A Descriptive Study of Value Systems Within the National Guard

The purpose of this study was to determine the various values that may be contaminating the military's communication and to describe the predominant levels of psychological existence. The design of the study involved a National Guard battalion that was composed of 432 personnel. The sample drawn was 280. Data was collected through the use of a values test. Comparisons of the differing scores of demographic variables formed the bases of the conclusions drawn in the study. The results were highly significant at the .0001 level. The data indicate much support to the past research done in the field of Value System Analysis. Much research is yet needed to fully describe the value levels in all military organizations. This investigation is the beginning.

Parental Caregiving and Sibling Topic Avoidance: An Application of Communication Privacy Management Theory

<p>The current study empirically tested a model of sibling caregiving topic avoidance, including privacy rule criteria as predictors of topic avoidance and both relationship satisfaction and depression as outcomes of topic avoidance. Associations between topic avoidance and its predictors and outcomes were compared for primary and non-primary caregivers. Additionally, the study tested privacy expectations, including information ownership and caregiving talk preference, as moderators of the associations between topic avoidance and both relationship satisfaction and depression. The current study is grounded in communication privacy management theory, conceptualizing topic avoidance as a strategy for maintaining privacy (CPM; Petronio, 2002). Findings validate CPM propositions related to privacy rule development and privacy turbulence. Findings also further understanding of informal caregiving, sibling communication, and topic avoidance.</p> <p>Over 75% of all eldercare in the United States is provided by unpaid, non-professionals (Family Caregiver Alliance, n.d.). Providing unpaid care has been linked to diminished well-being, including negative physical and mental health effects (Cooper, Balamurali, & Livingston, 2007). However, some scholars argue that caregiving is only detrimental in particular circumstances with some caregivers experiencing more benefits than burdens (Roth, Fredman, & Haley, 2015). The current study proposes that sibling communication is a key factor in determining when caregiving is harmful. </p> <p>Specifically, the current study examines topic avoidance about parent well-being and sibling’s contributions to parental care, including predictors of topic avoidance and the association of topic avoidance with sibling relationship satisfaction and depression. The current study includes a pilot study of 207 participants to develop CPM measures of caregiving topic avoidance, benefit-risk analysis, and information ownership as well as a measure of caregiving involvement (including personal care, routine tasks, and emotional support). The resulting measures are utilizing in a main study of 415 participants, testing models of middle-aged siblings’ topic avoidance.</p> <p>Findings contribute to understanding of informal care, sibling communication, and CPM. Privacy rule criteria, including context, motivation, and risk-benefit analysis, were associated with topic avoidance. Surprisingly, gender and family culture were not strongly associated with topic avoidance. Topic avoidance resulted in relationship dissatisfaction and greater depression when topic avoidance did not align with privacy expectations, resulting in privacy turbulence. Differences emerged for primary caregivers compared with non-primary caregivers, including predictors of topic avoidance and direct effects of caregiving involvement on relationship satisfaction and depression. For primary caregivers, involvement in personal care was associated with greater depression, and involvement in emotional support was associated with less depression. Overall, findings further understanding of privacy management, caregiving, and sibling communication and provide interesting avenues for future research.</p>

Over the years, optimization techniques have been widely employed to design optimal resource allocation schemes to achieve performance improvement. Most work in this area assumes that the system parameters defining the optimization problem are precisely known. In practical systems, however, these parameters are often time varying and random. Ignoring the parameter uncertainties would easily lead to suboptimality or even infeasible solutions that violate system operation constraints. / This thesis presents a stochastic optimization framework for the dynamic resource allocation in wireless communications. In particular, practice-relevant problem formulations are proposed to capture the stochastic nature of the uncertain system parameters, and efficient algorithms are developed to obtain the optimal allocation decisions. The proposed framework has been successfully applied in three promising wireless systems: adaptive orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems, multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems, and location-aware networks. Each application contains practice-relevant challenges, where the conventional designs using deterministic optimization fail to provide satisfactory quality of service (QoS). The results demonstrate that the dynamic resource allocation using stochastic optimization achieves more robust QoS performance and remarkably enhances the system practicality. / In adaptive OFDMA systems, a slow adaptation scheme is proposed for optimal subcarrier allocation. The proposed scheme updates the resource allocation decisions on a much slower timescale than that of channel fluctuation, which drastically reduces the computational complexity and control signaling overhead. The problems are formulated into several stochastic programs based on different application scenarios. An efficient algorithm is developed for solving the chance constrained subcarrier allocation problem. / In MIMO antenna systems, an antenna-and-power allocation scheme is proposed to enable the use of multiple antennas to support multiple radios co-operating on the same mobile device. The proposed scheme maximizes the long-term system throughput while satisfying the short-term data rate requirement of each radio transmission with occasional outage. The results show that both system throughput and success probability of QoS satisfaction are improved, and the optimal antenna allocation contributes to a larger portion of throughput increase comparing with the optimal power allocation. / In location-aware networks, robust power allocation schemes are proposed to combat the uncertainties in network parameters including user positions and channel conditions. A novel robust optimization method is developed to obtain the optimal power allocation, which improves both localization accuracy and network energy efficiency. The results show that the robust schemes remarkably outperform both non-robust power allocation and uniform allocation. / The goal of this thesis is to bridge the gap between the current designs under the deterministic optimization framework and their practical relevance. Diante desse cenário, este trabalho parte do pressuposto de que em uma organização a comunicação deve protagonizar processos para a inclusão da diversidade, na medida em que produz a circulação de significados compartilhados, intervém na realidade e constrói um novo sentido de atuação, e que a ótica de gestores(as) organizacionais sobre a comunicação organizacional pode impactar efetivamente nas políticas e ações de diversidade nas empresas. Por essa perspectiva, constitui-se como objetivo da pesquisa analisar em que medida gestores e gestoras compreendem a comunicação organizacional como protagonista de processos inclusivos da diversidade e qual a importância do papel das pessoas que estão em cargos de gestão nesta articulação, discutindo a comunicação organizacional como um encontro que reconhece a alteridade e a diversidade, e entendendo o papel da gestão no processo comunicação para a coabitação organizacional, que presume participação, democracia, respeito, valores compartilhados, solidariedade e parcerias sustentáveis. Considering this, this research assumes that communication must be prioritized to achieve diversity and inclusion in a company, as it creates shared meanings, interfers in the reality, and creates a new way of acting. In addition, organizational managers‟ perspectives about the organizational communication can effectively influence the policies and procedures of many companies. Communication Loss Management and Analysis for Multiple Spacecraft Formation Flying Missions

This thesis presents a method for managing periods of communication loss between multiple spacecraft in formation flying (MSFF), and analyzes the effects of this method on the stability of the formation keeping control algorithm. The controller of interest in this work in an adaptive nonlinear controller, where synchronization is also incorporated to force the position tracking errors to converge to zero at the same rate. The communication loss compensation technique proposed in this thesis is to use the previously communicated data in lieu of the lost data, which is an effective and computationally-efficient technique that is advantageous for small satellites. The performance parameter of interest in this research is the maximum rate of communication loss that an MSFF system can withstand before going unstable, and this is analyzed theoretically and through simulations. Finally, experiments involving multiple robots in formation with communication loss are conducted, and the results are presented.
