Dilemmas of cooperative learning: Chinese students in a Canadian school

Liang, Xiaoping 05 1900 (has links)
Research in cooperative learning in education generally and second language education in particular has documented the apparently successful and simultaneous achievement of a number of educational goals. For second language learners, these goals include developing the second language (L2), maintaining the first language (L1), and acquiring content knowledge. However, little research has examined the opinions of the learners themselves with regard to cooperative learning together with the process of cooperative interaction. This study explores the opinions and interactions of Chinese immigrant students engaging in cooperative learning in English as a second language (ESL) classes. Drawing on qualitative research and discourse analysis traditions, the study used multiple methods of data collection in a Canadian secondary school ESL program: (1) individual interviews were carried out with 49 Chinese students; (2) 120 hours of observations in natural classroom settings were conducted; and (3) 30 hours of audio taped recordings of Chinese students' interactions during cooperative learning activities were also analyzed. The findings of the study present a complex picture of cooperative learning in the ESL classroom. The Chinese students seemed to be sitting on the horns of cooperative learning dilemmas between cooperation and individualism, between achieving results and sharing understandings of the task, and between using L1 to help with L2 / content learning and developing L2 for academic purposes. Particularly with cooperative learning goals of developing L2, maintaining L1, and acquiring content knowledge, Chinese students had difficult choices to make between developing L2 and maintaining L1, between using L1 for academic language and developing academic language in L2, and between learning content in L1 and learning content in L2. At a detailed level, tensions and dilemmas that Chinese students confronted appear to be intrinsic to the simultaneous pursuit of the three cooperative learning goals claimed for L2 learners. Cummins' (1991b, 1992) bilingual proficiency theory, which offers a possible theoretical model of how these goals are related, needs to address the various conflicts and dilemmas involved in these three cooperative learning goals. While recognizing other contributing factors, this work suggests that cooperative learning dilemmas may arise from conflicts of socially shared values and beliefs, and that discrepancies between Chinese students' home educational culture and their present Canadian secondary school culture add a layer of complexity to the dilemmatic situation of cooperative learning in an ESL context. / Education, Faculty of / Language and Literacy Education (LLED), Department of / Graduate

(1954-1974) / The Impact of "Overseas Chinese Students’ Policy" of Taiwan on the Development of Malaysian Chinese Education during 1954 and 1974

Na, Yuan Horng Unknown Date (has links)
“Overseas Chinese Students back to their homeland for studies” is the persistent policy carried out by the Taiwan authority, this is also a successful policy since the KMT government shifted to Taiwan. The implementation of this policy is to create opportunity for the underprivileged Chinese students pursuing their higher education, the significance is regarded. Among all the relationships with foreign nationalities, Malaysia Chinese society and Taiwan is intimately related. For the past fifty years, of all the numbers of overseas Chinese students, Malaysia ranked the first. After returning to their residing country, becoming the elites from all sectors and, also becoming the most powerful resources in the local Chinese community. Which implies that, they strengthen the friendship with Taiwan as well. Hence, the Malaysia Chinese education under this policy is the most successful example. This research mainly pinpoints on the role play and historical influence of Taiwan on the developing history of Malaysia Chinese education. The related study mainly emphasizes on the formulation of government policy and formation, sparsely concerns its impact or support of the residing local Chinese education. Under the subjective and objective environmental restrictions, the study focuses on the confrontation between the local Chinese education and local government. It is rarely been discussed the interaction in the overseas Chinese education between Malaysia and Taiwan. Therefore, this paper attempts to add the history of Taiwan‘s “overseas students policy” as a Vital Link for Malaysia Chinese education.

Art education in educational policies of contemporary China : roles, functions and reasons?

Peng, Lei 04 July 2018 (has links)
In a situation of important economic development carried by the efforts of several generations during the years which followed the reform policy and the opening in China, the esthetic education joins again in the Chinese education policy, having been eliminated by Mao in 1958. Therefore, the arts education, which the Chinese conception distinguishes from the esthetic education itself, also knew a development of scale. Nowadays, the arts education holds more and more the attention of the Chinese government, because of its effects in the process of the construction and the socialist modernization, as well as in the strengthening of the influence of China in the world. Through the analyses of education policies and official texts, our search consists in clearing the roles and the functions of the arts education in contemporary China and in trying to understand reasons why the Chinese government puts the accent on this educational type. This work leads us to clear and to analyze the main factors which influence and explain its development in China.
