Signal mapping designs for bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative decoding (BICM-ID)

Bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative decoding (BICM-ID)is a spectral efficient coded modulation technique to improve the performance of digital communication systems. It has been widely known that for fixed signal constellation, interleaver and error control code, signal mapping plays an important role in determining the error performance of a BICM-ID system. This thesis concentrates on signal mapping designs for BICM-ID systems. To this end, the distance criteria to find the best mapping in terms of the asymptotic performance are first analytically derived for different channel models. Such criteria are then used to find good mappings for various two-dimensional 8-ary constellations. The usefulness of the proposed mappings of 8-ary constellations is verified by both the error floor bound and simulation results. Moreover, new mappings are also proposed for BICM-ID systems employing the quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) constellation. The new mappings are obtained by considering many QPSK symbols over a multiple symbol interval, which essentially creates hypercube constellations. Analytical and simulation results show that the use of the proposed mappings together with very simple convolutional codes can offer significant coding gains over the conventional BICM-ID systems for all the channel models considered. Such coding gains are achieved without any bandwidth nor power expansion and with a very small increase in the system complexity.

Optical and radar remotely sensed data for large-area wildlife habitat mapping

Wildlife habitat mapping strongly supports applications in natural resource management, environmental conservation, impacts of anthropogenic activity, perturbed ecosystem restoration, species-at-risk recovery and species inventory. Remote sensing has long been identified as a feasible and effective technology for large-area wildlife habitat mapping. However, existing and future uncertainties in remote sensing will definitely have a significant effect on relevant scientific research, such as the limitation of Landsat-series data; the negative impact of cloud and cloud shadows (CCS) in optical imagery; and landscape pattern analysis using remote sensing classification products. This thesis adopted a manuscript-style format; it addresses these challenges (or uncertainties) and opportunities through exploring the state-of-the-art optical and radar remotely sensed data for large-area wildlife habitat mapping, and investigating their feasibility and applicability primarily by comparison either on the level of direct remote sensing products (e.g. classification accuracy) or indirect ecological model (e.g. presence/absence and frequency of use model based on landscape pattern analysis). A framework designed to identify and investigate the potential remotely sensed data, including Disaster Monitoring Constellation (DMC), Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM), Indian Remote Sensing (IRS), and RADARSAT-2, has been developed. The chosen DMC and RADARSAT-2 imagery have acceptable capability of addressing the existing and potential challenges (or uncertainties) in remote sensing of large-area habitat mapping, in order to produce cloud-free thematic maps for the study of wildlife habitat. A quantitative comparison between Landsat-based and IRS-based analyses showed that the characteristics of remote sensing products play an important role in landscape pattern analysis to build grizzly bear presence/absence and frequency of use models.

A Study of Business Architecture of Foundry Fab under Mobile Communication Development Trend

The growth rate in the field of Computer, which is one of the traditional 3C industries, has been getting slower in recent years, then Communication replaces it and serves as the main driving force to keep the 3C industry growing. The author chooses mobile phone as the main subject of the thesis to analyze since mobile phone is the product which has the largest market share and the greatest potential for growth in the field of Communication. Under current trend development of mobile phone, the thesis aims to analyze and investigate 1)the product architecture of mobile phone; 2) what kind of change it has on the business architecture of mobile phone chip manufacturer; 3) what kind of impact it brings on chip manufacturer which works in concert, i.e. Foundry Fab. The research begins with the analysis of the application terminal of market. The author classifies the mobile phone into two categories, namely, low-end and high-end, and organized the collected information/data about the current market demand of mobile phone, changes of internal mobile phone devices, and requirements on Foundry OEM services. Also, data/info about the strategic activities of leading mobile phone IC chip corporations are collected and organized; the collected data will be presented and analyzed. Finally, the analysis will be the base, which the conclusion will be drawn upon. The study discovers that the original product architecture of mobile phone displays an ¡§integral-closed¡¨ structure; however, under current trend development of mobile phone, the low-end mobile phone had changed into a ¡§modular-closed¡¨ structure, even increasing the ¡§open¡¨ degree. The product architecture of high-end mobile phone is characterized by ¡§integral¡¨ and ¡§modular¡¨ since the specifications of internal devices of high-end mobile phone are more complicated and still not established yet. Moreover, the high-end mobile phone is in the stage of development, together with the addition of new functions, which in turn resulted in a perplexing and uncertain business environment. Therefore, companies often form strategic alliances in order to reduce the risks of developing new products in an unstable business environment. The competition pattern has changed from ¡§firm against firm¡¨ to ¡§alliance against alliance¡¨. Hence, we can tell the impacts resulted from the change of product architecture on business architecture. Finally, the answers of some questions are still cannot be found not due to the limitation of the study. Therefore, a list of unsolved questions is given in the end of the study so as to form an initial lead in the development of a ground for further research.

Numerical analysis and design of satellite constellations for above the horizon coverage

As near-Earth space becomes increasingly crowded with spacecraft and debris, the need for improved space situational awareness has become paramount. Contemporary ground-based systems are limited in the detection of very small or dim targets. In contrast, space-based systems, above most atmospheric interference, can achieve significant improvements in dim target detection by observing targets against a clutter-free space background, i.e. targets above the horizon (ATH). In this study, numerical methods for the evaluation of ATH coverage provided by constellations of satellites are developed. Analysis of ATH coverage volume is reduced to a planar analysis of cross-sectional coverage area in the orbit plane. The coverage model performs sequences of boolean operations between polygons representing cross-sections of satellite sensor coverage regions and regions of interest, returning the coverage area at the desired multiplicity. This methodology allows investigation of any coverage multiplicity for planar constellations of any size, and use of arbitrary sensor profiles and regions of interest. The implementation is applied to several constellation design problems demonstrating the utility of the numerical ATH coverage model in a constellation design process. / text

Gaussian Two-Way Channel with Constellation-based Input

Achieving a higher transmission rate had always been a goal in the field of communications. Having a two-way channel in which two nodes transmit and receive data at the same time, is an important tool to achieve this goal. A two-way channel is the first step from point-to-point communication channel toward multi-user networks. In its ideal form, we can transmit data two times faster by using a perfect two-way channel. However, the area of two-way channels had not been of interest of researchers during the past years and number of articles on this area is considerably low comparing to other types of multi-user communication networks, such as multiple-access channel, broadcast channel and interference channel. On the other hand, use of analog-to-digital converters (ADC) is a must in modern systems to enable us to analyze data faster; nevertheless, presence of ADC add some other difficulties to the system. In this thesis, different scenarios about two-way channel are studied. The Shannon's model of two-way channel and his inner and outer bounds on the capacity of this channel are presented. For the Gaussian Two-Way Channel with quantized output, in which the ambient noise has a Gaussian distribution, the expression of Shannon's inner bound for both Gaussian and discrete inputs are derived. The best uniform quantizer to obtain the maximum achievable rate for Gaussian input is found numerically. Then we will evaluate the additive noise model for the quantizer from an information theoretic point of view. For the discrete input, the method of rotating one input with respect to other one is employed to enlarge the achievable rate region. At last, two scenarios will be studied in which, minimizing the power of interference, does not necessarily maximizes the transmission rate.

Role constellations in value co-creation : a study of resource integration in an e-government context

The contribution of the present thesis is describing and explaining how value is co-created by addressing customer-employee role constellations during service encounters. There is a specific focus on customers’ and employees’ resource integration when co-creating value. The thesis consists of five separate papers, one of which is a literature review and four are empirical papers. The empirical papers are based on data from the public employment service and the customs service inSweden. The thesis offers two main contributions; the first of which is to service research by expanding knowledge of resource integration and value co-creation using e-government as the empirical context for outlining customers’ and employees’ value co-creation. The second contribution concerns which roles customers and employees enact during resource integration when value is being co-created. It was found that the roles of the employees were; interactor; customer oriented party, co-creator, and empowered party, while a customer can have the role of information integrator, accessibility needer, dialogue keeper, and/or knowledge transferee. Based on these two contributions, the thesis outlines understandings regarding role constellations in value co-creation. The role constellations suggest that customers and employees enact roles that impact how their resources are integrated.  Finally, the thesis contributes towards building a theory of value co-creation by proposing that the ten foundational premises of S-D logic, together with the four theoretical propositions and the role constellations presented in this thesis, should be seen as an approach to building a theory of value co-creation. Together, these three building blocks offer the following explanation as to what occurs when a customer and an employee co-create value: (1) The ten foundational premises focus on resource integration and value co-creation. (2) The four theoretical propositions offer the explanation that resource integration occurs in the context of roles since a role decides how to use the knowledge and skills. (3) The role constellations give concrete examples of how customers and employees integrate their resources to co-create value.
