A Qualitative Exploration of Burnout and Self-Care Among Novice Psychotherapists

Masengo, Lydie 09 November 2022 (has links)
A gap exists in the literature exploring the burnout and self-care experiences of novice psychotherapists, despite their greater susceptibility to burnout. The aim of the present study was to begin filling the gap by exploring the lived experiences of burnout among novice psychotherapists and the self-care strategies they employed to combat burnout. Three research questions guided this exploration: (1) How do novice psychotherapists experience burnout? (2) What strategies do novice psychotherapists use to overcome their burnout? (3) How has novice psychotherapists’ self-care strategies changed as a result of experiencing burnout? Four novice psychotherapists were interviewed using a semi-structured interview protocol to gain an insight into their experiences. Using an inductive approach to Thematic Analysis, six main themes, thirteen categories and twenty-eight codes emerged. The six themes were the following: (1) The experience of burnout, which was divided into three categories and included nine codes (2) The strategies employed to combat burnout, which was divided into two categories and included seven codes (3) The meaning of self-care, which was divided into two categories and included three codes (4) Ethical considerations, which was divided into three categories and included three codes (5) Recommendations, which was divided into two categories and included five codes and (6) Looking ahead, which was divided into one category and included one code. Burnout is a debilitating experience that impact personal life, client care, and society. Discussion includes implications for novice psychotherapists, pedagogy and practice, and society.

Bestuurstrategieë vir die optimalisering van die sorgfunksie van die skoolhoof / C.P. van der Vyver

Van der Vyver, Cornelius Petrus January 2011 (has links)
Research problem This research revolved around the problem: Which management strategies could be formulated and used in the caring role of the principal with regard to the educators? Research aims Arising from the problem, the aim of the research was firstly to describe the nature and determinants of the caring role of the principal with regard to the educator. Secondly, to determine empirically to which extent school principals fulfil their caring role with regard to educators in primary schools of the North–West Province. Finally the aim was to develop management strategies in order to optimise the caring role of the principal. To address the aim of the research, a comprehensive literature review was undertaken, followed by an empirical investigation. Research methodology In the empirical investigation, quantitative methodology was used in the format of survey research, which is embedded in the post positivist paradigm. The instrument used for data collection was a postal questionnaire, based on the literature review. The validity and reliability of the instrument was determined. Collected data was analysed by means of different statistical techniques, these techniques included frequency analysis, t–tests, ANOVA's, post hoc t–tests and paired t–tests. In the discussion of the results descriptive and inferential statistics were used. Development of management strategies The results of the literature review as well as the empirical investigation were taken into account during the development of the management strategy. Separate management strategies were developed in addressing the three main determinants of the caring role, as identified in the literature review. In the management strategies, the identified problems were focussed in specific aims, which were then addressed by action steps. The success of the strategy were then determined with specific evaluation measures. Main findings Finding with regard to the expansion of the theory That the caring role of the principal establishes a managerial leadership approach within the human capital theory, where the principal cares in a self–sacrificing way about the well–being of the educator in the school as organisation. Finding with regard to the improvement of caring practice That the levels of emotional intelligence of principals need to be developed and that emotional intelligence should be taken into account during the selection process with the aim of appointment of school principals. Finding with regard to optimising the caring relationship between the principal and the educator That educators want principals to cross the professional line to a greater extent towards a more personal (work–) relationship with them. Recommendations Finally the recommendation is when new principals are appointed, apart from the usual interviews, psychological evaluations by qualified industrial psychologists should also be used. With regard to current principals, the recommendation is that they use self–evaluation questionnaires which should be filled in by both themselves and the educators. From the results of these evaluations, actions such as further psychological interventions or attending development opportunities can follow. / Thesis (Ph.D. (Education Management))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2011.

Nurses' caring labour in residential aged care : a feminist economics analysis

Adams, Valerie January 2008 (has links)
This thesis contributes to the feminist economics' literature on caring labour with an empirical study of aged care nursing. This study critiques the positivist paradigm of neoclassical economics and argues that the Cartesian dualisms deeply embedded in both neoclassical economics and medicine result in an undervaluing of caring labour. Data was collected from nurses and managers working in residential aged care facilities in metropolitan Adelaide. Qualitative methods are utilised to uncover the role of nursing culture, underpinned by notions of gender, embedded in aged care nurses' work. This study explores how dualistic constructs such as love versus money and public versus private have become central to nursing work and impact on the way nurses' work is valued in residential aged care. The feminist economics' concept of provisioning provides a framework in which nurses' work can be valued. This framework is used to present a matrix to illustrate how nurses' work crosses these dualisms and uses a 'web of meaning' as a conceptual device to explain the inter-connectedness of nurses' work. The feminist economics' concept of provisioning is used as a means of overcoming the limitations that a dualistic world view has imposed on understanding the complexities of paid caring work. The empirical evidence presented in this thesis shows that aged care nurses do both nursing work and training in unpaid time and are vulnerable to exploitation. The remuneration they are paid is inadequate when the difficulty of the work they do and the level of responsibility they take is recognised. Their work contains a strongly non-commodified element, where the development of two-way relationships between nurses and the people they care for, their relatives and friends, other staff and the wider community are important. A key conclusion is that nurses focus on the intrinsic rewards of their work, which are undermined because aged care nursing is under-resourced. In particular, nurses do not have enough time to be caring which impacts negatively on their job satisfaction and the level of care they can provide.

Supported residential facilities: supporting residents to stay or move on?

Clark, Alice January 2004 (has links)
Many Supported Residential Facility (SRF) residents express a desire to live in more independent accommodation, however relatively few achieve this. Two of the issues preventing this are a lack of housing alternatives and support. This study examines the relevant literature and legislation, to gather documentary evidence and demographic data about South Australian SRFs and their residents. This is augmented by interviews with five key informants, to discover what other factors inhibit SRF residents from moving on to alternative accommodation. Findings indicate that recovery and rehabilitation are inhibited in SRFs and that current standards are barely sustaining people. Data suggests that legislation has a negative impact on residents and service delivery. This research recommends that the South Australian Government take up its legislative and ministerial responsibility to SRFs and their residents as a matter of urgency, especially in relation to fire safety. Secondly, that there is a review of The Legislation to incorporate citizenship rights and individualised care. And lastly, that in the interim, funding tied to service agreements is made available to SRFs, so that they become a place to recover and not the end of the line.

Péče zaměřená na člověka v domově pro seniory / Person-centered Care in Residential Care Facility for the Elderly

Hrdá, Karolína January 2016 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to identify and to describe barriers to the implementation of person-centered care in specific residential care facility for the elderly. For this purpose, the author firstly conceptualizes the concept of person-centered care. Consequently, she develops the Framework for conducting research. The theoretical portion consists of five chapters. The first chapter focuses on the person- centered care concept introduction, then it describes the relationship between concepts 'individualization of care' and 'person-centered care'. In the conclusion of the first chapter, the Schema of the concept is introduced. The Schema visualizes the structure for chapters two to five. In those chapters, a description of the systems defined in the Schema is provided. Those are: Care Recipients, Direct Care Actors, and Service Providers. The end of the first part brings the topic of a suitable organizational culture. The empirical portion firstly offers the summary of the theoretical background - so follows the Framework for the consequent analysis and data interpretation - then introduces relevant aspects within researched organization, particularly within organization currently implemented a psychobiographical model of care that is the approach to person-centered care. The empirical portion...
