Optimal color channel combination across skin tones for remote heart rate measurement in camera-based photoplethysmography

Objective: The heart rate is an essential vital sign that can be measured remotely with camera-based photoplethysmography (cbPPG). Systems for cbPPG typically use cameras that deliver red, green, and blue (RGB) channels. The combination of these channels has been proven to increase signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and heart rate measurement accuracy (ACC). However, many combinations remain untested, the comparison of proposed combinations on large datasets is insufficiently investigated, and the interplay with skin tone is rarely addressed. Methods: Eight regions of interest and eight color spaces with a total of 25 color channels were compared in terms of ACC and SNR based on the Binghamton-Pittsburgh-RPI Multimodal Spontaneous Emotion Database (BP4D+). Additionally, two systematic grid searches were performed to evaluate ACC in the space of linear combinations of the RGB channels. Results: Glabella and forehead regions of interest provided highest ACC (up to 74.1 %) and SNR (> -3 dB) with the hue channel H from HSV color space and the chrominance channel Q from NTSC color space. The grid searches revealed a global optimum of linear RGB combinations (ACC: 79.2 %). This optimum occurred for all skin tones, although ACC dropped for darker skin tones. Conclusion: Through systematic grid searches we were able to identify the skin tone independent optimal linear RGB color combination for measuring heart rate with cbPPG. Our results proved on a large dataset that the identified optimum outperformed conventionally used color channels. Significance: The presented findings provide useful evidence for future considerations of algorithmic approaches for cbPPG.

The contribution of human cortical area V3A to the perception of chromatic motion: a transcranial magnetic stimulation study

No / Area V3A was identified in five human subjects on both a functional and retinotopic basis using functional magnetic resonance imaging techniques. V3A, along with other visual areas responsive to motion, was then targeted for disruption by repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) whilst the participants performed a delayed speed matching task. The stimuli used for this task included chromatic, isoluminant motion stimuli that activated either the L-M or S-(L+M) cone-opponent mechanisms, in addition to moving stimuli that contained only luminance contrast (L+M). The speed matching task was performed for chromatic and luminance stimuli that moved at slow (2 degrees/s) or faster (8 degrees/s) speeds. The application of rTMS to area V3A produced a perceived slowing of all chromatic and luminance stimuli at both slow and fast speeds. Similar deficits were found when rTMS was applied to V5/MT+. No deficits in performance were found when areas V3B and V3d were targeted by rTMS. These results provide evidence of a causal link between neural activity in human area V3A and the perception of chromatic isoluminant motion. They establish area V3A, alongside V5/MT+, as a key area in a cortical network that underpins the analysis of not only luminance but also chromatically-defined motion.

For example, automatic mahjong machine in China. Inspired by the automatic mahjong machine, we propose to add some devices on the billiard table to achieve sorting balls automatically. It includes recognition system, ball-separating system, and sorting system. We use Autodesk Inventor 2012 to model the billiards table. Some complex calculations and nonlinear analysis are completed by Matlab. Through our method, we can achieve the purpose of sorting balls automatically. / Med utvecklingen av samhället, människor är mer villiga att fokusera på sina fritidsaktiviteter. Ett växande antal av ny utrustning skapas nuförtiden. Till exempel, automatisk mahjong maskin i Kina. Inspirerad av den automatiska mahjong maskin, föreslår vi att lägga till några enheter på biljardbordet för att uppnå sorterings bollar automatiskt. Den innehåller igenkänningssystem, boll-separerar systemet, och sorteringssystem. Vi använder Autodesk Inventor 2012 för att modellera tabellen biljard. A process for evaluating the benefits of near-infrared reflective roof coatings used on asphalt shingle roofs

Reflective roof coatings keep the roof cooler by minimizing solar absorption and maximizing thermal emission. Keeping the surface of the roof cooler allows less heat to be conducted into the interior of the building which reduces the cooling load in air-conditioned buildings and improve comfort conditions in non-air conditioned buildings. A number of cool white materials, compatible with most roofing products, are available on the market. To appeal to homeowners, special cool “color” products have been developed to match the dark colors of conventional residential roofs but are highly reflective in the invisible near-infrared (NIR) spectrum. Although many studies highlight the benefits of cool white coatings on roof membranes of low-slope roofs, knowledge of NIR reflective coatings on asphalt shingles of steep slope roofs remains limited. The intent of this exploratory study is to present a process that can be used to evaluate the perceived and actual benefits of NIR coatings field-applied to asphalt shingles on single-family houses. The proposed process can be applied to a large sample of homes and occupants in a future study. A questionnaire was designed to attempt to evaluate occupants’ perceived benefits in regards to their indoor environment and occupant satisfaction following applications of NIR coatings. Along with subjective data collection, a field-experiment was developed to objectively compare the thermal performance of an NIR reflective field-coated asphalt shingle roof system with that of a conventional asphalt shingle roof system. Questionnaire results indicated that occupants did not perceive any significant changes to their indoor environment but were satisfied overall with the application and appearance of the roof coating. Additionally, 50% of occupants stated that their monthly energy costs somewhat decreased after the application. Interestingly, 63% of respondents experienced some form of roof leak following the coating application. Among those who experienced roof leaks, 100% of the roofs were 10 years or older. Field results showed that the coated roof surface was 2 to 5℉ cooler than the uncoated roof surface at midafternoon. Statistical testing for correlation between coated roof surface temperature and external conditions revealed that relative humidity was negatively correlated with coated roof temperature, while solar altitude angle was positively correlated with coated roof temperature. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to develop a model for predicting the surface temperature of the coated asphalt shingle roofs from the ambient temperature, sky conditions, dew point temperature, relative humidity, solar altitude and azimuth angle.

Effects of Zilpaterol hydrochloride feeding duration on color of beef and Holstein semimembranosus steaks packaged in PVC and MAP systems

Hunt / The objective of this study was to determine the effects of Zilmax® feeding duration (7.56 g/ton Zilmax for 0, 20, 30, or 40 d) on color development and stability of crossbred beef (B) and Holstein (H) semimembranosus (SM) steaks packaged in polyvinyl chloride overwrap (PVC), high-oxygen (80% O2, 20% CO2, HiOx) modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), and low-oxygen (0.4% CO, 30% CO2, 69.6% N2, LoOx) MAP. A 7.62-cm thick portion from beef and Holstein SM muscles (n = 120 total, 30 from each feeding duration) was removed, vacuum packaged, and stored until d 21 when two, 2.54-cm thick steaks were cut, overwrapped with PVC, and placed into retail display for 0 or 3 d. On d 10, the remaining muscle of the SM was enhanced, and five, 2.54-cm thick steaks were cut and assigned to 0, 3, or 5 d (HiOx) and 0 or 9 d (LoOx) of display. Measurements taken on the deep (DSM) and superficial (SSM) portions were: pH, L*, a*, b*, hue angle, and saturation indices, initial color, display color, and discoloration. No Diet × Display Day (P > 0.05) interaction occurred for display color or discoloration scores of B steaks in PVC. On d 1, PVC 30 d H steaks were brighter (P < 0.05) than 40 d H steaks in PVC; no differences (P > 0.05) in H PVC display color due to diet occurred on d 0, 2, and 3. For steaks in HiOx, the DSM of 20 and 30 d B steaks on d 4 and the DSM of 20 d B steaks on d 5 was brighter (P < 0.05) red than 40 d Zilmax B DSM. HiOx 20 d H steaks were darker red (P < 0.05) on d 5 of display and more discolored (P < 0.05) on d 3 to 5 than HiOx H steaks from all other diet regimens. For LoOx, 30 d B steaks were brighter (P < 0.05) red than 0 or 40 d steaks on d 0 and 9 of display. The DSM and SSM of LoOx H steaks from cattle fed Zilmax tended (P > 0.05) to be brighter red than control H steaks through 9 d of display. In conclusion, both HiOx and LoOx minimized color differences due to SM muscle areas. Feeding B cattle Zilmax for 20 or 30 d yields steaks equal to or better in color traits than cattle fed 0 or 40 d when packaged in PVC, HiOx, or LoOx. H steaks in LoOx had slight benefits in color stability when cattle were fed Zilmax for any duration, whereas H steaks in PVC had color advantages with only the 20 and 30 d durations. Packaging 20 d H steaks in HiOx resulted in less desirable color characteristics than all other feeding treatments.
