The mid-eighteenth century navy from the perspective of Captain Thomas Burnett and his peers

McLeod, Anne Byrne January 2010 (has links)
This thesis explores the concerns of mid-eighteenth century naval captains through the careers of Captain Thomas Burnett and the cohort of thirty five officers who were posted captain in 1757 soon after the start of the Seven Years' War. A subsidiary cohort, that of the 129 lieutenants who were, like Burnett, first commissioned in 1744 is used as a control against which to measure the statistical worth of the smaller cohort. Examination of the day to day concerns of the captains has been made possible through the rich and varied resource of their letters to the Admiralty, which have hitherto been little used as a source by historians. Despite the formality of these letters not merely the concerns but also the personalities and characters of the writers are vividly conveyed. After tracing the career of Thomas Burnett this thesis examines the 1757 cohort and its progression to the rank of master and commander. At this point the correspondence with the Admiralty begins. The influences, 'interest' and formative experiences behind their appointments are considered. The duties of the mid-eighteenth century captain are outlined, as their relationship with the Admiralty is analysed and the extent to which they were kept under strict Admiralty control by precedent and financial scrutiny is demonstrated. All aspects of manning are shown to dominate the daily concerns of captains. The extent to which 'interest' or chance gave them the opportunity to display their professional expertise and increase their standing within the active naval corps is weighed. Tracking this cohort beyond the war into the years of peace and subsequent wars has revealed the extent to which the timing of being made post captain was crucial and that 'interest' was more significant than merit in accelerating and promoting active careers.

Peer Leadership: An Analysis of Athlete Captains on Collegiate Sports Teams

Banducci, Amanda M. 01 January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to identify specific leadership behaviors of team captains and to determine how perceived leadership behaviors influence teammates’ perception of cohesion and satisfaction. Last, the study will demonstrate the relationship between perceived team captain leadership and team success mediated by perceived cohesion and satisfaction, while controlling for athletic ability. The team captains and coaches, from division III teams, were interviewed and team mates were given three surveys: Athlete Leadership Survey (ALS), Group Environment Questionnaire (GEQ) and an Athlete Satisfaction Questionnaire (ASQ), measuring perceived leadership, cohesion, and satisfaction respectively. Statistically significant results of two bivariate regression analyses between ASL and ASQ, and team success (defined by winning percentage), suggest a strong positive relationship between perceived team captain leadership and team success. Yet, the effect was decreased when mediated by perceived satisfaction.

A model for the development of women in construction in the Limpopo Province of South Africa

Jonas, Sminny Nozimangaliso Minah 18 September 2017 (has links)
PhDRDV / Instutute for Rural Development / The overall purpose of this study was to describe a model for the development of women in construction in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. To achieve this purpose two phases were used i.e., the two stage empirical phase that employed a mixed method research process to identify and understand the development needs of women in construction and a theory-generation phase, which consisted of 8 stages that interfaced with phase 1 The population of the study were stakeholders in the construction industry namely, women contractors who are active grade 2 (registered as such on the CIDB register of contractors) and owner-managers in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, representative of the board of the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA), the Independent Development Trust (IDT), the Council for the Built Environment (CBE) and the South African Women in Construction (SAWIC). Qualitative data was collected through in-depth one-on-one interviews, whilst quantitative data was gathered through administering questionnaires. Six (6) stakeholders participated in the interviews and out of the targeted 167 in the CIDB register, 120 completed the questionnaires. The results of the empirical phase were subjected to the 8-step method of theory generation according to Chinn and Kramer (2011:152- 205). A conceptual framework for the model for development of rural women in construction was organized by applying the proposed elements of a practice theory according to Dickhoff, James & Wiedenbach (1968) and Barnum (1994). The theoretical evaluation of a model was done utilizing Chinn and Kramer (2011:205) criteria for evaluation of a theory. Guidelines to operationalize the theory were also described as well as recommendations and conclusion.

An analysis of the impact of changes in the officer education system on the Army's transient, holdee, and student account

Hoffmann, Arthur J., Jr. 06 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / The United States Army is making changes in the Officer Education System for 2nd lieutenants to majors. These changes affect the size of Transient, Holdee and Student account (THS). The current Officer Basic Course changes to a two-phased system called Basic Officer Leadership Course (BOLC II and III). A twenty-week Captains' Career Course (CCC) replaces the current CCC and Combined Arms and Service Staff School (CAS3). Currently, Command and General Staff College (CGSC), where 50% of a year group attends resident CGSC, shifts to a two-phased approach with a Common Core Course and a Career Field Qualification Course. This thesis includes an Excel simulation model producing monthly predictions for six years for officers in THS account because of schooling. Assignments are Permanent Change of Station (PCS), Temporary Duty (TDY) Enroute, or TDY and Return. Therefore, if 30% of majors attend Officer Education System (OES) as a PCS or TDY Enroute, the THS account sees a man-year increase of between 166 and 552 personnel. For CCC, if 30% of captains attend CCC as PCS/TDY Enroute, THS shows a man-year decrease of between 1162 and 1171. When the new BOLC education system was simulated, the THS account showed a man-year increase of between 172 and 242 when compared to the current OBC. / Army Deputy Chief of Staff, G-1 / Major, United States Army

Captains of the Sands is a realist narrative that deals with the adventures of a group of street children who survives by committing crimes in the streets of Salvador. Since they live in an old warehouse, the boys of the band, led by Pedro Bala, are known by the nickname "captains of the sands". Jorge Amado is known as an advocate for the causes of the poor, excluded by society. This work is a lyrical testimony and romance of protest, bringing social and psychological elements that reflect the entire socio-political instability of the 30s. When creating his stories, the author, a political activist, defends the ideological principles of the left, and, in a way, the narrator works as the author's delegate. Despite all the violence and the rogue behavior of the minors, a close reading reveals that the source of these problems is the neglect of the state itself, the repressive and violent police, and the reformatory, a true hell of torture and misery. Thus, the reactions of these adolescents are nothing more than a vehicle of harsh revenge against the violence they have suffered. The novel analysis is based on theoretical and methodological proposals of Critical Linguistics ― which gives ideological significance to any aspect of linguistic structure ― and of the Systemic Functional Grammar, whose approach to language as a construer of three distinct functions or metafunctions ― namely, Ideational (subject), Interpersonal (interactivity) and textual (internal organization and communicative nature of a text), allows the relationship between lexicogrammatical choices made in the microstructure of the text, with the macrostructure of ideology and power relations. The research should answer the following questions: (a) What choices in the Transitivity System contribute to enable the social criticism in Captains of the Sands? (b) What choices in the Appraisal framework perform this function? / The purpose of this master thesis is the examination of social criticism in the novel Captains of the Sands by Jorge Amado.

Lalancette, Louis 06 1900 (has links)
In 1683, the French monarchy decided to send three companies of infantry of the Marine to quell the Iroquois, who were waging war against the colony that was then under Marine jurisdiction. Unable to put an end to the threat, the king sent more companies whose officers had Marine or infantry experience. The war, now extended to the British colonies forced the Marine to station troops permanently in Canada. They called by the administrators : troupes de la Marine. Another sign that this colonial army had become permanent is the opening of the officer corps to the local nobility. A few decades later, the officier corps nearly entirely consisted of Canadian noblemen. Some of the officers, most of them born in Canada, have been the subject of biographies. Some historians have studied the military noblesse as a social group. The military career of the officers of the troupes de la Marine has not, however, been studied has a whole. The captains, that is, the men who reached the top of the hierarchy of the troupes de la Marine before 1739, are the subject of this analysis. The study examines the main stages of their colonial military experience, while taking into account the officers birthplace, so as to highlight certain trends of Ancien-Regime society.

Les mutations successives d'un espace enclavé et déshérité : Industrialisation et désindustrialisation dans la vallée du Rimbach du XVIIIe siècle à nos jours / The successive changes of an enclosed and deprived area : Industrialization and deindustrialization in the Rimbach

Risacher, Bertrand 16 December 2010 (has links)
Within a restricted geographical setting, the Rimbach valley, this doctoral thesis studies in an exhaustive way all the aspects of an economic and social evolution, marked by the phenomenon of industrialization, from the 18th century to our days. This thesis has thus permitted to discover a local area of industrialization which reinforces the diversity of the French economic development. This research is restricted to the Rimbach valley, but by replacing this area within the whole Alsatian area, we can bring new information about pre-industrialization, the process of industrialization and its specificity in relation to the great industry in Haut-Rhin, the economic evolution confronted to the problem of borders (because of their changes in 1870, 1919, 1939 and 1945), the great industrial transformation since 1945, but also confronted to the social disruptions, the political consequences and the environmental impact. The Rimbach valley, to a small scale, has been the scene of all these evolutions. This thesis brings the irrefutable evidence that such a tiny microcosm is the perfect reflection of the varying fortunes of industrialization. The contribution brought in this thesis is therefore indisputable in a more accurate knowledge of a Vosges valley with its true specificities. From the economic history point of view, it highlights methods of productive continuity to a local scale, which show with evidence that there are capacities of local action often hidden by more all-embracing tendencies. Finally, it destroys the monolithic and linear vision of an industrializing, de-industrializing and re-industrializing Europe, on new grounds, showing the significance of transitions. Therefore, the Rimbach valley deserves its true place in the great European industrial story, and a really particular place in certain respects.

Percepçäo de comandantes de Boeing 767 da aviaçäo civil brasileira sobre as repercussöes das condiçöes de trabalho na sua saúde / Perception of Boeing 767 commander of the brazilian civil aviation on the repercussions of the work conditions in your health

The human body presents a rhythmicity of biochemical, physiological and behavioral events throughout the 24 hours of a day. It means that this body has different peculiarities during the day and others at night. This circadian rhythmicity is closely linked to “zeitgebers” (external synchronizers): sleep/wake cycle, social rhythms, shiftwork and so on. One of the most important characteristics within the aviation profession is the alternation of shifts, which means that the aeronauts have to develop their professional activities at different hours of the day and night. This inversion of work periods in lieu of resting ones results in rhythmicity changes. The aim of this study was to investigate the perception of Brazilian civil aviation captains and the influences of their type of work conditions upon their health. The data collection was made using questionnaires which were distributed to all Rio de Janeiro-based Boeing 767 captains employed by VARIG and Transbrasil during the research period. From all the 87 questionnaires sent, 25 returned. The results showed that flight captains` working conditions present several and serious implications on their health. The fatigue, the changes both in the sleep/wake cycle and in the eating habits and the deleterious effects on social events were the aspects cited by the captains as being the most affected ones causing consequences like sleepiness, gastro-intestinal disturbances, relationship difficulties, among others. In order to minimize these symptoms the captains developed some strategies like sleeping as soon as they arrive at their destination, practicing some physical activities and following the local time, which are used very often and successfully.
