Background: Aphasia is a language disorder that usually occurs after a brain injury. It is common for the disease to occur in connection with stroke. In Sweden, approximately 8,000 - 10,000 people suffer from aphasia each year, thirty-five percent of them are middle-aged and active. Aim: The purpose of this literature review was to describe experiences of communication in daily life in patients with aphasia due to stroke. Method: The literature review was performed according to Friberg's model, based on qualitative scientific articles collected from the databases PubMed and Cinahl Complete during the period 2005–2020. Results: The results from twelvescientific articles were used to describe experiences of communication in the daily life of patients with aphasia. This was divided into three main themes: Disease suffering, life suffering and care suffering. The first theme was divided into four different subthemes, the second theme was divided into two subthemes and the third theme had no subthemes. The result was experiences of losing friends, roles in communities and in the family. Changed world of life, led to despair and anger. Many experienced sadness and loneliness. Close relatives and their partners played a significant role in making them feel well. Conclusion: The literature study has shown the importance of communication in the patient's everyday life and conveyed the greatest responsibility that both healthcare staff and society have for treating patients with aphasia, which contributes to a better quality of life.

The effect of the inclusion of a computer-based interviewing system on patient-clinician communication during the subsequent consultation

Hands, Katrina January 2011 (has links)
A computer interview has been found to be valuable in eliciting information. This thesis describes the use of a CIS in two different clinical settings (GP surgery and chiropractic clinic), with the aims of aiding recognition of patients with anxiety or depression and enhancing communication between patient and clinician. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was included in the computer interview. 60 patients used the CIS in both settings, 6 GPs and 3 chiropractors were involved in the study. A high level of acceptance of the CIS was found in patients and clinicians in both settings. 99% of patients rated the system as “easy” or “extremely easy to use”. In the GP surgery, 80% of patients felt that they were “possibly” (68.33%) or “definitely” (11.67%) more focussed for the consultation. In the chiropractic clinic, 41.7% of patients said they disclosed new information and 33.3% felt better prepared for the consultation. The CIS aided the recognition of some individuals with anxiety or depression, more so within the chiropractic clinic than in the GP surgery. The information in the interview transcript was considered more useful by the chiropractors than the GPs (85% v 21.67%); this could be partially attributable to the fact that the chiropractors added 15 reassessment questions to the question set, whilst the GPs only added 4, more general, questions. The CIS also helped to highlight communication issues and show trends within the patient populations. Although the CIS was found to be of benefit in both settings, the GPs felt that it was more appropriate for use with specific patient groups. In the chiropractic clinic, the CIS was an effective addition to the periodic patient reassessment process. It would be possible to deliver other, individualised screening interviews using the CIS, delivery of which could be enhanced using handheld devices.

Význam módy jako prostředku k vyjádření ženské individuality / Meaning of fashion as a way of expressing woman's individual self

Bílková Černá, Michaela January 2016 (has links)
English Abstract This Master Degree thesis takes up the topic of fashion and deals with the debate concerning fashion as a mean of expressing womens individual self. The main aim of this thesis is to analyse the meanings which women in todays society attach to fashion and their individual lived experience with this phenomenon. This text is based on theoretical assumptions of Gilles Lipovetsky as his conceptual understanding of fashion emphasises free agency of human beings and therefore stays against the opinions of traditional sociology of fashion. For a long time, the area of fashion had been neglected, however, in this text the subject is discussed as a socially relevant and historically developing phenomenon and as an unique institution, which is characteristic for a modern society. Theoretical outcome of this thesis is the suggestion that fashion might be understood as one of the means used by women to express their individual self. Woman is seen as an individual human being, who lives through her own unique experience, on the other hand, her behaviour, her own experience is limited by external factors and conditions.
