Leon Caron and the music profession in Australia

Smart, Bonnie Jane January 2003 (has links) (PDF)
Leon Francis Victor Caron (1850-1905) was one of the major figures in Australian nineteenth-century opera and orchestral circles. He was a well-known and well-liked public figure, regarded with respect and affection by musicians and audiences alike. Little has been written concerning Caron’s career. Given the amount he contributed to the Australian stage, an assessment of his importance within the music profession is warranted. Most areas of Caron’s life are, as yet, totally unexplored; it falls outside the ambit of this thesis to present every detail pertaining to his varied and extensive musical career. Nevertheless, new information about a selection of Caron’s ventures is drawn upon here for the first time. Much of this material is used to examine the impact of Caron’s conducting on the orchestral profession in Melbourne and Sydney. Many of Caron’s performances (orchestral or otherwise) often featured the popular music of the day. The popular aspect of Caron as a composer is also considered, with particular reference to the incredibly successful pantomime Djin Djin. An examination of Caron’s performances gives great insight not only into the part he played in the wider profession; but it also sheds light on orchestral standards, performance practices and public tastes of the time. His contribution to the music profession in nineteenth-century Australia is extremely significant.

Jorge Caron: uma trajetória / Jorge Caron: a trajectory

Ruggiero, Amanda Saba 09 February 2007 (has links)
During the years of 1950 and 1960, the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning of Sao Paulo (FAU-USP) had been a center of ethics and esthetics principles, guided by the master João Batista Vilanova Artigas, architect and urban planner known as a diffuser, an important professor and great leader of the modern movement in Brazil. The architect Jorge Caron (1936/2000) represented the second generation of the modern architect idealized by this group from FAU-USP. He worked as an architect and urban planner, educator, landscape worker, designer, scenographist, movie director and cultural producer. He was indoubtly an important professional, having worked intensely for developing a national culture. In this work, we analyze Jorge Caron professional carrier based on the recovery and the systematic study of his proposals. We identify the interlocutors, the conflicts and dialogs established in this context, aiming to reveal the choices and strategies also translated in his architecture.

Processus de guérison par les actions rituelles et l'image archétypique : témoignages d'un parcours avec Ryszard Nieoczym (LeTHAL)

Caron, Annie 23 November 2018 (has links)
This creation-research project is a paratheatrical research process experienced through workshops with LeTHAL Theatre (Le Theatre de l’Homme Actor’s Laboratorium) between 2006 and 2012. This Master’s thesis aims at deepening the questioning about the healing potential of theatre, more specifically archetypal images and ritual actions. The following document describes the elements (the universals of myth, theatre and ritual) that have had the greatest healing potential in my process of looking for a state of balance. This thesis includes testimonials : the creation project Auto-autopsie, and selected excerpts from my journal of experiences with the theatre master Ryszard Nieoczym.

Through-thickness compression testing and theory of carbon fibre composite materials

Thompson, Luke Francis January 2011 (has links)
This study investigates the through-thickness behaviour of carbon/epoxy laminates. A through-thickness compression test regime was conducted utilising three specimen designs, which are waisted, hollow cylindrical and cubic specimens. An assessment and comparison of each specimen is given regarding their advantages and disadvantages in characterising the through-thickness response of [+45/-45/90/0]s quasi-isotropic AS4/8552 carbon/epoxy laminates. A finite element (FE) study of the three specimens is presented which results in specimen geometries that provided a macroscopically uniform stress response throughout the gauge length whilst also minimising other features such as stress concentrations. Further to the final geometries being presented, the method of manufacture for the laminate and machining processes for each of the specimens is given. A mesoscopic FE study is presented relating to the free-edge effects induced by through-thickness loading in quasi-isotropic laminates. The results presented show that free-edge effects will be present in the test specimens and will have a larger overall impact on the hollow cylindrical specimen. The free-edge effects also increase the stress concentrations present in the corners of the waisted and cubic specimens. Characteristic stress strain curves are presented for each specimen with strain data taken from post yield strain gauges attached to the specimens. The extracted initial Young's modulus Ez and Poisson's ratios vzx and vzy show a small variation between specimens. The strength values for the three specimens vary greatly with the waisted specimen being the strongest and cylindrical specimen the weakest, indicating that the chosen specimen geometry dominates failure. The experimental data will be used for test case 12 in the Second World Wide Failure Exercise (WWFE-II). A study is presented to predict the effective elastic properties of Z-pinned laminates. The materials under consideration are UD and [0/90]s cross-ply AS4/3501-6 carbon/epoxy laminates. Estimates on the effective properties are provided by two FE approaches and two analytical bounding approaches; namely Voigt and Reuss bounds and Walpole's bounding theory. The two FE approaches are based on extreme assumptions about the in-plane fibre volume fraction in the presence of Z-pins and provide a tight range of values in which the real result should lie. Furthermore, whilst the bounding methods are simple and in the case of Young's moduli produce very wide bounds the selection of the suitable bound result can lead to a good estimate in comparison with the FE data. Typically the best bounding method result for each elastic property is within 10% of the FE predictions.
