Circus & nation : a critical inquiry into circus in its Australian setting, 1847-2006, from the perspectives of society, enterprise and culture

St Leon, Mark January 2007 (has links)
PhD / In Australia, like most countries, circus has been an element, at times a very important element, in the mosaic that constitutes its popular culture. An outgrowth of the circus as recast in a modern form in London in the 18th century, an Australian circus profession has existed almost continuously since 1847. Australia’s circus entrepreneurs took the principal features of English, and later American, circus arts and management and reworked these features to suit their new antipodean context. The athletic, intellectually undemanding nature of its equestrian-based entertainments harmonised with the emerging patterns of modern Australia’s way of life. In time, Australia produced renowned circus artists of its own, even artists capable of reinvigorating the concept of circus in the very countries from which their art had been derived. Since their transience and labours, indeed their very existence, were somehow tangential and inconsequential to mainstream Australian society, Australia’s circus people did not attract tokens of recognition in story and verse as did shearers, drovers, diggers and other identities of the Australian outback. Their contribution to Australia’s social, economic and cultural development has been largely overlooked. Despite its pervasive role in Australia’s cultural life over more than 150 years, examples of academically grounded research into Australian circus are few. The primary aim of this study is to demonstrate the major themes evident in Australia’s circus history, in terms of society, enterprise and culture, between 1847 and 2006. None of these areas, of course, is exclusive of the others, especially the first and last named. These deliberations are framed within the broader influences and events apparent in Australian society and history. Implicit within this demonstration is the notion that circus, whatever its characteristics and merits as an artform, has been, and continues to be, a ‘barometer’ of social, economic and cultural change in Australia.

Through a research amongst reports on printed media, the existing literature and interviews with some of the people who took part in the process, this work investigates the process of constitution of the first circus schools in the city of São Paulo: Piolim Academy of Circus Arts in 1978, and the Circo-Escola Picadeiro, in 1984. It also investigates the changes and transformations, both internal and external to the “method of organizing the circus work”, which contributed to the different forms of production in circus language, particularly in São Paulo. From those schools we point the groups that emerged, formed and founded by students or former students in order to explore the circus knowledge acquired in the schools and their aesthetics, proposing changes in the modes of production and creation of circus shows, as well as the method of organizing work and the way of training and learning circus. This survey allows us to discuss the concepts "representation" (DELEUZE and GUATTARI, 1992, p. 19-20) or generalizations, resulting into the "universal" labels that were created to define the circus diversity in the twentieth century, most of which related to this circus schools post-production, such as Contemporary, Traditional and New Circus, all emerging from the power and knowledge disputes between historical actors and their relationship with each other, the government and the general media. This survey allows us to discuss the concepts-representation linked to universal labels that came to the circus in the twentieth century, most of them associated with this circus of post-school production, such as Contemporary Circus, Traditional Circus and New Circus, all emerging from power and knowledge disputes between historical actors and their relationship with each other, the government and the media. In the final part, we made a gathering of the artistic career of the Circo Mínimo, the process of its constitution and an analysis of the most important works, based on the written press reactions, in the light of what has been discussed in this work so far. The work ends concluding on the diversity of the language of circus arts, since it is impossible to determine on its limits and boundaries and how recent historical conditions in Brazil, particularly the civil-military dictatorship, contributed to those changes.

A nova linguagem é denominada de Circus Time Action.

Tests constitute a significant portion of the energy expended in projects aimed at software development. It is estimated that between 30% and 50% of the total project cost is spent in testing. This need to verify the correctness of systems is quite old and in recent years the search for new techniques and tools to mitigate the effort spent on these checks has been increasing. In this context, a technique that stands out is Model Checking. This technique consists in exhaustively exploring all reachable states of a given system in order to check whether a given property, usually given in terms of some temporal logics, is valid. Several industries are interested in this technique due to the success achieved by the support of model checking tools (Model checkers) in various projects of high complexity. This paper presents a systematic way to build a LTL model checker for a subset the Circus language using its operational semantics. But instead of directly encoding the semantics using a programming language, we use the K framework because it is an executable semantic framework based on rewrite rules. Moreover, the resulting tool is exercised with few case studies in order to compare their performance as well as qualitative aspects with other model checkers.

From Contemporary Cirsuc Performance Analysis to is Aesthetic Discourse

Štefanová, Veronika January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation introduces contemporary circus as a type of dramatic art. The work thus provides a basic framework for the analysis of contemporary circus and suggests a terminology for the designation of its specific traits. This terminology is derived first and foremost from the Czech theatre studies environment. The theoretical delineation of contemporary circus stems from selected theses from Otakar Zich's The Aesthetics of Dramatic Art and Erika Fischer-Lichte's The Transformative Power of Performance: A New Aesthetics. Contemporary circus, which is depicted as belonging to several discourses - historical, aesthetic, cultural policy and pedagogical, is described from a formal as well as content-focused point of view in order to best point out how the circus element changes and takes on meaning in relation to its theatrical counterpart. The thesis is subdivided into five parts. The introduction outlines the key theme, goals and methodology as well as terminology and theories which provide the work with a suitable point of departure. The Contemporary and Traditional Circus chapter describes the history and development of traditional as well as contemporary circus in selected countries (France, Canada, USA, Scandinavia) which are considered significant within the context of circus arts...

Thermal modelling of the PICSAT nanosatellite platform and synergetic prestudies of the CIRCUS nanosatellite

Flecht, Tobias January 2016 (has links)
In the present paper, which was written in collaboration with the Observatory of Paris, thermal models of two CubeSat missions were created. The first goal of this work was to create a nodal simulation of the PicSat satellite to verify the survivability of the system within the extreme space environment. In a second step suitable countermeasures were suggested, if parts of the satellite exceeded a critical temperature limit. Additionally, the impacts of three failure modes were investigated. The second goal was to perform thermal pre-studies of different satellite configurations of the CIRCUS satellite based on the model of PicSat. The simulation conducted in this work showed that PicSat fulfils its thermal requirements, except for three components. Out of the failure modes considered in this study, only an error of the attitude determination and control systems (ADCS) showed a critical impact on the thermal state of PicSat. As the outcome of the pre-studies of CIRCUS, two of the considered configurations were recommended for further analysis. The results of this work will contribute to the future development of the PicSat and CIRCUS missions.

Musical Representations of the Gaucho and Immigrant: Navigating Identity within the Argentine Criollo Circus

Kawabata, Mitsuko 01 January 2009 (has links)
The circo criollo, or Argentine native circus, arose as one of the most important forms of popular expression during the late nineteenth century. This performance context can serve as a site for exploring old and new constructions of Argentine identity that encompassed the lower and middle classes and included native and immigrant groups, particularly in Buenos Aires. Although the native circus contributed greatly to the creation of such an identity, little is known about the musical practices of the circus itself, including what types of music or dance were performed, the manner in which they were interpreted, and how the audience responded. This thesis therefore aims to bring to light these previously obscure circus traditions. It discusses the negotiation and conflict of power relationships that informs Argentine identity construction within this popular expressive medium. By examining the circo criollo as a site of hegemonic power differentials, this study probes more deeply into the contradictions that underlie such a fragile yet persistent sense of incipient Argentine identity.
