Zou Xiangping is one of the most significant Chinese composers who writes music for the saxophone. These works, however, are not well-known in the classical saxophone repertoire. The purpose of this dissertation is to help international saxophonists develop an enlightened understanding and ultimately, performance of two selected pieces by Chinese composer Zou Xiangping (邹向平) (b. 1951), Images of Yalong River for Alto Saxophone and Piano (雅砻江印:为中音萨克斯管和钢琴) and Song of Chuanjiang River Boatman for Saxophone Quartet (川江纤夫之歌: 为萨克斯管四重奏) (2022). The compositional background, the relevant introduction about Chinese culture, the manner in which the composer combined this with Western compositional techniques, and comprehensive performance advice of each piece are provided.

In this thesis, three websites are explored in-depth and serve as a case study for an intercultural comparison of websites as public relations tools. The websites of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), Shanghai Pudong Development Bank (SPDB), and Citibank were evaluated for this specific study because they represent three models of current banks operating in a culturally-evolving Chinese society. The two-way symmetrical model of public relations and the personal influence model have provided basic framework for this thesis. To establish the two-way symmetrical public relations via the website, these three banks employ different public relations strategies due to the different organizational structure and operating systems. In addition, culture has played an important role for banks to build relationships with their various publics. Specifically, Confucian ideology, the foundation for Chinese culture, provides insights for this thesis. To cater to the publics, ICBC adhered more strictly to Chinese culture norms, while SPDB's website is a reflection of a hybrid of Western and Chinese culture. Moreover, although Citibank does not make many efforts to culturally cater to its Chinese publics, Citibank successfully built its reputation and image through building a business-oriented and expert website. / Master of Arts

In the theatre field, Bertolt Brecht could be counted as a representation of cross-cultural phenomenon. His Verfremdungseffekt theory, Marxist beliefs and wide application of Chinese elements made him a significant stop for every person in theatre who has a passion for Chinese culture. For this reason, I am studying Brecht as a representative innovator who adapted the Eastern Asian elements, especially those from China, into his work, to illustrate this cultural phenomenon and the artistic achievement of his works as well. As an old saying in the Confucian Analects, “Isn’t it delightful to have friends coming from far away? ”, Brecht is like an old friend of China even though he never went to there. Since his works have been introduced into China from 1930s to 1940s, research of Brecht experienced ups and downs through the different political eras.
Even now, Brecht’s theory and practice still has a deep impact on the Chinese drama. I particularly focus on Brecht’s works toward China, and try to illustrate them based on the former research from the European and American scholars as well as from Chinese scholars. I will clarify the Chinese traditional philosophy as the foundation of the whole thesis as well as the beginning of the first chapter, and analyze the Chinese-styled abstraction of Brecht’s poetry. In Chapter Two, I will illuminate the interaction between Brecht and traditional Chinese opera based on Huang Zuolin’s research. In addition, I will clarify the long-term misunderstanding that Chinese drama had for Brecht. In Chapter Three, I will focus on A Good Woman of Sichuan and The Caucasian Chalk Circle as representations to interpret the relationship between Brecht’s and the original versions as well as the Chinese philosophy that Brecht’s version has employed. Finally, the conclusion contains not only the summary, but also the possibilities for Brecht research in the future. Hopefully my work could balance both the objective truth and my personal thoughts, and contribute to the ones who may need them in the future.

This essay uses social constructionism and intersectionality to argue that the narrator in The Woman Warrior is experiencing feelings of identity confusion due to the different stereotypes of femininity that American and Chinese culture hold. The experiences are caused mainly by Chinese society, American society, her mother, and the talk-stories told in the book. She also establishes her identity through all four of these categories and comes to the conclusion that the concept of femininity is a stereotype and should not be adhered to as it furthers the patriarchal view of women.

Previous issue date: 2013-05-16 / In the current scenario that presents China as Brazil s largest trading partner, there
has been a significant growth of Brazilian companies that trade with the Asian
country. Nonetheless, it is also observed that only a few of these companies have
established presence in Chinese territory. According to recent research, this physical
and cultural distance is pointed as the main barrier to the entry and further access to
China. This dissertation seeks to explore the cultural differences that influence the
deployment and administration of businesses in China and has identified four traits
playing a crucial role: language/communication, hierarchy, "Face" (mianzi) and
guanxi (relationship network).These elements were described based on literature and
field research with four Brazilian companies in China. The case studies explored
qualitative and descriptive aspects, featuring the testimony of seven Brazilian
leaders, responsible for the management of these companies in China. It was
concluded that learning about Chinese culture could be basic premise to reach a
well-established and steady business in China, although it does not guarantee a
successful adaptation. Moreover, managers on the front line have the greatest
responsibility in managing and carrying out the adaptation, which implies that,
partially, the idiosyncratic characteristics of these leaders can be a major factor to
determine the adaptation of the franchise and overall success of the venture. The
issue of diversity and cultural differences make up a spectrum of variables that can
affect the internationalization of enterprises to China. Thus, taking into account
cultural diversity becomes an essential part of the business strategy and one that can
represent a great competitive advantage. It is expected that by delivering greater
knowledge about China and its culture, the results of this thesis can contribute to
reduce the cultural distance between the Asian country and Brazilian companies / No contexto atual, em que a China é o principal parceiro comercial do Brasil, verificase
um crescimento expressivo de empresas brasileiras que comercializam com o
país asiático, mas poucas instaladas em seu território. As distâncias física e cultural
são apontadas como principal obstáculo ao ingresso na China, segundo pesquisa
recente. Essa dissertação busca estudar as diferenças culturais que mais
influenciam a implantação e condução dos negócios na China, e identificou quatro
traços expressos como idioma/comunicação, hierarquia, Face (mianzi) e guanxi
(rede de relacionamento). Esses elementos foram descritos com base na pesquisa
bibliográfica e na pesquisa de campo com quatro empresas brasileiras na China. O
estudo de casos múltiplos, de natureza qualitativa e descritiva, contou com o
testemunho de sete dirigentes brasileiros, responsáveis pela gestão destas
empresas em território chinês. Concluiu-se que o aprendizado sobre a cultura
chinesa pode ser premissa básica para estabelecer-se e manter-se na China,
embora não garanta por si só o sucesso da adaptação. Além disso, sobre os
gestores da linha de frente recai a maior responsabilidade na condução da
adaptação e do management e, em parte, as características idiossincráticas desses
líderes podem ser fator preponderante para lograr a adaptação da filial e o êxito do
empreendimento. A questão da diversidade e das diferenças culturais compõe o
corpo de variáveis sensíveis à internacionalização das empresas para a China, e
implica pensar a diversidade cultural como parte da estratégia que agrega valor aos
negócios, podendo representar maior vantagem competitiva. Espera-se que os
resultados desta dissertação possam contribuir para a diminuição da distância
cultural através do maior conhecimento sobre a China e sua cultura.
