Innovativeness: One School's Experience of Sustaining Educational Change

Lieux, Maria L. 18 May 2018 (has links)
Abstract This single, embedded case study focused on educators’ experiences of educational change as they adopted, implemented, and sustained a one-to-one computing innovation over 20 years. The purpose of the study was to explore the innovativeness, the capacity of a school community to take on change for continuous educational improvement over time. Through interviews and focus groups with administrators, teachers, students, and graduates, observations of current classroom practices, and archival data, the study provides an understanding of how individuals experienced change and how a school sustained change over an exceptionally long period of time. Data analysis revealed multiple rationales for the implementation of one-to-one computing, including the development of a constructivist environment, the empowerment of women, preparation of students for college and the 21st century work force, and the need to keep the school’s educational program on the “cutting-edge.” The study of this individual school community suggests the importance of a strong educational philosophy, flexibility of implementation, an environment that encourages risk-taking, and collegiality. The study also demonstrates that change occurred on a continuum and continued to progress as hardware, software, and the Internet evolved, and as faculty became more knowledgeable of the application of the program to teaching and learning.

The Study of Professional Development Schools in Maryland, USA

Chang, Shin-pin 01 February 2010 (has links)
The aims of this study were to understand current status of professional development schools in the state of Maryland, USA. The definition, theoretical framework and theories of PDS were discussed firstly. Then, the researcher went on analyzing the PDSs of Towson university and collaborative elementary schools in Maryland, in order to find out the collaborative model and their implementation. There were five purposes in this study. The first purpose was to understand the definition of PDS. Secondly, the theoretical framework was discussed. Thirdly, the theories of PDS were explained and explored. The forth purpose was to analyze the implementation in the PDSs of Towson University and the collaborative elementary schools in Maryland. Finally, to synthesize the results of this study, the researcher suggests some strategies in the establishment of partnership between teacher education universities and elementary schools. For these purposes, the author made use of methods of document analysis and case study to discuss teacher education endeavors in Towson University, teacher¡¦s professional development and organizational change in schools withibn collaborative elementary schools, in order to understand the current status of the PDSs in Towson University and the collaborative elementary schools. According to the results, the following conclusions have been concluded: 1. Action research and inquiry into practicum should be highlighted in the PDSs, in order to improve the achievement of students from both sides. 2. Due to different context in the PDSs, diversified measures sould be provided. 3. Integration of teacher education, teacher¡¦s professional development, research and inquiry did improve the learning achievement of students. 4. Teachers in PDSs can promote themselves in professional development. 5. Teachers in PDSs need to be evaluated regularly in order to maintain their professional quality. 6. Whole member of university, school, family or community are supposed to participate in the improvement of students¡¦ achievement. Based upon the above conclusions, several suggestions have been raised by the researcher to play a solid basis for the country¡¦s teacher education and to upgrade the quality of future teachers.

Managing change in schools of the Kavango region in Namibia

Muyeghu, Augustinus 12 1900 (has links)
In the first chapter the author outlined the context of the study, the overview, terminology and the research aims, as well as research questions. The purpose of the study was to explore the management of change in schools of the Kavango region in Namibia. It aimed to determine the guidelines, factors that influence change, the role of the principals in managing change and strategies used to train school managers to cope with new demands and changes. The literature reviews, in Chapter 2, address the theories of change management. They further outline the role and successes of school principals in managing change. The literature revealed a lack of information-sharing and skill amongst staff members in general, and principals in particular. The description of the methodology in Chapter 3 addresses how the research questions were approached using purposeful sampling and semi-structured interviews as part of an interpretive approach. A thematic analysis of the data was undertaken from which important recurring concepts were derived. This process continued during data collection. The findings from the data analysis in terms of twelve themes (cf. 4.4) which were composed by grouping together related concepts are presented and described in Chapter 4. Findings showed that participating principals lack skills in managing change, but it appears that there is potential for improvement if they are trained to understand the management of change and leadership theories. A summary of the main findings of the study is found in Chapter 5, together with conclusions and recommendations. Limitations of the study and implications for future research are also addressed. An analysis of the study indicated that there is lack of support, monitoring and coordination of the management of change programmes at the regional level. Reference was made to leadership and management programmes such as the Education and Training Sector for Implementation Programme [ETSIP] initiated by the Ministry of Education [MoE] to assist principals. The findings suggest that programmes petered out because follow-up was limited. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Education Management)

Amputation without anaesthetic : 2004 Network Review : school and community reorganisation : a thesis submitted for the degree of Education doctorate at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand

Savage, Catherine January 2005 (has links)
This research investigated a 2004 Ministry of Education-led Education Development Initiative (EDI) known as the Network Review in one district from the perspective of board of trustees members, parents, teachers and students from one school using a case study approach. Focused interviews with participants and student groups were held on three separate occasions throughout 10 months of the reorganisation process. The interviews were analysed using content analysis and conclusions were reached using an inductive method of categorising. The findings indicate this reorganisation was far from realising the outcomes or benefits as predicted by the Ministry of Education. Student learning was not only jeopardised but student safety was also compromised in some settings indicating that there may be long-term implications for students as they express a reluctance to attend the new school, an increased sense of anomie and a lack of interest in learning. The reorganisation workload and stress reported by the BoT and teachers is significant and took a toll on personal wellbeing. The responsibility and workload far exceeded the expectation of the board of trustees as unpaid volunteers. The participants described the Ministry decision as "imposed" which failed to take into account the existing tensions within the community resulting in a sense of dissonance between government and community.

School improvement : the route taken by an urban primary school in the Republic of Maldives : a thesis presented in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Education at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand

Didi, Ahmed Ali January 2007 (has links)
The primary and secondary schools in the Maldives serve over one third of the total population. Having achieved universalization of primary education, one of the challenges of the education system now is to improve the quality of primary education. Studies done in the past, to explore quality in primary education, have been quantitative in nature, telling only part of the story when it comes to describing improvement efforts. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore in detail how a primary school in an urban setting of the Maldives deals with school improvement efforts. A qualitative case study, informed by the interpretivist research paradigm, was used to explore this issue. One of the primary schools in Male' was purposefully selected for this study and 48 participants took part, of whom thirteen were students. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observations, document reviews and administering of questionnaires. The findings of this study suggest that there were three major dimensions or three interrelated, key concepts that together undergirded the improvement efforts in the school. They are change, leadership and culture. In action-oriented terms, these dimensions or concepts translated into managing change, attending to specific leader actions and influencing the school's culture, respectively, reflecting six themes of school improvement. They are: a focus on change, a focus on students, a teaching learning focus, investing in staff, strong leadership by the head and school culture. In addition to these, it was noted that these themes emerged as having significance to the school's improvement efforts against the backdrop of many stakeholder influences and contextual factors. In essence, the findings of this study portray the micro-level realities of the working of a school that is consciously and continuously striving for improving educational practice. In conclusion to the study, research implications and areas for further research have been identified that would inform educational policy and practice in the Republic of Maldives.

Gemensamma provs påverkan på matematikundervisningen : En fallstudie av mellanstadielärares arbete i en svensk kommun / The influence on Mathematics education through standardized testing : A case study of a middle school teachers work in a Swedish municipality

Lindström, Christer, Guldberg, Frans January 2019 (has links)
A Swedish school municipality's ambitions has been to climb the school rankings. One way of doing this is to design a test for fifth grade pupils in order to discover gaps in students mathematical understandning well ahead of the national tests in the sixth grade. The purpose of this study is to investigate how this test affects the work of mathematics teachers. This has been investigated through qualitative interviews of the involved mathematics teachers. The data have been analyzed based on the theoretical starting point of socio-mathematical norms. We have also analyzed the mathematical content that the municipality has recommended the teachers to use as preparatory material. The result indicates that the work of mathematics teachers is very much influenced by the fact that the municipality organizes a central-controlled mathematics test. This applies to the mathematical content of their teaching and the socio-mathematical norms prevailing in the classrooms. Our conclusion is that the municipality can influence and alter the teachers' work both inside and outside the math class.
