Diferenças em resolução de problemas e inovação comportamental de lagartos Tropidurus torquatus (Squamata: Tropiduridae) residentes de diferentes tipos de territórios / Differences in problem-solving and behavioral innovation in Tropidurus torquatus (Squamata: Tropiduridae) lizards resident from different types of territories

Rodrigues, André Vieira 06 May 2015 (has links)
Behavioral flexibility is the ability of behavioral adjustments that allow individuals to respond to a new environmental challenge by either modifying their responses or developing new strategies when facing novel stimuli. This new behavior may be target of natural selection, despite not being heritable. What is transferred to the next generation is the capacity to adjust behavior. Thus, it is plausible to assume the existence of an association between cognitive capabilities and environmental severity. In this context, it is expected that territorial individuals exhibit cognitive capabilities associated with their specific habitat. Studies have often been focused on differences of problem-solving capabilities in animals from different species and populations. Nevertheless, the present study compares problem-solving abilities of Tropidurus torquatus lizards from the same population that use two types of territories that differ in the level of harshness: house walls, a harsh environment, and trees, a mild environment. This species exhibits a territorial system where dominant males and associated females have an evident fidelity to their territories. Lizards were observed in the field for territory characterization and then performed problem-solving tests in the laboratory. The results show that lizards from harsh environments outperformed those from mild environments in the problem-solving tasks and were more likely to show a behavioral innovation when solving the task. Interpretations for these results resides on two possible explanations. Lizards from walls might benefit from enhanced cognitive capabilities because natural selection acted on behavioral flexibility and selected individuals that can deal with problems of a harsh environment. Alternatively, it is possible that the majority of Tropidurus torquatus lizards exhibit enhanced problem-solving capability, but this characteristic might be cryptic, and only the interaction between the individual and living in a harsh environment (walls) induces the emergence of enhanced cognitive capabilities. These findings probably indicate that differences in problem-solving and cognitive capabilities might be exposed to specific selective regimes even before population segregation occurs.

This study investigated the impact of business analytical intelligence capabilities on the expansion of managerial cognitive capabilities, orienting decision making (based on data) in an agile (dynamic) way, to improve organizational performance management. The phenomenon was explained according to the theoretical perspective of dynamic capabilities. For the definition of the constructs, the theoretical elements regarding business analytical intelligence capabilities and decision making were also reviewed. A mixed-method research was carried out in two stages. The first, which was exploratory, was conducted through interviews with 10 managers and allowed the mapping of relationships and identification of variables, allowing the development of the quantitative instrument. The second, which was confirmatory, was performed through a survey with 366 interviewees, which results were analyzed to validate the research instrument and measure the impact through the modeling of a structural equation, confirming 5 of the 7 hypotheses defined in the conceptual model. The heart of the discussion lies in the explanation of the impact of business analytical intelligence capabilities on decision making, in which the findings evidence significant impact of managerial analytical intelligence capabilities, governance and the processing of big data, and advanced business analytics. This research contributes to the theory by explaining business analytical intelligence capabilities as dynamic capabilities, as well as by developing and validating an instrument for the integrated measurement of these capabilities. For the managerial field, this study points out directions and recommendations when indicating potentialities and limitations for the development of these capabilities.

Intercultural competence as a conductive factor of managers' readiness for organizational change / La compétence interculturelle comme facteur contribuant de la disposition des gestionnaires au changement organisationnel

Vallejo Garcia, Jose Luis 23 May 2012 (has links)
The object of this thesis is to discover the intercultural competencies that determine manager’s readiness for organizational change. Through the analysis of twelve main hypotheses; regarded as intercultural competence; involving cognitive capabilities, emotional abilities and behavioural/social skills in managers; and their influence on readiness for change, the procedure to validate the general hypothesis includes an electronic self-administered questionnaire and a total of five hundred and fifty seven respondents from sixty-eight different nationalities. The respondents are managers of corporations who hold strategic, tactical or operational management positions; that is, managers who are responsible for long-term planning, progress monitoring, or day-to-day operational supervision. The understanding of the concept of intercultural competence is a central aspect in this dissertation and therefore the theoretical part has been written discretionarily by the researcher concerning the selected references upon which the conceptual framework was built. An empirical part is supported with a quantitative methodological analysis in order to prove that there is a significant positive correlation between intercultural competence and managers’ readiness for organizational change.
