“A FRIEND FROM FAR AWAY”: BERTOLT BRECHT AND HIS CHINESE-INFLUENCED WORKS

Qiao, Yiyuanfang 01 January 2016 (has links)
In the theatre field, Bertolt Brecht could be counted as a representation of cross-cultural phenomenon. His Verfremdungseffekt theory, Marxist beliefs and wide application of Chinese elements made him a significant stop for every person in theatre who has a passion for Chinese culture. For this reason, I am studying Brecht as a representative innovator who adapted the Eastern Asian elements, especially those from China, into his work, to illustrate this cultural phenomenon and the artistic achievement of his works as well. As an old saying in the Confucian Analects, “Isn’t it delightful to have friends coming from far away? ”, Brecht is like an old friend of China even though he never went to there. Since his works have been introduced into China from 1930s to 1940s, research of Brecht experienced ups and downs through the different political eras. Even now, Brecht’s theory and practice still has a deep impact on the Chinese drama. I particularly focus on Brecht’s works toward China, and try to illustrate them based on the former research from the European and American scholars as well as from Chinese scholars. I will clarify the Chinese traditional philosophy as the foundation of the whole thesis as well as the beginning of the first chapter, and analyze the Chinese-styled abstraction of Brecht’s poetry. In Chapter Two, I will illuminate the interaction between Brecht and traditional Chinese opera based on Huang Zuolin’s research. In addition, I will clarify the long-term misunderstanding that Chinese drama had for Brecht. In Chapter Three, I will focus on A Good Woman of Sichuan and The Caucasian Chalk Circle as representations to interpret the relationship between Brecht’s and the original versions as well as the Chinese philosophy that Brecht’s version has employed. Finally, the conclusion contains not only the summary, but also the possibilities for Brecht research in the future. Hopefully my work could balance both the objective truth and my personal thoughts, and contribute to the ones who may need them in the future.

Étude des effets de l’eau sur les phénomènes de rupture et de déformation affectant les carrières souterraines de craie / Study of water effects on failure and strain phenomena occuring in chalk underground quarries

Lafrance, Noémie 30 March 2016 (has links)
The accidents due to the sudden collapse of underground quarries are among the most destructive, both humanly and materially. The evolution of possible instabilities, since the issues are significant, implies to enrich current knowledge to predict their extent and their impact on the surface. Previous work has demonstrated the importance of the hydro-mechanical coupling in the diagnosis of stability. The complexity of the chalk-water interaction phenomenon is due to many environmental factors and sensitivity to each factor depends entirely on the chalk considered. The main objective of this thesis is to study the influence of water and water-rock interaction on the mechanical behaviour of three chalks as part of a multi-scale and multi-physics approach. The study of physical and mechanical characteristics of chalks from three underground quarries situated in the Parisian Basin, and their interaction with water was carried out. The results obtained through short-term hydro-mechanical tests remain consistent with the literature. The "ageing" of chalk from the underground quarries subjected to fluctuations in the water table has been proven and characterized. It is expressed, based on the chalk considered, by a change in the shape and size of crystals in the microstructure involving improved mechanical properties at the edge of the pillar to the detriment of the heart, or by the presence of traces of dissolution whose frequency increases as one moves from the heart, or by increasing the number of microcracks in the heart causing a decrease in the properties of the chalk. The study of the long-term behaviour of each chalk was developed through uniaxial creep tests with controlled humidity and waterlogging. It was established among other things that creep depends on the mineralogy / microstructure and the deviatoric stress-humidity couple but not on the loading history. The mechanisms believed to be the origin of creep deformations are of a physico-mechanical nature and involve the breaking and the restoring of electrostatic bonds between grains. The interpretation of all the tests carried out allowed to quantify the importance of the relative contributions of various parameters on the long-term behaviour. The long-term goal remains to power both the expertise and the model calculations so that one can predict the impact of a particular variation of the groundwater level on the long-term stability of chalk underground quarries. A rheological model has been developed in this direction within the INERIS (Souley et al. 2016)

P-Casso : The horizontal drawing robot / P-Casso : Den horisontella ritroboten

Kåreby, Oscar, Sundqvist, Sigge January 2022 (has links)
To define art is no easy task. Quotes such as ”Art is the elimination of the unnecessary” and ”A picture is worth a thousand words”, implies that art has something to do with conveying information. This is compatible with the fact that instructions are often conveyed in the form of images instead of text. Regardless of the definition and purpose of art, the interest of creating is with us from a young age. The idea behind this project was to broaden the limits of creation by evaluating possible ways of creating a robot able to paint a large flat horizontal surface, with primary focus on mobility, color application and position regulation. The project proved to be design-heavy since the system utilizes many components which demand synergy. All components were created and assembled in Solid Edge before additive manufacturing was used to produce them. The code was developed and tested successively in modules that were later meshed and executed between three separate Arduino microcontrollers in order to reduce delay. In the end mecanum wheels were used to achieve a movement pattern resembling that of a so called inkjet printer, allowing the robot to paint an image through parallel lines. The robot’s position is regulated using color sensors placed on the bottom side of the chassis and a spray can apply liquid chalk using a servo motor. The prototype is able to paint and follow a solid monochromatic line, but due to integration problems the images produced are non coherent. During continuous tests the chassis has been worn down which has lead to cracks and decreased stiffness, due to the choice of material.

Studies With the Deuterium Mass Spectrometer

Dean, Gordon H. 05 1900 (has links)
In the atomic energy pile at Chalk River, heavy water (deuterium oxide, D2O) is to be used as a moderator. Early in 1944, it became evident that frequent determinations of the isotopic composition of D2O samples would be required. For this purpose, there was obtained from the American authorities a mass spectrometer specially designed for routine hydrogen isotope analysis. This instrument was assembled and put into operation at McMaster in the summer of 1944. During the course of subsequent work, two other deuterium mass spectrometers were built in this laboratory, following the design of the instrument sent from the United States; one of these has now been installed at the plant site, and a second is to follow at an early date. The studies reported below involved the determination of operating conditions, the measurement of grid leaks, of the order of 10^10 ohms, and the investigation of further applications of the deuterium mass spectrometer. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

Hoch, Bruna Zakharia January 2017 (has links)
Chalk is a limestone formed by calcite, with up to 95% of calcium carbonate content. Many constructions and infrastructure works are carried out on chalk, and unpredictable situations still happen due to the lack of knowledge of its geotechnical behavior. Undisturbed, chalk is a weak rock that remains stable. However, when crushed, it breaks easily. These challenges, coupled with the abundance of this material in the UK, have led chalk to be studied in recent years for a better understanding of its characteristics and behavior. One of the ways of improving the chalk behavior is with the addition of Portland cement to the material, which is developed in this research. The chalk used in the testing was collected in St. Nicholas, Kent, UK, and characterised as CIRIA Grade A/B, low to medium density. The material was crushed in the laboratory until it became sandy silt, with D50 of 0.035 mm. The material was mixed with high initial strength Portland cement, at 3, 5 and 7% in relation to the dry soil mass The results of unconfined compression, traction by diametral compression and initial stiffness (G0) tests showed a gain of strength with the increase of cement content and specific dry unit weights in the studied samples. The strength data was analyzed as a function of the porosity by the volumetric content of cement (/Civ), showing the influence of the level of cementation and compaction in the strength of the mixture. The adjustment exponent of 0.28 in the cementing agent volume generated better determination coefficients in the results. There was an almost linear relationship between initial stiffness and unconfined compression strength. The stiffness versus time curves showed a logarithmic trend for the evolution of G0 with time in all samples. In the durability tests, the higher the dry unit weight and cement content of the sample, the lower the mass loss. The stiffness remained practically constant during the 12 cycles.

Méthodologie d'analyse de levés électromagnétiques aéroportés en domaine temporel pour la caractérisation géologique et hydrogéologique / Methodology of analysis of airborne time domain electromagnetic surveys for geological and hydrogeological characterization

Reninger, Pierre-Alexandre 24 October 2012 (has links)
This PhD thesis addresses various methodological aspects of the analysis of airborne Time Domain ElectroMagnetic (TDEM) surveys for a detailed interpretation in geological and hydrogeological purposes. This work was based on a survey conducted in the region of Courtenay (north-east of the Région Centre, France) characterized by a plateau of karstified chalk (karst des Trois Fontaines) covered by weathering clays and alluvium. First, a TDEM data filtering method using the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) was developed. The rigorous adaptation of this technique to TDEM data has successfully separated the noise, which was mapped, and the “geological signal”, greatly reducing the time required for processing. Furthermore, the method has proved to be effective to obtain quick preliminary geological information on the area. Then, a cross analysis between the resistivity model obtained by inverting the filtered data and the available boreholes was conducted. This has led to the improvement of the geological and hydrogeological knowledge of the area. An undulating feature, separating two chalk deposits, and a fault network were imaged in subsurface, providing a geological framework for the Trois Fontaines karst. Finally, a new 3D modelling method combining the information at boreholes and the slopes derived from the EM resistivity model yielded an accurate model of the top of the chalk. All of this work provides a solid framework for future geo-environmental studies using airborne TDEM data, even in anthropized area.

Soares, Ana Paula Justino 08 February 2012 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 AnaPJS_DISSERT.pdf: 3475683 bytes, checksum: 0a1aca9ea1cc67fdf9f54a968369acd0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-02-08 / The large investment in exploration activities offshore Brazil has generated new findings, generally in carbonate reservoirs, with different wettability conditions usually considered in the sandstone, strongly water-wet. In general, the carbonates reservoirs tend to be oil-wet, it difficult to mobilize of oil these reservoirs. These oils can be mobilized by different methods, or it may reverse the wettability of the surface of the reservoir and facilitate the flow of oil, improving production rates. Thus, the objective of this work was to study the influence of inversion on the wettability of the rock in the production and recovery of petroleum from carbonate reservoirs, using microemulsions. Three systems were chosen with different classes of surfactants: a cationic (C16TAB), an anionic (SDS) and nonionic (Unitol L90). Studies of the influence of salinity on the formation of the microemulsion as well as the characterization of fluids using density and viscosity measurements were also performed. To verify the potential of microemulsion systems in changing the wettability state of the chalk oil-wet to water-wet, contact angle measurements were performed using chalk of neutral-wet as surface material. Overall, with respect to the ionic character of the surfactants tested, the cationic surfactant (C16TAB) had a greater potential for reversal in wettability able to transform the rock wettability neutral to strongly water-wet, when compared with the anionic surfactant (SDS) and nonionic (Unitol L90), which showed similar behavior, improving the wettability of the rock to water. The microemulsions of all surfactants studied were effective in oil recovery, resulting in 76.92% for the system with C16TAB, 67.42% for the SDS and 66.30% for Unitol L90 of residual oil / O grande investimento em atividades explorat?rias no mar brasileiro tem gerado novas descobertas, geralmente em reservat?rios carbon?ticos, com condi??es de molhabilidade diferentes das usualmente consideradas em reservat?rios aren?ticos, fortemente molh?veis ? ?gua.

The lack of high quality aggregates in some French regions seems to become a main issue for road work firms. With an annual consumption of 200 millions tonnes of aggregates, road professionals must square up finding new solutions like the valorisation of some forgotten materials. Between rock and soil, chalk has a particular position in road work. While its use is relatively well managed for the realisation of fills and subgrade courses, the same certainly cannot be said for base courses. This kind of material is usually rejected for the design of road base courses because it is not approved within the current standards used by road professionals. Indeed, the low mechanical performances and the high water sensibility of chalk do not allow this material to be used. However, it seems possible to find some pre-treatments to harden chalk for a use in road base courses. This material is found profusely in some French regions otherwise limited in upscale aggregates (Nord-Pas de Calais, Champagne-Ardenne…). Therefore, valorising chalk may overcome the lack of aggregates, contribute to the preservation of natural resources, save up money and avoid pollution due to distant supplying. The study presented here is conducted in partnership between the Ecole Centrale de Lille Civil Engineering Laboratory and the Eurovia Roadworks Laboratory of Loos. We provide several trails aimed at improving the mechanical properties of chalk for its use in road base courses
