Analysis of high plasticity clayey soil improvement at subgrade level through Portland cement added to decrease volumetric change

Castro, M., Castro, M., Navarro, J., Aybar, G., Duran, G. 28 February 2020 (has links)
This research includes the potential for resistance and the expansion that the soil presents, this evaluation was carried out through CBR tests. The soil cement technique was used to improve the physical and mechanical characteristics; this process consists in mixing the material with Portland cement type I. That combination forms soil cement 10%, 15% y 20%, which present an increase of the CBR (max: 138.7% and min: 91.9%) achieving a type of extraordinary subgrade to resist the structure of the pavement and a reduction of 7.18% in the expansion of the samples.

Stabilization of clayey soil for subgrade using rice husk ash (RHA) and sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA)

Hidalgo, F., Hidalgo, F., Saavedra, J., Fernandez, C., Duran, G. 28 February 2020 (has links)
This document studies the stabilization of the soil used as a subgrade, by adding locally available materials such as rice husk ash (RHA) and sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA). These aggregates were added to the soil in substitution by weight between 5%, 7.5% and 10%. By adding these, the expansiveness is reduced while the maximum dry density increases, in addition the tendency of CBR is increasing and then tends to decrease proportionally to the addition of the aforementioned aggregates. This indicates a peak in CBR and expandability. The best result obtained from CBR was 33.75% with the 5% replacement mixtures.

Numeric and analitic analysis of reinforcement embankments on soft clayey soil with a superficial sand layer.

Fuertes Ampuero, Milagros Victoria 13 August 2012 (has links)
Reinforced embankments on soft clayey soil where the strength increases with depth may present problems during construction process relative to failure and unexpected settlements. This study aims to evaluate the embankments behavior with a numerical study; the embankments were taken to failure in the undrained shear strength condition due to rapid upload to study the effect of reinforcement tensile stiffness on the reinforcement strains. Besides, it aimed to study the mechanism of soil-reinforcement interaction for a reinforced embankment. The method of Hinchberger & Rowe (2003) was used, which considers the displacements before and post construction. The numeric analysis of stress-strain was performed by the software PHASE 2; the calibration of the software was made according to published reinforced embankment literature. The study intends to show the influence of a sand layer above the clayey soil, on the failure height and reinforcement strains. Based on finite elements methods, a methodology was defined to estimate the reinforcement strains for a required design height and to study the stability by performing limit equilibrium analysis. Furthermore, this methodology could be used to specify the required reinforcement stiffness for a specific factor of safety.

Chemical attributes presented typicality dystrophic yellow latosols, and attributes related to the acidity showing significant results mainly in the surface layer. For biological attributes your changes are more significant in macroaggregates. Have the physical attributes that most change with inadequate management are the bulk density (Ds) and porosity consequently these physical attributes are linked to water retention in the soil and all water dynamics. For the infiltration test it is clear the presence of soil water repellency.

Contaminant Transport through Soil and Effect of Bentonite and super-absorbent Polymer on Transport Parameters

Pandey, Mandeep Raj January 2017 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this present research is to improve the containment properties of clayey soil by the use of bentonite and polymers as the additives. Clayey soils are generally used for the control of soil and water pollutions as they are inexpensive material. However, their applications are limited when it comes to durability of such liners in the field condition. Addition of additives to increase their efficiency by reducing the hydraulic conductivity can overcome this limitation. Generally, bentonite is used as the effective barrier additives because of their ability to render high swell and reduced hydraulic conductivity to the soil-bentonite mixtures. Due to high specific surface area and large cation exchange capacity, bentonite is always preferred for containment application. Despite their wide applicability in containment barrier, the problem with bentonite is its reduction of swell when the contaminant of interest consists of multivalent ions. Higher valency ions attach to the exchange site of bentonite and thus reduce its efficiency. To overcome these constraints the bentonite has, polymers are being used for containment applications. Normally, anionic polymers are used for such containment applications which help in increase negative charge concentration of the clayey soils. Previous studies have also proved the effectiveness of polymer in increasing the retardation factor of the soil which is due to the adsorption of contaminants to the negatively charged surface of clay. Hence attempt is also made in this thesis to study the effectiveness of super absorbent polymers when used as additive to the clayey soil. In this thesis, effectiveness of the local Bangalore soil for its use as barrier material is studied. Tests are done on the compacted sample to determine its contaminant transport properties. Because of their low hydraulic conductivities, advective flux through the barriers is negligible. In such cases, contaminant migration takes place due to the difference in concentration and this transport mechanism is known as diffusion. Laboratory test have been done to determine the diffusion coefficient of soil when the soil is saturated. For barriers and liner systems which are not fully saturated, suction adds to the hydraulic head. For unsaturated samples, although the liquid phase diffusion have been found to be nominal, head difference caused due to suction facilitates the migration of contaminants. Hence, effects of initial degree of saturation and density in contaminant transport process through soils have been examined. An attempt has been made to study unsaturated transport properties by using saturated transport parameters and unsaturated soil parameters obtained from soil-water characteristics curve. Another focus of this thesis has been towards enhancing the containment property of local soil by using additives. Effects of addition of bentonite and polymer on contaminant transport parameters of the soil have been studied. An attempt has been made to reduce the hydraulic conductivity of soil by using additives like bentonite. In addition, use of super-absorbent polymer as a novel material for barrier application has been studied to determine its suitability for local conditions. Experiments have been conducted to determine free swell, hydraulic conductivity and diffusion coefficient of soil-bentonite and soil-polymer mixes and compare them to those of local soil. To determine the effectiveness of soil-bentonite and soil-polymer mixes under the attack of concentrated solution over a long duration, chemical compatibility tests have been carried out. Micro-structural changes in the soil on addition of bentonite and polymer have been studied with the help of scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. Mineralogical changes occurring in the soil due to the additives have been studied using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) plots. Effects of salt solution on soil-bentonite and soil-polymer mixes have also been studied by the help of SEM images and XRD plots. The final section of this thesis is on analysis of barrier performance for different conditions of densities, compaction and saturation by using numerical software CODE_BRIGHT. Transport parameters obtained from the experiments conducted in previous sections have been used as input for the analysis. A field condition of Bingipura landfill site in South Bangalore, Bangalore city has been simulated as a case study for this thesis. Time taken for contaminants to migrate from landfill to the nearby water body which is at a distance of about 122 meters is calculated for no barrier case. When barrier is provided, concentration variations of contaminant through the barrier with time are plotted and the results are compared for soil barrier, soil-bentonite barrier and soil-polymer barrier. v

Estudo em Escala Piloto de Parâmetros de Monitoramento e Operação de Biopilhas no Tratamento de Solos Contaminados por Hidrocarbonetos de Petróleo / Operational parameters of biopiles sistems for the treatment of soils contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons

Jorge Antônio Lopes 12 December 2012 (has links)
The objective of this investigation was to identify tools and indicators suitable for monitoring and optimizing bioremediation processes, including physical, chemical and microbiological variables defined in treatability studies of crude oil contaminated clayey soils in lab-scale and to compare bioremediation strategies, such as biostimulation and bioaugmentation carried out in lab scale dynamics and static biopiles. When three methods for extraction of petroleum hydrocarbon for chromatography analysis (Soxhlet-SOX, microwaves-MARS and accelerated solvent extraction-ASE) were compared, it was concluded that the most appropriate extraction method depends on the hydrocarbon fraction of interest (n-alkanes, RPH, UCM or PAH), the textural soil characteristics (sand, silt and clay content) and the contamination age. Among the microbiological indicators investigated (total heterotrophic microorganisms-PHT, fungi population-PF and; oil-degrading microorganism population-PDO, the last one was the best indicator for degradation of organic carbon compounds such as petroleum hydrocarbon, together with CO2 generation measured through respirometric method. Bioremediation strategies for oil-contaminated clayey soil (3% m m-1) were compared, including biostimulation (adjustment of pH, C:N:P rate and moisture) and bioaugmentation (biostimulation plus a consortium inoculum extracted from the original aged-contaminated soil, enriched and acclimatized with the crude oil as carbon source) in lab scale system simulating dynamic (microcosms) and static (bioreactors with forced aeration). The treatment which presented the highest TPH removal (32%) after 121 days was the bioaugmented static biopile (BIOA B). For PAH, the most efficient treatment method that removed 33% of PAH was the biostimulated static biopile (BIOS B). The mortality rate (%) for Eisenia andrei exposed to newly contaminated soil prepared for biostimulation (BIOS) and bioaugmentation (BIOA) treatments at day 0 as well as the treated soil in static and dynamic biopiles at different treatment times (after 24, 59 and 121 days) revealed that after 56 of E. andreis exposition, all soils produced mortality of 100%, no matter if newly contaminated or treated (BIOS M, BIOS B, BIOA M, BIOA B). The ecotoxicity tests confirmed that bioremediation as such was incipient also from the toxicity removal viewpoint. In general terms, bioremediation of clayey soils with a complex contaminant such as crude oil raise considerable challenges, both from the soil characteristics as well as the nature of the contaminant. The processes are apparently slow and require auxiliary tools to speed up the process. In the future, it is recommended to test the use of different surfactants, particularly bio-surfactants.
