_______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The immune system plays a decisive role in defending an animal against attack by pathogens and parasites. Its activation and maintenance demand nutritional and energetic costs, and may result in a trade-off with other demanding activities during stressfull periods. To verify this, I compared both body and immunological conditions of Elaenia cristata during non reproductive rainy season, non reproductive dry season and reproductive season. Elaenia cristata showed a typical stress leukocyte profile (decreased lymphocyte number, increased heterophil number and H:L ratio) during the dry season, but not at others seasons. However, it had no significant variation on body mass index (residual from the linear regression of body mass on tarsus length) among the seasons. As well, I compared both immunological and body conditions of E. cristata and E. chiriquensis (a migrant congener) during the reproductive season. I did not find differences for E. cristata, but E. chiriquensis starts the season with a stress leukocyte profile, reverses the condition at the intermediate months and returns to the stress profile at the end of the breeding season, before migration. I found weak correlations between immune condition and body condition for both species. I also compared immunological condition of E. cristata at different molt stages and I did not find significant variation. The results showed that leukocyte profile had changed due to stress conditions. It is apparently influenced by drought in E. cristata and by migration in E. chiriquensis, but not by reproductive condition in both species. The mounting of the immune system had no trade-off with molting, and both processes were not related to body mass.

Zoneamento, similaridade e diversidade do estrato herbáceo-arbustivo de duas veredas no Distrito Federal

Santos, Francisco Ferreira de Miranda 09 August 2012 (has links)

_______________________________________________________________________________________ OVERVIEW / The palm swamp is a phytophisiognomy of the Cerrado biome, predominantly herbaceous and shruby, located in headwater drainages and rich in biodiversity, having the mauritia palm as characteristic species. They occur in soil that is waterlogged during most of the year, where the water flows slowly, and in steep sloped valleys if geologically recent swamps. The degree of siltation is variable, as is the surrounding vegetation and topography, which is woodier when in advanced sucessional stage and has few young specimens of mauritia palms, due to changes in drainage. The above variations plus soil texture, water table depth and edaphic characteristics, related to soil nutrients, affect zonation in the swamp (defined as floristic separation in border, middle and center zones), besides species similarity and diversity between the palm swamps. Two palm swamps were studied in Brazil’s Federal District (DF). The study areas are slightly less than 30 km apart. The first, a palm swamp in Brasilia’s National Forest (FLONA), occurs in a steep slope and has a permanent marsh in the middle. The second area, located in the Ecological Station of Brasilia’s Botanical Garden (EEJBB), has only a slight slope. Part of EEJBB is covered by Trembleya parviflora, where the herb-subshrub layer is homogeneous and was thus named “trembleial”. Besides all differences, the EEJBB swamp has murundum mounds through most of the area, resulting in a particular topography. The two areas are, therefore, different in their environmental characteristics. The goals were to verify the differences in floristic diversity and similarity of the herb-subshrub layer of the two swamps and to test for the occurrence of floristic zonation. The results were confronted with the described characteristics that presumably affect zonation, diversity difference and similarity. Both areas were sampled during the rainy season. Vegetation sampling was carried through the line interception method. Difference in diversity was tested with Hutchingson’s t test and similarity with the Chao-Sørensen index. Analysis of environmental variables was carried through a principal component analysis and soil data collected based on standard procedures. Detection of floristic zonation was made with a cluster analysis, sorting border, middle and center lines in advance (besides the “trembleial” zone in the EEJBB swamp) in both swamps. In the EEJBB swamp (where zonation was confirmed) a non metric multidimensional scaling analysis supplemented the results, testing the distribution of the most abundant species in relation to the environmental characteristics. Also in EEJBB, the most abundant species were sorted by water table depth intervals and compared with the abundance of species that occurred in another palm swamp in the region (Águas Emendadas Ecological Station). Pearson correlations for clay percentage, cation exchange capacity, water table depth and soil organic matter were tested for species with IV (relative frequency plus relative cover) higher than 8,5 in the EEJBB and compared with the other swamp. The diversities were different (H’= 3,93 and 3,02; p<0,01, t=13,50) and had a high similarity (Chao-SØrensen=65,36%± 0,00). The least diverse swamp was EEJBB, due to the homogeneous “trembleial”, dominated by Lagenocarpus rigidus, also e permanent marsh and due to the murundun mounds that favored the adapted to a deeper water table. Water table depth explained most of the two swamps, if combined with cation exchange capacity and other um. Soil organic matter, taken in isolation, was responsible by the tions values with absolute species cover and the correlations were st area. The sample lines of the two swamps formed distinct groups in howing that they were different. This also confirmed the similarity there was no correspondence of floristic zones between the two palm s formed in the cluster analysis (trembleial and the center zone in the eir own pattern of species composition, this was also confirmed by the sional scaling. These same species are related, inside each line/zone, edaphic characteristics such as cation exchange capacity, thus the ic and related to environmental characteristics. There are similarities pth classes the species occurred with the same classes in another palm l District (Águas Emendadas Ecological Station). The principal wed that the two swamps are different according to the environmental ifferences between the areas were small and the overall differences of between the swamps possibly explain the diversity differences and the owever, there is a possibility that different sucessional stages are erences. More studies are needed to a profound comprehension of the subject.

_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / In the Cerrado, wildfires are more common in the transition between dry and wet season, and are caracterized by small areas affected and the low severity. These disturbances change the landscape and the faunistic and floristic composition of the enviroment. Under intermediary intensities and frequencies, the fire can play an important role in maintaining environmental diversity. However, human actions have changed natural fire regimes in many biomes. For this reason, it`s important understand the fire effects on different environment components. Some species or communities can be good models for researches about the fire effects, because they respond to differences in fire regimes. The termitaria can be considered potential ecological models, because they includes a great diversity of species, are abundant in certain areas and are related to the escape of animais during front fire advance. This work has investigated the effects of different fire regimes on termitaria associated fauna, by showing the way that termitarian caracteristics influence the abundance of associated fauna. Active collects have been made, and fisic caracteristics have been measured in 130 termitarians of the species Armitermes euamignathus, Cornitermes cumulans and Nasutitermes spp. The collects ocurred in five plots of campo sujo in central Brazil submited to different treatments with prescribed burns: biennial in the beggining of the dry season, bienal in the middle of the dry season, bienal in the end of the dry season, quadrienal in the middle of the dry season and control, which is without burning for more than 20 years. The data were analysed and compared at order level and, in the spiders` case, at family level. The fauna found was comprised by 22 orders and 21 families, with greater values of richness and abundance in the termitaria of A. euamignathus, and the lowest values at Nausitermes spp. termitarians. The most important mound termite caracteristic for the occurence of associated fauna was the nest`s height and the number of holes. Stronger associations were found between some taxa of associated fauna and termitaria of different species. For example, there is an association between spiders, harvestmen (order Opiliones) and scorpions to A. euamignathus; and beetles in mature and larval stage to C. cumulans. The differences between each kind of termitaria were statisticaly significative. No significative difference was found between the four treatments with fire, demonstrating that the differences between the fire regimes used did not play perceptible influence on the termitaria associated fauna in campo limpo. However, there is the possibility that such result has been due to the differences between the different kinds of termitaria studied, which hid the variation due to fire regimes. Although there was no difference between the fire regimes, there was great difference between these treatments and the control treatment, showing that the occurence of fire plays a role in maintaining the diversity of the termitaria associated fauna in campo limpo areas, and that complete supression of fire can change the environment and reduce the diversity of this faunistic component.

_______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The Stripe-tailed Yellow-Finch Sicalis citrina (Emberizidae) is a poorly known species with a wide range in South America. The first chapter of this study details its breeding biology. In the second chapter ecological hypothesis on the factors that possibly affect nest survival are tested. Estimates of daily survival rates and reproductive success are given as well in the last chapter. Nest search and monitoring were conducted between January and May 2007 and started after the beginning of raining season. Stripe-tailed Yellow-finches breed in abandoned mining pits in the Brasília National Park from December to May, most frequently from January to March. Its life history traits are quite similar to most Neotropical Emberizidae passerines. Eggs, from two-three, are laid in an open cup nest built mainly in Pteridophytae shrubs (Dicranopteris flexuosa). Incubation lasts 12 days and nestlings take 13 days to fledge. Nest apparent success was 26%. Daily survival rates and overall success using Mayfield’s method were 0.94 and 21%, respectively. Overall nest survival probabilities varied greatly as a function of substrate (plant species) and time of breeding season, being greater in nests built in Pteridophytae late in the breeding season. Daily survival rates also decreases as the nests get older. Edge effects did not influence nest survival. Key-words: Stripe-tailed Yellow-finch, Sicalis citrina, life history traits, nest survival, Brazilian savanna.

________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The cerradão features among the 11 vegetation types described for the Cerrado biome, in which the floristic composition results from the general species, savannah and forestal vegetation colonization, however, frequently more similar with cerrado sensu stricto (s.s.). In the present study, the floristic and the structure of woody vegetations from cerradão (Cd) and cerrado s.s. (Cr) adjacents located at Pequizeiros Ecological Park, DF (PEP-DF) were evaluated. It was also assessed the magnitude of the physico-chemical properties effects of the soil and the topography on vegetation by regression models with spatial modeling. For that, 10 plots of 20 x 50 m at Cd and other 10 at Cr were allocated, where all woody individuals with DAS30cm ≥ 5 cm were sampled and the soil samples collected. With these data, the phytosociological parameters and the diversity were computed with Shannon’s index (H’). In general, the results presented values included in the variation so far registered in other studies in the bioma and reflected high floristic diversity. However, the richness and the basal area Cd and the basal area Cr were higher in terms of the variation range that has already been registered in other studies. Fabaceae, Vochysiaceae and Myrtaceae were the families that played a major contribution for the richness. Emmotum nitens (Benth.) Miers was the most important in Cd and Qualea parviflora Mart in Cr. The high quantity of exclusive species at Cd and the dissimilarity general pattern with others in bioma indicated large heterogeneity in the woody flora distribution and reinforced that the floristic composition of cerradão includes general species and is strongly influenced by the nearby phytophysiognomies. The multivariate analysis with the TWINSPAN and NMDS showed floristic-structural gradients and assisted in the understanding of the distribution of some species. The multiple regression models adjusted to evaluate the floristic density, dominance, diversity and composition variation expressed statistically valid and indicated that the floristic-structural gradients is influenced by topography, as well as by the texture and soils fertility.

In tropical vegetation, flowering plants have phenological patterns influenced by biotic and environmental factors and that can be studied using herbarium specimens. Herbarium databasing has accelerated the use of such data, providing baseline information for studies with many kinds of different objectives, particularly for regions under pressure from humans, such as the Cerrado. Herbaria are large databases that preserve geographic, taxonomic, ecologic and phenologic information and such records are very useful to study long-term tendencies in phenology. In the last few years, phenological studies have become very popular as a key to predicting how biological systems will respond to climate changes, since understanding what controls plant phenology is essential to try and understand possible future changes in climate and weather. It is becoming clear that unprecedented changes in climatic patterns are underway and that the increase in temperature is interfering in the distribution, physiology, phenology and in situ adaptation of many species, as well as modifying the hydrological cycle, therefore changing rainfall patterns. One of the objectives of this study was to develop a mathematical index capable of predicting the phenological behaviour of plant species based on large databases. As a result, a formula was devised and an algorithm was incorporated into BRAHMS that calculates an index we have called the Phenological Predictability Index (PPI), that calculates the probability of registering a phenological event in the field based on herbarium, literature and dated images. Our study focused on a representative sample of Angiosperm species that are common the Distrito Federal, Brazil. Along with phenological scoring of herbarium data, 22 species were monitored twice a month in the field between 2011 and 2013. Seven species that were studied between 2000 e 2003 also in the Distrito Federal were included in the analyses. Our field study (as well as other published studies) permitted us to calculate average individual constancy of the phenological event so that contingency could be deduced. Results obtained in the field were compared with those predicted by the PPI index. Peak flowering month was congruent with maximum monthly probability for c. 90% of species and peak fruiting month was congruent with maximum monthly probability in 50% of species. Scoring events in the field was 100% successful for visits in peak probability months (buds, flowers and fruit). Considering the existence of geographic variability in phenology, we suggest that the herbarium records used to calculate PPI are within the same climatic region where the study or collecting expedition is planned to occur. Lack of success in PPI prediction of an event may be due to the fact that it is supra-anual (mast species) or event predictability is very low, meaning it is highly plastic, presumably responding to year-to-year climatic variation or to local conditions. A second aim of this study is to improve knowledge of patterns and identify possible anomalies in year-to-year climatic variability. This study used geometric morphometrics, specifically the Thin-Plate Spline (TPS) technique, in the study of decendial climatic variables – minimum temperature, maximum temperature and precipitation – on a local scale and over a time scale of 50 years, thus allowing climatic data for several decades to be compared and putatively climatically similar years to be identified. The use of geometric morphometrics in climate studies is unprecedented and the technique was useful to quantify the decendial climatic variability even when it was small. Precipitation showed the highest variability by far with the highest value found in the second decendium of November. Maximum temperatures showed maximum variability during the wet season and minimum temperatures during the dry season. UPGMA was used to group years using the three variables, but bootstrap values were below 50, suggesting 50 years might be insufficient for pattern formation. However, UPGMA based on precipitation was successful in grouping El Niño and La Niña years. Probability theory was used to explore the degree of flowering predictability and opportunism in the Distrito Federal and investigate possible relationships with climatic variables, such as temperature, precipitation and photoperiod. We conclude that the behaviour of this sample of a diversified and important group of common Cerrado plants studied – as herbarium records – is useful in the study of plant phenology, if the objective is to elucidate behaviour and patterns in response to environmental variables. The identification of climatic variability using short time (such as 10 days), as done using the Thin-Plate Spline technique, is of great importance in vegetation studies, as is the distinction of years with La Niña and El Niño phenomena. For best results, morphometric analyses should be restricted to seasons, such as the rainy season, when major climatic variability occurs in the Distrito Federal, or in the months that preceed the desired phenological events. Few species appear to be independent of environmental stimulus to flower, and many of them may respond to a complex pattern of stimuli such as precipitation, temperature and photoperiod, combined with endogenous rhythms or after burning. Using PPI as a means of quantifying the probability that botanical material has of being found the desired phenological state in the field can enhance success in field expeditions, resulting in faster and more economical research. / In tropical vegetation, flowering plants have phenological patterns influenced by biotic and environmental factors and that can be studied using herbarium specimens.

______________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is an important crop because provides high-quality oil. Originally from North America, it is now grown in many countries, a fact that is due to the positive results of breeding programs. It is also characterized by its adaptability, being used as a second crop. In Brazil, materials with high oil content, high productivity and resistance to abiotic and biotic stress are the main goal. Sunflower has a great potential in the Brazilian Savannah, because it can be used in crop rotation. In this sense, it is necessary to have more studies and research activities that provide information about the performance of sunflower genotypes in different locations, enabling the success of breeding programs. This study aimed to characterize sunflower genotypes in different environments of the Brazilian Savannah in the Federal District, taking into account genetic parameters, agro-morphological characteristics, severity of alternaria leaf spot and seed quality. Sixteen sunflower genotypes were evaluated in 2014, at experimental areas of Embrapa Cerrados (Federal District - Brazil) located at 15º 35' 30" S latitude, 47º 42' 30" W longitude and 1.007 m above sea level, and of Embrapa Produtos e Mercado (Federal District – Brazil), located at 15º 54' 53" S latitude, 48º 02' 14" W longitude and 1.254 m above sea level. A complete randomized block design was used. Analysis of variance showed significant differences among genotypes. The environment influenced the performance of the genotypes and the severity of alternaria. GNZ NEON, M734, SYN 3950HO, AGUARÁ 06, SYN 045, MG 360 and HELIO 251 detained best results at electrical conductivity test. There were more symptoms of alternaria leaf spot in the lower third of the plants. The genotypes CF 101, ADV 5504, BRS G42, HELIO 250, SYN 3950HO, BRS 323, HELIO 251, AGUARÁ 06 and AGUARÁ 04 expressed lower AUDPC values in the lower third. The AUDPC values were low, indicating little disease. Environmental conditions did not favor alternaria leaf spot. The genotypes HELIO 251, MG 305 and SYN 045 had the best results for grain yield. BRS G42, CF 101 and BRS 323 detained lower values for height and days to flowering.
