Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / Diante da recorrência da criação de personagens-escritores nas obras brasileiras de ficção publicadas a partir dos anos 1990, foi escolhida a produção de Daniel Galera como estudo de caso. O personagem-escritor foi observado como estratégia para discutir questões relativas à cena literária contemporânea. Foi delimitado como corpus dessa pesquisa o blog criado durante a estada de Daniel Galera em Buenos Aires, ao participar do projeto Amores Expressos, e o romance Cordilheira (2008), escrito como fruto dessa experiência. Tendo em vista a trajetória de sua carreira em constante relação com a internet, foi analisada a construção do escritor-personagem no blog hospedado no site do projeto, em contraponto à figura do personagem-escritor no romance. Para tanto, foram utilizados textos sobre a autoficção, a performance e a autoria. Na comparação dos textos de ambos os suportes, foram evidenciadas semelhanças e diferenças nas problematizações a respeito da formação do autor. Foi investigada a inserção de trechos do blog no romance como estratégia que oferece complexidade nos espelhamentos das imagens e enriquece os efeitos de leitura do romance / Given the recurrence of the creation of characters as writers in Brazilian fiction works published since the 1990s, it was chosen the Daniel Galeras production as a case study. The character as writer was seen as a strategy to discuss issues concerning the contemporary literary scene. The research corpus was defined by a blog created during the Daniel Galeras stay in Buenos Aires, when he participated in Amores Expressos project, and the novel Cordilheira (2008), written as a result of that experience. By the trajectory of his career in a constant relation with the internet, it was analyzed the construction of writer as character in a blog hosted on the project site, in contrast to the figure of character as writer in the novel. For that, texts on autofiction, performance and authoring were used. Comparing the texts of both supports, similarities and differences in problematizations regarding the authors formation were found. The inclusion of excerpts from the blog in the novel was seen as a strategy that offers complexity of mirroring images and enhances the effects from the novel reading

Using a socio-political analysis, this thesis discusses the important relationship between politics and theater, using the pro-choice abortion movements of the 1960's as a way to understand Sally Bowles as a complex device for political and social commentary.

Choices and characters in roleplaying games : How types of choices affect the player/character connection

The connection that players can feel toward their characters in pen-and-paper roleplaying games is a known phenomenon that has been previously studied and is recognized among roleplaying enthusiasts. Pen-and-paper roleplaying games are a complex form of games, with three distinct frames which are ludological, social, and diegetic (also called narrative). The frames are different aspects of the game as well as the base of different motivations for players, who value the frames in a varied degree. The goal of this thesis is to examine if in-game choices based on the diegetic frame in contrast to the ludological frame are correlated with the player/character connection. The method used for data collection is distribution of a quantitative questionnaire on the internet, spread to Swedish roleplayers through social media and associations tied to SVEROK. With their answers, the analysis identifies correlations between the player/character connection and the three frames of pen-and-paper roleplaying games, as well as other correlations noted in the data analysis. The literature revolves around the two core concepts; the player/character connection and the three frames of roleplaying games. The result shows that diegetic choices in contrast to ludological are weakly correlated with the player/character connection.

This study attempts to define more clearly the concepts 'flat character' and 'round character' by examining instances of Sepedi literature. Definitions provided by theorists are in most cases vague and may lead to unsatisfactory interpretations. The best examples in this instance are the definitions provided by Forster - they create problems particularly with references to the concept 'round character'. Forster's definition creates the impression that the difference can be based on the manner of characterization. In this investigation, attention is thus paid to characterization, while it is pointed out that these concepts are not to be confused with the concepts 'antagonist', 'protagonist' and 'tritagonist'. The latter types of characters are classified as structural elements while the former are thematically important. The Sepedi literary works chosen for the purposes of this study represent the four most important prose genres in Sepedi. Tsebe's Noto-ya- Masogana ( 1954) is the representative of the category 'love story'; Kekana's Nnete Fela (1989) is a detective story; Rammala's Lukas Motsheletshele (1963) and Mphahlele's Letsogo Ia Molao (1984) are tragic narratives , while Phatudi concentrates on and describes elements of pathos in his Tladi wa Dikgati (1971 ). The characters in Tsebe and Kekana's narratives are flat. Whereas Tsebe's Lesibana is portrayed as a multidimensional character, Ariel in Kekana's detective story is presented as one - dimensional. According to the definitions of Forster, Lesibana could be classified as a round character and Ariel as a flat character. The problem that surfaces in this instance also becomes manifest in the investigation into Rammala, Mphahlele and Phatudi's works. Rammala's Lukas Motsheletshele and Mphahlele's Faro are multidimensional characters as opposed to Phatudi's Tladi who is onedimensional, yet all of them are round characters. The distinction that can be drawn between the concepts 'flat character' and 'round character' has to do with humaneness. The reader's identification with the flat charater is based on the reader's ability to distinguish between good and evil, while an understanding of and a feeling for fellow human beings determine identification with the round character. The author brings about this identification process by using a variety of literary devices. In this thesis, a great deal of emphasis is placed on the theme of each of the mentioned works and on how this theme determines the character types. The concept of 'identification' is a central issue in this study and has thus been explained in detail. The specific literary devices used by the author to bring about this identification have thus also been carefully investigated and discussed. Vliv ženských postav na postavy mužské v díle Pierra Corneille / The Influence of Female Characters on Male Characters in the Work of Pierre Corneille

This master's thesis analyses the influence of female characters on male characters in the work of P. Corneille, partly in relation to the evolution of Doubrovsky's cornelian heroism, whose theory it extends. The research concerns the plays Mélite, Médée and The Cid. The definition of the female influence continues through characterizing female characters in their relationship with male characters. Concerning the male characters, the thesis shows the female effect and the males' reactions to it. Here we can see the first traits of cornelian heroism. The female characters cause the male characters to suffer. The first reason for this is the desire of the male characters. The second reason lies in the overall weakness or, paradoxically, in the strength of their character. The male characters also have something else in common - a desire for revenge. A woman weakens the male hero, making him a slave to her will. So, the hero learns how to repel her strength. In the end, only his heroic ambitions influence him. The woman then only motivates him. The plays Mélite and Médée have not been translated into Czech yet. Therefore, this thesis extends the Czech reader's general knowledge and opens up new possibilities to approaching Corneille's work.

How does the character’s visual design help convey the character’s background in Genshin Impact

This study examines the relationship between the visual design of characters in thevideo game Genshin Impact and their character background. The study uses formal analysisand data collected on selected characters’ color choices, shapes, movements, facialexpressions, and backstories to analyze if the characters’ visual designs align with theirnarratives. This research is relevant to game designers, players, and game research scholars.Game designers can use the insights gained from this study to create more immersivecharacters that organically convey their backstories. The findings suggest that visual designplays a critical role in conveying character context and personality in the game. Thecharacters of the sample showed a strong visual appearance, effectively conveying theirbackground story and personality characteristics. The findings of this study confirm that thecharacter design in Genshin Impact effectively conveys the character’s background. Theanalysis revealed notable strengths in employing a skillful combination of color, shapes,movements, and facial expressions to evoke specific emotions, accentuate character traits, andenhance the storytelling experience. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of carefullyconsidering and refining visual design choices to align with the intended narrative and engageplayers effectively. Future research could explore other aspects of visual design and its impacton video game character development.

The massive effect of NPCs : How the Mass Effect series creates likable NPCs

Many video games use non-playable characters (NPCs) as important plot devices and for supplying the players with a meaningful playing experience. The Mass Effect series is known to have many likeable NPCs in its story, and even though emotional attachment and believable traits of NPCs has been defined, it is not entirely known what likeable NPCs excel in. Therefore, six participants were interviewed to talk about their favourite and least liked NPC and most memorable moment from the series. The results show that well developed AI, an unique personality, character development and free choice to avoid the NPC made them likeable.
