Housing in a university situation: a study of student living

Fish, Hirsh L 14 April 2020 (has links)
Whilst travelling in the united states and Europe during 1969, I visited various university campuses. It was at Bochum being built at the time in Germany that I became especially aware of how separated the university community seemed to be from the society outside. Due it its remoteness I decided to examine and evaluate the relationships that exist between a university and its community preferably in some particular field of study. I drew the hypothesis that there existed a casual relationship between vehicular congestion and housing and that by providing more on campus housing a move towards alleviating the congestion problems would be made. In the gathering of information on residence provision, it became apparent that there exists an intense level f concern amongst our university administrators in regard to the correct provision of student housing and that much research work needed to be done in this field. Starting at the beginning of this year and after some considerable time, with much energy spent, the stages has been reached where the emerging problem of student housing can be defined. It is hoped that this thesis will make some contribution of the kind of housing out students want and need and that from this study a re-assessment of basic attitudes to the housing of our students can be made.

A Campus Connected: An Analysis of University Outdoor Spaces

Wilson, Alyson Skylar 06 April 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to analyze the evolution of outdoor renovations on East Tennessee State University’s campus by examining the effects these renovations have had on students and faculty, and then using this data to propose possible successful renovations to the remainder of the University Commons project. To complete this project, data was obtained through East Tennessee State University administrative faculty interviews, surveys of students residing in campus resident halls, and observations. By examining the impact on behavior, designers and developers are then able to successfully determine the factors that aid in positively influencing human behaviors. Design suggestions were then proposed for the future development of Ross Drive, Pride Walk, and the second phase of the University Commons.

Campus planning and design: exploring the programmatic elements involved in creating residential campus courtyards

Mahadin, Tariq 06 August 2011 (has links)
This thesis peruses the programmatic elements that are considered and implemented by designers and administrators and whether these elements contribute to creating successful residential campus courtyards in the southeast United States. A web-based survey questionnaire was administered to designers and administrators who have been involved in projects that were built in the region. Based on literature, site observations, and the results of the survey the researcher illustrates which program elements were the most important, as well as whether each element was implemented on site and why.

Ten Thoughts on Architecture

McLeod, John Huffman 28 July 1997 (has links)
In the face of technological developments, economic demands, and cultural desires that can encourage buildings devoid of character and permanence, we need to look for attributes of architecture that evoke strength and elude the undulations of time. / Master of Architecture

Indiana college campuses : an analysis of comfortable space planning

Meyer, Corrie A. January 2008 (has links)
This thesis examines Indiana university/college campuses comfortable spaces and the need for a comfortable campus. Campus planning is evolving to meet the environmental and social needs of its residents. Today, there is a driving need from students, parents, and communities to have a comfortable campus as well. Ball State University, the University of Indianapolis, and Ivy Tech Central Indiana Campus have been evaluated to determine if each campus succeeds in providing its users comfortable spaces. The majority of campuses studied, meet the requirements for a comfortable space design established in City Comforts, 2003. / Department of Urban Planning

Restorative campus landscapes: fostering education through restoration

Gutierrez, Josef January 1900 (has links)
Master of Landscape Architecture / Department of Landscape Architecture / Laurence A. Clement, Jr. / Restorative landscapes are a growing trend within health care environments and can have a lasting impact on people if applied within other settings, particularly higher education campuses. Their design captures the many healing qualities of nature that humans are instinctively attracted to (Heerwagen, 2011). Within restorative landscapes, people have been historically found to experience relief of stress, improved morale, and improved overall well-being (Barnes et al., 1999). While campus planning standards do consider the outdoor environment as an extension of the classroom, higher education campuses can do more to utilize the cognitive benefits of nature for students, faculty and staff. This project explores principles and theories of restorative landscape design, empirical psychological research, and campus design to develop a framework that facilitates the creation of restorative campus spaces on higher education campuses. In partnership with the Office of Design and Construction Management at the University of Kansas, the framework was subsequently applied through the design of the landscape for the Center for Design Research on the KU campus. In the context of current campus planning challenges, restorative landscape design is a potentially valuable strategy in strengthening the beneficial roles and efficacy of the campus landscape. This design project explores its application to envision places within a higher education campus that, along with other benefits, relieve stress for students, faculty and staff.
