Coastal regions are extensively utilized by constructing coastal structures and facilities, as a result of the economical potential they offer. In designing and construction of coastal structures, it is important to achieve an optimum design satisfying both the stability and the engineering economy requirements effectively, regarding the natural balance of the coastal region.
In this study, first step model tests on the stability of the coastal protection structures of Eastern Black Sea Highway Project under construction, proved that the structure is not stable and safe under severe wave action. As an innovative approach, using Van der Meer& / #8217 / s approach and berm design guidelines alternative cross sections were generated.In the second step of the model studies, 8 different models were constructed using a model scale of 1/31.08 and they were tested both for breaking and non-breaking waves. The experiments took place in the Coastal and Harbor Engineering Laboratory of the Middle East Technical University, Civil Engineering Department. The newly designed and optimized berm type structure was proved to be successful and economical.

An Economical Analysis Of Alternative Eastern Black Sea Coastal Highway Defense StructuresTaskiran, Inanc 01 January 2003 (has links) (PDF)
In order to analyze the stability of Eastern Black Sea Coastal Highway defense structures constructed with natural stone armor layers, hydraulic model tests were performed under both breaking and non-breaking waves. Eight different alternative cross-sections of the defense structures were constructed in the wave flume in Coastal and Harbor Engineering Laboratory, Civil Engineering Department, METU. Water depth was kept constant at a depth of 7.5 m in front of the structures. Model scale, & / #955 / L, was calculated as 1:31.08 using Froude Law. Experiments were carried out for wave heights, H, ranging between 3 &ndash / 7 m. with a wave period ranging between 6 &ndash / 11 sec in prototype. A comparative economical analysis of the alternative cross-sections of the defense structures has proven that cost (per meter) differs almost 50% between the alternative cross-sections.

This paper analyzes the fundamental maritime defense mentality that permeated America throughout the early part of the Republic. For fear of economic debt and foreign wars, Thomas Jefferson and his Republican party, opposed the construction of a formidable blue water naval force. Instead, they argued for a small naval force capable of engaging the Barbary pirates and other small similar forces. For protection of the nation and commerce, they wanted a strictly defensive strategy developed around coastal gunboats and harbor fortifications. This research will analyze the naval aspect of this defense mentality from its creation in 1794, through the War of 1812. The coastal defense analysis will begin at the same time and conclude with the end of the American Civil War.

Coastal defense structures are built in order to protect valuable coastal regions from the destructive effects of the waves. Due to the cost of coastal defense structures and the economical potential of the coastal regions, failure of such structures could cause loss of high amounts of investment. Therefore in the design and construction of coastal structures, it is of vital importance to achieve an optimum design which is not neither underdesigned nor overdesigned.
In this study, Submerged Berm type coastal defense structures with several different cross-sections were tested for stability under storm conditions. Damage analyses of the different models were carried out to compare the structure characteristics under storm conditions and to obtain the most economical and stable cross-section.
For the model studies, 5 different models were constructed by using Van der Meer&rsquo / s approach and berm design guidelines. Models were constructed with a model scale of 1:31.08 in the wave flume in the Coastal and Harbor Engineering Laboratory, Civil Engineering Department, METU. The newly designed and optimized berm type structure was proved to be successful and economical.

At the Heart of the Critical Vulnerability : Exploring Organizational and Technological Flexibility in Coastal Defense Anti-Ship Missile WarfareLinell, Jan-Erik January 2022 (has links)
In coastal defense operations, anti-ship missile (ASM) attacks on amphibious assault high value targets (HVT) constitutes a window of opportunity with decisive potential. However, in war, the availability and performance of ASM-forces is uncertain and most likely less than ideal. This thesis explores how organizational and technological flexibility can be a solution to such uncertainties. This is achieved by modeling representative examples of weapon redundancy, weapon versatility, and a flexible balance between offensive and defensive powers. A Two-Layer Defense HVT Acquisition Missile Salvo Model is developed, as an extension of Hughes Missile Salvo Model, to enable detailed study of sub-saturation attacks that rely on missiles leaking through target defenses. The result of this study shows that organizational and technological flexibility can potentially enhance ASM-attacks directed at the HVTs of an amphibious assault in multiple ways. Mentionable key-findings are that additional ways of challenging target defenses, additional firepower, and increased lethality through characteristics such as precision will create tolerance to loss and tactical benefits.

A History of the United States Caribbean Defense Command (1941-1947)Vasquez, Cesar A 25 March 2016 (has links)
The United States Military is currently organized along the lines of regional combatant commands (COCOMs). Each COCOM is responsible for all U.S. military activity in their designated area of responsibility (AOR). They also deal with diplomatic issues of a wide variety with the countries within their respective AORs. Among these COCOMs, Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), whose AOR encompasses all of Central and South America (less Mexico) and the Caribbean, is one of the smallest in terms of size and budget, but has the longest history of activity among the COCOMs as it is the successor to the first joint command, the United States Caribbean Defense Command (CDC 1941-1947).
Existing from 1941 to 1947, the CDC was tasked with protecting the Panama Canal, the Canal Zone, and all its access points as well as defending the region from Axis aggression and setting up a series of U.S. bases throughout the Caribbean from which to project U.S. military power after World War II. Throughout its short history, however, the CDC was plagued with the same types of resource scarcity that its successor commands would later experience. Early successes, as well as the progress of the war saw to it that the original mission of the Command was quickly rendered moot. Ironically, it was partially the success of the U.S. war effort that kept the CDC from ever reaching its full potential. Nevertheless, the CDC evolved into something different than had originally been envisioned. In the end, it became the model that other COCOMs would follow after November 1947 when the system of regional combatant commands was formally established. Although some research has been conducted into the history of these commands, this dissertation is the first academic attempt to chronicle the history of the United States Caribbean Defense Command.
Research into this topic involved combing through the Archives of the United States Southern Command in its offices in Miami, Florida (SOUTHCOM Archives), as well as the CDC archives in Record Group 548 in the U.S. National Archives II in Suitland, Maryland. Secondary sources as well as references regarding treaties and international agreements were also consulted as necessary.
