The Minute Tree-Fungus Beetles (Coleoptera: Ciidae) from the Caspian-Hyrcanian Forest in Northern Iran

Rezaei, Reza 04 September 2020 (has links)
Ciidae is a fairly homogenous family of mycetobiont, mycetophagous beetles (Coleoptera, infraorder Cucujiformia), with a worldwide distribution and about 750 described species. They have a body length of 0.5‒7 mm, a mostly uniform colouration from light brown to almost black, and usually a fairly cylindrical body shape. The knowledge on the taxonomy, morphology, phylogenetic relationships, geographic distribution (faunistics), and ecology of Ciidae is quite fragmentary. Part I of the thesis provides the first detailed study of head morphology (by scanning electron microscopy) in a Ciidae species: Cis chinensis. Many new structural elements are detected and named to ease their use in more sophisticated forthcoming taxonomic work. Most head characters are compared with Ciidae from genera Ennearthron, Octotemnus, Ropalodontus, and Xylographus, with a focus on the area between compound eye and buccal cavity. This revealed a great uniformity, with a near-identical structuring of subantennal groove, margin of buccal cavity, anterior tentorial pit, and first antennomere (scapus). A comparison with Tenebrio molitor from the closely related Tenebrionidae (data from the literature) revealed great similarity, but also differences in some characters, such as the absence of a subantennal groove. Part II presents the first study of the Ciidae fauna of the Caspian (or Hyrcanian) Forest of northern Iran, a region known to have conserved much pre-Pleistocene fauna and flora. In 2010‒2018, Ciidae were sampled in 62 localities across the Iranian provinces Gilan, Mazandaran, and Golistan, from below sea level on the Caspian Sea southern coast up to near 2000 m a.s.l. on the northern slopes of the Alborz Mountains. 19 Ciidae species were identified in the basidiomes of 31 species of bracket fungi (Basidiomycetes: mainly Polyporales, Hymenochaetales, and Russulales-Stereaceae). For all Ciidae species taxonomically relevant morphological features are described and illustrated; the distribution over collecting localities and occurrence in host fungus species are given. An identification key for the species of the area is given. The identification of species is discussed, as well as some morphological characters and their systematic implications, the distribution and ecology of the individual species (especially the pest species Cis chinensis), the evidence from overall patterns with regard to geographic and elevational distribution and fungus host ranges, and evidence on possible faunal links. No previously undescribed Ciidae species was found, but most species are new for Iran. Illustrations are provided for morphological characters, distribution in the area (maps), and coexistence of species (column diagrams).:Abstract 7 Kurzfassung 7 Key words 8 List of figures and tables 9 List of abbreviations 13 Introduction to Ciidae 16 Taxonomy and systematics of Ciidae 16 Ecology and faunistics of Ciidae 19 Part I: External Head Morphology of Cis chinensis 22 1. Média jako prostor k poznávání světa / Media as Space to the Knowledge of World

Kuklová, Jana January 2015 (has links)
Doctoral dissertation: Media as Space to the Knowledge of World Author: Jana Kuklová ABSTRACT: The present doctoral thesis deals with the question of the media as an epistemological tool. The media close world in presentation and transform the horizon of human existence. The author develops the Flusser's concept of apparatus and of the universe of technical images. This dissertation shows that people use media without understanding them. Person understands himself only as an object of oparation. Media are based on the essence of techniques - Gestell. This thesis introduces the concept of technical space which helps people to understand the scope of the media as a system. The author believes that it is necessary to change our dealings with the media to live in freedom, not the totality. KEYWORDS: Media - Wilém Flusser - apparatus - "Gestell" - Technology - Operation - Coexistence

BROTHERLANDS TO BLOODLANDS: ETHNIC GERMANS AND JEWS IN SOUTHERN UKRAINE, LATE TSARIST TO POSTWAR

Amber N. Nickell (11109429) 26 July 2021 (has links)

Ethnic Germans and Jews lived alongside one another in Southern Ukraine for over a century prior to the Holocaust. They were as Shimon Redlich observes of Jewish-Gentile relations in his Polish hometown, "together and apart." Both groups started out the twentieth century closer together than they had ever been, and interactions between them were and remained comparatively normalized and less violent than Jews' experiences with the other groups surrounding them on Ukraine's pre-Revolutionary landscape. Yet, by 1941, with the joint Romanian-German occupation of the region, ethnic Germans enthusiastically plundered, exploited, and murdered their Jewish neighbors with little prodding from the Romanian and Nazi occupation regimes. How did over a century of ethnic German-Jewish coexistence devolve into local violence? Which historical processes fueled some ethnic Germans' conversion from neighbors to murderers, and when exactly did this transition begin?

This project examines coexistence, confluence, and conflict between ethnic Germans and their Jewish neighbors in Southern Ukraine from the late Tsarist period through the Holocaust. It builds upon the work of formidable scholars like Jan Gross, Jan Grabowski, Jeffrey Kopstein and Jason Wittenberg, Timothy Snyder, Wendy Lower, Karl Berkhoff, Eric Steinhart, and Doris Bergen, all of which examine the impact of double, sometimes triple or more, occupations on intergroup relationships and/or local collaboration in occupied territories. However, unlike many of these case studies, which root collaborators’ motives in the years immediately predating the war, or in the war itself, this project seeks to understand the impact of decades of occupation and revanchist policies (Austro-German, Soviet, Romanian, Nazi) on the groups’ interactions with and perceptions of one another. Moreover, as opposed to splitting the region into two separate entities, as the Romanian and Nazi regimes did, this project illuminates some of the continuities across the river Buh, as lived and died, by ethnic Germans and Jews in Ukraine prior to and during the Holocaust. This longue durée analysis illuminates the roles sustained violence and occupational policies played in disrupting centuries of interactions between ethnic Germans and Jews. By 1941, the two groups had been violently reconfigured, pulled together, and pushed apart in profoundly consequential ways. The Nazi and Romanian occupiers, equipped with vernaculars of violence and nation erected by the Soviet state and its predecessors, capitalized on ongoing historical processes, quickly incorporating ethnic Germans into their genocidal machine.

Sudety v proměnách času - stav občanské společnosti v Sudetech (obec Mařenice) / The Sudetenland trough the ages - the state of civil society in the Sudetenland (Mařenice village)

Krsová, Barbora January 2011 (has links)
This thesis deals with the status of civil society in the Sudetenland. The issue of living in the borderlands is examined in the context of historical events and is related with political, cultural and social transformations. Theoretical work is focused both on defining the problem of the Sudetenland and the traditions of thought to grasp the concept of civil society on the basis of which is derived the current definition of civil society and its other prerequisites. The first part of the theoretical work maps the development of civil sector and the importance of community life in the context of Czech historical events, the second discusses the development of Czech-German coexistence with emphasis on the interwar and postwar events and developement. The practical part, which carries a crucial part of field research, is based on interviews with local natives, new immigrants and cottagers. The work involves presentation of NGO's, which is operating in the lokality as an important indicator of the state of civil society. Conclusion of the work presents the results of the analysis of interviews that have interpretive value of the current state of civil society in the Sudetenland. Key words Civil society, the Sudetenland, settlement, borderland, Czech-German coexistence, community activities

Reduction of Competition Between Bisexual and Unisexual Females of Poecilia in Northeastern Mexico

Balsano, Joseph S., Kucharski, Kristine, Randle, Edward J., Rasch, Ellen M., Monaco, Paul J. 01 February 1981 (has links)
Breeding compexes of poeciliid fishes with a bisexual and two unisexual species were studied for mechanisms permitting Sympatric coexistence. The unisexuals are gynogenetic and thereby sexually dependent on the males of the bisexual species for sperm to initiate development, but inheritance is entirely maternal. Bisexual females are more abundant in headwater localities; unisexuals increase in downstream localities. Males were 10 - 18% of the total poeciliid population, regardless of the relative proportions of bisexual to unisexual females. Downstream localities were typified by greater habitat diversity, including a variety of backwater pools. The unisexuals showed a marked preference for such pools. Both field and laboratory studies showed that all three types of females as well as males preferred shaded areas with a gravel substrate. Although the four types of fish were found together, nearest neighbour data indicated that each type of female preferred its own kind. Males courted throughout the year and were indiscriminate in their choice of mates. Despite the skewed sex ratio, males were not in short supply because only a few females were sexually receptive at a given time. No significant differences existed between bisexuals and unisexuals in their relative reproductive outputs, but they were asynchronous.

Reprodukční interakce mezi diploidy a triploidy šmelu okoličnatého (Butomus umbellatus) a jejich evoluční potenciál pro zprostředkování genového toku / Reproductive interactions between diploids and triploids of flowering rush (Butomus umbellatus) and their evolutionary potential for mediating inter-ploidy gene flow

Petříková, Eliška January 2021 (has links)
Contact zones of cytotypes harbour a unique opportunity to study the dynamics and evolution of mixed-ploidy systems. Butomus umbellatus (flowering rush) is one of a few species in which diploid and triploid cytotype is present in nature. The first known mixed-ploidy populations of B. umbellatus were discovered in south-eastern Slovakia during the previous studies. Common occurrence of the species in an area with substantially natural dynamics of wetland ecosystems represents a unique model system for unbiased comparisons of traits and genetic diversity between diploid and triploid individuals along with their dispersal capabilities on a landscape level. The main aim of of this thesis is to uncover the truth behind evolutionary processes that are taking place in the contact zone of diploid and triplioid cytotype of B. umbellatus in south-eastern Slovakia. Using flow cytometry and molecular methods (microsatellites) we will test whether this is a primary or secondary contact zone and assess the level of genetic variability between individuals and populations of both cytotypes. Using the analysis od microsatellite loci we discovered that the contact zone of cytotype is of both primary and secondary character and gene flow between cytotypes was also detected. These results were supported by high production and...

The first purpose of this paper is to analyze the current situation and issues of multicultural co-existence education in Japanese elementary schools. And the second one is to devise and present, through theoretical approaches and social experiments, an educational program that can enable children with different linguistic and/or cultural backgrounds to promote mutual understanding among them. The originality of the programs created by the author has been embodied in "the figure drawing plays." This program was implemented as a social experiment, and the author successfully led the perspective as a conclusion that, by integrating these programs into a model for innovation, it will be possible to develop more effective and sustainable multicultural co-existence education programs that may empower children to accept the others. / 博士(ソーシャル・イノベーション) / Doctor of Philosophy in Social Innovation / 同志社大学 / Doshisha University
