Public access: Reimagining data spaceJanuary 2016 (has links)
Advances in networking and communications technology have changed the way we operate within cities and how cities are linked to the larger national context. Communication technology is becoming increasingly Internet hosted and is increasingly demanding of physical space. As communication technology advances, the typologies within our cities made to host these technologies must also advance. Inequitable access to Internet is widening the gap between higher-income professionals and struggling lower-income people. The successful city of today is one that acts as a system for producing and inciting human success for both the individual and the community. A city's success is determined by the quality of its creative innovation. New Orleans is a city of creative people, but many lower income people lack the resources they need to get ahead in an increasingly connected and competitive creative market. / 0 / SPK / specialcollections@tulane.edu

wtf? : the role of netspeak on levels of distress in internet based therapies and subsequent impact on therapist understandingDaynes, Lu January 2012 (has links)
Internet-based therapies are growing in number and popularity and cover a diverse range of practices for both individuals and groups. In concordance with the hyperpersonal theory and online disinhibition effect, people more readily disclose personal information when conducted via the internet. Due to technological constraints and social interactions, a non-standard language developed and has widely been termed “netspeak” (Crystal, 2006). Emotional words are processed differently to non-emotional words. Further, people do not connect with abbreviations on the same emotional level as they do when the words are written in full. Three studies were conducted: the first focused on assessing if a short emotionally evocative mini-biography had an emotional impact on participants. This material was then used in a second study which was a mass-testing of 62 young people on whether netspeak can change the impact on mood. The study used 3 conditions whereby participants re-wrote the mini-biography into either full English, using Netspeak or in their own words. A new vignette was created from the Netspeak condition to use as material for a third study. This final study was conducted via email into how much a psychological therapist understood what had been written in the Netspeak vignette. No differences were seen from re-writing an emotional biography in netspeak to English. Although psychological therapists demonstrated some understanding of the netspeak vignette, there was evidence of misinterpretation, presumption and misunderstanding suggesting that there may be some barrier to communication in internet therapy. The clinical implications of this research suggest that psychological therapists need to reflect on their practice in order to be aware of the level of assumption that can be made during therapy.

Consequences of communicating climate science online : the effects on young people's reactions to climate sciencePassmore, Phillip Scott January 2017 (has links)
This thesis reveals the potential pitfalls of relying on the Internet to communicate serious environmental issues. This exploratory research examines the consequences of aspects of the information society focusing on the effects of the Internet upon three reactions to climate communication: public understanding, perception of risk and support for climate change mitigation. It examines the implications of the rise of the information society on young people’s (18-25 year olds) consumption of media and climate science information. The information society literature emerged before the Internet, but predicted the increasing access to information that has arisen in the past two decades and its significant impacts on society and communication. An analytical framework is developed focusing on the sharing of information and the consequences of both misleading information and competition for the user’s attention. To explore the impact of the Internet upon public perception of risks posed by and their understanding of climate change, this research uses a mixed methodological approach. The qualitative approach of focus groups has been selected to establish how young people use the Internet and whether they share and actively engage with climate change information online. A quantitative approach of the experimental method has critically examined the impact of junk information (climate sceptic material) and information overload (competition for users’ attention) on reactions to climate science. The original contribution to knowledge of this thesis was the key finding that the lack of engagement with climate science online poses a more serious issue than the risk of climate sceptic information being virally shared. Simply having the information accessible is not enough when there is so much competition for users’ attention and the ease with which they can filter out climate change information.

Previous issue date: 2008-04-02 / In a scenario formed by the globalization process emerged from the technological progress, the Internet access in private places (lan-houses) portrays a movement that apparently begins to create new paths in the search for economic and social inclusion of youths from poor neighbourhoods of large Brazilian cities. To identify in what way or until what point attending lan-houses leads to this process of inclusion is one of the challenges that communication researchers face. These places have become socializing agents that must be studied in particular because they lack characteristics of formally organized institutions such as school, family and Church; and therefore allow the appearance of new cultural practices brought by these contemporary mediatic supports which take over new social urban spaces. In this study we attempt to further understand the issue by elaborating a cultural and mediatic consumption map of this youth – which the results point out the existence of a large mass of functional Internet users, still unable to completely grasp new technologies or take advantage of day-to-day possibilities on the net in the constitution of citizenship.
