COBOL is an old programming language that, despite its age, is still used in many different areas, such as financial and insurance administration. The Swedish Companies Registration Office, also known as Bolagsverket is no exception. This agency administers information regarding Swedish companies and associations. Although the COBOL programs work, they have many disadvantages. The system is both expensive, inflexible and there are very few new developers available. Bolagsverket would therefore gladly replace COBOL with a more flexible and affordable alternative. This thesis will study and present some solutions and also provide actual examples of how they can be used. Two different products have been studied; Oracle SALT and Micro Focus Visual COBOL. SALT offers a web service interface, which enables the users to access services related to the COBOL programs remotely via the Internet or other networks. Visual COBOL, on the other hand, compiles the code into low-level code and deploys it onto new platforms. Both products can make the use of the code in a more flexible manner. Visual COBOL has, however, more substantial and long-term functionality that Bolagsverket is very interested in pursuing, even though it costs five times as much as SALT. One other main reason is that the second product can drastically reduce the gap between the COBOL programs and the surrounding systems. It is even possible to save money since some components can be reduced or even completely removed. The final conclusion is that neither of the programs offers any pure replacement with regards to COBOL, but they have made the language much more adapted to twenty-first century computer systems. They are therefore considered as a good option instead of rewriting the entire COBOL code into a new language. / COBOL är ett gammalt programmeringsspråk som trots sin ålder fortfarande används inom många olika områden, såsom administration inom finans- och försäkringsbranschen. Bolagsverket i Sverige är inget undantag. Den här myndigheten hanterar information rörande de företag och föreningar som finns i Sverige. Även om COBOL-programmen fungerar som det ska finns det många nackdelar. Det är dyrt, inte särskilt medgörligt och dessutom finns det få nya utvecklare att tillgå. Bolagsverket skulle därför gärna vilja byta ut programmen mot något mer flexibelt och prisvärt alternativ. Det här examensarbetet kommer presentera några aktuella lösningar. Kodexempel kommer också att skapas för att visa hur detta kan användas i praktiken. Två olika produkter kommer att behandlas i rapporten; Oracle SALT och Micro Focus Visual COBOL. SALT erbjuder ett gränssnitt för webtjänster. Det möjliggör att användarna kan komma åt tjänster knutna till COBOL programmen, fast på distans, via exempelvis Internet eller något annat nätverk. Visual COBOL har i sin tur en helt annan lösning, nämligen kompilering av COBOL till ett lågnivåspråk som går att använda på flera nya plattformar. Både produkterna erbjuder stora möjligheter i att göra COBOL mer flexibelt. Visual COBOL har däremot mer omfattande och långsiktiga funktioner som Bolagsverket kan tänkas gå vidare med, trots att det kostar fem gånger så mycket som SALT. En annan fördel med Visual COBOL är att flera delar av arkitekturen kan komma att användas mindre, eller till och med avvecklas helt, och kan således även sänka kostnaderna. Slutsatserna som kan dras är att ingen av produkterna byter ut COBOL helt, däremot kan de göra det gamla programmeringsspråket mer anpassat för 2000-talets moderna datorsystem. De betraktas därmed som fullt dugliga alternativ istället för en total omskrivning av COBOL-koden till ett annat språk.

Com esse propósito, uma ferramenta denominada POKE-TOOL [MAL89,CHA91b], que apóia a utilização dos critérios Potenciais Usos [MAL88, MAL91], foi configurada para a linguagem COBOL. São abordados: a caracterização de unidade em programas COBOL; a abstração das estruturas de controle que compõem essa linguagem; o fluxo de dados presente em programas COBOL; e aspectos referentes à Instrumentação de programas COBOL. A discussão ressalta a não trivialidade dessas tarefas: por exemplo, a inexistência de estrutura de bloco na linguagem COBOL dificulta a atividade de Instrumentação de código fonte. Como produto principal desta dissertação, a versão operacional da POKE-TOOL para a linguagem COBOL constitui uma contribuição importante no sentido de apoiar o teste estrutural de unidades escritas em linguagem COBOL / Abstract: This work explores the issues involved in applying data flow based structural testing in COBOL programs; a tool named POKE-TOOL [MAL89,CHA91b] that supports Potential Uses Criteria appllcation [MAL88, MAL91] was configured for the COBOL programming language. The following topics are discussed: characterization of units in COBOL; abstraction of control flow structures; data flow in COBOL and program instrumentation. The presentation points out that these tasks are non-trivial: for example, the lack of block structuring in COBOL makes difficult the instrumentation of source code. As the main product of this thesis, the operational version of the POKE-TOOL for COBOL language constitute an important contribution to structural testing of units implemented in COBOL / Mestrado / Mestre em Engenharia Elétrica

El presente proyecto de fin de carrera corresponde al desarrollo de una infraestructura de software para realizar pruebas automatizadas de sistemas de información desarrollados en lenguaje cobol en el contexto bancario. La propuesta de esta infraestructura surge como resultado del análisis de la realidad del proceso de pruebas dentro del área de Certificación de un banco. La infraestructura propuesta es configurable, escalable y adaptable para las diferentes versiones de cobol con las que se cuenten. El presente documento ha sido estructurado en 7 capítulos como se describe a continuación: En el capítulo 1 se presenta la problemática de donde se extrajo el problema que tuvo como resultado la propuesta del presente proyecto de fin de carrera, el objetivo general, objetivos específicos y resultados esperados. Se detallan las metodologías utilizadas en el proyecto tanto metodologías del proceso de construcción como la gestión del proyecto. Finalmente se menciona el alcance y limitaciones. En el capítulo 2 se presentan los conceptos y definiciones escenciales para el desarrollo del proyecto. En el capítulo 3 se revisan las soluciones actuales al problema identificado, se mencionan herramientas y finalmente se hace una comparación entre ellas. En el capítulo 4 se mencionan los requerimientos funcionales y no funcionales de la infraestructura. En el capítulo 5 se presenta la arquitectura de la solución, así como diagramas de actores entre otros, que permitirán comprender la forma de la infraestructura. En el capítulo 6 se presenta las distintas funcionalidades de la infraestructura ayudado de capturas de pantalla. En el capítulo 7 se presentan las observaciones, conclusiones y recomendaciones del presente proyecto de fin de carrera. / Tesis

This Essay is meant to look into the possibilities of the mainframe systems and whether they have a spot as one of the leading information system service providers in the foreseeable future. In conclusion, “How does the future of the mainframe look?”. Numerous big IT media providers such as news services, blogs and forums have written about the subject of whether the mainframe is going to last as one of the go-to platforms for core operation information systems. This essay is going to look into the actual state of the mainframe, and where the mainframe is heading in the future. It also delves further into what options there currently are to the mainframe platform and why these options might be better or worse than the mainframe.To answer these questions the essay will present the results of research from multiple large international companies such as IBM, Ericsson and Volvo. During these interviews questions have been answered about the current situation of the mainframe, why it is currently suffering from rumors about being on the brink of death, and what the companies actually think about the mainframe.The Essay does not look too deeply into the technical aspects of the mainframe platform, but more at the system as a whole, and its organizational impact in larger companies. To help do this the essay makes use of the DeLean and McLone model of information system success.As with all matters regarding the future, even this essay could not with certainty state exactly what will happen with the mainframe platform in the future. However multiple interesting conclusions were made about the future and alternatives of the mainframe.

Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI) has been in the process of development for over ten years, but the actual usage of the method is still not yet very widespread.The author, however, proposes to use this method to teach COBOL to Business Administration students as an optional course at the College of Arts, Science and Technology in Jamaica and is therefore developing this package for her creative project.The package will require in excess of 4,000 man hours to complete. However, the author will do the necessary research and implement the framework of the software along with some lessons to demonstrate the techniques which will be used throughout the software.
