Monitoring the connectivity of hydrological pathways in a peatland headwater catchment

Variations in drainage density have been observed in a range of environments as the perennial stream network expands into headwater reaches. This network expansion and contraction results in large changes in drainage density and as such, has implications for the connectivity of the catchment and the associated flux of water, sediments and solutes. One environment where these changes have been observed is peatlands. The accurate characterisation of catchment connectivity in peatlands is desirable for a number of reasons, not least to understand the controls on carbon flux. In addition, the accurate characterisation of these systems will help us to predict the impacts of a changing climate. It is hitherto been difficult to quantify changes in connectivity due to the logistical difficulties of monitoring this phenomenon. The use of Electrical Resistance (ER) technology has shown potential to detect the presence and absence of water. This method is built on here and a range of sensors are developed to monitor connectivity at high temporal and spatial resolutions, specifically flow in ephemeral portions of the channel network, pipeflow and overland flow. The study takes places in the Upper North Grain research catchment, a small peatland headwater catchment in the south Pennines, UK. The data collected on ephemeral streamflows highlight the importance of water table as a control on changes in network extent in the study catchment, as the presence or absence of flow at each site is strongly controlled by local water table. This allows the minimum and maximum drainage density within the catchment to be determined, as well how frequently these states occur. Pipe stormflow generation appears to be strongly linked to the production of saturation excess overland flow. The pipe network is very sensitive to small inputs of rainfall. In contrast, pipe baseflows seem to be controlled by water table level as pipes are fed by seepage from the peat mass. Pipe behaviour could not be related to any of the morphological characteristics presented here and is though to be dependent on the subsurface morphology of the pipe network. Overland flow production was monitored at a gully head and gully side location. At the gully head the incidence of overland flow increased with distance from the gully edge due to higher local water tables encouraging the production of saturation excess overland flow. At the gully side, extreme water table drawdown has caused the peat to become hydrophobic and the incidence of overland flow is high here, due to infiltration excess. This signifies a major advancement in our knowledge of runoff pathways in peatlands as the importance of infiltration excess overland flow has not been acknowledged until now. In general, ephemeral streamflows occur before the production of either overland flow or pipeflow as incident rainfall causes saturation of the gully floors. The temporal pattern of overland flow and pipeflow is similar, although pipeflow continues after overland flow ceases and is thought to be fed by shallow subsurface flow on the recession limb. Both overland flow and pipeflow precede discharge at the catchment outlet by several minutes. The interaction of these processes is examined under both ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ antecedent conditions. The data collected here provide an accurate characterisation of the dynamics of, and controls on, peatland connectivity under current climatic conditions, providing a reference point to which future observations can be compared.

The conservation genetics of ecologically and commercially important coral reef species

Identifying the extent to which coral reef species are connected by dispersal is a fundamental challenge for developing marine conservation strategies. Many coral reef species are relatively sedentary as adults, yet have a pelagic larval phase where larvae can potentially be widely dispersed by ocean currents. This thesis focuses on the role of ocean currents in driving spatially explicit patterns of population connectivity among ecologically and commercially important coral reef species by combining research tools from population genetics, oceanography, and biophysical modeling. Despite the substantial differences among the life histories of each coral reef species in this thesis, some similarities in connectivity patterns were found among all species. The results of the kinship and genetic outlier analyses consistently found high levels of connectivity among distant populations separated by hundreds to thousands of kilometers. Despite the high levels of connectivity among distant populations, there was substantial variation in gene flow among the populations of each species. The findings of this thesis highlight the importance of international cooperation for the sustainable management of ecologically and commercially important coral reef species in the Caribbean. In conclusion, the findings of this thesis suggest that marine conservation strategies should conservatively plan for uncertainty, particularly since the many of ecological and physical drivers of connectivity among coral reef species in the Caribbean remain uncertain.

Temporal and spatial dynamics of the semantic network : explorations using Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and fMRI

Convergent findings have elucidated the regions involved in semantic cognition. The anterior temporal lobes (ATL) act as a hub for multimodal semantic processing alongside modality-specific ‘spoke’ regions. In addition, areas of inferior parietal, posterior temporal and frontal cortex are necessary for semantic cognition. However, many questions remain. Little is known about the timing of the ATL or how distributed regions interact in order to perform semantic processing. In order to gain knowledge of the precise spatial and temporal dynamics of the ATL and semantic cognition network, a series of studies was performed. Chapter 3 investigated the time at which the ATL is necessary for a semantic judgement using chronometric TMS. The ATL was found to be necessary for semantic cognition from 400ms post-stimuli presentation. This is known to be a critical time for semantic processing. Processing of items presented in different modalities converges around this time. This supports the role of the ATL in multimodal semantic cognition. Chapter 4 used offline repetitive TMS to investigate the role of ATL subregions and posterior temporal cortex in semantic and phonological processing. However, no significant TMS effects were demonstrated. Chapter 5 employed dual echo fMRI to assess how different types of semantic relationships are instantiated within the brain. Association (spatially and temporally co-occurring concepts) and conceptual similarity (concepts sharing features) were shown to rely on the same cortical regions. This provides evidence against theories suggesting separate representational hubs for these different relationship types. Instead it supports the reliance of both relationship types on the ATL hub. These two kinds of relationship may be more similar than previously thought, with the hub-and-spoke model able to explain both. The semantic network identified here included ATL, posterior temporal, frontal and ventral parietal cortex. This network of semantic regions was shown to be interconnected in Chapter 6 during a semantic task (using a psychophysiological interaction analysis) and during rest (using a seed-based functional connectivity analysis). Differential connectivity was identified between the ventral ATL (to multimodal semantic regions) and the aSTG (to language-related regions). The semantic network overlapped with the default mode network (DMN) and involved regions previously found to constitute the frontoparietal network (FPN).Emergent questions related to the overlap between previously identified network and the semantic network were addressed with preliminary independent component analyses in Chapter 7. This showed the dynamic connectivity of the ATL in task and rest. The semantic network was found to be distinct from but overlapping with the DMN and FPN. The role of this network in semantic cognition was confirmed, whereas the DMN was not found to relate to semantic processing. The anterior DMN component appeared semantic based on activity alone, suggesting prior results relating the DMN to semantic cognition fail to take the dynamic connectivity of the regions in to account. The left FPN overlapped with semantic control regions but appeared to relate to more general control processes. When assessed with dual echo fMRI, the ATL appears to be highly connected in a dynamic fashion and may be an important region currently under-represented within studies of the connectome. Overall, these studies add to the hub-and-spoke model of semantic cognition, elucidating the types of relationship involved, how regions interact and the precise temporal and spatial dynamics of these areas.

A caracterização de redes e o estudo de sistemas, ambos utilizando grafos, é algo muito usado por várias áreas científicas. Uma das linhas deste estudo é denominada de grafos aleatórios, que por sua vez auxilia na criação de modelos para análise de redes reais. Consideramos um modelo de grafo aleatório não homogêneo criado por Kang, Pachón e Rodríguez (2016), cuja construção é feita a partir da realização do grafo binomial G(n; p). Para este modelo, estudamos argumentos e métodos usados para encontrar resultados sobre o limiar de conectividade, importante propriedade relacionada a existência assintótica de vértices e componentes isolados. Em seguida, constatamos algumas características positivas e negativas a respeito da utilização do grafo para modelar redes reais complexas, onde usamos de simulações computacionais e medidas topológicas. / The characterization of networks and the study of systems, both using graphs, is very used by several scientific areas. One of the lines of this study is called random graphs, which in turn assists in creating models for the analysis of real networks. We consider an inhomogeneous random graph model created by Kang, Pachón e Rodríguez (2016), where its construction is made from the realization of the binomial graph G(n; p). For this model, we studied the arguments and methods used to find results on the connectivity threshold, important property related to asymptotic existence of vertices and isolated components. Then we found some positive and negative characteristics about the use of the graph to model complex real networks, using computer simulations and topological measures.

Internet of Things and the next generation of supply chains : Creating visibility through connectivity in an end-to-end automotive supply chain

With the fourth industrial revolution, new technologies and business opportunities arise, enabling previously unknown performance improvement possibilities within the manufacturing industry and its supply chains. The main actor within Industry 4.0; Internet of things (IoT) promises benefits across the entire logistics value chain by increasing supply chain connectivity and visibility. However, IoT is still in its initial stages in the manufacturing industry and respective supply chain environment, leaving uncertainty about possible application areas and impacts. The purpose of this study is therefore to investigate the role IoT-technologies have in enabling supply chain visibility and connectivity, and the impact on supply chain performance. To answer the proposed research questions, the study followed an abductive, cross-sectional research design. Empirical, qualitative data was collected through a combination of document studies and interviews with an automotive Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and several third-party visibility vendors. The analysis of the collected data resulted in an outline describing ten information fields representing the information demands within a connected end-to-end supply chain, how IoT-technologies can be used to satisfy these demands and the general impact of increased visibility on the supply chain performance. To further ease the implementation decisions of IoT solutions for manufacturing OEM’s, additional research regarding the implementation process of an IoT system is needed.

The effects of perceived discrimination on the resting state connectivity of the brain in older adults

Over the last 20 years, there has been increasing research on the negative effects of discrimination on the mental and physical health of people of color. As mental health has an important relationship with the functional connectivity of brain networks, it is vital to further understand this. One way to measure functional brain connectivity is by observing the activity of the brain’s resting state networks (RSN) while a participant is at rest. Previous studies investigating connectivity have demonstrated a relationship between altered connectivity of RSNs and neuropsychiatric disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and anxiety. The RSN of interest in this analysis is the salience network (SN). This network, anchored in the anterior insula and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, is involved in the responses to “salient” stimuli that are infrequent in space or time, compete for an individual’s attention, and are surprising or emotionally engaging, such as an act of discrimination. The aim of this study was to use a seed-based correlation analysis to examine the relationship between perceived discrimination and the functional connectivity of the SN in black and white participants and to evaluate the differences in SN functional connectivity between black and white participants. Resting state functional connectivity was measured by using the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data collected from 18 healthy older adults partaking in two different studies investigating aging, cognition, and the accompanying changes in neuroanatomy. The Analysis of Functional NeuroImages (AFNI) software was used to examine the correlations in activation in the primary nodes of the SN with activation in clusters in the other primary nodes. Perceived discrimination was measured using the Experiences of Discrimination Scale (EOD), a self-report measuring the frequency of instances of discrimination and the perceived reason behind the discrimination. Preliminary results from this analysis demonstrated that black participants, when compared to the white participants, demonstrated greater functional connectivity between the left and right insula and decreased functional connectivity between the right anterior cingulate cortex and the right insula. Black participants demonstrated a positive association between perceived overall discrimination and functional connectivity between the right and left insula and a negative association between perceived overall discrimination and functional connectivity between the right anterior cingulate cortex and the left insula. The white participants demonstrated a negative association between perceived overall discrimination and functional connectivity between the left and the right insula. Considering the inability for these results to survive correction for multiple comparisons, a larger sample size is necessary to obtain true statistical significance. Although existing research has implicated functional connectivity changes in the regions of the salience network in populations experiencing social exclusion, anxiety, and depression, further analyses are necessary to expand the limited research available regarding the effects of overall and race-based discrimination on the resting state functional connectivity of neural networks involved in emotional processing.
