Teacher's curriculum desicion making at classroom level: the perspective of negotiation / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / Jiao shi jiao shi ceng mian de ke cheng jue ce: xie shang de shi jiao.January 2010 (has links)
Considering the characteristics of research questions, The study adopted qualitative approach and case study strategy. Six teachers from two elementary schools in a district of Shanghai were chosen as cases. Data was collected through observations, interviews and documents, and then coded and analyzed them by Nvivc8. / Shanghai launched its curriculum reform since the late 1980s, which was followed by the second round curriculum reform started in 1998. Owing to those constantly wheeling processes of reform, curriculum materials, teaching methods, curriculum evaluation, curriculum organization, accountability and people's conception of curriculum experienced a big change. These changes challenged teachers' traditional understandings of curriculum and teaching as well as their ways of acting. The practice of teaching becomes more and more complicated, and there are a lot of conflicts and uncertainties in it. Rather than choosing between the right and wrong, teachers make their decisions through negotiations with many elements in the dynamic field. Based on these considerartions, this research focuses on the content of decisions teachers make at the level of classroom along with analysis of these processes which are framed in a perspective of negotiation. / The findings of this research indicate that: (1) The content of teachers' curriculum decision-makings at the level of classroom concentrated on teaching goals, content and process, while emphasizing evaluations after classroom instead of instantaneous evaluations in teaching. (2) Thenegotiation with situation factors was the main avenue teachers took to decide teaching goals and contents. When conflicts emerged between teachers' beliefs and situation factors, most of teachers were inclined to step back and make compromise with situation factors. (3) Teachers' negotiation with other people provided accesses for teachers to getting emerging curriculum ideas, learning processes and methods of teaching. People who have authority in experience of teaching, professional knowledge and administrative power were important evidences for teachers' decision-making. (4) Along with accumulation of experience in teaching, teachers' decisions mainly depended on their negotiations with themselves. (5) Teachers' final decisions were co-products of their negotiations with situation, other people and themselves, while each of these three elements played different role in this process. / Through analyzing content and process of decision-makings of teachers in elementary school in Shanghai, this research summed up the characteristics of negotiation embodied in the Chinese teachers' decision-making at the level of classroom. Those findings will shed some light on the improvement of curriculum reform in Chinese basic education as well as on teacher development domain. / Adviser: Pingkwan Fok. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 73-03, Section: A, page: . / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2010. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 345-362). / Electronic reproduction. 上海紳商居士的宗教生活與佛教現代化轉型: 以王一亭(1867-1938)為個案 = Religious lives of Shanghai's lay buddhist business elites and the modernization of Chinese buddhism : a case study of Wang Yiting (1867-1938). / Religious lives of Shanghai's lay buddhist business elites and the modernization of Chinese buddhism: a case study of Wang Yiting (1867-1938) / Shanghai shen shang ju shi de zong jiao sheng huo yu fo jiao xian dai hua zhuan xing: yi Wang Yiting (1867-1938) wai ge an = Religious lives of Shanghai's lay buddhist business elites and the modernization of Chinese buddhism : a case study of Wang Yiting (1867-1938).January 2015 (has links)
Despite their significant role in the history of modern Chinese Buddhism, focused study on the Shanghai’s lay Buddhist business elites is insufficient for a full understanding on them. This thesis is a case study of a representative Shanghai’s lay Buddhist business elite called Wang Yiting(1867~1938). We aim at analyzing his religious practices and his involvement in the modernization of Chinese Buddhism in Shanghai. Making use of first-hand resources including local chronicles, archives, Wang’s artworks and his non-Buddhist writings, this thesis applies the methodology of iconography and the theory on social practice of Pierre Bourdieu to analyze the religious practices of Wang Yiting and his reproduction and representation of modern Chinese Buddhism. / Chapter one traces the experience of Wang’s taking refuge in Buddhism and his daily Buddhist practices. Chapter two discusses the lay Buddhist movement led by Wang and his friends and compares it with traditional monastic organizations. Chapter three analyzes Wang’s religious beliefs as revealed in his art works. We also study how Wang has utilized Buddhist art for charity work and education of the mass. Chapter four studies the Association of Chinese Philanthropy of Aiding Life in Shanghai. We will study how the popular practices of spirit writing and of the Jigong cult was introduced into the Buddhism by Wang Yiting. / Through the case study of Wang we intend to show (1) how the Shanghai Buddhist lay merchants had successfully transformed the traditional monastic economy, (2) how they had integrated the popular practice of spirit writing and charity work into modern Buddhism, and finally (3) how the leadership of modern Buddhism has transferred from eminent monks to these lay Buddhist merchants. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Thesis submitted: December 2014. / Thesis (Ph.D.) Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2015. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 248-263). / Abstracts also in Chinese. / Zhang Jia.

(1912-1920s). / Landscape of translation in Shanghai popular literary magazines, 1912-1920s / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / Shanghai tong su wen xue za zhi de fan yi tu jing (1912-1920s).January 2013 (has links)
Based on a historical study of the translation in six popular literary magazines published in early Republican Shanghai, the thesis attempts to explore dynamic cultural landscape of early modern China by reconstructing the ecology and patterns of magazine translation. In line with the perspectives of system theories in Translation Studies, translation is viewed as both functional constituent and shaping force in its cultural settings. With a keen interest in the historicity of texts and notions, the thesis examines magazine translation by analyzing key concepts in system theories such as ‘norm’ and ‘canon’ in the context of early Republican printed media. Translated texts in the magazines under study are also analyzed in comparison with those published in May-fourth journals in the same period. Magazine translation is then presented as a site of conversation, competition and mutual positioning between popular and elite intellectuals. Offering to fill a gap in Chinese translation history with its reconstructive efforts, the thesis proposes an alternative delineation of cultural history against the ‘grand narrative’ that dismisses the literary practices in Shanghai popular magazines as mere residues of the late Imperial era. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Thesis submitted: November 2012. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2013. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 208-214). / Electronic reproduction. In part three 'Women·Song and Dance-Vernacular' (chapter 5), I deploy film textual analysis, focused on one female image--the sing-song girl, and in this part, I try to identify the differences and similarities of soft film and Li's soft songs and dances. From the perspective of women and on the basis of comparison, I try to study the hybridity of Chinese vernacular in left-wing films. / In the first part 'Poems·Music·Vernacular' (chapters 1&2), I draw upon intermediary and interdisciplinary research methods, to analyse the interrelationship between Hu Shi's vernacular poems and Li Jinhui's popular songs. Focusing on Li Jinhui's musical practices from the May Fourth to the 1920s and the 1930s, I try to analyse and summarize the two key features of Chinese vernacular modernism: intertextuality and hybridity, characterised by the mixture of different cultures and discourses (including urban popular culture, intellectual high culture, official culture, traditional folk culture and so on), and the dialectical relations between body and sense and enlightenment and education ('Entertainment with Enlightenment', Yu Jiao Yu Le). / In the second part 'Vernacular·Songs·Sound films' consisting of two chapters (3&4) , I will analyse film magazines, such as Film Magazine (Yingxi zazhi), Movie Magazine (Dianying zazhi) and Modern Cinema (Xiandai dianying), film texts, such as Street Angel (Malu tianshi, Yuan Muzhi, 1937) The Big Road (Dalu, Sun Yu, 1934), Children of Trouble Time (fengyun er nuˇ, Xu Xingzhi, 1935), The New Year's Coin (Yasui qian, Xia Yan, 1937), etc., and I draw a picture of Chinese early cinema's vernacular scene, before and after the arrival of sound. Specifically, from the perspective of the musical tune and lyrics of film songs, I attempt to analyse the hybridity of Chinese vernacular embodied especially in left-wing films. / The dissertation has three main sections. / This dissertation is focused on analysing the film culture of Chinese early cinema from the perspective of sound, from 1930 to 1937. The theoretical development of this dissertation is based around the concept of vernacular modernism, proposed by Miriam Bratu Hansen and developed by Zhang Zhen. I will not simply borrow this theory but use it within a critical framework. I attempt to rethink its meanings in the Chinese context, and on this basis, I will propose a new account of early Chinese sound film's vernacular modern history. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 73-04, Section: A, page: . / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2011. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 262-267). / Electronic reproduction. After the establishment of the mission stations in Hong Kong and Shanghai, the missionaries of LMS began to undertake several mission activities such as building churches, education, translation and publishing activities and medical missions. Chapter 4, 5 will introduce the missionary activities, such as education, publish and Bible translation that engaged in the Anglo-Chinese College of Hong Kong and the LMS Press of Shanghai. Based on these facts, I will expose the role of LMS missionaries in the Sino-western culture conflict and exchange, and the Christian mission indigenization in China. / After the Opium War, under the diplomatic and military pressure of the west powers, the government of Qing was forced to give up the policy of forbidding the propagation of Christianity. Protestant Missions, like that of Catholic, gained legal status, and they could begin the process to entering China inland. After the occupation of Hong Kong by the British according to the Nanjing Treaty, LMS which sent missionaries to China began to move the missionary base to this colony. It decided that Benjamin Hobson and James Legge who once worked in Malacca took the responsibility of mission in Hong Kong. And Anglo-Chinese College at Malacca was also moved to Hong Kong, then became the mission station of LMS in Hong Kong. Meanwhile, the five ports, i.e. Guangzhou, Xiamen, Fuzhou, Ningbo and Shanghai, were opened, the LMS missionaries immediately resumed their exercises in Guangzhou, and opened new mission stations in other ports. Walter Henry Medhurst once worked in Batavia and William Lockhart went to Shanghai and established the LMS Press as a mission station in Shanghai. Chapter 3 will tell the stories of the early LMS missionaries leading by James Legge and W. H. Medhurst whose worked in Hong Kong and Shanghai respectively. / Chapter 6 will concern those detailed things occurred in Tai-ping rebellion movement and the 2nd Opium War. I want to explain the effects of the colonialism and the Chinese social turbulence to the missionaries. / In Chapter 7, at the conclusion of the thesis, I hope to make a righteous evaluation of these missionaries' various works in China. / Many articles and books on the history of the Protestant missions in China have been published, and some of them deal with the LMS missionaries and the early times of the mission history. Chapter 1 of this thesis surveys and comments upon the past results of research concerning this theme, and points out that such publications have laid foundation for my research, but there are still many problems should be studies thoroughly and systematically. / The period from 1807 to 1840 is the beginning and preparing era for the Protestant missions to China. In 1807, Robert Morrison, a missionary sent by LMS arrived in Guangzhou. His arrival marked the beginning of the LMS missionary enterprises in China. Because the government of Qing was tightly forbad propagation of Christianity, Robert Morrison and William Milne, another missionary sent by LMS, decided to organize "The Ultra-Ganges Mission", and founded a headquarter in Malacca named "Anglo-Chinese College". Afterwards, many Protestant missionaries, including LMS missionaries came to the South East Asia and undertook many tasks, such as learning Chinese, translation, publication and medical mission. Chapter 2 will introduce these activities of LMS missionaries in SEA at the period of "waiting for China". / The topic of this thesis is the history of the LMS (London Missionary Society) missionary movement in Hong Kong and Shanghai in the early period and focuses on the two missionary agencies, Anglo-Chinese College in Hong Kong and London Missionary Society Press in Shanghai. These two missionary agencies were important stages for the early Protestant LMS missionaries to play a key role in the evangelization and communication in China. / Adviser: Hok Ming Cheung. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 68-02, Section: A, page: 0689. / Electronic reproduction.
