A search for heavy fermionic top quark partners with charge 5/3 decaying to a pair of same-sign leptons with the CMS experimentRichardson, Clint Allan 22 February 2018 (has links)
In the millennia of recorded human knowledge, no model for describing the workings of Nature is as elegant or complete as the Standard Model of Particle Physics (SM). However, the SM has several open questions and there exist multiple phenomena that it cannot explain. A pressing question is related to the mass of the Higgs boson, whose value the SM has no natural way of explaining, relying instead on the fine tuning of parameters to one part in 10^{28}. Many extensions of the SM propose new interactions and particles which solve this problem. A particularly common theme is that of new partners of the top quark, which in some models are fermionic and have vectorial couplings to the SM charged weak current. Such particles are referred to as vector-like quarks and represent a promising avenue of research.
A search is presented for a vector-like quark with an exotic 5/3 charge (in units of the charge of the positron), referred to as an X5/3 particle. These particles are predicted in Composite Higgs theories, which rely on the masses of the X5/3 to be not more than ~2 TeV in order to solve the unnaturalness inherent in the mass of the Higgs boson. The search uses data collected by the CMS experiment in both 2015 and 2016 consisting of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the CERN LHC. No significant excess of events is seen above the predicted background and limits are placed on the mass of the new top quark partner at 95% confidence level, excluding masses less than 1200 (1160) GeV for X5/3 particles that decay with right-handed (left-handed) couplings to W bosons. These are the most stringent limits to date on the mass of the X5/3 particle in this final state.

Building Syllabi for Online Classes: A Case Study of Course Management Tool Use in Online Composition CoursesJanuary 2013 (has links)
abstract: This study analyzes syllabi for first-year college composition courses and interview responses to examine how the choices made by instructors affect online course design. Using the Syllabus Assessment Instrument designed by Madson, Melchert and Whipp (2004), this dissertation looks specifically at attendance and participation policies, course behavior policies, contact information, required material choices, course organization decisions and tool decisions to reveal how instructors do or do not accommodate online class pedagogies. This study finds that the choices instructors make in syllabus design provide significant information about the overall online course design itself. Using Selber's multiliteracies as a frame for understanding the choices made by instructors, this study finds that instructors focus primarily on functional literacies in their discourses and in the way they communicate their choices to students. Instructors vary in how they inform students of the mechanics of how to interact with tools, how often to interact with the online course, and how to use the tools within the online course. While these aspects of online courses are important, focusing on these aspects of the online course overshadows alternative perspectives on tool use that could encourage critical reflection by both instructors and students. To help instructors and departments design more effective syllabi and courses, this study raises questions and offers observations about how instructors communicate policies and how they understand these policies and pedagogies in online courses. In providing general guidelines for syllabus design and course design, this study will help writing instructors and composition programs better understand the significance of the choices they make in online course design. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. English 2013

Angular Distribution of Z0 Bosons in Z+Jet Events at sqrt(S) = 7 TeVLebolo, Luis 07 November 2011 (has links)
For the first time, the Z0 boson angular distribution in the center-of-momentum frame is measured in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(S) = 7 TeV at the CERN LHC. The data sample, recorded with the CMS detector, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of approximately 36 pb-1. Events in which there is a Z0 and at least one jet, with a jet transverse momentum threshold of 20 GeV and absolute jet rapidity less than 2.4, are selected for the analysis. Only the Z0’s muon decay channel is studied. Within experimental and theoretical uncertainties, the measured angular distribution is in agreement with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions.

Podpora vývoje rozšíření PHP CMS / Tools for PHP CMS extension developmentSchmied, Martin January 2011 (has links)
This thesis seeks to improve the development process of open source content management system extensions with particular focus on functional extensions of Joomla CMS. It starts by analyzing current open source CMS market to conclude that most of it is dominated by systems implemented in the PHP programming language. Standard tools used throughout the PHP development process are then analyzed to show that fully-featured integrated development environments are not used as often as with compiled languages. It's shown, however, that modern open source IDEs can deliver performance gains even when used for development in a scripting language. The focus is then shifted from general purpose PHP development to the specifics of CMS extension development. Three major open source systems (WordPress, Drupal and Joomla) are presented with focus on their extensibility. It's demonstrated that some features of Joomla's module system, which are not present in the other systems in comparison, are making it much harder to establish an efficient development workflow that would take full advantage of an IDE. Two recommended workflows for Joomla extension development are then presented while pointing out their disadvantages. Based on this analysis, a new development workflow is designed incorporating yet-to-be-developed functional extensions of Eclipse IDE to solve the problems. The Eclipse platform is then described, pointing out some key technologies used to implement these functional extensions. Finally, major components of the implementation are described.

SEARCH FOR LEPTON FLAVOUR UNIVERSALITY VIOLATION AT THE CMS EXPERIMENTHyeon Seo Yun (17548389) 05 December 2023 (has links)
<p dir="ltr">This thesis presents two studies in search for violation of lepton flavor universality as predicted by the Standard Model. The first searches for signs of the violation by studying beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics models involving same flavor and opposite sign dilepton pair and bottom quarks as final states. This study was done using the dataset collected during years of 2016, 2017 and 2018, with center of mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV and integrated luminosity of 138 $fb^-1$. In the study, scale factors were derived in order to correct deviations between simulation and real life data, specifically for high transverse momentum muons and top\&anti-top quark background. Furthermore, lower limits of energy scale were calculated leading to exclusion of the BSM models with energy scale values lower than that of the calculated value.</p><p dir="ltr">The second study also searches for of the lepton flavor universality violation, but in the specific decay of a tauon into three muons ($\tau \rightarrow 3\mu$). In the study, graph based neural network model (GNN) designed to classify $\tau \rightarrow 3\mu$ events at the CMS detector was converted to high level synthesis (HLS) code, so that the GNN could be coded into a custom hardware such as field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) for deployment. Moreover, techniques such as pruning and quantization were applied in an attempt to make the GNN more light weight, due to strict requirements of FPGA.</p>

En demonstrationswebbplats skapad i WM3 för WM3 / A demo site created with WM3 for WM3Erika, Krauser January 2016 (has links)
In order to recruit customers to WM3, the sellers of HL Design have for a while been wishing for a demonstration site. Therefore, this thesis and projekt goal have been to create such a site in WM3. WM3 is a CMS created by HL design and includes eleven different modules and features like; live editing, articles and calendars. The site will therefore include these modules that WM3 offers in except for two; the webshop and statistics-module. The site will also be user friendly, responsive, accessible, and it will be easy to navigate in it. Interest in WM3 has grown and grown during the project. The reason has been the ease and userfriendliness of WM3, both for developers and potential customers. As manager and developer of this thesis and projekt the tasks consisted of devoloping the site accourding to a plan and creating the plan to; demonstrate how the site should look like in terms of design, how the modules should be presented and how the structure of the website should look like. The result of this projekt and theises is a complete demonstration site for a fictitious law firm where all modules except the webshop and statistics, are used and presented.
