommagement. L’évolution de l’énergie du signal transmis est alors proposée et validée comme indicateur d’endommagement efficace pour des chargements en traction mais pas pour l’impact. La mesure du décalage temporel à en revanche permis une localisation et une quantification de l’endommagement induit par impact. / The present study is focused on the experimental study of a polyamide 66/6 based composite reinforced by a 2/2 twill weave glass fabric. The aim is to propose Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) methods based on ultrasound that can efficiently distinguish different damage state. In order to do so, an investigation of the damage mechanisms induced by different type of mechanical solicitations. Tension along and off the axis of the fibers was considered as well as the case of drop weight impact. Those solicitations were shown to induce different damage mechanisms. The latter were characterized by means of Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM) and X-Ray tomography mostly. The decreasing of the elastic modulus and the void volume fraction evolution were shown to be more significant for the samples loaded in tension off-axis. During the drop weight impact tests, the energies were considered in order to remain close to the Barely Visible Impact Damage (BVID) regime in order to experience the capability of the ultrasound based NDE methods. Two NDE methods investigated during this study deserve to be highlighted. Firstly, the stiffness tensor was estimated by means of phase velocities measurements in different propagation direction. Damage indicators based on results from this method were proposed. They were found to give results similar with the one from the evaluation of damage discussed earlier on. Secondly, a study of the damage detection using guided waves was performed. No mode conversion effect was observed from this investigation. Consequently, the signal energy was proposed as damage indicator and was found to be suitable to detect damage induced by tension but not by impact. The measure of time shift allowed obtaining a localization and evaluation of the damage induced by impact.

Les métaux micro ou nanoporeux sont très attrayants notamment pour leur grande surface spécifique. Le désalliage dans un bain de métal liquide permet une dissolution sélective d'une espèce chimique (l'élément soluble) à partir d'un alliage d'origine (le précurseur) composé de l'élément soluble et d'un élément cible (qui deviendra nano/micro poreux) non soluble dans le bain de métal liquide. Quand le précurseur est plongé dans le bain de métal liquide, à son contact, l'élément soluble va se dissoudre dans le bain tandis que l'élément cible va en parallèle se réorganiser spontanément afin de former une structure poreuse. Quand l'échantillon est retiré du bain, il est sous la forme d'une structure bi-continue composée de deux phases : l'une étant la structure poreuse composée de l'élément cible et l'autre est une phase dans laquelle est présente l'élément du bain avec l'élément sacrificiel en solution solide. Cette phase peut être dissoute par une attaque chimique afin d’obtenir le métal nano/micro poreux. Les objectifs principaux de cette thèse sont l'élaboration et la caractérisation microstructurale et mécanique de 3 différents types de matériaux par désalliage dans un bain de métal liquide : des composites métal-métal (FeCr-Mg), des métaux poreux (FeCr) et des composites métal-polymère (FeCr-matrice époxy). Le dernier objectif est l'évaluation des possibilités d'utiliser la technique de désalliage dans un bain de métal liquide dans un contexte industriel. L'étude de la microstructure est basée sur des observations 3D faites par tomographie aux rayons X et des analyses 2D réalisées en microscopie électronique (SEM, EDX, EBSD). Pour mieux comprendre le désalliage, le procédé a été suivi in situ en tomographie aux rayons X et diffraction. Enfin, les propriétés mécaniques ont été évaluées par nanoindentation et compression. / Nanoporous metals have attracted considerable attention for their excellent functional properties. The first developed technique used to prepare such nanoporous noble metals is dealloying in aqueous solution. Porous structures with less noble metals such as Ti or Fe are highly desired for various applications including energy-harvesting devices. The less noble metals, unstable in aqueous solution, are oxidized immediately when they contact water at a given potential so aqueous dealloying is only possible for noble metals. To overcome this limitation, a new dealloying method using a metallic melt instead of aqueous solution was developed. Liquid metal dealloying is a selective dissolution phenomenon of a mono-phase alloy solid precursor: one component (referred as soluble component) being soluble in the metallic melt while the other (referred as targeted component) is not. When the solid precursor contacts the metallic melt, only atoms of the soluble component dissolve into the melt inducing a spontaneously organized bi-continuous structure (targeted+sacrificial phases), at a microstructure level. This sacrificial phase can finally be removed by chemical etching to obtain the final nanoporous materials. Because this is a water-free process, it has enabled the preparation of nanoporous structures in less noble metals such as Ti, Si, Fe, Nb, Co and Cr. The objectives of this study are the fabrication and the microstructure and mechanical characterization of 3 different types of materials by dealloying process : (i) metal/metal composites (FeCr-Mg), (ii) porous metal (FeCr) (iii) metal/polymer composites (FeCr-epoxy resin). The last objective is the evaluation of the possibilities to apply liquid metal dealloying in an industrial context. The microstructure study was based on 3D observation by X-ray tomography and 2D analysis with electron microscopy (SEM, SEM-EDX, SEM-EBSD). To have a better understanding of the dealloying, the process was followed in situ by X-ray tomography and X-ray diffraction. Finally the mechanical properties were evaluated by nanoindentation and compression.
