Carvallo Elizondo, Esteban Jorge January 2019 (has links)

Predictors of Attendance and the Impact of Attendance on Outcomes for a Parenting Programme in Two Southeast Asian Countries

Janowski, Roselinde Katharina 29 January 2021 (has links)
Background: Children living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) experience alarmingly high rates of maltreatment, frequently at the hands of caregivers. Group-based parenting programmes show promise for reducing and preventing child maltreatment, as well as for improving positive parenting, child behaviour problems, and caregiver mental health. However, parenting programmes can only benefit families if caregivers participate in them. Using secondary data, this study thus aimed to 1) identify factors that affect attendance and 2) investigate the impact of attendance on outcomes within two randomised controlled trials of Parenting for Lifelong Health (PLH) for Young Children for caregivers of children aged 2-9 years in Thailand (N = 120) and 2-6 years in the Philippines (N = 120). The interventions were delivered within existing service delivery systems in both countries, over eight weekly sessions (Thailand) or 12 sessions every second week (Philippines). Method: To address the first aim of this study, multivariable logistic regression models with robust sandwich estimators were used to examine family baseline characteristic as predictors of caregiver attendance in sessions. An exploratory approach was taken to test a range of factors that have previously been linked to attendance in parenting programmes, including economic and educational, social and health, parenting and child behaviour, and sociodemographic characteristics. To address the second aim, caregiver self-reports and observational assessments (Thailand only) from baseline, post-test, and follow-up were analysed using complier average causal effect (CACE) analyses to test the impact of attendance variability on the primary outcomes of child maltreatment, as well as secondary outcomes of positive parenting, dysfunctional parenting, child behaviour problems, and caregiver mental health. Results: Caregivers in Thailand attended 82.3% of sessions while those in the Philippines attended 61.8%. Overall, few baseline factors were significantly associated with attendance. In Thailand, caregivers who were less educated and those who were older were significantly more likely to attend sessions. In the Philippines, caregivers who were less healthy, those that who used more emotional abuse, and those who had boys rather than girls were significantly more likely to attend. Notably, caregivers who experienced higher rates of intimate partner violence significantly attended 8% fewer sessions in the Philippines. A comparison of CACE estimates to intention-to-treat estimates at post-test and at follow-up showed greater benefits of the intervention amongst caregivers who attended more sessions. Specifically, the strongest intervention effects were found for caregivers who attended at least 75% of the programme. Conclusion: This study showed no evidence that disadvantages related to lower socio-economic status were associated with attendance, suggesting that it is possible for vulnerable families in LMICs to attend parenting programmes. However, developing retention strategies that target subgroups who are at greater risk of missing sessions is especially important as higher attendance at sessions is positively related to greater improvements in caregiver and child outcomes.

SuccessVis - Visualizing Academic Impact

Yau, Calvin, Surakitbanharn, Chittayong, Tee, Jun Xiang, Ebert, David 25 January 2019 (has links)
SuccessVis is a flexible web-based visual analytics system for presenting and evaluating academic impact. The system is developed for stakeholders who have little training in visualization techniques and have invested in academic programs, specifically in the VACCINE (Visual Analytics for Command, Control and Interoperability Environments) Center, to understand the impact of the center and, thus, better evaluate their future investments in academic research centers. The system is capable of displaying metrics indicating the total impact of the academic research center and allows comparisons between the impact of individual projects, and the dynamics and evolvement of the impact. In this paper, we present the design process of the system, the final product displaying the impact of the VACCINE Center over the past eight years, and discuss the challenges in visualizing academic impact.

Diaz Sandoval, Joan Manuel, Castro Moran, Rolando Pablo 10 1900 (has links)
Tesis

Identification of Economic Value Drivers Impacting Operational Cash Flows in the Casual Theme Restaurant Industry

Chung, Yea Sun 24 May 2005 (has links)
The importance of environmental analysis in the strategic management process and the effects of economic value drivers on firm or industry performance have been discussed conceptually and empirically by researchers in corporate failure, and in the areas of finance, accounting, strategic management, and the hospitality industry in the past. The belief is that the more systematic and frequent the scanning performed by managers the higher the chances of improving the firm's or industry's performance. The present study is an attempt to identify economic value drivers that impact the casual theme sector of the restaurant industry and to ascertain the degree of the impact during the period 1994-2003. The statistical analysis was based on time series data, using Cross Correlation, Granger Causality, and Multivariate Regression. An exhaustive range of economic value drivers within ten categories were tested: commodity market; foreign currency market; labor market; inflation; stock market; national income and output; interest rate; government revenue, spending, debt, and taxes; money supply; and consumer spending. The unit of analysis was done at the industry level, and an index of operational cash flows of the casual theme sector of the restaurant industry was developed. Economic value drivers within the categories of commodity markets, labor markets, inflation, stock market, national input/output, government revenue/spending/debt/taxes, money markets, and consumer spending indicated co-movements with and causality to the index of operational cash flows per unit in the casual theme restaurant industry. A high variance in the operational cash flows in the casual theme restaurant industry was explained by a set of economic value drivers within commodity markets, inflation, and labor markets. In broad, practical terms, the study intends to support the importance of assessing the economic environment for better performance of the restaurant industry and to provide food service managers with a conceptual model to understand the unanticipated effects on the performance of existing or new strategies. In real terms, the model and set of economic value drivers in the model would help them decide what kinds of action or investment in a firm or industry's weakness should be taken to buffer future operational risks against value drivers within economic environment. / Master of Science
