Préparation à la caractérisation in-situ de la matière organique cométaire par spectrométrie de masse : application à l'instrument COSIMA

Cette thèse s'inscrit dans le cadre de l'expérience de spectrométrie de masse d'ions secondaires à temps de vol, COSIMA, se trouvant à bord de la mission européenne cométaire Rosetta. Cet instrument a pour vocation de collecter puis de mesurer la nature chimique des grains de la comète 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. L'objectif de ma thèse est de préparer et de faciliter l'interprétation des spectres de masse de COSIMA, et plus particulièrement de leur composante organique réfractaire. Pour cela, à partir d'un instrument de laboratoire conçu spécialement pour présenter des caractéristiques instrumentales similaires à COSIMA, les spectres de masse de deux familles de composés purs (hétérocycles azotés et acides carboxyliques) ont été mesurés. Ces données ont été qualifiées en tant que spectres de masse de référence utilisables par l'équipe COSIMA. Cette base de données est le point de départ de la recherche de marqueurs permettant la distinction des molécules constituées d'atomes particuliers. Deux marqueurs ont été trouvés. Néanmoins ils sont à manipuler avec prudence compte tenu des biais pouvant être induits par la présence de minéraux au sein des grains ou de contaminants sur les cibles d'analyse. L'analyse d'analogues de la matière organique cométaire a également été effectuée. Il en ressort que les mesures réalisées avec COSIMA peuvent présenter des biais importants. L'identification des polymères de HCN en est d'ailleurs compromise. Toutefois, l'analyse d'un grain de la météorite de Murchison montre que la distinction entre les composantes minérale et organique est facilement réalisable. De plus, les signatures de composés clés comme l'hexaméthylènetétramine ou le polyoxyméthylène (POM) sont clairement identifiables dans le mode positif de l'instrument. Le POM étant thermiquement instable, une étude cinétique de sa dégradation thermique a été réalisée en vue de contraindre la stratégie opérationnelle à adopter pour sa détection. Pour maximiser les chances de le détecter dans les grains cométaires, les analyses par COSIMA doivent être effectuées dans les quinze jours après la collecte des grains.

Gender ideology and narrative form in the novels of Henry Handel Richardson

This thesis is a feminist reading of the work of Henry Handel Richardson (1870-1946), which considers her four major novels: Maurice Guest (1908), The Getting of Wisdom (1910), The Fortunes of Richard Mahony (1930), and The Young Cosima (1939). It proposes that Richardson foregrounds the work of gender ideology in her novels, and that her work is also conscious about its own fictional procedures. This thesis argues that Richardson consciously examines the ideological aspect of narrative modes, such as naturalism, the Bildungsroman, and popular romance. Moreover, it illustrates her attempts to invent narrative strategies which subvert the conventional assumptions about gender inherent in those forms. ???Gender Ideology and Narrative Form??? draws on recent theoretical approaches to narrative, ideology, subjectivity, and dialogism, to argue that Richardson makes the ideological shaping of her stories most visible through manipulations of genre, plot, narrative voice, and point of view. Aspects of ideology examined include the Victorian and late-Victorian equation of masculinity with public rationality, mind, public achievement, and genius: and, on the other hand, the association of femininity with the body, passion, and private or domestic spaces. The thesis also considers some of the values and assumptions about gender implicit in nineteenth-century scientific thinking. Henry Handel Richardson has been viewed as a conservative writer, in both aesthetic and political terms. By contrast, I suggest that she resists the moral and representational codes of the realist or naturalist form, and that her uncompromising oppositional strategy achieves a number of radical results. It exposes and criticises the masculinist bias of certain representational methods; it offers new ways of representing female experience; and it insists that the private sphere must be treated also as a political space in which crucial power relationships are at work. My approach to Henry Handel Richardson???s fiction opens new ways to see her work as the product of a distinctive feminist consciousness.

Richard Wagner's Jesus von Nazareth

In addition to his renowned musical output, Richard Wagner produced a logorrhoeic prose oeuvre, including a dramatic sketch of the last weeks of the life of Jesus Christ entitled Jesus von Nazareth. Though drafted in 1848-1849, it was published only posthumously, and has therefore been somewhat neglected in the otherwise voluminous Wagnerian literature. This thesis first examines the origins of Jesus von Nazareth amidst the climate of revolution wherein it was conceived, ascertaining its place within Wagner’s own internal development and amongst the radical thinkers who influenced it. While Ludwig Feuerbach has traditionally been seen as the most prominent of these, this thesis examines Wagner’s sources more broadly. The thesis then summarizes and analyzes Jesus von Nazareth itself, particularly in terms of Wagner’s use of biblical scripture. The thesis demonstrates how his not infrequent misuse thereof constitutes one way in which Wagner transmogrifies Jesus as mutable lens through which his own ideology of social revolution is reflected. It also attempts to provide a critical assessment of the relative dramatic merits of Jesus von Nazareth and looks into Wagner’s ultimate decision not to complete the work. The thesis then briefly summarizes the changes that occurred in Wagner’s mature Christological outlook subsequent to his drafting of Jesus von Nazareth, attempting to concisely demonstrate some developments beyond Wagner’s well-known encounter with the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer. The thesis concludes with an evaluation of how Jesus von Nazareth informed Wagner’s general religious outlook and the extent to which this worldview is a productive one.
