Arruda, Mario Alberto Pires de January 2018 (has links)
This work tries to understand how processes of territorial production and communication networks are triggered through aesthetic works in the internet environment in an ecological perspective (GUATTARI, 2013). We started with a discussion around the filter bubbles (PARISER, 2012) of social networking sites, mainly analyzing the Facebook platform and its infra-structural database structure. We organize our work from analyzes that unfold in ethnographic, documentary, theoretical and experimental stages. Ethnography refers to our use of Facebook; the documentary analysis refers to the act of taking the platform itself in its materiality as a document that stores relations that constituted it and provoke its effects; the theoretical analysis refers to the work of understanding the semiotic dimension of technology analyzed through theories about communication codes (ECO, 2014, FLUSSER, 2013), on communicative spaces through territoriality theories (DELEUZE, GUATTARI 2012a), about online interactions from performance theories (BUTLER, 2016) and about the concept of the medium through the concept of environment (MCLUHAN, 2007); the experimental stage refers to the retrieval of the mechanisms of the happening (GUARNACCIA, 2010), the constitution of heterotopias (FOUCAULT, 2013) and the aesthetic paradigm of Félix Guattari (2012) in relation to the aesthetic manifestations selected. Specifically, we analyzed the aesthetic movements deep dream, glitch and the Metá Metá band in relation to their algorithmic bubbles using the described paths as well as mechanisms of data mining, which we also problematize in the analyzes.

Salt. Fat. Acid. Heat. Media.

Chea, Nila January 2020 (has links)
According to Samin Nosrat’s (2017) best-selling cookbook, salt, fat, acid and heat are key to cooking good food. At the same time, the process of making food has never been more connected with media. Given how intertwined food and media are today, I also add media to the list of ingredients. Food has become a popular topic in traditional media, as well as on new digital platforms. Since there is already a large body of research on food media texts, this thesis concentrates on food media related practices in the everyday life and the convergence between traditional and digital food media. For this study, a mixed-method approach was chosen, which included a questionnaire and a subsequent in-depth interview for the participants. The qualitative analysis of the data builds on a theoretical framework which draws first and foremost on Couldry’s (2004) Practice Theory which is complemented by Foth & Hearn’s (2007) Communication Ecology Theory to organize the practices. The food media practices of the study participants illustrated how embedded media have become in everyday practices and explained the convergence between traditional and digital food media. At the same time, the results brought media power dynamics to light and demonstrated that even media, that seems innocent at first, has to be consumed with a critical eye.

Journalists on COVID-19 Journalism: Communication Ecology of Pandemic Reporting

Perreault, Mildred F., Perreault, Gregory P. 01 June 2021 (has links)
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, journalists have the challenging task of gathering and distributing accurate information. Journalists exist as a part of an ecology in which their work influences and is influenced by the environment that surrounds it. Using the framework of disaster communication ecology, this study explores the discursive construction of journalism during the COVID-19 crisis. To understand this process in the field of journalism, we unpacked discourses concerning the coronavirus pandemic collected from interviews with journalists during the pandemic and from the U.S. journalism trade press using the Discourses of Journalism Database. Through discourse analysis, we discovered that during COVID-19 journalists discursively placed themselves in a responsible but vulnerable position within the communication ecology—not solely as a result of the pandemic but also from environmental conditions that long preceded it. Journalists found their reporting difficult during the pandemic and sought to mitigate the forces challenging their work as they sought to reverse the flow of misinformation.
