Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites used in aeronautic and aerospace structures are often exposed to cyclic loading and environmental effects such as temperature and humidity, which can lead to degradation and failure of the component. The objective of this work was to study the effects of aging under exposure to temperature up to 160?C and humidity on the damage mechanisms of carbon/epoxy composites subjected to cyclic loading. Initially, a preliminary accelerated aging study was conducted with unidirectional AS4/8552 samples using an exposure cycle of 8 h of UVA-340 at 80 ?C followed by 4 h of condensation at 80 ?C, for a total exposure period of 2,160 h. The effects of aging were evidenced by weight loss, fiber exposure, chemical changes, increased crack density in interlaminar shear strength tests, and fiber buckling in fractured samples after compression tests, even though no significant changes mechanical properties were observed. Based on this preliminary work, a study was conducted on [02/902]s laminates of the same material, using an exposure cycle of 8 h at 160 ?C followed by 4 h of 80% relative humidity at 70 ?C, for a total exposure period of 2,880 h. Afterwards, stress-controlled tension-tension fatigue tests were conducted using a stress ratio R = 0.1 and frequency of 5 Hz. Composites were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and weight change, before and after hygrothermal exposure. Samples of plain epoxy 8552 were also exposed to the same aging conditions and characterized by optical microscopy (OM), FTIR spectroscopy and weight change. Based on the fatigue life diagrams, a shift function was proposed for the prediction of number of cycles to failure of aged composites based on data from unaged specimens. The study also showed that failure by fracture may not be the best parameter to evaluate the effect of hygrothermal aging on fatigue life of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites. Other parameters such as delamination and crack saturation are also essential to assess durability of these composites.

The effect of the compacting pressure and the sintering temperature of the powders prepared by milling and mechanical mixing in the density were also studied. WC, Cu and Nb powders in the ratio of 80, 20 and 2 percent by mass, respectively, were prepared by milling and also mechanical mixing. The powder mixture were mechanically alloyed in a attritor ball mil in a dry environment. The powders were milled at 900 rpm, with a mass to powder ratio of 1: 100 balls for 1.5 hours, and pressed at 200, 400 and 600 MPa in a uniaxial matrix with 8mm diameter. The green bodies were sintered at temperatures of 1030 ?C and 1150 ? C for 60 min in a resistive tubular oven under a nitrogen atmosphere. A microstructure of sintered bodies for analysis by scanning electron microscopy. To analyze a presence of impurities in the initial powder and the as-milled powders, chemical analyzes of XRF and EDS were performed. A XRD analysis was used to detect as structure of crystalline. Amortization of the Cu and WC phases occurred, with a decrease in the crystalline phase due to milling, and inhibition of grain growth, both at temperatures, in the samples with Nb. Higher compaction pressure and higher sintering temperature show better results for densification of the material.

The composite materials are a new highlight in the technological advancement, consequently leading to the development of new researches due to its growing demand in the most diverse areas. Among these researches, arise those that have the objective to facilitate the application of these materials, through a fast estimation of its mechanical properties, without the need for experimental procedures, with this being the main factor in the projects preparation. Thus the micromechanical models appeared, which gained importance due to its practicality, such as the Mix Rule and the Halpin-Tsai equations. Recently, new computational models are combining micromechanical models and perfecting them to obtain maximum accuracy, as for instance in the Artifical Neural Networks application. Therefore, this work aims to create an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) architecture capable of modeling the shear modulus and ultimate longitudinal stress of unidirectional composites. When the ANN?s are trained and tested, they will serve as computational tools, similar to functions, where an input is supplied to obtain a desired output. To achieve this goal, it was necessary a collection of data in literature, which were divided in a training group and a testing group, with the cross validation between them being performed. Seven different types of architectures were developed, three for the G12 and four for the Xt, each of these with two, three and four inputs. Among these models, three of them are considered mixed models, which combines values from the output of the ANN with values obtained from the micromechanical models, such as the Halpin-Tsai. After the ANN training, a comparative analysis was performed between the values from the ANN and the experimental values, with quantitative and qualitative analysis being performed with the Halpin-Tsai model as a base for comparison, presenting higher values for the correlation coefficient and smaller values for the root mean square error.

?Green adhesives? are of great scientific and technological interest as an alternative to conventional commercial products, which often release toxic substances and take long time to degrade. However, the poor mechanical properties and fast degradation of some biodegradable polymers limit their use in most practical applications. In the present work, novel biodegradable composites were prepared using biodegradable polymers and cellulose nanowhiskers (CNW) for their use as wood adhesives. The goal of the investigation was to study the effect of the addition of CNW on the mechanical properties and degradation of the polymers. The biodegradable polymers synthesized by polycondensation based on glycerol and acids were poly(glycerol adipate) - PGA, poly(glycerol maleate) - PGM, poly(glycerol citrate) - PGC, poly(glycerol phthalate) - PGPh, poly(glycerol succinate) - PGSu and poly(glycerol sebacate) - PGS. In addition, the copolymers synthesized were poly(glycerol succinate-co-maleate) - PGMSu, poly(glycerol succinate-co-adipate) ? PGASu and poly(glycerol adipate-co-maleate) ? PGMA. Cellulose nanowhiskers (CNW) were added to the polymers as an approach for improving the mechanical properties and controlling the degradation rate. Composites were produced with the addition of 0, 5, 10 and 20 wt.% of CNW. The neat polymers and composites were analyzed by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Adhesively bonded joints were produced in test specimens of slash pine (Pinus elliottii) and angelim (Vatairea heteroptera Ducke) and subjected to accelerated aging and tested under shear by tensile loading. Bonded joints produced with polyvinyl acetate - PVAc and cyanoacrylate based adhesives were also tested under the same conditions for comparison purposes. Thermal analyses indicated that most of the biodegradable glycerol-based polymers tested are stable up to about 260?C and the addition of CNW increased the thermal stability (Tonset) of some polymers by 26?C up to 48?C, while others were not affected. Analyses of the fracture surfaces after the shear tests by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) suggest less ductile fracture with the incorporation of CNW to the adhesive. The shear strengths of the green adhesives developed from glycerol with 10 and 20 wt.% CNW were greater than that of the commercial PVAc based adhesive. The best results of shear strengths were obtained for PGASu 20 wt.% CNW (2.57 ? 0.36 MPa) and PGM 20 wt.% CNW (2.33? 0.43 MPa), while the shear strength for polyvinyl acetate - PVAc was 1.58 ? 0.18 MPa. Aging improved the shear strength of some adhesives. The best result was obtained for PGMA 20 wt.% CNW, which reached (3.89 ? 0.74 MPa) after 250h of aging, thus greater than the shear strength of cyanoacrylate (3.12 ? 0.53 MPa). Ultimately, the results presented in this work suggest that the addition of cellulose nanowhiskers (CNW) is a viable approach to tailor mechanical properties and degradation of biodegradable polymers.

In this perspective we studied the feasibility of using steel wool for obtaining a polymeric matrix composite. Three formulations were tested, 10%, 15% and 20% of composite fibers. For the characterization of the composite were determined thermal properties (conductivity, heat capacity, diffusivity and resistivity), mechanical properties (traction and bending) and physiochemical properties (SEM, XRD, density, absorption and degradation). The composite in its three formulations had higher mechanical strength compared to almost all composites that have already been studied in the laboratory LMHES. This greater mechanical resilience was associated with the use of a metallic fiber. Regarding the thermal properties, the composite studied had a lower thermal insulation than other composites studied previously. The composite showed higher viability for humidity absorption and mechanical resilience. The worst result was in thermal applications where its thermal conductivity is above of most polymeric composites found in the literature, due to the use of a metallic fiber. Some tests were made, such as mechanical, thermal, among other tests, showing excellent results because of the specific properties of the composites proposed, namely flexural strength, and good resistance to absorption in aqueous environment. The properties of such composite can be used to make structures that do not require significant mechanical resilience in traction, for instance in solar and wind prototypes, such as ovens and solar powered cookers and wind generator blades.

Solid electrolyte is the part of the fuel cell has three essential functions: separate reagents, blocking electronic current and have high ionic conductivity of the elements that compose it. Composite electrolytes consisting of a ceria (CeO2) or ceria-gadolinia (Ce0,9Gd0,1O2, CGO) ceramic matrix and eutectic mixtures of Na2CO3/Li2CO3 or LiCl/KCl allow reducing the operating temperature of ceramic fuel cells from 600 - 800?C to 400 ? 600 ?C. In this paper, composite electrolytes based on ceria and molten salts (eutectic mixtures of carbonates and chlorides) were obtained by the citrate method. The adopted chemical route enabled the simultaneous synthesis of the two phases, with precise control of composition and microstructure, providing substantial chemical interaction between phases. The study evaluated the effects of composition (carbonate or chloride content in the ceria based matrix) and processing (sintering temperature) on microstructure and transport properties of the composites. The structural characterization by X-ray diffraction showed that the carbonates and chlorides exist as amorphous phases. Despite the low relative densities (between 52 and 75%), as a result of reduced sintering temperatures (ceria/carbonate at 690?C and ceria/chloride between 400 and 600?C), it was observed that the fusion of the amorphous phase acts as a seal that can prevent the flow of gases through the samples. The correlation between the composition and the electrical behavior, using the infrared spectroscopy techniques, scanning electron microscopy and impedance spectroscopy, has observed a homogeneous microstructural distribution between phases, indicating the formation of a ceramic skeleton based on ceria, surrounded by a mixture of amorphous salts, obtaining a conductivity of 0.079 S cm-1 and 0,058 cm-1 S for the ceria composite and carbonates at 600 ? C and 0.0016 S cm-1 and 0.0011 S cm-1 for composites ceria and chlorides at 450 ? C.

Dry rubbing journal bearing is a structural part that is present in the most of mechanical systems of industries from home appliances, agricultural, aerospace, aeronautic and automotive sectors. The present work was subdivided in three papers that focus different aspects of the development of composites. The first one had involved the modification of lignocellulosic particles, using the cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) as the source of cardanol. The objective was increasing in the degradability of polypropylene (PP) composites made of different types of lignocellulosic particles. Thermo-oxidation tests and analyzes of the mechanical behavior, chemical composition and physical properties of the samples allowed the verification that composites produced with CNSL-modified particles degraded in half the time of the conventional ones. The second article aimed at optimizing the methodology of chemical modification of lignocellulosic particles surface with CNSL that can also be used as an intermediary step in further functionalization of lignocellulosic particles, as it introduces upon its surface higher reactivity sites. The efficiency of the chemical modification methodologies was evaluated with the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetry (TGA) and contact angle. The behavior of composites made of the modified particles in polypropylene matrix was also evaluated by mechanical tests and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). The third paper dealt with the production of PP composites made of cashew wood flour and carnauba leaf flour. The physical, mechanical and morphological properties were evaluated by TGA, differential scanning calorimetry, mechanical tensile and flexural tests, and SEM. Composites made of bulk fibers, mercerized and coupled with maleic anhydride were compared and the best performances were observed in the composites using maleic anhydride as coupling agent and carnauba fibers.

The use of composite materials has grown mainly from those that present residues in their composition, since the environmental impacts generated by the bad destiny of these materials have worried society. This work presents the study and characterization of a composite material obtained from the mixture of polymer matrix of polyester resin and residues of chicken eggshell. The collected shells were dried and broken to obtain three granulometries (fine, medium and coarse). The matrices used were the orthophthalic and terephthalic polyester resins, being chosen the percentage of residue of 100% in mass in relation to the matrix, as a function of preliminary tests for the diagnosis of composite saturation. The test specimens were constructed and subjected to tests to characterize them through their thermal properties (thermal conductivity, thermal capacity, diffusivity and resistivity), mechanical (tensile strength, flexural and impact strength) and physical properties (density, moisture absorption and aging). As expected, the proposed composite presented lower mechanical resistance than the matrix, characterizing the residue as filling load. In this way, all the formulations of the composite were applicable in structures that do not require resistance to great efforts. The composite presented superior thermal conductivity to the matrix resins for all the formulations, with thermal conductivity superior to 0,21 W/m.K, being classified as thermal conductor. The apparent density of the composites did not show significant variation in relation to the resin. The higher quality of the composite studied was the reduction of the amount of resin to be used, since the residue dust load can reach 100% in relation to the matrix, reducing the cost of the material obtained for the manufacture of diverse structures.

The phenomenon of adsorption consists in a process of the transfer of one or more constituents of a fluid phase to a surface of a solid phase. The adsorption process depends on physical and chemical characteristics, as: structural properties of the adsorbent (porosity, functional groups), adsorbate (ionic radius and coordination number), interaction between adsorbent and adsorbed. New technologies have emerged with focus returned to the use of biological materials with adsorbing properties for the treatment of effluents, in particular, removal and recovery of heavy metals, showing good performance. The main advantages of using natural adsorbents (biosorbents) in the process of sorption are: low waste generation, easy recovery of metals, the possibility of reuse of the adsorbent and lower operating costs, depending on the adsorbent material used in the process. From the foregoing this research used tablets of composite material, formed of recycled low density polyethylene (LDPErec) as polymer matrix and adsorbent materials (coconut fibber FC, chitosan Qui or clay B) and a comparative study using such tablets as adsorbents, to removal of the chromium (III), in order to determine which tablet has a better adsorption of chromium (III).To this end, there were realized three experimental design, where they were evaluated the influence of the size of coconut fibber particles, the composition of LDPErec/Fc, LDPErec/B, LDPErec/Qui, LDPErec/FC/Qui and LDPErec/B/Qui, the concentration of chromium (III) adsorbate and the exposure time of the tablets in the chromium (III) solution. With the results can conclude that the models used in the experimental design were valid for the evaluation of significant variables of this work, as the best chromium (III) removal conditions. That happened to the composition values of 40/60% to the tablets of LDPErec/FC1, LDPErec/FC3 and LDPErec/B. The particle size range of coconut fibber that proved more favourable was smaller particle size (100-120 mesh) in the composition of 40/60 %.
