Audio And Video Tempo Analysis For Dance Detection

The amount of multimedia in existence has become so extensive that the organization of this data cannot be performed manually. Systems designed to maintain such quantity need superior methods of understanding the information contained in the data. Aspects of Computer Vision deal with such problems for the understanding of image and video content. Additionally large ontologies such as LSCOM are collections of feasible high-level concepts that are of interest to identify within multimedia content. While ontologies often include the activity of dance it has had virtually no coverage in Computer Vision literature in terms of actual detection. We will demonstrate the fact that training based approaches are challenged by dance because the activity is defined by an unlimited set of movements and therefore unreasonable amounts of training data would be required to recognize even a small portion of the immense possibilities for dance. In this thesis we present a non-training, tempo based approach to dance detection which yields very good results when compared to another method with state-of-the-art performance for other common activities; the testing dataset contains videos acquired mostly through YouTube. The algorithm is based on one dimensional analysis in which we perform visual beat detection through the computation of optical flow. Next we obtain a set of tempo hypotheses and the final stage of our method tracks visual beats through a video sequence in order to determine the most likely tempo for the object motion. In this thesis we will not only demonstrate the utility for visual beats in visual tempo detection but we will demonstrate their existence in most of the common activities considered by state-of-the-art methods.

Holographic Recording and Applications of Multiplexed Volume Bragg Gratings in Photo-thermo-refractive Glass

Recent developments in holographic recording of volume Bragg gratings (VBGs) in photo-thermo-refractive (PTR) glass have demonstrated their utility as components in high power laser systems for spectral narrowing, transverse mode control, beam combining, and pulse stretching/compression. VBG structures are capable of diffracting incident light into a single diffraction order with high efficiency given the Bragg condition is met. The Bragg condition depends on both the wavelength and angle of the incident light making VBGs useful for filtering and manipulating both the wavelength and angular spectrum of a source. This dissertation expands upon previous research in PTR VBGs by investigating multiplexed VBGs and their applications in laser systems. Multiplexing involves the integration of several VBGs into the same volume of PTR glass. This process enables the fabrication of splitting and combining elements which have been used for high power beam combining with significantly reduced complexity as compared to other combining schemes. Several configurations of multiplexed beam combiners were demonstrated for both spectral and coherent combining systems with high power results yielding a combined power of 420 W with 96% efficiency. Multiplexing was also used to produce unique phase structures within VBGs. This effect was exploited to create extremely narrowband spectral filters called moire Bragg gratings. The technical challenges of producing moire gratings in bulk glass have revealed new insights into the use of PTR glass as a recording medium and produced devices capable of narrowband filtering of only 15 pm in the near infrared. Experiments were performed using such devices as intra-cavity laser elements for longitudinal mode selection. Investigations have also been made into increasing the level of multiplexing possible within PTR glass. These explorations included scaling the number of beam combining channels, fabrication of integrated multi-notch filters, and generated several other potentially interesting devices for future research. The summation of this work indicates a promising future for multiplexed VBGs in PTR glass.

THE EFFECTS OF SENTENCE-COMBINING ON THE LONGITUDINAL DEVELOPMENT OF SYNTACTIC COMPLEXITY IN L2 WRITING

Developing syntactic complexity in writing is an important goal for many adult language learners. However, little is known about the effect of different writing practice tasks on the development of syntactic complexity. Furthermore, it is unclear to what degree syntactic complexity is related to writing quality. The main purpose of this study was to compare the longitudinal effects of three types of writing tasks on the development of syntactic complexity and writing quality. In order to investigate these relationships, a mixed-methods design was used. A quantitative component that was a quasi-experimental, longitudinal investigation was combined with an embedded qualitative component which involved eliciting stimulated recalls from participants from two of the experimental groups in the study. For the quantitative component, the participants (N = 105) were first-year, non-English majors at a four-year, co-educational university in western Japan. The participants were randomly divided into two groups: a sentence-combining group and a translation group. These two experimental groups were compared to an intact timed-writing group, which served as a comparison group. Writing samples were collected at three points throughout the year and analyzed based on five measures of syntactic complexity: mean length of sentence, mean length of T-unit, mean length of clause, clauses per T-unit, and T-units per sentence. Repeated-measures ANOVAs were used to analyze the five measures to investigate statistical differences across time for each group. One-way ANOVAs were used to analyze the five measures to ascertain differences between groups at each time. Furthermore, all the writing samples were evaluated by human raters for writing quality using an analytic rubric. Ratings were analyzed and investigated for changes in quality across time and between groups, as well as to examine the overall relationship between syntactic complexity and quality. For the qualitative component, seven participants were selected from the experimental groups to participate in stimulated recalls. The data were analyzed and coded to investigate the cognitive processes underlying each task. The results of the quantitative study indicated that the participants in the translation and sentence-combining groups made small, but significant gains in syntactic complexity across time. The translation group made significant growth on clauses per T-unit while the sentence-combining group made significant growth across time on mean length of sentence, mean length of T-unit, and T-units per sentence. The timed-writing group was not able to sustain significant growth across time. In the between-groups analyses, there were significant differences between the sentence-combining group and the other groups on mean length of sentence and T-units per sentence, indicating that the participants in that group demonstrated more coordination, and to a lesser degree, more subordination in their writing. In terms of quality of writing, the results indicated an overall weak, statistically significant positive correlation between measures of syntactic complexity and human rating judgments. Among all of the syntactic measures, T-units per sentence correlated the strongest with rating scores. The results of the qualitative component indicated that the participants practicing sentence-combining tasks focused most of their attention toward syntactic aspects of language while the participants in the translation group focused their attention on lexical aspects of language while performing the tasks. The findings of this study show that the development of syntactic complexity is influenced by writing practice tasks and that tasks that direct learners’ attention toward features of the language are more likely to hasten the development of syntactic complexity. Among the tasks, sentence-combining showed the most potential in developing syntactic complexity, particularly for increasing the use of compound sentences. However, none of the writing practice tasks led to significant gains in writing quality, in part because syntactic complexity was shown to have a moderately weak relationship to overall writing quality. / Teaching & Learning

An Iterative Confidence Passing Approach for Parameter Estimation and Its Applications to MIMO Systems

This dissertation proposes an iterative confidence passing (ICP) approach for parameter estimation. The dissertation describes three different algorithms that follow from this ICP approach. These three variations of the ICP approach are applied to (a) macrodiversity and user cooperation diversity reception problems, (b) the co-operative multipoint MIMO reception problem (pertinent to the LTE Advanced system scenarios), and (c) the satellite beamforming problem. The first two of these three applications are some of the significant open DSP research problems that are currently being actively pursued in academia and industry. This dissertation demonstrates a significant performance improvement that the proposed ICP approach delivers compared to the existing known techniques. The proposed ICP approach jointly estimates (and, thereby, separates) two sets of unknown parameters from the receiver measurements. For applications (a) and (b) mentioned above, one set of unknowns is comprised of the discrete-valued information-bearing transmitted symbols in a multi-channel communication system, and the other set of unknown parameters is formed by the coefficients of a Rayleigh or Rician fading channel. Application (a) is for interference-free, cooperative or macro, transmit or receive, diversity scenarios. Application (b) is for MIMO systems with interference-rich reception. Finally, application (c) is for an interference-free spacecraft array calibration system model in which both the sets of unknowns are complex continuous valued variables whose magnitude follows the Rician distribution. The algorithm described here is the outcome of an investigation for solving a difficult channel estimation problem. The difficulty of the estimation problem arises because (i) the channel of interest is intermittently observed, and (ii) the partially observed information is not directly of the channel of interest; it has dependency on another unknown and uncorrelated set of complex-valued random variables. The proposed ICP algorithmic approach for solving the above estimation problems is based on an iterative application of the Weighted Least Squares (WLS) method. The main novelty of the proposed algorithm is a back and forth exchange of the confidence or the belief values in the WLS estimates of the unknown parameters during the algorithm iterations. The confidence values of the previously obtained estimates are used to derive the estimation weights at the next iteration, which generates an improved estimate with a greater confidence. This method of iterative confidence (or belief) passing causes a bootstrapping convergence to the parameter estimates. Besides the ICP approach, several alternatives are considered to solve the above problems (a, b and c). Results of the performance simulation of the alternative methods show that the ICP algorithm outperforms all the other candidate approaches. Performance benefit is significant when the measurements (and the initial seed estimates) have non-uniform quality, e.g., when many of the measurements are either non-usable (e.g., due to shadowing or blockage) or are missing (e.g., due to instrument failures). / Ph. Simulation and Mathematical Tools for Performance Analysis of Low-Complexity Receivers

In recent years, research on the design and performance evaluation of suboptimal receiver implementations has received considerable attention owing to complexity in the realization of the optimal receiver algorithms over wireless channels. This thesis addresses the effects of using reduced complexity receivers for the Satellite Digital Audio Radio (SDAR), Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and UltraWideband (UWB) communications technologies. A graphical-user-interface simulation tool has been developed to predict the link reliability performance of the SDAR services in the continental United States. Feasibility study of receiving both satellite and terrestrial repeater signals using a selection diversity (single antenna) receiver has also been performed. The thesis also develops a general mathematical framework for studying the efficacy of a sub-optimal generalized selection combining (GSC) diversity receiver over generalized fading channel models. The GSC receiver adaptively combines a subset of M diversity paths with the highest instantaneous signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) out of the total L available diversity paths. Improving the Performance of Wireless Systems via Selective Interference Nulling and Adaptive Medium Access Control Design

Escalating demands for high performance wireless systems requires the confluence of smart communication methods, network protocols and ongoing advances in fabrication technologies, in order to bring smaller form factor mobile handsets to market. On par with these trends, this thesis focuses on two main areas, namely, Multiple Antenna Systems and Adaptive MAC Design to improve wireless system performance. The first part of this research work presents a mathematical framework for characterizing the performance of cellular mobile radio systems equipped with smart antennas at the mobile handset to suppress a few dominant cochannel interferers (CCI) out of a total of L active independent but non-identically distributed Rayleigh faded CCI signals. Earlier works on this subject chose an unrealistic i.i.d assumption for the cochannel interferers. Since the CCI signals are of dissimilar signal strengths in practical operating environments, the premise of i.n.d fading statistics for the cochannel interferers is more realistic. In the subsequent section an analytical framework to investigate the benefits of a hybrid antenna array using selective interference nulling (SIN) and maximal ratio combining (MRC) in mobile radio environments is developed. In the second part of this thesis, we explore the performance gains that can be achieved by exploiting the synergy resulting from the combination of the MAC and the physical layer of a wireless network. As in a traditional design, the physical layer is responsible for providing error protection for the transmission packets while the MAC layer allocates transmission bandwidth to the contending users. However, in the proposed scheme the MAC layer makes slot assignment decisions based on the channel state information (CSI) from the physical layer. / Master of Science

Effects of 4x4 full diallel crossbreeding of chickens on growth production performance, genetics and phenotypic characteristics

Poultry provide affordable animal protein products compared to other animal products in agricultural industry. The demand of organic food by world health organisation and call for discard of conventional laying cage production method led to this research study. The aim of the study was to determine how (4 x 4) full diallel crossbreeding of the Potchefstroom Koekoek (PK), Naked neck (NN), Lohmann Brown (LB) and White Leghorn (WL) had an effect on production performance, egg parameters, genetic and phenotypic characteristics of F1 crossbreed offspring. The study was conducted at the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), Livestock Production Improvement at the Irene Campus, which is situated about 25 km south of Pretoria. The (4 x 4) full diallel crossbreeding design used on four chicken breeds to produce four pure breeds, six crossbreeds and six reciprocal crosses. The total number of 352 chickens with16 treatments (2 cocks and 20 hens) used in phase 1 and 384 chickens 16 F1-treatments (3 cocks + 21 hens) used in phase 2. Data was analysed by full factorial analysis of variance (ANOVA), General Linear Model procedures and Scheffe post-hoc for multiple comparison of the means of different variable data. The outcome had shown that crossbreeding had an effect on the production performance, genetic and phenotypic characteristics. The performed F1 crossbreeds emerge from crossbreeding between the local dual-purpose PK and commercial LB chicken breeds. PKLB dominated on growth and production performance traits compared to other crossbreeds. All set null hypothesis differ significantly at (p < 0.05), the outcome of all five hypothesis of this study were rejected. The Passionate Combining Entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurs are portrayed as salient drivers of regional development and for a number of years nascent entrepreneurs have been studied in a large number of countries as part of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor project and the Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics. Scholars have devoted much effort to investigating factors that determine how individuals engage in entrepreneurial activities, with most of the discussion limited to business start-ups. However, since this type of project does not follow identical nascent entrepreneurs over time, limited knowledge exists about their development and whether they stay in this nascent phase for a long time. In practice, it is common for entrepreneurs to run a business and at the same time work in wage work, so-called combining entrepreneurs. In Sweden, almost half of all business owners combine wage work with a business. However, not all combining entrepreneurs will eventually decide to leave the wage work and invest fully in the business. Consequently, much research has focused on the first step of entering entrepreneurship full time, but less has focused on the second step, the transition from the combining phase to full-time self-employment. The aim of this thesis is therefore to contribute to the theory of entrepreneurship by gaining a deeper understanding of combining entrepreneurs and their motives and intentions.   In the context of combining entrepreneurs, the theory of identity, resources and choice overload has been used to examine how entrepreneurs’ age (when starting the business), entrepreneurial tenure (the length of engagement in the side-business), hours spent (weekly involvement in the side-business), involvement in entrepreneurial teams (leading the business with one or more partners) and involvement in networks (business networks) influence their passion for engaging in entrepreneurship while sustaining wage work. Different categories of combining entrepreneurs and their intentions have also been examined.   A survey was administered to 1457 entrepreneurs within the creative sector in two counties in Sweden (Gävleborgs County and Jämtlands County). Since there were no separate mailing lists to only combining entrepreneurs, the survey was sent to all entrepreneurs within the chosen industry and counties. The total response rate was 33.5 percent and of them 57.6 percent combined, yielding 262 combining entrepreneurs who answered the questionnaire. The survey was then followed up with eight focus group interviews and two single interviews to validate the answers from the questionnaire.   The results indicate three types of combining entrepreneurs: nascent – with the intention to leave the combining phase for a transition into full-time self-employment, lifestyle – with the intention to stay in the combining phase, and occasional – with the intention to leave the combining phase for full-time wage work and close down the business. Transitioning fully to self-employment increases with the individual’s age. Also, a positive interactive effect exists with involvement in entrepreneurial networks. The results also indicate that the ability to work with something one is passionate about is the top motive for combining wage work with a side-business. Passion is also more likely to be the main motive behind the combining form among individuals who are older at business start-up, but passion is less likely to be the main motive behind the combining form among individuals who spend more time on the business. Alors que la science attoseconde connaît un développement fulgurant, le besoin de nouvelles sources laser adaptées à la génération d'impulsions attosecondes uniques est apparu. Grâce à ses propriétés d'accordabilité en fréquence et d'amplification de spectres ultra-larges à même de supporter des durées d'impulsions ultracourtes, conjuguées à la possibilité de stabiliser passivement la phase sous l'enveloppe (CEP) du champ électrique associé à l'impulsion laser, l'amplification paramétrique (OPA) s'est imposée comme un des outils incontournables pour la réalisation de telles sources.De plus, un intérêt croissant se manifeste pour la montée en cadence des sources d'harmoniques d'ordre élevé (HHG), en tirant parti des avancées des laser à fibre. Récemment fut démontrée la génération d'impulsions ultracourtes à très haute cadence, stabilisées en phase, dans la partie visible du spectre. Décaler la bande d'amplification vers l'infrarouge présenterait des avantages certains du point de vue de la génération d'harmoniques. En effet, travailler avec une source laser infrarouge permet d'étendre le spectre d'harmoniques et donc de réduire la durée des impulsions attosecondes générées. Jusqu'à présent, l'amplification paramétrique large bande dans l'infrarouge à haute cadence était rendue impossible par la difficulté à générer un signal à ces longueurs d'onde directement à partir d'un laser à fibre.Les travaux exposés ici décrivent la réalisation de nouvelles sources paramétriques, spécifiquement conçues en fonction des exigences de la génération d'impulsions attosecondes uniques, aussi bien en régime de forte énergie qu'à des cadences élevées.Nous présentons tout d'abord le développement d'un OPA avec stabilisation passive de la CEP, capable d'amplifier un spectre d'une largeur de 700 nm centré à 1,75 µm et délivrant une énergie de 450 µJ à la cadence de 10 Hz. Puis, nous détaillons une architecture originale d'amplification paramétrique à haute cadence pompé par un laser à fibre, qui nous a permis de générer des impulsions stabilisées en phase d'une durée inférieure à trois cycles optiques à la longueur d'onde centrale de 2,2 µm, avec une énergie de 5 µJ à la cadence de 100 kHz.Enfin, nous explorons la possibilité d'accroître la puissance de sortie des OPA infrarouges large bande à des niveaux de plusieurs dizaines de watts, grâce à la technique de combinaison paramétrique de plusieurs faisceaux de pompe fibrés. / While attosecond science reaches new frontiers in physics, the need for innovative primary sources suited for the generation of single attosecond (as) pulses emerges. Featuring high tunability, ultra-broadband amplification bandwidth and the ability of passively stabilizing the random Carrier-Envelope Phase (CEP) of any pump laser, Optical Parametric Amplification (OPA) has proven to be one of the most effective tools to meet the stringent requirements of High-Order Harmonics (HHG) driving sources.Moreover, there is a growing interest for higher repetition rate HHG sources, pumped by Ytterbium-doped fiber lasers. High-repetition rate, CEP-stable, few cycle pulses have been successfully generated by OPAs operating in the visible part of the spectrum. Shifting the amplified bandwidth towards longer wavelengths would be clearly profitable. In fact, the shorter harmonic wavelength cut-off will allow significantly extending the harmonics spectrum and consequently shorten as pulse durations. Until know, generation of CEP-stable, few-cycle pulses in the infrared at ultra-high repetition rates was impossible due to the issue of generating a broadband infrared seed directly from a fiber laser. This thesis describes the implementation of new supercontinuum-seeded parametric sources, specifically designed for isolated attosecond pulses generation with high energy or high repetition rate.The development of a CEP-stable three-stages OPA source is reported, amplifying a 700 nm broad spectrum at a central wavelength of 1,75 µm with an energy of 450 µJ at a 10 Hz repetition rate. Then, a new architecture based on a two-stage cascaded OPA pumped by a home-made fiber laser is presented, which allowed us to generate CEP-stable 3-cycles pulses at the central wavelength of 2,2 µm, with an energy of 5 µJ at 100 kHz. Finally, we discuss the possibility of increasing the output power of parametric amplifiers to several tens of watts with broadband parametric combination of several fiber-pump beams.
