Very little literature is available on the functions of the child psychiatric nurse, in this regard. This study was done to determine the functions of the child psychiatric nurse in the deliverance of a primary mental health care service for children. It was done by using the opinions of practicing child psychiatrists and child psychiatric nurses in South Africa.

of Arts in Clinical Psychology, / The idea of psycho-immunity stands as a relatively new field of inquiry focusing
on resilience and coping instead of breakdown and pathology. In line with this
shift in the literature, the present research has attempted to explore the
relationship between the quality of mothering experienced by the child and
subsequent patterns of perceived competence revealed by that same child. Black
township children were selected as subjects as they are deemed to be a population
"at risk" due to the cumulative political and socio-economic exigencies that have
affected this community for many years.
A total of 72 township children between the ages of 12 -17 were assessed. Both
structured and supplementary unstructured instruments were employed in order
to measure the quality of the maternal relationship on the one hand, and the
child's perception of his/her own competence (or resilience) on the other.
Results converged to indicate that for the sample investigated, it was the specific
"holding" capacity, availability and involvement of the affectively engaged mother-figure
that was most highly correlated with competence of a scholastic nature in
early adolescence. Conversely, the intrusive mother who wields power as a
parenting style was shown to be more likely to raise a child with a poor sense of
social acceptance and competence.
These findings provide penetrating insights regarding the potency of the maternal dyad
in fostering resilience and competence in off-spring. They offer further
understanding of the role of black parenting styles in either promoting or
demoting the development of psychologically healthy youths who have the
potential to become active participants in a new and more just South Africa. / Andrew Chakane 2018

Child and adolescent mental health represents a key area of concern and public health relevance. Mental health disorders are one of the most prevalent illnesses affecting young people and contribute significantly to the global burden of disease. Childhood and adolescent mental health problems often persist into adulthood and as such frequently result in lifelong negative consequences. Yet despite the growing concern with regards to the mental health needs of children and adolescents, not much research, both internationally and particularly locally, has focused on the provision of mental health services to children and adolescents. Additionally, little has been published on the changes and trends in diagnostic rates and assessment procedures over time. Only a few international studies have investigated mental health trends in children and adolescents; hence, there is a crucial need for South African data to inform preventative and curative services for children in South Africa. This present study therefore investigated the trends and patterns relating to diagnostic rates and assessment practices in children and adolescents over time at a local South African psychological community service centre in Pietermaritzburg.
The study was a retrospective chart review and the sample consisted of 679 case files from children and adolescents between 3-17 years of age, who had been seen at a local psychological service centre between 1987-1989, 1997-1999 and 2007-2009. The case files were systematically analysed with regards to diagnosis and assessment practices. It was hypothesised that the years of continuous social and political conflict in the Pietermaritzburg area, namely 1987-1989, had a direct impact on the psychological development and well-being of children and adolescents from this area, and that this would be reflected in the case files from the corresponding years.
The research findings with regard to the assessment practices were comparable to the internationally observed trends relating to choice of tests and procedures. In addition, the findings of the current study also showed similar trends with regard to the increasing diagnostic rates for ADD/ADHD, Mood Disorder, and Autism Spectrum Disorders as were observed internationally. Additionally, the reported decreasing diagnostic rates for Mental Retardation and behaviour disorders were also found in this local study. However, the internationally observed increases in Anxiety Disorder diagnoses contrast with the findings of this study, where the results revealed that the rates for Anxiety Disorder and PTSD were considerably higher in the late 1980s and 1990s. An exploration of the experience of a memory box programme by children affected by HIV and AIDS.Gwezera, Brighton. January 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to highlight the benefits of a Memory Box Programme on the social and emotional developmental functioning of orphaned children. The study focused on the memory box approach used by Sinomlando Centre with orphaned children. The Sinomlando Memory Box Programme has been in existence since 2000. The overall objective of this Memory Box Programme is to enhance resilience in vulnerable children and orphans affected by HIV and AIDS through the methodology of memory boxes In contributing to the discourse on memory work, an interpretive method of data collection and analysis in the form of a focus group discussion and thematic analysis was utilized in this study. Three focus groups were conducted with 26 orphaned children between the ages of 12 years to 15 years. Sampling of the children was based on a purposive sample, targeting children orphaned by AIDS who attended a 5-day camp conducted through a local NGO. The results of the study indicate that children who attended the Sinomlando Memory Box Programme had benefited from their involvement in the programme in diverse ways. They felt that being involved in a Memory Box Programme equipped them with better coping mechanisms and skills. These included the appropriate expression of feelings, the ability to talk about their parent’s death, and overcoming their sense of alienation so they could better cope with their difficult circumstances. / Thesis (M.A.) - University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2009.

An evaluation of a group therapy programme for vulnerable children.Spencer, Donna Nicole. January 2004 (has links)
HIV/AIDS is the biggest challenge facing humankind today and can no longer be
compared to other health disasters. One of the greatest challenges it presents is that of
nurturing healthy children to become competent, adaptive adults despite the numerous
negative effects of the pandemic. Of concern is the lack of interventions that address the
psychosocial needs of children affected by HIV/AIDS, poverty and violence. The present
research study aims to evaluate a group therapy programme that has been developed to
address this lack.
The therapy programme used in this study is embedded in Bronfenbrenner's (1979)
ecological model, which focuses on the interaction between person and environment.
The model proposes that this interaction is two directional and reciprocal. It also draws
on the literature concerning risk and resilience in children, which aims to understand
personal, familial and social factors that create and sustain resilience in children. Thus,
the programme aims to intervene on many levels and to give the children the opportunity
to deal with and gain mastery over their past experiences and feelings. In addition, it
aims to develop resilience, self-esteem and internal coping resources and enables them to
access external support systems in the future.
In order to evaluate the programme, a sample of 43 vulnerable children was drawn from a peri-urban community in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. The sample was randomly
divided into a control group and two experimental groups, that later merged into one
experimental group. Pre-test data was collected from all the participants in the form of a
questionnaire consisting of 4 quantitative tools: the Trauma Symptom Checklist for
Children (TSCC), the Culture Free Self Esteem Inventory (CFSEI), the Reynolds Child
Depression Scale (RCDS) and a Social Support Scale (SSS).
The group therapy programme, consisting of 15 sessions was then run with the
experimental group. The control group engaged in 15 sessions involving games, singing,

drawing and other activities. Post-test data using the same questionnaire was collected
from all the participants.
The data was analysed quantitatively. No statistically significant differences were noted
between any of the overall pre- and post-test data, except that of the TSCC. The
graphical representations of the results showed a reduction in trauma symptoms and
depression, and a raise in self-esteem, however the p-values were not significant. This is
thought to be the result of the small sample size. The result also indicated that the CFSEI
cannot be considered a reliable tool in this study.
This study emphasises the need for further research in the field of vulnerable children in
South Africa and the development, implementation and evaluation of interventions for

The development and evaluation of a community-based programme offering psychosocial support to vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS, poverty and violence.January 2004 (has links)
This research programme endeavours to develop, implement and evaluate an effective method of offering psychosocial support to vulnerable children. Vulnerability is defined by trained community members as including children who are experiencing especially difficult lives. The forms of difficulties experienced by the children has usually been a consequence of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, extreme poverty combined with other psychosocial risk factors, child abuse (especially child sexual abuse) and violence. This community based programme incorporates four phases of intervention, only two of which were the focus of summative evaluation. However, due to the integrated nature of the programme it was necessary to implement and document the various phases of the intervention programme: (i) community selection and mobilisation; (ii) the 5-day Sensitisation Programme (SP) sensitises adult community volunteers to the psychosocial needs of vulnerable children; (iii) the 15-session Structured Group Therapy Programme (SGTP) enables children to work through past adversities and to build resilience within small groups of peers in a programme where community volunteers served as apprentice facilitators under the supervision, guidance and ethical responsibility of qualified psychologists; (iv) community based initiatives to offer on-going of PSS activities to vulnerable children in each of the partnering communities. Nine partnering communities were selected, three township, periurban and rural communities. This programme was not effective in the informal settlements as it was not possible for these communities to place children as a priority. A qualitative summative evaluation of the SP took place using post workshop evaluation questionnaires, focus group discussions conducted by an independent researcher and an audit of the community based initiatives that developed as a result of participation in the SP. The SGTP was summatively evaluated using a 4-way Factorial design with one within-subject and three between-subject conditions: to investigate the age of the subjects, the geographic regions and gender variables. The 741 children formed five experimental and control conditions to conduct various combinations of the above-mentioned phases programmes and to adequately control for the many confounding variables. Pre- and post intervention assessments were conducted by trained community research assistants. The dependent variable measures were the Culture Free Self Esteem Inventory (Battle, 1992), the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children (Biere & Elliot, 1997), the Reynolds Depression Scale for Children (Reynolds, 1989), the Social Support Scale (Beale Spencer, Cole, Jones, and Phillips Swanson, 1997) and the Connor's Parent Questionnaire Connors, 1998). Multivariate analysis evaluated the effectiveness of the various experimental and control conditions. The results indicate that the SGTP, run in combination with the SP, is an effective intervention strategy in that it alleviates symptoms of self-reported depression and other psychosocial manifestations of distress as well as decreased the number and severity of symptoms reported by primary caregivers, and leads to increased access to perceived social support. The SP and the SGTP conducted independently of each other have limited benefits and as such can be considered to be partially effective. The children who had formed part of the non-vulnerable control group felt left out of the programme and report an increase in symptomatology and decreased access to social support. While this community-based programme can be considered to be an effective method of therapeutic intervention and of offering psychosocial support to vulnerable children, further research is needed to consider the cost-effectiveness, the sustainability and ways in which those children who do not participate can still can benefit. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2004.

Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and Zulu / In this study, social exclusion in an independent, faith-based girl’s school in South Africa was investigated. Bullying is widely recognised as being unacceptable and is addressed by many schools in the form of anti-bullying policies. However, on ongoing basis, girls are being socially excluded from relationships and because this behaviour is often so subtle, it is neither recognised as a form of bullying nor is it being addressed within schools. Theologians argue that educational institutions ought to evaluate the ethical dimension of knowledge construction and that a focus on moral norms, values and virtues need to be a fundamental part of such communities, so that the well-being of its members is fostered. Unless problems such as social exclusion are understood from a theological-ethical perspective, it is unlikely that there will be a permanent change in girls’ behaviour. Changing societies that accommodate bullying requires changes in perspectives, attitudes and behaviour, and schools can make a significant contribution in providing a community in which every child feels accepted and is afforded dignity.
This study offers a theoretical-ethical perspective of social exclusion and draws on insights from the fields of theological ethics, sociology, psychology and anthropology. The reasons why girls are socially excluded, the girls’ and the school’s systemic patterns of behaviour and what educators can do to develop an inclusive community are identified. To determine to what extent the theory was supported, alumnae were asked to complete the questionnaires and be interviewed. Some staff members also completed questionnaires and agreed to be interviewed.
The findings of the empirical research indicated that the theoretical research was largely supported. Some interesting observations emerged from the questionnaires and interviews that expanded the understanding of social exclusion. One important finding was that the girls who are being excluded from social relationships feel that they are to blame and that they somehow deserve to be excluded. They experience strong feelings of shame as well as loss of self-esteem. This prevents them from discussing or reporting the problem and therefore the structures that are in place for such reporting are not effective. Another important finding was that there is a disconnection between the girls and the staff regarding the effectiveness of current interventions. Therefore, based on the theoretical research and the findings of the empirical data, this dissertation makes recommendations for establishing a community that promotes the well-being and dignity of all. / In hierdie studie is ondersoek ingestel na sosiale uitsluiting in ’n onafhanklike, geloofsgebaseerde meisieskool in Suid-Afrika.
