Side-Channel Monitoring of Contactless Java Cards

Berkes, Jem 21 January 2008 (has links)
Smart cards are small, portable, tamper-resistant computers used in security-sensitive applications ranging from identification and access control to payment systems. Side-channel attacks, which use clues from timing, power consumption, or even electromagnetic (EM) signals, can compromise the security of these devices and have been an active research area since 1996. Newer ``contactless'' cards communicate using radio frequency (RF), without physical contact. These contactless smart cards are sometimes grouped with radio frequency identification (RFID) devices in popular usage of the term. This thesis investigates devices that use the ISO 14443 (proximity card) protocol, a large class of contactless/RFID devices. Although contactless smart cards are increasingly common, very few reproducible practical attacks have been published. Presently, there are no known documented side-channel attacks against contactless Java Cards (open standard multi-application cards) using generic unmodified hardware. This thesis develops a research-friendly platform for investigating side-channel attacks on ISO 14443 contactless smart cards. New techniques for measurement and analysis, as well as the first fully documented EM side-channel monitoring procedure, are presented for a contactless Java Card. These techniques use unmodified, commercial off-the-shelf hardware and are both practical and broadly applicable to a wide range of ISO 14443 devices, including many payment cards and electronic passports.

Investigating the functional interaction of transcription regulator card of mycobacterium tuberculosis with ribonucleic acid polymerase

Mapotsane, Thuso January 2013 (has links)
Magister Scientiae - MSc / Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). TB mainly affects lungs of patients but other parts of the body can also be affected. It kills approximately 2 million people annually. HIV/AIDS and drug resistance make TB difficult to control. Mtb CarD protein forms a physiological complex with Ribonucleic Acid Polymerase (RNAP). This complex causes Mtb to undergo dormancy rendering it difficult to control using current antibiotics. CarD and a size-reduced subunit β1 (denoted β1m for “minimized”) of Thermus thermophilus RNAP, in which the central domain has been replaced by a Gly-Gly linker, were produced and purified using affinity nickel nitrilotriaceticacid and glutathione-Stransferase (GST) affinity chromatography techniques respectively. CarD N terminal domain (CarDN) was generated from CarD by inserting a stop codon by site directed mutagenesis. CarD was stabilised by adding 5 % (v/v) glycerol to PBS pH 7.4 ensuring protein stability of up to 67 days rather than 2 days without glycerol. CarDN was stable in PBS pH 7.4 without addition of glycerol. This suggests that the CarD C terminal domain may be responsible for CarD instability. To further purify the proteins both anion exchange and gel permeation chromatography techniques were used. CarD and CarDN degrade immediately after anion exchange potentially because of the high ion concentration which partially unfolds the protein making it prone to proteolytic cleavage. GST-pull down assays were used to demonstrate complex formation between RNAP β1m and both CarD and CarDN confirming that complex formation is dependent on the N-terminal domain of CarD.

České zelené karty v kontextu imigrační politiky EU / Czech green cards in context of the immigration policy of the EU

Kopecká, Vladimíra January 2008 (has links)
Green card is a new type of residence permit within the territory of the Czech republic designed for foreigners from selected third countries. It entitles its holder to residence as well as work. The concept functions in the Czech republic since 1.1.2009. This thesis sets the Czech project of green cards into wilder context of the immigration policy of the EU and examines whether Czech green cards are compatible with similar system of EU blue cards which is not yet running on but it is in process of approval. The thesis also investigates if there are similar systems already working in other EU member states and compares Czech green cards to selected systems of green cards of Germany and Denmark. It also deals with the question whether the Czech system has so far been successful, what are its strengths, weaknesses and prospects of the future.

Optimalizace bezpečnostních algoritmů pro smartkarty / Optimization of security algorithms for smart cards

Bartoňová, Veronika January 2011 (has links)
In this diploma thesis I dealt with proposal of optimization security algorithms calculations, that will be implemented on smartcards. This project is based on knowledge of modular arithmetic, that is used in many encryption like public keys, digital signatures and has function. The result of this project is a design of changes for accelerate the security algorithms calculations.

Bezkontaktní mikropočítačová karta jako skrýš pro geokešing / Contactless microcomputer card as a hiding place for geocaching

Vertaľ, Damián January 2021 (has links)
This master’s thesis focuses on the possibility of using contactless smart cards as an electronic hiding place in an activity known as Geocaching. The first part explains the theoretical knowledge about cards, smart card programming, the development of android applications for communication with the smart card using the NFC interface and usage of eliptic curves to sign digital messages. The second part is dedicated to the design of a Java card application and an Android application, which are able to communicate
