Case studies of female bodies in computer mediated culture

O'Riordan, Kate January 2002 (has links)
This thesis uses the representation of the female body in digital media to examine cultural formations in cyberculture. Through a variety of case studies it analyses gendered bodies across different'new media' domains. The thesis is rooted in computer mediated communication and the history of analysis that has accompanied text-based formations. The theoretical claims of the thesis include: " Computer mediated communication has become part of a visual culture and requires tools of visual analysis in addition to those of textual analysis. " The terms new technologies, internet and cyberspace, are used to homogenise what are actually very different forms and genres. " These different forms and genres share: 1) A reality aesthetic. 2) The strategy of presence. " In relation to this aesthetic the female body is represented in stereotypical ways that preserve boundaries and closure. Individual users simultaneously represent it in ways that resist, subvert and change these institutional models. " Representations of the female body are used to market new technologies that arguably feminise the technology. " The binary categories of public/private, producer/receiver, artificial/natural and male/female are collapsed through computer mediated representations of the female body. This producer/receiver collapse locates the self in a network with the technology. " Representations of the female body in cyberspace reveal that'the female' is performed through a technological construction. The thesis is comprised of case studies on cyberfiction, computer games, home pages, web cameras, institutional imaging and simulations. It deploys Haraway's model of the cyborg and Butler's model of performativity to discuss identity and subjectivity in relation to representations of the female body. It draws on cybercultural theory, feminist understandings of the body and it brings the methodologies of media studies to computer mediated communication.

Casa da Cultura Digital : reflexões e ideias que circulam entre trabalho, cultura e ideologia / Casa da Cultura Digital : reflections and ideas between work, culture and ideology

Schmidt, Sarah Costa, 1989- 27 August 2018 (has links)
Essas confluências poderiam ser alcançadas se a própria vida fosse colocada e vivida em laboratório e experimentação / Abstract: Experts and web activists point to the year 2003 as a time when there was a change of scenery for culture thought in the digital way in Brazil. At that time, the singer Gilberto Gil assumed the post of Minister of Culture and brought with him digital activists. In this context, the term "digital culture" gained political strength. Much of the discussions on the subject circulated at the first Casa da Cultura Digital (CCD), created in Brazil in 2009, in São Paulo. The CCD, defined by some of its members as a "network", "an idea," a "laboratory experiences" and "incubator of political and cultural networks," cultural collective housed, activists, journalists and hackers around values , common ideals and utopias in the same workspace / living / debates. The idea of the houses spread and in the following years, were created Digital Culture houses in the cities of Porto Alegre (RS), Bethlehem (PA) and Campinas (SP), Old Town (ES) and Fortaleza (CE), while that each of them has its own characteristics and are not mirrors of the former. This research conducts an ethnography of the ideas of CCD of São Paulo, the embryonic home, in order to point confluences, relationships and affiliations that pierced the atmosphere of this network. In light of Barbrook and Cameron (1998) and Turner (2006), this dissertation tries to show also the influence of the ideals of the digital generation of Silicon Valley, and how these ideas are appropriate and new meanings when they arrive in Brazil, under the focus of the Casa da Cultura Digital. Members of the CCD still show how opinion leaders about the idea of one's digital culture in the country by the direct relationship with the Ministry of Culture. Still, utopia (Harvey, 2006) shows how the wire conductor of the actions inside the house. All these movements show the search for a generation, born in the 1980s, mostly sharing optimism for digital and is looking for work means that escape of industrial capitalism, creating a space in which neoliberal options, such as model company, intersect with longing and the search for achievements, projects and social transformations. These junctions can be achieved if their lives were placed and lived in the laboratory and experimentation / Mestrado / Divulgação Científica e Cultural / Mestra em Divulgação Científica e Cultural

From Cyberspace to the Home-Place: Interpreting Online Communication of Homebirth in Canada

2014 March 1900 (has links)
This thesis investigated online communication of women utilizing a homebirth forum in order to understand why Canadian women are choosing homebirth methods instead of the mainstream dominant trend of hospital births, and how a sense of community is created through an online forum. For this research fifty posts were selected from fifteen different threads within the homebirth forum group on BabyCenter. The homebirth forum group was followed for approximately one month, and a total of thirty-four women are represented in the posting sample analyzed. Using content analysis techniques, four recurring themes were extracted – Control, Home, Hospitals, and Community – with at least four sub-themes for each identified. It was found that women choose homebirth for a myriad of factors but predominantly because homebirth allows for the ability to have a better sense of control, choice, and comfort over their birthing desires. As well, a sense of community is created in an online capacity because of the commonality of interests between the forum users. The solidarity of the homebirth community is built upon advice, empathy and situational understanding.

A máquina no trono da divindade: o pós-humanismo representado na rede / The machine in the throne of divinity: the posthuman represented on the web

Inside the field of cyberculture, we can state that there are a series of subcultures with their singularities: ideas, lifestyles, views, rituals, etc. All of them contribute to the formation of a cybercultural imaginary. The concept of posthumanism is one of them. Broadcasted in many websites that deal with this theme, we realize that inside the universe of cyberculture exists an imaginary full of representations which resemble the archaic myth-religious discourses. We depart from the hypothesis that this imaginary, as we will try to demonstrate, is based on the idea of a religious or almost magical power of technology as an instrument for human transcendence and which sees the posthuman as a new human being, much better than the present one, capable of using technology to transcend its limitations. To be more accurate, we believe that this kind of discourse used by the transhumanist organizations (which spread the posthumanism ideas on the internet) is permeated by discursive tropes and metaphors that take back to the myth-religious discourses. For this task, two websites will be analyzed: The World Transhumanist Association and The Extropy Institute.

A cultura digital em pauta : análise do site youPIX /

Mateus, Felipe de Oliveira. January 2016 (has links)
The development of the internet and of the digital technologies of communication favored not only the consolidation of new cultural habits and values, but also the appearance of new places of diffusion and access of information. This research proposes a study of the anlysis of digital culture made by the site youPIX. Brought up in 2006, youPIX appeared based on a proposal of coverage and to give visibility in media to the contents and behaviors emerged by the cultural usage of the internet and its digital technologies. In 2015, the site has changed its editorial line, aiming to be an analyst of this cultural universe, understanding the occurrence of its phenomena and economic, social and cultural consequences. Based on this editorial change and on the new proposal of analyzing digital culture, we intend to do a study of how this analysis take place in the field of the studies in cyberculture, in a way that is possible to identify what are the concepts and values used by the site. For this purpose, it will be structured on authours that analyze the development of digital technologies, its phenomena and its expansion on quotidian, besides a methodological work based on Content Analysis that will help on the comprehension of the values used by the site on its published articles / Mestre

L’hybridation, de nouvelles formes cinématographiques amenées par les dernières technologies dans l’esthétique des films / Hybridisation, new cinematographic formns instigates by the latest technology in film aesthetics

Amiard, Jean-François 11 May 2010 (has links)
Hybridisation, which is overwhelmingly present in many fields, has particularly influenced the evolution of cinematographic art. Although the first generations of film-makers seemed to have invented everything in this new art form, the cinema has always borrowed from the most modern technologies and the latest forms of artistic expression, while at the same time the media were taking up a larger and larger place in our everyday lives. The study of the links between them, which multiplied over the decades, allows us to understand the mechanisms contributing to the gradual abolition of the dividing lines between the media and artistic disciplines. However, the present research is not limited to the examination of works resulting from the most recent technological developments, since it also refers back to the avant-garde pioneers of the 1920’s, who set the basis for hybridisation. It is therefore centered around two main axes : on the one hand, the historical axis since cinema history has been profoundly marked by the vicissitudes of our time, and on the other hand the pluridisciplinary axis, including diverse forms of artistic expression and various media. More specifically, amid the wealth of cinematographic productions, this study proposes to take stock of the state of hybrid cinema at the turn of the century, using a corpus composed of 12 films, made in France, the United States, Canada and Japan between 1983 and 2004 and which go hand in hand with Fritz Lang’s Metropolis [1927]. Finally, it can be seen that this study has been inspired by the numerous and pertinent works and reports which have preceded it.

Sujeito da/na cibercultura: o discurso do cinema na era do amor virtual / Subject in/of cyberculture: the discourse of cinema in the age of virtual love

Silva, Jonathan Raphael Bertassi da 10 November 2016 (has links)
This work proposes to investigate the imaginary about romantic relationships experienced by the subject in contemporary society, marked by the strong presence of cyberculture, such as ortrayed in art discourse evidenced in six movies. The selected feature films for inclusion in this research, representing heterogeneity of countries and film genres, are: Thomas est Amoureux (2000), by Pierre-Paul Renders; I\'m a Cyborg, But That\'s OK (Saibogujiman Kwenchana, 2006), by Chan-Wook Park; Lars and the Real Girl (2007), by Craig Gillespie; Catfish (2010), by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman; Medianeras (2011), by Gustavo Taretto and, finally, Her (2013), directed by Spike Jonze. To this goal, we mobilize the theoretical framework of Discourse Analysis (AD) of French line, especially the work of Michel Pêcheux and the authors who shares with him the concern in observing the discourse as an imbricated process in a network of multiple meanings, rather than limited to making sense as a ready and finished product to be extracted by readers. Setting the language as work, this discipline shifts the emphasis to the referential function of language, which occupies nuclear position in classical linguistics, which advocates this approach in the communication or information; thus the bias of AD understands the language as a social-historical-ideological act, without denying the conflict, contradiction, power relations that it brings with it. To analyze clippings of films from the cyberculture production conditions, we mobilize concepts of AD on language in nonverbal discursive process. Thus, when analyzing the cuts and segments of the aforementioned films wich installs directions from the cyberculture production conditions, qe mobilize concepts of AD on the nonverbal discursive process, as in publications by Neckel (2004, 2010), Souza (2001) and Orlandi (1993), among others. The cyberculture, we notice, can not be reduced to the Internet and must be understood in its influence in other fields, such as the body and the cinema itself, so we can effectively understand how cyberculture changed the imagery of love, what the artistic discourse can reveal as well. As a result, we take further work with authors of sociology and philosophy as Bauman (2001, 2004), Bell (2001, 2007) and Lemos (2010), among others, to understand how the subject discoursivizes in the age of virtual love from the concept of discursive event and production conditions, having the goal of the contemporary context marked by the liquid-modern society. As describes Bell, cyberculture has many stories above all, the political history and the symbolic story, especially in this by referring to the narratives of/on cyberculture in the art. The body, by the way, is one of the concepts in movement in the age of cyberculture, and our interest to investigate these actions both in AD scope and the support of other theorists. In this sense, the cyborg manifesto of Donna Haraway (2013) on the redefinition of the bodies and love from post-modernity also helps us interpret the discourse of the feature films. From these concerns, we seek to understand the ways of subjectivity that are part of/in cyberspace, from the conditions of production that (re)configure the set of discursive formations in memory and artistic discourse.

January 2018 (has links)
Social media websites like Facebook has been developed, changing the dynamic of social relationships and configuring a new way of interaction between social actors. On the other hand, media communication - content productions as well as their spreadability and consume - also has changed, with structural transformations that has affected the practices of journalism. This research intends to reflect about the influence of these changes in the content of the scientific journalism produced by a consolidated magazine of the field, Superinteressante. Since may 2015, this publication started a massive production of videos, posted on the Facebook page of the magazine. Also, intends to verify how the interactions between the public and this content occurs. The object of study is constituted by the periodic monthly videos 2 minutos para entender. Initially, the videos were analyzed by the content analysis protocol of scientific news proposed by Massarani and Ramalho (2012), specifically on the dimensions Theme, Narrative and Framing. After this, using manual collect, the interactions promoted by each one of the posts were quantified, and the comments considered "most relevant" by Facebook's algorithm were also studied, using Content Analysis Method from Bar...
