Thaumaturgic prowess : autonomous and dependent miracle-working in Mark's Gospel and the Second Temple period

Kelley, Andrew Joseph January 2016 (has links)
In this thesis, I argue that Mark undergirds his high view of Jesus by characterizing him as an autonomous miracle-worker. In chapter one, I provide a history of literature regarding miracles, Mark, and the identity of Jesus. In chapter two, I demonstrate that the inclusion of deferment in miracle-narratives ranging from the Old Testament to Josephus’ Jewish Antiquities, is nearly ubiquitous. That is, human miracle-workers that appear in narratives do not act autonomously: rather, they show clear and explicit dependence on God to perform their miracles. In chapter three, I demonstrate that deferment is not only an essential charactersitic of miracles in narratives, but also in non-narrative texts from Qumran to the great many extant magical materials. In chapter four, I show that Jesus’ miracle-working in Mark, unlike the miracle-working surveyed in chapters two and three, is autonoumous. Additionally, I suggest that Mark uses this autonomous miracle-working, at crucial places in the gospel, to illustrate his high view of Jesus. In chapter five I draw a distinction between Mark’s characterization of Jesus and other miracle-workers he depicts in the narrative. In this final chapter, I argue that Jesus’ autonomous miracle-working is not an idiosyncratic feature of Mark’s writing style, but integral to his characterization of Jesus. Mark portrays other miracle-workers in the Gospel as dependent on either God or Jesus to perform miracles which further supports his high view of Jesus.

Creating character: a costume design portfolio

Ryan, Hayley Melissa 01 May 2018 (has links)
The role of a costume designer in a theatrical production is influential in creating character, time, and space. Costumes are the way in which a costume designer expresses a character’s personality, emotions, social status, and other personal idiosyncrasies. The job of a costume designer is to know how a character’s identity influences how they dress themselves. As a character develops throughout the performance, so must their clothing. Costumes show how a character ages, transforms, or regresses over the arc of a production. Not only do costumes show character details, they help clue the audience into time of day, season of the year, and whether the scene takes place indoors or out of doors. Costume designers draw inspiration from period images, paintings, writings, artwork, and fashion. A costume designer understands how small details within clothing can assist an audience’s understanding of character, time, and space. This thesis portfolio includes images and descriptions of my costume designs at the University of Iowa. This portfolio contains both realized productions and renderings from class work to show the evolution of my design work over the course of my Master of Fine Arts education. The entire breadth of my thesis portfolio can be found at the link: http://ir.uiowa.edu/theatre_d_folio/.

Speaking to the erotological fiction, people would often refer to Rou Pu Tuan. Besides Jin Ping Mei, Rou Pu Tuan is also frequently mentioned by people when it comes to the classic in those sexual stories. The book was even translated to many different languages in other countries. However, according to the prosperous publishing business during the Ming and Cing dynasties, Rou Pu Tuan is obviously not the only erotological fiction that had been published during those years. Why the Rou Pu Tuan can become such a famous erotological fiction? People would definitely curious about it. Therefore, my research is mainly focused on the Rou Pu Tuan itself. First step, I summarize the whole story. I also make a brief introduction to illustrate the dissemination and editions of Rou Pu Tuan. Moreover, I mention the background about the author and the time that Rou Pu Tuan had been written. Second step, I analyze male and female characters and discuss the power from both genders in the story. Finally, I try to find out the subjects of the whole story. According to my observation, the attraction of Rou Pu Tuan is based on its exquisite characterization and subjects that emphasize by some narrative way. This fiction does improve its value by giving different images and personalities to every role, but its main power is still possessed by the male. Retributive justice and appropriate sex are the subjects of the story. The story emphasized the subjects by using the coincidences that based on daily life, corresponding clues and the illustration from active narrator. Therefore, exquisite characterization and unique narrative for subjects are the factors that make Rou Pu Tuan a famous erotological fiction.

Kuo, Feng-Chang 29 August 2005 (has links)
In the trends of democratization, informationalization and globalization, the internet has compressed the circulation speed of strategies and concepts and linked different places of the world on the same network. Thus, in recent years many countries of the world never stop making administrative reforms and stressing the styles and abilities of full-range moral character management of high-rank civil servants so as to promote the administrative quality of the government and the civic aesthetics, strengthen the administrative and information ethics, and establish a good system for excellent democratic administration. In the process of social development and transformation of Taiwan, high-rank civil servants bear the responsibilities of leading the decisions as well as realizing and deepening the democratic administration. After the change of ruling party of Taiwan in 2000, the issues about high-rank civil servants¡¦ identification with the reforms of the party-state system and with Taiwan became the focuses of concern in different circles. In fact high-rank civil servants are not only the policy implementers, but also the policy-makers. The roles they are playing are very significant. In a democratized civic society, the democratic value that democratic administration pursues, the operation principles and the construction mechanism have to be formulated in order to create more solid civic power and human power, enhance the competitiveness of Taiwan, and investigate the internal qualities, techniques, styles and attainments of the moral character management of high-rank civil servants. In the 21st century the abilities that talents should possess include studying ability, personal ability and civic ability. Among these abilities, civic ability is most important. Civic ability includes such personal abilities as responsibility, self-discipline, honesty, etc. as well as the abilities to respect others, to accept and appreciate diversified cultures. Unfortunately, our society only emphasizes studying ability. Therefore, this study focuses the investigation on how to strengthen the employment, selection and moral character management of high-rank civil servants at the stage of government system reconstruction and administrative reforms. The study reviews the related literature of different areas and also the local and foreign research reports collected in the internet, and absorbs the experience of businesses, so as to remind the high-rank civil servants¡¦ mission of stressing moral character management, and arouse their identification with and loyalty to Taiwan. High-rank civil servants should be able to self-consciously make use of executive power to improve the bureaucratic system. Through education, democratic legal system can be propagated, promoting the effectiveness of democratic administration, strengthening the practicing of moral character management, achieving administrative reforms and political neutralization, deepening democratic quality, enlarging the democratic society, and creating advantageous situation for Taiwan.

The Relationships between work values, personal characters, and career orientations of the Taiwanese expatriates in Mainland China

Liu, Chin-Hsun 09 August 2002 (has links)
Abstract Due to the rapid growth of Taiwan enterprises in Mainland China these years, there is an increasing need for Taiwanese expatriates. In earlier days, only few people wanted to be assigned for working in China because of the worst political and living conditions. However, the situation is absolutely changed nowadays. More and more people volunteer to be allotted in China. Meanwhile, the motivation to work in China is not merely for fringe benefit or keeping the job. On the contrary, there are many Taiwanese settling families there f¡Cor their long-term career development. The phenomenon causes Taiwanese enterprises to ponder how to recruit the suitable expatriates and to reconsider the human resource strategy in China. Hence, we expect this research¡¦s result can not only help individuals to review their career plans but also provide companies ways to avoid failure by understanding the reasons why those employees strive to work in Mainland China. This study aims to examine the relationship between work values, personal characters, and career orientations of Taiwanese expatriates in Mainland China. Furthermore, it exploits immigrant intention as the moderate variable to distinguish the difference of career orientations. We conduct questionnaires in this survey to get widespread and universal conclusions. Besides, the qualitative research method will be adopted too. We will interview 5 to 8 Shanghai immigrants from Taiwan to complete this study. After Taiwan accession to World Trade Organization (WTO), the pressure of international competition has become more and more intense. How can we keep the ¡§economic miracle¡¨? To develop Taiwanese excellent human resources is the key to keep Taiwan competitive advantage. Needless to say, we need to realize employee¡¦s work values, personal characters and their career orientations, which can assist the organizations to design all the related human resources programs to optimize the manpower. This study tries to find out the different kinds of models about expatriates. Therefore, organizations can expand their business in overseas markets depending on their own demand to allocate the right person in the right place.
